How to Change the boot list? I have 4 OS. "in order to install" (Windows XP. Windows Seven. Windows Server 2008. Ubuntu) But in the boot list I see only: (ubuntu. Windows Seven). I need all of these operating systems.

I tried looking this up. It seems that in Ubuntu, you need to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst. I tried that, and the file is not present in Debian "Squeeze". (Just trying it out on a different PC, In case you are confused by my other thread regarding Lenny) So what do I need to do to change the default OS to boot?

but I do not see an entry for it in the list of sessions. The same is true if I go to "System -> Administration -> Login Screen" - I don't see all sessions in the list for the default sessions.
what's going on here? Do I need to tell GDM to go through this list again? I've tried restarting GDM but no success. This is ubuntu 11.04 btw.
I did an adjustment or two, and then it has been just been hanging up using 100% CPU when it is loaded. When an application uses it to save a document, it does not hang.I created a Templates folder and assigned it with the user-dirs.I then changed the view of that particular directory from LIST to ICONS.And then it started to hang up.Somehow I was able to change the view back to LIST, but it still hangs up.

Just wondering if it's possible to change the size of icons when Nautilus is in List View. I tried playing around with gtk-icon-sizes in the gtkrc file of my theme, but there doesn't seem to be a setting for it there. I could just zoom in/out, but when I have the icons the size I want them to be, the text is too small (see attachment).

View 4 Replies View RelatedAlright so I'm currently in the process of trying to transfer a wubi install of ubuntu to an actual partition using LVPM. I need to use unetbootin with parted magic mounted (not sure if that's the right term) to my hard disk rather than a bootable flash drive. So I set everything up, downloaded parted magic ISO, ran unetbootin and selected the file everything installed smoothly. I then restart my computer and unetbootin is indeed in the boot list but when I select it, it remains at a black screen. I left it at the black screen for about ten minutes and nothing happened. I've tried a few times and nothing.

But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. Here's what i'm trying to do: i have a 300GB IDE hard drive that has a OpenSuse build. I am trying to replicate this HD so that i can have another box similar to the original one...my second drive is 500GB SATA.
So far, I just ran a 'dd' command to copy the 300GB to 500GB. Now, after having read on internet, i realized i need to change fstab & /boot/grub/menu.lst. specifically, we need to change for ex:/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Maxtor_7L300S0_L60LCJ0G-part1 to /dev/disk/by-id/sda1 i did use a Ubuntu LiveCD to access the fstab and changed the line as mentioned above. Now, how do i change the menu.lst?? right now, when i try booting up from this HD, i have issues. specifically, i get this error message: could not find /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
I spent a few minutes googling this, but I am not even sure what to search for. I suspect I'm looking at part of upstart, but it could also be sysvinit, plymouth or something else entirely. Every time I reboot, just between plymouth's splash screen and gdm loading, I am shown a list of services starting. The list shows the names of the services and [OK] if they started sucessfully or [fail] if they did not (only apport ever fails and only occasionally). I don't need or want to see this list. It also interrupts the transition from Grub to GDM (the background color should be the same shade of purple from grub all they way to the desktop, but this list is presented as ordinary terminal output: white text on black background)

I installed Lubuntu, and when I boot up, Lubuntu isn't in my dual-boot options. It may have to do with the fact that I had to manually mess with the partitions in the installer. I am using XP.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed The latest and greatest Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and everything is clicking along just fine except one annoying feature that I am unable to get my finger on.I have quite a list of choices at bootup. I updated a couple version of the kernel and there is this memtest thing...twice... Then my family also uses windows 7 so that is the default at the bottom of the list set to boot after 3 seconds to keep the nagging to a minimum.
I would like to know the cleanest and safest way to have the list only show the current kernel option and the windows 7 option if this is even advised. Would it be best to have a backup (Previous kernel) in the list? *just in case* Is it safe to seek out the old kernel by version number and uninstall? Will this remove the entries in the list? Is editing the list and leaving other options installed wise? Is there a gui grub2 configuration tool with these advanced options? I have StartUp-Manager, but there is no options to change the list.
Im looking for the best/safest option to get this done because I now see another kernel update image in the update manager and it is going to increase the size of my list once I find the time to update. Im a bit green and scared I will ruin a good thing here. Everything is working perfectly so far and I realize one click and it could all be over.

I loaded the dvd (one that came with Linux Format Magazine No. 139), changed BIOS to boot from dvd, and then:
I get the welcome screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, KUbuntu, XUbuntu or Boot from First Hard Disk. As I have an older laptop I was going to try XUbuntu. However, the arrow keys did not change the boot option. In fact nothing worked, Tab did not bring up a menu and Enter did not initiate boot.
I tried reloading the dvd, switching off the laptop (no way to shutdown) and restarting but always come up with the same problem.
My DVD drive works fine and the dvd appears not to be faulty since all the info is readable when it is loaded with windows running.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried to do my parents a favor by installing Ubuntu 9.10 alongside WinXP on their PC -- same configuration I have on my desktop at home. The install went fine, but since I made a poor buying decision on purchasing a MSI motherboard in the past, Ubuntu immediately crashes after boot (other MSI board users having the same issue, no help from MSI).
The computer tries to boot Ubuntu by default unless something else is selected from the boot menu. How do I change the boot preference from default (choice 0) to WinXP? I tried manually changing this (editing the grub.cfg file), but the file said not to edit, that it's generated by something else...How do I have WinXP load by default instead of the broken Ubuntu?
I upgraded from XP to Windows 7 (I need this for legacy business) and decided to install Ubuntu permanently rather than using from CD. During an Ubuntu session I was prompted to upgrade, which I did, but when I boot up now, there seems to be 2 versions of Ubuntu which I can choose from the boot up menu, plus the usual mem test, safe mode etc, plus the option to boot Windows 7.
