I am computer literate but novice in case of linux.I have installed ubuntu. Please tell me how I connect to internet using mobile.how to install cable driver for connecting with mobile. What are installation steps.which rpm is required.
I have been trying to install an old HP Laserjet 4100 printer using an USB to Parallel Cable (Cables Limited USB IEEE 1284 printer cable). The driver provided with the cable worked on windows XP and I was able to print. The cable is also sold as supporting Linux but it seems that is was tested for fedora core 4 and Moschip Support Team wrote me that ubuntu 9.04 was not supported. When trying to install the driver (makefile) I got a lot of errors (see annex) . I have a System 76 PC with ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-17-generic, intel(R) Core(TM). Whwn connected the printer is not recognized.
How to install the cable ? Or any trade / model of printer cable really able to work with ubuntu ?
Additional information: lsusboutput, linux dirver file list, errors whwn carrying out the make and dmesg output
Additional information: lsusb indicates Bus 002 Device 002: ID 9710:7705 MosChip Semiconductor Printer USB to Parallel
Using ubuntu 10.10 (pinguy OS) i connected an ethernet cable from my girl's macbook pro to her lenovo ideapad s10-3t to transfer some DS9 episodes onto it. new enough to linux to have not been able to figure out how to access the files on the mac, so i disconnected the ethernet, and the wireless hasn't worked since. tried everything i know, and googling for a while (as well as searching again on this forum) to no avail.
Just before linking the 2 computers via ethernet, the wireless worked fine on the ideapad, always had; but not so after the ethernet connection that did nothing other than apparently kill the wireless. an "lshw -C network" command tells me i have a BCM4313 wireless card, and *-network UNCLAIMED. also, if i launch "install additional drivers", i see that the proprietary driver is not active.
How could merely plugging in an ethernet cable that happened to be conncected to a MBP running OSX.6 do that? and will that happen again? i thought linux was supposed to play real nice with other OS's, so why did a simple file transfer kill my wireless connectivity? i have no access to internet via ethernet cable, so i cannot just download the driver i need now. shouldn't it still be in the computer still? somewhere? is there a simple solution to this, or has the wireless driver been wiped out by plugging in the ethernet? is this a bug that should be reported?
I have 10 files of .dat formatsayA MCDR .datB MCDR .datand so one upto 10 dat filehow i convert these 10 dat files to txt files using single command or script
how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:
Three Ethernet Cables Two Printer Peripheral USB Cables The Two Computers A 2GB Flash Drive
That is all I can think of right now. I do not want to use CDs. In a way, I would like to do a network boot. So, how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4. The eMac has 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 700MHz processor. Two iMacs have 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 600MHz Processor. The other iMac is the same as the rest but has a 500MHz processor.
Can Cat5e RJ45 connector crimper be used for Cat 6 connector because I heard cat 6 connector is different from cat 5e connector and also same question for cable tester can cat5e cable tester be used for cat 6 cable?
I can't get a certain harddrive out of its mounting (screws too tight) , but I want it connected to a different computer. Is it possible to have the harddrive's powercable connected to one computer, and its SATA cable connected to another computer's motherboard? (The powercable is too short to connect it to the other computer.)
I need to force 80 pin cable detect on my cdrom. According to the kernel-parameters.txt file you can do this by using libata.force=(port).(device) 80c Here is the actual explanation from the kernel file: libata.force=[LIBATA] Force configurations. The format is comma separated list of "[ID:]VAL" where ID is PORT[.DEVICE]. PORT and DEVICE are decimal numbers matching port, link or device. Basically, it matches the ATA ID string printed on console by libata. If the whole ID part is omitted, the last PORT and DEVICE values are used. If ID hasn't been specified yet, the configuration applies to all ports, links and devices.
My question is where do you find the proper port.device numbers? I'm guessing it's lspci but I'd rather be sure before I do something silly.. An actual working line for a cdrw as master on the first ide channel would be excellent. BTW my cdrw is detected as sr0 so the normal "ide" boot params won't work....
Since there is no "Additional Drivers" app in Fedora like there is in Ubuntu, how the heck can I install the Broadcom STA drivers from the Live CD without using an Ethernet cable? And how the heck can I ensure that they stay installed, even after installing Fedora? I suppose putting the RPM on a USB Flash Drive will work, but that's the only thing I can think of... And is there an RPM out there for this specific driver?
