View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently installed open SUSE 11.3 on my computer which I built myself and the problem I have is after rebooting the computer, I get a black screen. It will not boot the operating system. Here is my component specification:
Video Card: BFG GeForce 8800GTX 768MB 384-bit GDDR3 PCI Express
Motherboard: DFI LP DK 790FX-M2RS AM2+/AM2
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz
Memory: CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (4 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
HD: Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
Another question is, where can I purchase SUSE 11.3 and if I do purchase, will I get help on the phone installing it ? Pleas keep in mind that I have little experience with SUSE Linux.
I downloaded and installed OpenSUSE 11.2 but only screen I see is console, SUSE won't even open.I assume that is an error of graphics card (ATI Mobility Radeon HD3650) or Processor (Intel Centrino 2)The error says that there is niether internet connection nor a driver for graphics card.I was able to work the command "startx" while I was using Ubuntu 9.10 (Ubuntu was not able to install proper graphics card driver too)
View 9 Replies View RelatedI wanted to try openSuse alongside with Windows Vista and Ubuntu. During the installation Suse wanted to delete my Windows partition. Of course I denied and stopped this installation, but now when starting my computer, the boot menu gives Vista, Ubuntu and Suse as a choice, but if I choose Vista, the Suse installation process is starting instead of Windows, there is no way to get Windows started (fortunately Ubuntu is working so that I can write this message). How can I get Windows starting?

What can I do to let it start correctly, or is there a way to disable Akonadi? It's very annoying that every time I start Kmail, Akonadi attempts to start.

"Something" happened to my friend's computer, and now he somehow expects me to know how to fix it. Sigh. The symptoms: There are two partitions - a Windows XP partition and a larger partition for SuSE 10.3 it seems. He can boot into the Windows, but not into the SuSE anymore. However, he can boot using the Fail-safe method.
I know this is very vague. but I can't get to the computer at present to check things for myself. Do any of you know what a possible cause of these symptoms could be and how to fix the problem?
I want to intall openSuse 11.2 and I don't know how to do the partition correctly. My PC run with windows vista.
This is how I made the partition:
dev/sda1: windows
dev/sda2: linux /
dev/sda3: linux swap
After the installation openSuse don't boot!
I just finished up a Clean install of Suse 8.2 (from BOXED set I bought back in the Days-from Best BUY.) everything seems to have gone well. I set the DMA on my ide drives ok. Under Yast ,it did have K3B RECOGNIZE MY cd-r iomega ZIPCD1024INT-A , it says it is recognized as acdwriter ,but when I go to k3b disk copy function, the whole cd copying process stops ,saying my cd-rom is not cdrDAO compatible. WHAT is going on???? Is this CDwriter too old for this Suse 8.2???
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a few machines set up to run off in the corner without monitors attached. I installed 11.3 (32-bit) on a couple of them and they run fine during setup but then I move them to the corner with no monitor attached and they won't boot correctly.
By this I mean they still run some apps I setup to run automatically from daemon scripts, but I can't ping or access the machines at all. It's almost like they aren't booting all the way up. Hooking a monitor up fixes this but I don't have enough monitors to keep these hooked up like this.
I have a couple of other 11.3 systems that are setup almost the same way but I put graphics drivers on those and they work with or without monitors attached. I don't want to have to put graphics drivers on those systems.

It took me 3 tries to get is ISO image that matched the md5 checksum on the download site. At 8 - 10 hours each it was a PITA. The first simply aborted 1/3 of the way through (HTTP direct link). The second used wget, got a full file but the checksums didi not match. The magic method was Bitorrent.
All this has left me with an uneasy feeling about the contents of the DVD created from the ISO. Is there a way to test the DVD contents?
I recently installed SuSE 11.4 (kernel 2.6.37.6-0) and it all works very nicely EXCEPT for the KDM login. I am using kde 4.6.0 and have the latest updates for 11.4 installed and at install time, I left the automatic Login box checked which works ok. However, when I go to the 'Personal Settings - configure desktop' and change the Login - convenience' to UNcheck the Auto login box, it does not change the Login action - I stlll login (without a login name and password screen appearing). I have looked at the file - /usr/share/kde/config and the kdmrc file does change to read 'autologin' true (or false) when I make the changes in the configure desktop GUI, but this has no effect on my actual ability to 'login' automatically all the time!

I am running Suse Linux Enterprise 10 on a laptop and by some strange reason the computer froze from overheating and I was forced to shutdown improperly. Once I restarted it booted right to the command prompt when it usually instead boots to the default user. I managed to get gnome running using the "startx gnome" command. But when gnome loads, none of my normal extentions load like my wireless driver, the sound driver, etc. how to restore gnome to automatically load the default user on start up or fix any other damage I might have done? lol

The NetworkManager program under KDE4 works fine and can connect to my home wireless network. However, The previous of NM cannot cannot connect to any wireless network.
I find it kind of odd, since KNetworkManager is just a frontend to the real NM, with was not actually changed when I downgraded.
I installed 11.4 and it seems to be working fine. To run few windows application I need WINE. I installed WINE using YAST Software Manager. But when I install application in WINE it's not working correctly. The same application is working fine in MINT/WINE.

