Ubuntu :: Grub Messed Up - Error: Can't Find GRUB Drive For /sdd1
Jan 31, 2010I've trawled the internet but can't seem to find the exact same issue, so I've made a new thread. So, I installed Ubuntu onto a 160gb drive. I have other drives in the system, but I disconnected them so that the system drive would be sda. Ubuntu installed perfectly with no issues whatsoever. I connected the other drives in the system, and again it booted up perfectly (although I can't remember whether the 160gb drive remained as sda or became sdd). Then I attached some extra drives temporarily to do some data shuffling.
This moved my system drive to become sdf. My computer booted fine multiple times like this, but when I was finished with the drives I rebooted and suddenly everything broke. For some reason my ubuntu installation showed up in the GRUB twice, and neither of them booted. So, I popped in the Live CD (which I'm using to type this post), and decided to update the grub. I chrooted into my system drive and ran update-grub, but it simply returned something like this:

Dec 16, 2010I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:

Feb 11, 2010my old 80gb pata HD showed a dual boot Ubuntu - XP on startup, although ubuntu never worked, onlly XP booted. Recently I tried to Restore a Macrium backup on one of its two partitions, & spoiled something. On boot up it says:-

I tried to reinstall Ubuntu 10.8 with no success, & also XP with "R" for repair again with no success.

Nov 27, 2010I wanted to install ubuntu via wubi, but i had to format my partitions (can't do it on wubi ) so i used a crappy program(i don't remember the name) to get rid of Backtrack4 , because i wanted windows kept for my mom.So, that was the sorry, i've ended up with a GRUB error 22, and a Backtrack4 CD stuck in my DVD-rom.So my question is: Can somewone tell me how to fix error 22? (i've seen some methods online, but i obviously can't put a Windows CD in my DVD rom because the Backtrack4 DVD is stuck in there.

I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. Oct 12, 2010I recently installed ubuntu on an external hdd. i tried turning on my laptop w/o the hdd connected and when it went to boot it gave me an error saying that it couldnt find grub. all i wanted to do was boot into windows 7. is there anyway to set it up so i can just boot off my main hdd for windows and use the bios and choose to boot off my external to boot grub and choose what i want to boot like say linux?

Feb 18, 2010I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and previously had a separate partition with another distro on it. I decided to delete the other distro's home and swap partitions and install XP in place of it. I've been following these instructions: [URL] and [URL] I have gotten to the point where I am booting to the XP CD and want to install it, but I get the message, "Setup did not find any hard disks installed on your computer" when I should be getting to the screen that asks me to select a partition to install XP on. This is what my HDD looks like in GParted:
I want to install XP in the unallocated partition, but I have a feeling I screwed up somewhere along the way and probably don't fully understand the whole thing. Even if I try to format the unallocated partition to NTFS I can't make it a primary partition (I assume because it's within sda2). The very last thing I want to do is delete my Ubuntu partition and start from scratch, but if that's my last option let me know.

Everything has been working fine for a a long time but yesterday I tried to delete an unused partition through the Disk Utility in ubuntu (System->Adminstration->Disk Utility) and everything was messed up. I used to get the "Grub error: Unknown filesystem". I managed to create an ubuntu bootable usb and followed some tutorials for fixing grub but all i managed to do is to get another error: "Grub error: No such disc". After some experimentation i got
"Grub stage 1.5" which gave me a grub> command prompt./dev/sda is the drive containing Windows and Ubuntu.

General :: Unable To Boot Windows / Grub Error Saying GRub Loading Stage2 Read Error
Jul 8, 2011I am new to Linux. I have installed RHEL 5.4 on my PC with preloaded Windows XP.
Windows was set as the first boot kernel. So if i do not choose which OS to be loaded it will load Windows by Default.
Today I got an error saying GRub Loading Stage2 read error.

Nov 1, 2010I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.
After "fdisk -l",
I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?
Ubuntu :: Cannot Find The Ntfs Partitions
Mar 19, 2010I am using jaunty. I have it installed in a 80 GB ext3 HDD. (This is sdb) I have another 500 GB. Its NTFS. (This is sda) It has 3 partitions. Download, Movies, Dump. They are probably sda1, sda2 and sda3 respectively. Few days ago when I was using intrepid, all three partitions were showing in the Places menu. But I was being able to mount Movies and Dump. Not the Download one. It was continuously saying 'unable to mount'. Now, after fresh installation of jaunty (not upgraded from intrepid) only Download partition is showing in the Places menu. There is no option for the other two partitions.

Jun 5, 2009I've got myself the curious situation where, when I boot the system, I can get grub to start, but it always drops to the prompt.
I can run:configfile /grub/menu.lst
and this brings up the menu with no problems, and from there I can boot the system to either linux or windows. What I don't understand is why it wont go to the menu in the first place?As far as I can tell, grub/Kubuntu got confused when installing, as each of the hd#,# settings in the menu.lst have needed tweaking to let the system boot. (e.g. windows is actually hd0, but the original install had it at hd2. Likewise linux is on hd1, but the menu.lst had it at hd0). I've happily tweaked these to make the system boot, but would appreciate any help in convincing grub to actually load the menu without me having to use the prompt.

Nov 11, 2010I am using my flashdrive to install. I allocated 200gb for window 7 ult and used partition magic to format the rest to ext3 and swap for DISK 1. But when I try to install Ubuntu, installation can't seem to find the ext3 or the swap. It only sees my other drive in RAID 1.

