Fedora Networking :: Permissions Changed To Default On Restart?
Aug 12, 2010
I wrote a C++ program that uses serial port in fedora. Since normal user has no permission to read/write to /dev/ttySx, the program doesn't work. if I changed the permissions using chmod in su, it will works for that session. When restarts the permission changed to default again. So what to do a normal user program to access /dev/ttyS0?

I recently upgraded from Lucid to Maverick, and I noticed that a new error message caused by a "cp" command call, including the hard links option. Fortunately, I kept the last Lucid kernel (2.6.32-25), so I could check the different behavior with booting successively on each kernel. Here are my configuration files:
On the server (192.168.1.2):
/etc/fstab :
UUID=... /mnt/Backup ext4 defaults,errors=remount-ro,relatime,async 0 2
/etc/exports :
[code]....
If I check permissions of /net/Backup/Folder2 from the client, I get :
owner = nobody (Create and Delete files), users (Access files), others (Access files)
cp -alR /net/Backup/Folder1/* /net/Backup/Folder2
- under kernel 2.6.32-25: no problem
- under kernel 2.6.35-22: all the subdirectories are created, but all empty; moreover, I get as many messages as number of files from the source:
"cp: cannot create the link ...: operation not allowed"
I can copy manually any file to /net/Backup/Folder2 from the client. Why the behavior has changed from kernel 2.6.32-25 to kernel 2.6.35-22 ? Should I modify the permissions or the way the mount is exported with options like "(no_)root_squash", "all_squash", or "anonuid", "anongid" ?

I changed the default player for mp3 to audacious, which works fine, just that every time I doubleclick a mp3 file, a second application button appears in my taskbar saying "opening [file]" which looks like the default player. this program will eventually time out and go away, but it's still annoying - any idea on how I would go about fixing this?

Does anyone know why files in /boot are world-readable (particularly the initial ram disk)? I'm not an expert, but I would not expect anyone except root or a sudoer to have the ability to read these files.

I recently got a T-Mobile Tap and I've been trying to connect it via USB to my laptop running Lucid. When I open up the icon that shows up on my desktop after connecting it, I can't run the setup files inside. It says: The file '/media/HUAWEI/checksetup.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit. When I try to change the permissions from ready only, I get: Sorry, could not change the permissions of"checksetup.exe": Error setting permissions: Read-only file systemCan I tried calling T-Mobile but they said they don't troubleshoot with Linux. They said it's an "older operating system".

I have an NFS server on Windose Server 2003. I use it to back my Linux/Solaris databases up to. I mounted the NFS share on the Linux box. I was testing the permissions to it, and accidentally did a chown sybase:sybase /OLBackupOLBackup is the root directory of the NFS share. When I did the chown command, it changed the permissions on the share. Now it seems that linux is controlling the permissions. In windose I cant add users/groups. How can I remove Linux from owning the permissions. Im not sure if this is a windose issue or a linux issue, but figured I would start asking here first.

just be aware of this in 13.0 and previous, assigned user numbers begin at 500 by default. in 13.37, they begin at 1000. this is especially important if you have a separate drive or partition mounted as /home and you want to keep your /home data under the same user name while migrating to 13.37 (and like me are keeping a dual boot while making the transition).

I know - who uses parallel ports any more? People like me with an excellent, but old, HP OfficeJetPro 1150C. This is an old problem marked [SOLVED] in the following link to nowhere:
[URL]
I'm at Fedora 13 - 2.6.34.8-68.fc13.i686.PAE
Problem
1. /dev/parport0 is not found by sane unless you reset permissions after each boot
2. hplip udev rules only seem to support usb devices.
3. there are no/dev/parport[0-9] rules in udev/rules.d anymore
4. Did I read something about these ports being handled by HAL ACLs? If so, how do you do it?
default:
ls -laF /dev/parport0
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 99, 0 Jun 23 07:48 /dev/parport0
must do at each boot: sudo chmod 666 /dev/parport0

I've made a really critical and simple mistake and now I am trying to recover my computer. I accidentally logged into root and was trying to change permissions for the current directory with "." but instead used a "/" which started changing permissions of everything from / recursively. I quickly realized the mistake I made after it started and aborted the process by pressing ctrl+C. However I know many things are still not right because, even though I tried to reboot and change the permissions back to 0755 from the recovery mode root console. I still get errors when gnome tries to start..Here is the exact error I am getting. "There is a problem with the configuration server (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256". I'm pretty sure because of the way I aborted or because of the time the filesystem was running with 644 permissions, some amount of damage was done. Any way to recover it to normal? Or is there a way to recover it from the Ubuntu CD?

Had to restart following an extract crash, and upon restarting, much of my theme, including all my icons had changed. Prior to this I was using the Awoken Icon Set. I've gone through and rerun the Awoken Customization script, but no luck. Simply trying to change my theme, and icons in the theme manager doesn't work either.

