When i have a video running and i switch to another desktop or throw another window on top of it to do something real quick the player will turn gray and stop playing.
This is a problem for me because i like to have them playing in the background then link them from tmp to home so i can watch them later.
I opened my PC today, only to find out that the panels had gone gray for some reason.
How can I fix this? (make them black as they were?) also, Firefox has gone gray. Check the screenshot to see what I mean.
I've been using Ubuntu 10.04 for about a month and generally the graphics work fine (I have a Radeon 2600 XT graphics card and have installed Catalyst Control Centre 10.7).3D games such as Nexuiz work fine and I can generally play different types of video but when I try to play HD video it gets pretty jerky. The same files play fine in windows so I'm guessing it's a software/driver issue. I've read various related posts to this and after typing 'top' into the terminal, I can see that playing the video takes most of the CPU processing resource up, which I as I understand, suggests that most of the work is not being offloaded to the GPU.

When I try to play a video in vlc, totem or banshee, it immediately logs me out. Sometimes this happens when I try to full screen the video. This seems to happen only after upgrading to ubuntu 11, and happens for multiple kinds of files, like avi and m4v. The motherboard is Asus a8v-mx. How to fix my ubuntu installation

When playing a video file, the system suddenly "crashes" and loads the switch user screen, as if I had selected a different user in the switch user/shutdown panel at the top right of the screen. This seems to most commonly occur with .mp4 files, but also occurs with .avi. I have gotten this problem while playing videos in Totem Movie Player, VLC, and Banshee. My system has 4GB of Ram and Intel Dual Core T4200 processor (2.00 Ghz).
lspci returns the following:

I'm trying to setup an Ubuntu 10.10 desktop that will allow any number of vnc connections. When I try to connect (from Win7 using UltraVNC, which has worked for me using a comparable Red Hat RHEL 5.5 setup), I get a flickering gray X screen with no apps running, as if it were starting X over and over. I'm trying to make this display Ubuntu's login screen at that point.

Firefox 5.0 turns my screen gray, ties up the CPU in a loop, and turns the disc access LED on. Itś FF 5.0 running on 11.04.

There was a icon on the left hand bottom corner that I hit on the log in page that took me to a gray blueish screen where there is an "X" in the middle of screen that I can move with my mouse. no matter how many times I reboot I get this screen How do I get back to log-in page or do I start over and re- install?

the movie i downloaded plays for only 19 sec and stops saying you will be redirected to microsoft download page. the file is 700 Mb. i installed w32 codecs after searching through many threads but still my vlc doesnt play the file.

Also , another little annoyance is that ever since i tried Ubuntu for the first time headphones are problem (2 years ago ). In windows i can just plug in headphones and sounds stops on speakers and goes to headphones . It still does not work with Ubuntu. Right now i have sound plugged in a little stereo and i can use it's headphone output .
I managed to patch myself a line in cable and never had problems with earlier versions of ubuntu but with 9.10 I'm having a problem with my soundblaster card and my speakers. I'm trying to record with ardour but I can't hear the click track because my guitar is playing back through my speakers and it's louder than everything else. I never had this problem with earlier ubuntu releases. I've tried finding a way to disable playback through the speakers so I can just turn the volume up on the amp and record and listen back on what I've recorded. There's an option in ardour audio setup do choose what playback I want but no option makes a difference. Where have the mic and line in volumes gone in 9.10? Is there a way of fixing this?

Whenever I playback audio, and have not played audio for several seconds, I hear a clicking noise before the audio starts to play. I did not have this problem with Ubuntu 9.04 x64 on the same computer, and I think that PulseAudio is to blame, as usual. Does anyone have any advice as to how to stop this clicking noise? View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got this weird problem where my DVDs - just standard netflix DVDs mostly - will stop playing about halfway through. At first I thought it was a problem with the disks, but it has happened far too often now, and I tested one of the disk and it played fine in Windows - though I had to sit through 20 minutes of unskippable ads to check.
I get exactly the same problem regardless of player; I usually use VLC, but VLC, MPlayer, and at least one other all stop in exactly the same place. There's no buffering or freezing or anything, it just stops as if it were the end of the disk, and it always stops at the same time on a disk (not always at the same time on different disks). I can't skip past that point, it's like there is nothing past that point.

When i try to play HD (even with 720p) video the CPU load is almost 100%. I'm using vlc player and the movie is barely watchable. If i switch to Movie Player, the CPU load is slightly decreased, but after 2-3 minutes the audio goes out of sync, so no solution there. I have an nvidia 8600gt graphics card and the proper driver installed, every compiz effect works flawlessly without the slightest increase in CPU load and a dual core 2,1 GHz AMD processor. It shouldn't be a hardware issue.

The video DVD successfully burns, and plays in my computer, but does not play in any of the DVD players in the house. I used to user "ConvertXToDVD" when I was on Windows, but am trying to find a free/open source alternative on ubuntu. I am using all default options. I have looked in the settings for both programs, and I fail to see the problem here. Even the ISO created from devede seems to match up to the Video DVD (that works in the players) I had burned with ConvertXToDVD.
In Devede I have it so that the menu is disabled and it automatically plays the first title. Apparently this is not good enough.. I thought this program was supposed to be easy to use? What am I doing wrong here? I am using the same DVD-R I have used before on my Windows machine to great success. I am getting frustrated as I have went through 2 DVDs,
I have a Asus UX30 with an Intel GMA 4500MHD laptop with ubuntu, working with no problems except that when I'm watching some video it often freezes. This is true for .flv, .avi, .mov, and .mp4, at least. This is true in both vlc and movie player. Thumbnails generated from frames in the videos appear correctly in nautilus. Videos play fine in firefox, on ....., but I downloaded one as an .flv and then it had the same problem. I have restricted extras freshly installed. My "Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala" system is fully updated. I've found several other forum posts about the same kind of problem, but I couldn't find anything helpful in them (like that the contrast setting might be WAY out of whack, which it wasn't, or that nvidia drivers needed to be updated or reinstalled, which I don't have anyway, etc).

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy problem is that my computer plays MTS videos very bad (the videos get freeze, etc) in Ubuntu 11.04. I tested many players, but I didn't get good performance during the playback in any of them.
However, in the same computer, I use K-Lite Codec Pack in Windows XP and MTS videos are fine!
Is there any way to play MTS videos in Ubuntu very well?
Performance is excellent in both operating systems (XP and Ubuntu 11.04).
