Ubuntu :: Way To Make Compiz Default
Jun 21, 2011
I've looked around Google for a solution to this but I just can't find anything. It's probably a very simple solution that I'm just missing. I'm running Gnome 2 on Ubuntu 11.04 (I removed Unity completely). But when I login to the system it is using the Metacity windows environment. I can get compiz working by running 'compiz --replace'. I just added that command to the 'Startup Applications' but that way seems like a cheesy workaround. Is there a way to make compiz the *ACTUAL* default window manager without using the 'Startup Applications' route?

I finally waded through all the graphical issues that have been reported when upgrading 10.10 to 11.04. I've managed to get the nvidia drivers installed and working (even though Jockey still reports that nvidia-current is installed but has not been activated).Whenever I log into an Ubuntu Classic session, GNOME defaults to using metacity as the window manager. In order to get my compiz effects working, I have to open a terminal and do "compiz --replace". After that, everything appears to work normally including on screen notifications, the cube, etc.
I've though of including a "compiz --replace" script in Startup Applications as a possible workaround, but is there a better way to handle not having compiz started by default? Is there something in gconf-editor or similar that I can edit in order to make GNOME default to using compiz?

I'm thinking about switching from Ubuntu 11.04 classic to Xubuntu 11.04. My main priority is to have compiz running.
However, though I know how to get it running, I want to be able to use it without using the
Code:
Code every startup.
I know how to make it default in GNOME, however not in XFCE.

There is the Compiz feature that allows you to group and tab windows.
That is very nice, but is there a way to remember a window group?
Or maybe a custom terminal command where I can call those windows grouped?

I have official Compiz Fusion running on my Fedora 13 64-bit. I also installed some custom cursor themes and I'm seeing some strange behaviour. When mouse is on my Desktop the custom cursor theme is replaced by the default one. When I launch Firefox, for example, and move cursor inside Firefox window, then my custom cursor is being shown. Also, if I go to resize some window the custom "resize cursor" is being shown, or if system is processing something then custom hourglass cursor is shown again.
Basically while on Desktop or Gnome panels the custom cursor is being replaced by the default Fedora cursor.
This only happens when I choose Compiz as my window manager. With metacity my custom cursor theme is behaving properly. Is it possible to make Compiz Fusion not to mess with my cursor theme? Or maybe it is a Compiz bug?
Ok, this indeed is a bug, but I'm not sure if it's a Gnome or Compiz bug. Here is a fix (a bad one for now) which might save someone time. The credit for this does not belong to me, I got it form this link. So, here it goes:
1. Install gconf-editor by running "yum -y install gconf-editor"
2. Change your windows manager to metacity temporarily
3. Change your cursor theme to the desired custom one
4. Run gconf-editor and go to "desktop->gnome->peripherals->mouse" and remember the value of "cursor theme" option this gconf-editor branch.
5. Create directory with name "default" in "/home/yourUserName/.icons/" directory.
6. Inside newly created "default" directory create file with name "index.theme" with the following content:
Code:
[Icon Theme]
Name = <anything you want>
Comment = <anything you want>
Example = <anything you want>
Inherits = <THEME NAME YOU FOUND IN STEP 4>
7. After saving the file re-enable Compiz as your window manager and logout/login to your account. The problem with this fix is that you will have to modify "index.theme" file every time you will want to change your icon theme, but it works nevertheless.

I recently installed Linux Mint 8, which is an amazing distribution.I can get everything to work perfect, but I cannot figure out how to make the mouse wheel change desktops in compiz. Also, make sure that it only changes desktops when the mouse is over an empty desktop because I got it working once but the mouse wheel would change desktops all the time, even when I was trying to scroll through a webpage or document.

Did you play too much with compiz and after-a-while you realize that certain functions are not working anymore?
Well, just follow the steps below:
Quote:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz
Then,
Quote:
Restart your PC / lappy

I recently installed an image editor that I am fond of via Wine. It works fine but now I want to make it the default program when I open an image. I know for most programs how to change this but when I installed this via Wine it is not listed as one of my options for other programs to open that type of file. How do I change the default program to open a file when it's not listed?

My laptop's ubuntu partition has been a bit sluggish to boot lately, and I'd like to swap to a verbose boot so I can see if there are any processes I can eliminate to improve speed. E.g. my slackware install was waiting for an 8 second timeout initially, but I was able to stop it.

I have a desktop pc with three hard drives:
160 gb with windows XP
500 gb used for data and archives
40 gb with Ubuntu 10.04 and Zorun 4
Grub currently defaults to boot Ubuntu I want to make changes to boot XP as default. What file(s) do I need to edit to make necessary changes? In the older distros I knew how to edit "menu.1st" to get this done. The newer distros must have a different structure because I can not find a menu.1st file.
