May 27, 2011My host has enabled FTPES [URL]. I would like to use lftp to securely upload my files to the host. However, lfpt hangs at "`ls' at 0 [Connecting...]" when trying to connect. See report here: [URL]
I've already search this forum and the web for days, but there does not seem to be any explicit tutorial for lftp + FTPES.
I've tested filezilla and I can connect without any problems via FTPES. I'd rather use a command line tool like lftp, however.
From what I've gathered, the problem may be with the passive mode, and the fact that the response from the server does not reach my machine.
My machine is running Kubuntu and is behind a d-link router. I don't seem to be running any firewall (is that a problem for a personal computer?). I checked: the router's built-in firewall is disabled. I am not sure about the port forwarding issues, though.
I'd like to use your replies to write a small tutorial: I have found many posts by people experiencing similar problems, but none with an actual answer.
Another question: how can I make sure that any successful connection is indeed made via a secure channel. I can use lftp without problems when I don't use SSH/secure channels. Obviously, I don't want that. What tell-tale signs can I look to to ascertain that I am really securely connected?
General :: Scripted LFTP With Watchdir
Jun 1, 2011Really new to linux but I'm learning quite a bit and fairly fast. This is my first question on these forums and I hope I can get pointed in the right direction.Currently I run ubuntu 10 and currently I connect to my box via putty, and manually get files from 1 central ftp and then I take the files there and manually connect to 5 different ftps and send them out. I'm looking to figure out a solution where I can just dump the files into a particular directory on my box like a rtorrent watchdir and a script will pickup the new file and ftp it to all the places I need it to go.
I want the script to run in the background and just know a new file hit the directory and take care of it. To save time currently I'm using lftp and i have bookmarks saved with pw for all the ftps.

Here, *.rpm files are given preference. The rest of the files are being downloaded by lftp in alphabetical order, not the custom order sent by my ftp server. Is there a way to make it download it in the order sent by my ftp server.I'm using proftpd and the files are sorted by size.

Mar 31, 2010When I installed Wicd, and ran it for the first time, I got an error something like: "Could not connect to Wicd's dbus session- check the Wicd log file for more info". However, later when I restarted my computer, Wicd started, but I can't connect to my network, it shows up as <hidden>, I can connect to linksys, so I know that wireless is working on that computer. I know that there's nothing wrong with my wireless router, because I can connect to my network in this computer.

I have a file that I am trying to LFTP from my Linux server to my Mainframe and the file is uploading but the data looks slightly corrupted..First off let me tell you the following text is French and it contains accent characters.Below is how the data looks when you view the data through vi or on the Mainframe:

Note how the accent e is turned into a uppercase accent A and a copyright symbol.When I view the PC file in hex through Notepad ++ the turns into and the result is one character turning into two characters is a hex C3 and is a hex A9.
When I LFTP the file to the mainframe the characters are transferred and I end up with a hex 66 and a hex E4.The end result I am after is that I want to transfer my linux file, who's data looks like this on the linux server: factureNumro and like this when viewed on a PC: factureNumro to my mainframe and I want it to look the same as when I transfer it to the PC. Like this: factureNum.

After installing I can see the Wine drop-down menu under the Applications, but every time I install something, updates etc. I can see this same error. How can this be fixed?

Mar 19, 2010I just built my PC and loaded ubuntu on it. When the ubuntu desktop comes up everything looks ok. but when I click on any of the drop down menus, or anything else for that matter, the computer freezes immediately. I,ve tried copying the iso boot file to a new cd and reloading ubuntu but the problem remains. I've also tried removing one of the two ram sticks but again, the problem remains.
PC specs:

Intel i3 cpu 3ghz
2 Corsair 2gb RAM sticks

Apr 18, 2010Since the time I have moved to Ubuntu..I am finding it difficult to do work on images.... since in Windows I was using Photoshop.. But I tried running photoshop using wine and stuff but either didn't work or caused a lot of problems. So I found a new solution GIMP that is very close to Photoshop but not exactly like that.Now I got another solution that is some modification to GIMP called GIMP shop.
I downloaded the Linux version and I got a file gimp-2.2.8.tar.bz2 I was always confused in how I can install these source... there is no help on their website. installing these source files.... since I need to do many images manipulation and editing for my work.

Jul 22, 2010IBM/Lenovo, ThinkPad X40 (circa 2005), 1.2G of RAM, 17.5G of HD (which reports some damaged sectors) - essentially a progenitor of netbooks in size I've been running 9.10 Karma Koala for about a year now since XP fell victim to a virus and I had lost my disc. I've very much enjoyed the stability of ubuntu, encountering only minor problems which have been easily fixed. I decided to allow my system to update to 10.04 via Update Manager, which it completed and attempted to reboot. My system would only display a black screen from then on out with no indication of loading 10.04. I downloaded and attempted USB reinstall with 10.04 and LTS, always ending with the same result. I'm curious if anyone has had similar problems due to unstable installers or should I assume my system is too old to move past 9.10 (which seems to run without difficulty). Not urgent for my purposes, but I'd like to stay with the supported kernel over time.

