View 2 RepliesI am demo'ing Kubuntu 9.04 workstation to a customer. He has a CentOS 5.3 server (my doing). On it is our CUPS Network file server. Everyone (65 of them) print to our network printer through it using LPR/LPD (and sometimes Samba).
Problem: when Kubuntu's Print Configuration Tool went looking for printers, it found every network printer's IP address, but missed my CUPS printer server. What did I do wrong on one or both ends (I have control over both).
I have 2 PCs, 1 ubuntu and another kubuntu. Both are lucid 10.04.I have a network printer. On ubuntu I cannot find my printer model listed, but ubuntu gives the option to search for drivers online. This method succeeds. On kubuntu there's no such option. I cannot install my printer driver.

Operating system:
Kubuntu 10.10
Kernel 2.6.35-22 Generic
My laptop is HP probook 4520s
[Code].....
I tried that webcam on another laptop same version of ubuntu and same kernel (mini HP laptop), webcam worked out of box in all softwares with all supported resolutions.
I've had Kubuntu 9.10 32-bit running on my laptop since it came out, but in the past month all its networked printers have disappeared from the configuration, and I can't set up any more. I've been through the forums again and again and cannot fix it. I've installed and reinstalled lots of packages related to CUPS but it doesn't seem to make a difference.I'm not sure what has happened, but I have lots of clues. Since I'm reaching the limit of my know-how here, I'll just list all the clues.
I'm pretty sure the problem is in my Kubuntu laptop, because in my SOHO setup I also have a Kubuntu 9.10 desktop (this time 64 bit) connected to a printer, and I have successfully printed through that from both a Windows XP laptop and a Xubuntu 9.10 box.On the Xubuntu 9.10 box, I just asked for the GUI print configurator and it automatically detected the network printer. No muss no fuss. But on the Kubuntu laptop, when I go into the print configurator, here's what happens:
- it shows two options, "new printer" and "server settings" (image a.png)
- entering "server settings" everything is greyed out and unchangeable (image b.png)
- entering "new printer" shows only one option for a connection, "other" (image c.png)
- after entering the address of a printer i know works (image d.png) the configurator has detected the printer (image e.png)
- but then attempting to move forward it crashes with no explanation.
Running the non-kubuntu version of the configurator GUI provides a bit more information before it fails. When I try to access the desktop with the printer attached it wants a username and password. (which wasn't necessary for the two client machines who successfully printed.) And at the end of the process there is an error: "there was an error during the CUPS operation: client-error-forbidden".
Two more clues:
- when I try to go with my browser to localhost:631 the browser can't establish a connection
- but I can see the cups page on the printer's host machine at 192.168.0.104:631 no problem.
When using KUbuntu, I can open up Nautilus and Network Places, and see my other Ubuntu computer. When I am on another network, can other people see me? What's the point of this feature?

Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm planning to use Debian as the OS for a firewall machine, which will sit between my internet connection and the rest of my computers. Now my network is all wired, no wireless whatsoever. I'm using the onboard the motherboards cat5 socket which seems to be using the VIA rhine driver and I'm also using a 3com 100MBps card.
I can list the machine spec if you want but it's nothing special, an old Athlon 64 rig with 1gb ram and an OEM motherboard, it all seems to work ok apart from the internet doesn't' seem to work. Lenny seems to detect both cards ok and I even used the net install CD and it managed to download everything using the 3com card.
The strange thing is when I'm in Lenny, I can't seem to connect. I can ping google, but when I try and view a webpage, the browser just sits there with a while screen... Could it be that using 2 network cards is confusing Debian? Right now I've only got the modem hooked up the the 3com card, and nothing connected to the onboard network card.
setup my static network connection Here are my details :
IP : 172.16.152.137
Subnet : 255.255.255.192
Gateway : 172.16.152.191
Primary DNS : 172.16.0.1
[code]....
but after this setup when i restart my network #service network restart while bringing up the eth0 the following message is displayed before [OK] - RTNETLINK answers : Invalid Argument now it seems either this setup is wrong or not sufficient to set up the connection, whenever i try to ping 172.16.0.1 it showing connect : Network is Unreachable
I would like to apply KDE on my Kubuntu because the current one blew up. But each time I to sudo get-apt it seems to be fetching from the cloud. Is there a way I can make it to read from my local Kubuntu CD? I have both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Kubuntu Live CDs.
I believe the local disk read should be faster to translate than to bite the bytes across thousands of miles over the wire right?
I've recently turned an older PC into a linux box for the purpose of creating an online server with ftp and ssh capability and file sharing. I've installed Kubuntu 9.10 and I'm trying to ssh to the computer from outside the network.I've install the openssh-client and openssh-server and I've created a static ip address, which works fine. I cannot ssh to the machine from outside the isp using either the direct ip address or hostname. The machine is connected to the internet via a Linksys Wireless G router, and I've edited the configuration settings to keep port 22 open for connect in the port server utility.
I've checked the ssh_config and sshd_config settings and port 22 is the default connection port, which is supposed to be open. I've run ifconfig and everything looks fine. I can connect to the computer using a machine connected to the same router, but other computers cannot access it. I want it to be visible to everyone.
I have a weird problem with my /etc/network/interfaces configuration. I have the most simple static setup possible: Code: # cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
[code]....
I guess this should come under the title "why can't they leave well enough alone?" Today I had occasion to configure a couple of machines with static IP addresses for some testing. My 8.04 machine - no problem. Invoke network-admin, unlock (with sudo credentials), set the desired IP, netmask and gateway. It is good to go. On the 10.04 box I did the following:
Right clicked on the network icon in the notification area (nm-connection-editor) - I see Auto eth0 (last used, never). So what have I been using for connectivity since I installed 10.04???
I then select Auto eth0 and press [Edit]. Under the IPv4 Settings tab I change "Method" Manual and enter my settings. However, I cannot Apply the changes - the [Apply] button is grayed out. So I try the same thing via the menu System; Preferences; Network Connections - same problem the [Apply] button is grayed out. So then I create a desktop icon to "gksu nm-connection-editor". Now I can Apply my changes and perform my testing. Then it is time to set things back to DHCP. Should be simple.
I invoke "gksu nm-connection-editor" from my icon. Change Auto eth0 back to Method: Automatic (DHCP). Apply and the network icon appears to restart. But I have no Internet connectivity.
I can reach my router. I can reach my DSL modem. The connection to the Internet is still working on other PCs. In frustration I reboot the 10.04 box. I still cannot access the Internet. And the Auto eth0 interface shows never used.
I change Method: to Automatic (DHCP) Addresses only and enter my DNS servers for Opendns.org. Reboot and I am now able to connect to the Internet. Remove the DNS addresses and no connection. I did NOT have these specified in the network connection setup before changing to/from a static IP address.
While doing all this it seems that a new network connection "Wired network1" was created although it shows never used. I delete it, no change. I delete Auto eth0 and reboot. Now another new network connection "Auto Ethernet" appears and I can connect to the Internet without having the specify the DNS addresses in the network connections configuration. Interestingly this connection shows Last Used - now! Also after removing Auto eth0 and trying to Apply changes I am prompted for my password when I click the [Apply] button (starting the applet from the notifier icon, not my gksu launcher).
I have my new router all set up, and everything is working fine, but I'm having problems adding a password to the network. The network from the wireless router is called "auto dlink" by default, and I've tried through the Gnome interface to add a WEP 40/128-bit key that I generated through a website. As soon as I apply the change to the network, the connection drops, so I click on the "auto dlink" network again to connect, and it successfully does, but it never asks me for the key that I configured it to ask for. After checking the network connections history, it shows me as having connected to two different "auto dlink" networks at different times - the one that I added the key to, which is no longer available, and a new one that I am currently connected to, that does not have a key. Every time I try to make a change to "auto dlink," be it a change to the security or to the network name, the change registers and applies, but the network ceases to be available and is instead replaced by a new, default configuration of "auto dlink."

View 3 Replies View RelatedIn Ubuntu 9.10 (fresh install, not an upgrade from 9.04) on an ASUS EeePC 900, I was using wireless networking at home, which worked well. I took the netbook to work a few times and did not using it at home all that period of time. I connected it as a wired network (DHCP) at work, and it "just worked" fine (no configuration was needed). Now I tried to use it at home and wireless no longer works for all users. In System > Preferences > Network connections I can access the wireless configuration and it is still there, still with all the correct settings as worked before. However, in the network manager I access from the upper panel via the antenna icon, it now only lists a Wired network. The wireless network isn't in the list at all. No upgrades were done. I do those from home and tried to do one this morning but since wireless did not work I could not accomplish it.
I could hook it to a wired network, so if fixing this needs to upgrade something, that's doable (but I'd think it should not be needed since wireless did work before). I was going to try things like delete all networks and start again, but since that might lose information about a possible bug, I'm holding off.
I've got problem with configuration of 6to4 tunnel. I do it like they do here using iproute2 HTML Code: [URL] And still I can't ping ipv6.google.com: I' ve got Destination unreachable: Address unreachable
