Ubuntu :: Unable To Change Natty Clock Settings In Unity Menu Bar?

Apr 27, 2011

I recently upgraded my clean install Ubuntu Studio 10.10 64bit to Natty 11.04 and whilst everything is working well (except for having no plymouth boot splash - but I'm looking into this) I have noticed that when I log in to the "Ubuntu" desktop (with the Unity launcher and Menu bar in the top panel) I can't seem to change how the time and date is displayed. It seems to be stuck showing 24 hour time only with no date no matter which setting I select in the 'Clock' tab of 'Time & Date Settings' menu.

The clock applet works perfectly when I log into the 'Ubuntu Classic' desktop and I am able to display the date and weather ok.

I have a laptop which I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 64bit to 11.04 as well and it doesn't have the same issue.

I thought it might have been a rouge Gconf setting so I dumped my entire gconf using

Code:
gconftool-2 --dump / > ~/Desktop/allgconf.entries

then restarted into recovery and removed my ~/.gconf folder entirely, rebooted again and logged back on. Apart from losing some settings like Evolution and Networking, which I reloaded, and my theme going back to the default theme, the problem still exists.

Ubuntu :: Docky Settings And Position Reset Every Time Login?

Jan 27, 2011

I love docky but i have a really annoying problem.

Every time I login to my account, all my previously settings on Docky are gone. I move Docky to right, add some docklets and change some setings like Panel mode, etc.

But when I shutdown my computer, next time I login I see Docky in it's default setting again!

note: In the current session when I `killall docky` and `docky` again, it works fine and reload my previous settings. The problem happens on Logout/Login.

I run Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell amd64 Laptop with 1.7x2 CPU and 2.3GB of RAM.

Ubuntu :: Change GDM Greeter Position In 11.04

Jul 27, 2011

I have a dual monitor setup using TwinView running an up-to-date Ubuntu 11.04 amd64. The GDM (login) greeter is displayed in the center of the screen, and thus, one half of the greeter is on the left monitor and the other half is on the right monitor. I've been trying to find away to move the greeter to only one monitor. I've searched Google and the forums for an answer.

Here's what I've tried:
1) gmdsetup => does not have an option to position the greeter
2) gconf-editor => does not have an option to position the greeter
3) ubuntu-tweak => does not have an option to position the greeter
4) Tried these settings in
/etc/gdm/custom.conf, /etc/gdm/gdm.conf,
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom, /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf:
Code:
[greeter]
SetPosition=true
PositionX=200
PositionY=300
5) Mucked around with
/usr/share/gconf/schemas/gdm-simple-greeter.schemas ,
/usr/share/gdm/gdm-greeter-login-window.ui,
/var/lib/dpkg/info/gdm.conffiles

Ubuntu :: Change File Permission Settings To Force All Documents To Inherit Parent Document Settings?

Aug 21, 2011

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:

1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings

Programming :: BASH Sort List By End Of Line To X Position In Each Line?

Aug 18, 2010

I'm trying to make another file annotation script a little speedier than it has been by the up-until-now proven method of checking the last four characters in a filename before the "dot" (eg .jpg, .psd) against a list of known IPTC categories and Exiv2 command files. It occurred to me that if one script generated a list of files in directory foo, and the same or another script sorted that list by that four-letter tag,then that list could be used(instead of a for/do/done loop on the real files in the folder) by the command-file-matching script to "vomit out" which annotator file would go with file nastynewfile.jpg, f'r'instance. The script I had been using for this task looks like this:

Code:

while read 'line';
do
sp=$(echo $line)
vc=$(echo $sp | cut -d"," -f1)
cv=$(echo $sp | cut -d"," -f2)

[code]....

Where I seem to be stuck is with how to sort the lines in templist, which may be any number of different lengths, from back to front. sort -k looked promising, except it seems only to work the other way round. I thought of invoking a

Code:

q=$(expr length $line); echo $q
n=$[q-8]; echo $n

kind of thing, but that presented the problems of how to sort by those, how to tell sort where to find them (grep?) and how to "stitch them back in" to the original list, which is what I want to sort in the first place.