It's a menu full of applications.I've filled mine with different applications I've reinstalled. There are many repeats of application names, with the only difference being most of them don't work. This is due to changing the installation location, via WINEPREFIX. No biggie.I'm also using Ubuntu 10.10. It's very nice!
Problem: How in the world do I get rid of these unwanted list items? It's very hard to find the ones that are good.
Plan B: The easiest solution, so far, is to reinstall ubuntu and install these applications correctly the first time. Then I won't have all of those repeats.

Apr 22, 2010Just received Intramfs update, within the hour (4/22/10 11:47 central) , installs correctly on a new 10.04 install but now machine cannot bootIt is somehow resetting the video it appears as the boot screen comes up in different (larger) type. then blanks and all activity stops,, I have been having similar problems if I apply all updates after an initial install of 10.04 but if I hold the opne gl modules the system will work but a backup taken with Remastersys made after the open GL installs will not work while the one made prior to the open GL install will restore the system so I'm guessing some sort of erroneous HW reset sequence

Also had a bit of an issue getting the wireless card to work, eventually found the answer in the debian wiki and got the legacy installer for the b4X broadcomn chipset. Since then, everytime i install something, the system tells me the package was not installed correctly, but it does appear to install, except the stellarium.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot Correctly Without Monitor
Oct 20, 2010I have a few machines set up to run off in the corner without monitors attached. I installed 11.3 (32-bit) on a couple of them and they run fine during setup but then I move them to the corner with no monitor attached and they won't boot correctly.
By this I mean they still run some apps I setup to run automatically from daemon scripts, but I can't ping or access the machines at all. It's almost like they aren't booting all the way up. Hooking a monitor up fixes this but I don't have enough monitors to keep these hooked up like this.
I have a couple of other 11.3 systems that are setup almost the same way but I put graphics drivers on those and they work with or without monitors attached. I don't want to have to put graphics drivers on those systems.
OpenSUSE Install :: Verifying A DVD Is Correctly Created?

It took me 3 tries to get is ISO image that matched the md5 checksum on the download site. At 8 - 10 hours each it was a PITA. The first simply aborted 1/3 of the way through (HTTP direct link). The second used wget, got a full file but the checksums didi not match. The magic method was Bitorrent.
All this has left me with an uneasy feeling about the contents of the DVD created from the ISO. Is there a way to test the DVD contents?
OpenSUSE Install :: KDM (Login) Not Working Correctly
Jul 10, 2011I recently installed SuSE 11.4 (kernel 2.6.37.6-0) and it all works very nicely EXCEPT for the KDM login. I am using kde 4.6.0 and have the latest updates for 11.4 installed and at install time, I left the automatic Login box checked which works ok. However, when I go to the 'Personal Settings - configure desktop' and change the Login - convenience' to UNcheck the Auto login box, it does not change the Login action - I stlll login (without a login name and password screen appearing). I have looked at the file - /usr/share/kde/config and the kdmrc file does change to read 'autologin' true (or false) when I make the changes in the configure desktop GUI, but this has no effect on my actual ability to 'login' automatically all the time!

Installation hangs at the point where the printer is supposed to be detected (after the prompt to restart).At that point I break out with Ctrl-C.I then run hp-setup and select usb. That process complains about missing dbus file but prompts for the printing of a test page. The job begins but only a few lines are printed before the page is ejected, some more lines print, the page is ejected and so on.Have tried to uninstall with make uninstall but since there's no desktop I suppose the hp files are in the home folder?Please inform of proper uninstall for my case.I have also installed hplip via the webmin config. That install proceeds smoothly with no errors but print result is same.
Server :: LFTP Can't Connect To Proftpd Server (hangs)
Nov 28, 2010I'm using ProFTPd as my FTP server on a CentOS 5 box. Since updating to version 1.3.3c, I seem to have very specific problems. Connections work quite fine with about any FTP client out there, including the basic ftp command from the Linux prompt. However, when trying to connect to that server with LFTP, things go wrong. When connecting, all I get is [Connecting] then [Logging in...] and then nothing. I have to add that SSL is forced off in lftp.conf (I read it could be the problem). I sometimes get a counter for reconnection, but it never works.
The command I use in lftp is : open -u <user>,<pass> <server_ip>, the ls for lftp to establish the connection. I don't see anything at all in the server's log. I just see "FTP session opened" and "FTP session closed" in /var/log/messages" and nothing in /var/log/secure. I can give you a strace if needed. Please keep in mind that the server WORKS with anything but LFTP and NCFTP (which I also tried).