Can do nothing with the PC. New install of 10.04 and was prompted to install Nvidia driver. Did so. Rebooted, now have nothing except a thin line at top of screen. How can I remove this driver when I see nothing?

After a disk crash I reinstalled openSuSE 11.2 and as always downloaded the latest Nvidia driver for my geforce 8200 graphics.
Unlike all previous cases, this time the driver does not install. The contents of /var/log/nvidia-installer.log are below. The error refers to being unable to to locate version.h
For those who need or want to install the latest ATI proprietary driver (Catalyst 11.2) right after a fresh 11.4 install - and might not look for solutions in the development subforum. In order to compile the module, I installed the kernel sources and the pattern devel_basis. I normally use most packages in this pattern, so I install it by default from other scripts. While running atiupgrade on a fresh install, I was surprised by the number of packages getting installed with that pattern. Please report if it doesn't work. (like aticonfig initial failed to add a fglrx section for some reason).Take a look at the atiupgrade thread in the development forum: Upgrading ATI driver with atiupgrade.
So ... right now I'm having an issue after I installed ATI Catalyst 10.8 for my GPU HD 5770.Every time I try to boot, it sends me to init3 (I mean text screen). But when I check and try to switch to init5, it tells me that I'm on init5 already. And I'm still stuck on the text screen. However, safemode is still working (yeah I'm on it right now - -").
I installed ATI driver by using this instuction --- openSUSE Lizards ATI HD57xxx fglrx drivers under 11.3
I have a qzd netbook with opensuse 11.2 running but I cannot get the graphics working. I have tried "startx" and get the following:
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.4650 X.Org X Server 1.6.5 Release Date: 2009-10-11 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: openSUSE SUSE LINUX
I've had a graphical card and I've downloaded the driver (from the official website of NVIDIA) with extension .run. As I forget the command line to install it, I would like to ask about it.
Installed 11.4 yesterday. No problems. Installed Gnome 3 today and it goes into fallback mode. Assuming that the graphics driver might be the culprit, I attempted to install the latest nvidia driver.
Added repo ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.4/ in Yast2.
Did a refresh and it complains that it cannot access installation media at the above. Paste the above in Firefox and it gets there OK.
One-click method also fails.
Never had a problem with updating nvidia driver before. Not sure what to check. I did delete and add with no success.
So my problem is: With internet cable I have connected to modem which support IPTV, so I can watch it, and I can't browse. With my wireless connection I browsing, and I can't watching IPTV.
I need anwser to this if can I set cable connection to only VLC (with which I can watching IPTV), and wireless connection to other programs or only Firefox?
I just purchased an HP Pavilion p6710f desktop with an ralink wireless n card, and 11.04 won't recognize it in 'Additional Drivers'. I can't get it to an ethernet cable, and then check for more additional drivers (did this on an old laptop), so what can I do??
I am using Ubuntu 10.4 and i cant get ATI's driver(10.4) to install. i tryed to run it in termonal but it stops and says i need to run this install as a super-user.
I am new to Linux/Ubuntu. I recently installed Ubuntu in dual boot with XP. I have an existing printer Canon MFC 4150 which works with XP. How can I get this printer to work in Ubuntu. Ubuntu does detect the printer, but cannot find the driver. Agter some googling, I found a driver for linux on canon asi site, but I dont know how to install the driver?
When I enter iwconfig it shows eth0 and l0, and says 'no wireless extensions' for both of them. I think I need to install a linux driver for the card, but it's a .git file. (found here: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/staging-next-2.6.git ). So how do I get the virtual ubuntu thing to recognize my card?
I normally use a cable to connect to the Internet, but I also use the wireless network regularly. So I'd like Ubuntu to automatically use the wired connection except when there isn't any.
I also have the unlock keyring problem (because of auto login and wireless Internet), does anyone know a solution to that problem? (It's quite disturbing to get that window each time you start the pc even if you aren't going to use wireless Internet)
system: Ubuntu 10.04, auto login, Intel Core 2 Quad Mobile Q9000, ATI HD 4670, 4 GB RAM, Broadcom NetLink BCM5784M Gigabit Ethernet PCIe, Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100
my CRT 1080i Samsung TV has a DVI connection, and my Dell mini netbook has a VGA port, so I bought a DVI cable and a VGA-to-DVI adapter. I'm not getting anything on my TV when I plug it in to my netbook...do I have to configure anything?