I was hoping for a self-installer, because I'm used to windows. It opened in KPackageKit, or something named similar. I extracted it to my documents, because frankly, I have no idea where to extract it to. Anywhere's I've looked says that most software comes as a package, which you can search for and install in YaST. I searched for "firefox", and nothing new came up. how to extract things to the right place/install them correctly with YaST?

i have an external harddrive which i encrypted scince opensuse 10.2 with luks. Now i installed opensuse 11.2 its impossible to me to mount this drive correctly.
the harddrive was recocnized in my former opensuse 11.0 correctly as luks encrypted and during installation yast installed the kernel module and encrypted the harddrive so that i regulay could mount it on boot by giving the password for that harddrive. Scince opensuse 11.2 however yast thinks this is an dmcrypted partitoon and tries to unlock the harddrive using dmcrypt which of course fails.
does somebody know how i can encrypt and mount the externeal drive automaticly?
i have made a backup of /etc before i made a new installation of opensuse 11.2. is the possible to use the old fstab entries for that after installing luks?
I just installed SUSE 11.2 from a downloaded DVD The installation went correctly but now I boot up the computer and when the login screen appears there will be no box highlighting a user or even a blank box to input user. The restart, suspend and shutdown buttons are not operational. However, if I power down the computer manually and restart the login screen comes up normally.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSome month ago I installed openSUSE 11.1. It worked not bad, but I wanted to get the newes release of Firefox. So I did an upgrade to 11.2. Yast2 refused to work with an error message: unknown option -s (or similar). The regular updates didn't work also. Then I decided to do a new installation. Now I'm having a new problem: Display settings (Anzeige-Einstellungen) reports: Monitor unknown (Monitor unbekannt).
Possible resolution settings are: 800 x 600; 640 x 480; 400 x 300; 320 x 240;
Possible refresh rates are: 60 Hz or 56 Hz @ 800 x 600
I need 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz. In the previous installation it worked well. How I can teach openSUSE to run 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz?
YAST2 Hardware information shows me in Monitor > Monitor > Resources > Resolution: High: 768; Vertical frequency: 76; Wide: 1024
The VGA controller is also correct shown in Display > 3d Blaster Savage 4
Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;
GNOME failed to load telling me:
Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.
So I
Code:
To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:
Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.
So I try
Code:
To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error
Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.
So I
Code:
And get the following
I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run
Code:
On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run
Code:
To mount the device.
I end up with:
Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)
So, I
Code:
And see 9 partitionitions
Code:
Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get
plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.
I try
Code:
On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try
Code:
And run into the error:
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)
Good thing is there is a
Code:
Since space is a problem, I
Code:
On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to
Code:
I still get the error
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override
Code:
For package update tells me
cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w
Code:
For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.

I am trying to Install Open Suse 11.3 (burned as an ISO DVD) along with existing Win 2008 R2 OS. When I try to boot from the DVD it just logs in to Win2008 though boot from CD/DVD is enabled in the boot sequence. So i tried to mount the ISO and run from Windows ! BUT I get an error before installation starts telling that Win2008 R2 is not supported in open suse installer! Is there anything I can do to overcome this and install/retain both OS? In fact I am even trying to c hange my win2008 from R2 to Enterprise to see if I can overcome the problem!

I tried running it again and it hasn't worked, so I must ask for advice. I am working from Fedora 10 on the same computer.

i have a backtrack install that i would like to keep while installing suse for an everyday OS; i start the install process but when it gets to partitioning the hard drive, it doesnt seem to recognize anything already being on there; it just gives me the setup for suse, ie:
sda1 ext3 = OS sda2 or sda5 = swap. do i have to configure a partition scheme? i installed ubuntu on a desktop alongside windows very easily due to grub graphical install/partition; is there not a similar function for suse?
I have installed Suse on my Windows Vista 64bit machine a couple of times, but the last time I did it - after a disk change - presented some unanticipated problems. Prior to install, Windows Disk Management (whose output I was unable to paste into this question) showed that my disks were laid out as follows:
[Code].....
Disk 0 is a Seagate ATA drive, while Disk 1 is a Western Digital Ext HDD Usb Device. Looking back, I think I should have carved out a partition after M before installing Suse, but I was uncertain whether to make it a logical one or a primary, and in the past the installation has taken the 25 or so gig it needed from the last defined partition on disk 0. This time, however, it went after disk 1, and reformatted the entire drive, deleting about 300 gig of user data, including my system backup. What really suprised me is that it took up the entire drive: 2 gig for the swapfile, then a 20 gig partition, and all the rest for the third partition.
This is not what I would have expected. I especially would not have expected the installation to re-format user data. In any case, I did not want Suse on disk 1, so I reformatted the drive and then used my Partition Manager to rebuild the boot Mbr. So now, I am able to boot into windows, do not have Suse on my machine, but have lost critical data. My disks are now back to the way they were when I started (see above), except that drive F is now all free space, except for my latest backup. My question is how do I ensure, when I reinstall Suse, that it will choose disk0 for the installation and will not overlay any of the data that I have on that drive.
Gnome is falling apart and I've had a lot of nagging problems that I couldn't overcome.I'm thinking of wiping the OpenSuse partitions and doing a clean install without wiping the windows partition.I initially setup using the 11.0/XP dual boot FAQ in the How To forum.I have my Home directory backed up on an external HD. Might try KDE next go-round or KDE & Gnome as separate users. I have 11.2 i586 installation DVD.
