Ubuntu :: Many Files' Icons Have Changed To The Gnome Style?
Apr 28, 2010
I have deleted the mime directory under /usr/share/icons/Humanity, and many files' icons have changed to the gnome style. Then I restored the mime directory back, and typed command sudo gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/Humanity. But my action doesn't work. The files' icons remains the gnome style.

I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

I recently got a new laptop, put in a couple partitions, installed windows in one and ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) in another (ext4, 50GB, boot), left another partition for swap (6GB) and finally another for storage (160GB, ntfs). I'm also using an nvidia GeForce 460M with nvidia-current installed (version 260.19.06). My problem is that all the icons (power "button", network manager, etc), general menus (e.g. in firefox) look "classic". That is to say not the "slick" appearance that I'm used to in the latest ubuntu.
I'm thinking it is something to do with either:
1) my X server config
2) gnome install
3) general incompatability with latest nvidia driver
I've looked through a bunch of different forum posts around nvidia and ubuntu (thinking this was the main source), but can't seem to find anything quite like this.To no avail, I've tried:
1) Fiddling with the X server settings through the nvidia app
2) reinstalling gnome-desktop, gnome-panel
3) reinstalling the nvidia driver
4) installing compiz (much prettier special effects, not a solution to the basic problem)
5) Messing around with appearance settings.
Attaching an image of what the desktop looks like now.

If you set your mouse for double click is it possible to change cursor style for hover icons?Currently the cursor looks like it is going to do single click:This does not make sense. It should show regular cursorAnd another misbehavior for double click occurs in Power Applet.Sleep and Hibernate icons require single click, but Settings icon requires double click:

I recently edited a .pptx presentation in LibreOffice, and it wouldn't close, until finally I had to force it to quit. The document recovered fine, and I saved it and all is good. I thought.
A couple of icons on the desktop acted weird, as in they wouldn't move, and I got a blank notification window when I tried to access them. So I rebooted.
Now, Launcher icons that had color are all in black and white, or most are, my desktop icons are b/w, and no longer have the icons that were associated with them originally. They seem to operate well, everything just changed.
I am running a Dual Core AMD Phenom II X2 565 64bit processor, 2G Ram, Natty, 2.6.38.10 generic kernel, Radeon 4290 graphics.
All of my windows (I know, bad word, but what else do you call them?) have changed to b/w themes as well.

So I'm having a weird issue with Gnome 3 in Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit (daily-live 4.25.2011). Anyways here's the issue, some windows File Menu bar is like the classic GTK style and doesn't look anything like the other windows, even though its an updated version. For example this happens on Gnome Terminal (3.0) and Empathy (3.0) and Nautilus (3.0) and a few others, but Firefox is fine, etc.

When I go to the appearance preferences in Ubuntu 10.04 w/GNOME and try to select a cursor different from the default, nothing happens, the cursor refuses to change. Logging out and in doesn't work. Over the weeks I've played around with this machine a bit, installing and uninstalling various DEs such as Kubuntu and LXDE; I have a feeling something messed up my cursor config while I was changing stuff, but I don't know what or where. Is there any quick way to troubleshoot why the cursor isn't changing?

I installed Ubuntu for the ability to easily change the system wide locale and language settings. However I've noticed a strange thing when logging in to my account with Japanese set as the language. Although I'm using the default "Ambiance" theme, the folder icons in Nautilus and some other styling seem to change to a different (much uglier) theme. For example on the top panel the network connection icon also reverts to an blue computer screen icon from the other theme, although other icons on the panel and the rest of the styling remains as the correct theme!
I'm now back in English locale, and my theme is normal again. In fact I don't even see the ugly other theme in the theme selector window. I haven't noticed this problem using other languages such as French and Russian. It's only a stylistic theme, but it's really ugly and really bugging me. what might be going wrong?EDIT***********************Ok I just logged back in again using the Japanese locale in order to post a screencap, and of course the problem has vanished now! I already logged in and out a number of times earlier to see if it would solve the problem and it didn't

Had to restart following an extract crash, and upon restarting, much of my theme, including all my icons had changed. Prior to this I was using the Awoken Icon Set. I've gone through and rerun the Awoken Customization script, but no luck. Simply trying to change my theme, and icons in the theme manager doesn't work either.

Since Unity and Gnome 3, the desktop interfaces are really changed. I really like the Gnome 2 (classic) interface. I can see every tray icon, every window that opened or minimized at panels, I have my menus, I don't need some mouse tricks to see something. Unity and Gnome 3 are fancy but I don't look for fancy.
Gnome 3 is the next generation. I don't like it. I don't like Unity either. And the problem is Gnome 2 will not be evolved much with its own standard interface because Gnome 3 is arrived. Gnome 2 is getting closer to its end of life. Bugs will not be handled with more attention, compatibilities will be less.So than, I don't like this situation of Gnome 2 either.

Using Windows 7's superbar, I can select/launch the 2nd application group by <Win>+<2>. We have DockbarX in GNOME, which is nice (grouping the windows like Windows 7), but it doesn't enable the <Win>+<2> style keybaord shortcuts. This is not restricted to making Linux like Windows. But I just find the <Win>+<2> style shortcut very useful. Are there similar ways in Linux to quickly switch between specific apps without pressing <Alt>+<Tab> many many times?

In KDE the main application menu had this really nice and useful search box that I would type the name of the application and press enter to open it. Now that I changed to ubuntu with gnome, there's no search box at the Applications menu by default. And I cannot find anyway to add it anywhere.
Is there any way to add a KDE style search box to the Gnome "Applications" menu?

Yesterday I've installed KDE (kubuntu-desktop) upon Ubuntu to give it a try after a very long time I didn't use KDE. I decided to remove it and go back to GNOME. I removed the KDE packages using this sudo:
[Code]....
The KDE has been removed but some how some of the font changed.
The font settings in the Appearance->Fonts are as they suppose to be (Sans,10...).

I run Gnome and i want KDE applications to use the same icon set as i have for my Gnome desktop. I have searched the file system and found a folder called "default.kde4" in /usr/share/icons. I assume this is where KDE applications pull their icons from. Firstly, this folder is a linked folder. How do i find out where the original folder that it is linked to is? Secondly, i am assuming, that the KDE icons won't be a name for name match for the icons i am using in Gnome (Faenza just in case anyone is curious). What is the easiest way to get the KDE icons changed for the one's i am using in Gnome?