I have a recently setup my first linux server (hardy) and am having problems with the permissions for a log file being changed. I believe this is caused by syslogd, but am not sure how to correct it. Bacula will report it is unable to start a backup because it is unable to open the log file (/var/lib/bacula/log) "permission denied". After changing the owner from syslog to bacula, the backup will resume. However, the following day I encounter the same problem because the owner of the log has been changed back to syslog.I see where the permissions for logs are altered in sysklogd, but I am not certain how to make bacula exempt or if this is the right approach.

I did a clean install from Ubuntu 09.04 to 10.04 and restored my files from tar.
Everything worked fine until I tried my weekly rsync backup.
The permissions seemed to be causing problems, so I recursively changed all the permissions in my home directory:
Code:
~/Documents$ sudo chmod -R 644 /home/wolf/
[sudo] password for wolf:
chmod: cannot access '/home/wolf/.gvfs': Permission denied
So now all the directories and files have read permission for everyone:
Code:
~/Documents$ ls -A
ls: cannot open directory .: Permission denied
~/Documents$ sudo ls -lA
[sudo] password for wolf:
total 80

I'm running Windows 7 and Ubuntu(latest version), dual boot, and I've locked myself out of Ubuntu. I have 2 hard disks and 2 cd/dvd drives. I was working on getting my 2nd hard drive to mount on boot up and succeeded. I should have left well enough alone, but I changed the 2 cd drive from swap to default, (just to see if it would mount automatically), and now I can't boot into ubuntu. It just hangs. I can't even in get using recovery mode because the updated graphics drivers won't allow me to read the screen during the boot into ubuntu until the boot has completed. If anyone has any ideas, please help. It had been working pretty well until this set back.

I'm new to linux and I've been trying things out with the new GNOME 3 (my first linux desktop/laptop OS). I was installing and changing some settings yesterday which did not show any significant changes to my desktop environment. However, today when I restarted my desktop the applications in the favorites panel have been set back to default. I replaced the evolution mail client with thunderbird already but every time I replace it and restart it reverts back to evolution. My network icon, bluetooth icon, volume control, and universal access buttons at the top right corner are invisible. When I hover over them I can manipulate them but otherwise its as if they are not there. My guess right now is that it might be that my software update was canceled halfway through because of the loss of internet connection. My battery icon was also changed.
FYI - its been fun, while sometime frustrating, to be able to tweak and configure so much stuff! Using linux made me understand more my laptop!

i'm new on board and new for linux.i installed fc 9, and it's look ok. i want to use stutic ip,so i did what i find here:uote:First, NetworkManager and static ip addresses do not get along. If you want to use static ip addresses, turn off the NM services by going to "system->administration->services" and disable the NM services and reboot.Next, goto "system->admin->network", highlight your device and click the "edit" tab and configure the device. Uncheck the "controlled by NM option" and "automatically obtain ip address" BUT then place a check in the "allow users to control" and "activate on boot"Then click the "dns" tab and fill in your dns servers ip addresses.the problem is that is no internet connection after reboot. than i go to system->admin->network,and activate the device and all ok.

I have a server box running F12. Whenever networking is lost up-stream, obviously, my box loses it and the networking icon gets the "red" cancellation sign over it.Now, when up-stream connectivity returns, Fedora does not auto-connect. Instead I have to manually go to my office (grrrr), and simply click on the networking icon, click on the unselected radio button next to eth0 (its the only network interface), and I'm good again. To save me future weekend trips to the office.... How can I make sure this happens automatically

I'm having an issue with dual networking on RHEL 5. My initial question is can the order the ethx (0,1) devices are brought up be changed at boot time, so I could bring up eth1 before eth0?
Some background: eth0 is DHCP'd and using DNS, basically this is my primary network. eth1 is an isolated subnet, with a manually configured IP which has no connection to eth0 or the outside world. When I bring up networking it first brings up eth0 and then eth1, what happens is eth1 becomes the 'primary' network of the host and I lose my connection to DNS/NFS/NIS and the outside world.
If I login and manually bring up eth1 first, then eth0 everyone is happy and connections work. So, I'm looking for a solution to either bring up eth1 before eth0 or somehow make eth0 my primary IP and not have it be clobbered by eth1.

I use headphones and have an MCP73 sound device; am running OpenSUSE 11.4.
On each restart, I get no sound. I have to go to YAST, Hardware, Sound, Other, Volume. The 'Other channels', Front slider is at 0%. If I slide it up to 100%, my headphones start working. At this point the Help text says to press 'Next' to save the settings, but there isn't a 'Next' button...just a Cancel and OK. OK keeps the new setting, but apparently doesn't save it permanently.
What can I do to avoid having to reset this slider every time ?