I installed ubuntu on the dual booter situation and it was ubuntu 9.10

Now, GRUB is currently on XBMC Live. I have terminal and root access if needed, and a "Live CD" ready to use. What I want to know is how I can move GRUB, preferably on its own partition but it can go back the the first partition.
Ubuntu :: Grub Not Detecting Partitions Correctly?
Jul 18, 2010I've been running ubuntu 9.10 until this week without any problems. I've just done an in-place update to 10.04 and now cannot boot my windows XP partition.
looking at grub.cfg it appears to be referring to sdb1 as the XP partition whereas the disk utility says the correct partition is sdb5.
sdb1 is a data partition formatted ntfs but not bootable.
When I choose XP from the grub menu all I get is a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top, which would suggest it is trying to boot the data partition.
I've tried update-grub and also startupmanager and it makes no difference. I would just try to edit grub.cfg but the next update would presumably wipe out my changes.

May 23, 2010When I try and boot my Debian computer I get the messages: Grub Loading stage1.5. Grub loading, please wait... Error 15 Is there any way of recovering from this - or is it simply a fresh install? I was attempting an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and despite a few hurdles it looked like it was all happening. Got the new kernel loading, and the new grub. It looked as though grub2 was working so I ran the grub-remove-legacy-support command (something like that) and now my computer won't boot grub or Linux.
I'm assuming the MBR on my harddrive is lost, however I don't know what state the partition is in. I'm guessing that maybe this has been lost as well. I tried a few tools from the Ultimate Boot CD but nothing here was able to re-install my grub or boot from any partition or even mount my file-system. I'm fearing the worst but would like it confirmed before I blow it all away with a new install.
Ubuntu :: Resizing Partitions With GParted And What Will Happen With Grub
May 7, 2010I want to resize and eventually remove some partitions on my drive but I need to know how this will affect grub and what to do if I need to fix it.I currently have 3 standard partitions and 1 extended partition on a 160Gb drive.
1st Partition -Windows XP about 60Gb with about 35Gb used. NTFS
2nd Partition -Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 amd64 about 40Gb, 22Gb used ext4
3rd Partition -Linux swap about 2.5Gb
Extented Partition -Ubuntu 9.10 about 49Gb with 23Gb used ext4
I'd like to shrink the Extended partition down and add the space to the 2nd partion where Lucid is. Eventually, I'll want to delete the whole extended partition and add all the space to the Lucid partition.
After using GParted to resize these partitions, what will happen when I boot? Will I need to tell grub where the swap and 9.10 are? I am not changing the start of the first two partitions so I would assume there will not be any problem with them (I'm not sure how moving the start of the swap might affect the Lucid installation though).

Apr 22, 2011I've resized partitions with some program - perhaps even gparted - but from Win7. partitions are indeed resized, but now I can't boot Win7, grub says:
"No such device found - No such partition found".
I tried to use some advices on similar problems I found here (like adding GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="part_msdos" to etc/default/grub and running grub-mkconfig after), but nothing helped. I guess I could restore win7 with installation dvd but I want to fix GRUB (and have both ubuntu 10.10 and win7)

Sep 11, 2010I've decided to give ubuntu another test drive now that I got a bigger and better desktop. I downloaded the latest version of ubuntu, loaded it into my usb stick and booted from it. I then clicked on the install icon on the desktop to start the installation. Everything was going ok, until I came to the partitioning part. I had already (on windows 7) created a separate partition for ubuntu which is 56GB. So I chose "manual partitioning" and selected the ubuntu partition as /home and began the installation.
Everything seemed to have went well, the window suddenly closed and then nothing happened. I waited for 15mins and still nothing happened. I decided to restart and see what happened, but I discovered that I couldn't boot into windows anymore. It said something about intel boot manager cannot find filesystem. So I decided to boot back from the usb and see if I can reinstall ubuntu, I came to the partitioning part and all the drives were gone, I couldn't see anything, it was blank.

I forget what they were, but I know they are correct.
I tried doing a rescue installation, and reinstalled it many times with different settings. I even tried a manual partition according to instructions from the internet and reinstalling the grub boot-loader onto different partitions. I have reinstalled it at least 5 times!
Fedora :: Grub Not Appearing Even Though Other Partitions Recognized
May 11, 2011I had tried many distros over the years but settled on Ubuntu for the last two or three, unfortunately the new version of Ubuntu (Natty) has prompted me to make the change again. To keep access to all my Ubuntu docs e.t.c. I installed Fedora 14 on a seperate partition and hey presto, there's the Ubuntu partition for me to read from, problem is that my laptop still just boots straight into Fedora, this is ok on my laptop but I wanted to make the switch on my desktop as well which has the wife's Windows partition on it, not being able to boot into that would cause eruptions! The problem is that Fedora hasn't installed a Grub menu.
On advice I typed this:-
[eric@Eric-Fedora ~]$ grub-install -v
and got:-
grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97)

Ubuntu Installation :: Partitions Dual Booting And Got Grub Boot Errors?
Mar 29, 2010i'm trying to install 98se to a 110gb partition so i can dual boot with ubuntu 10 for 98 and 100 for ubuntu after the resize. when i tried making multiple partitions manually for ubutnu putting it on separate partitions i got grub boot errors. the problem i am having every time i try to install 98 it forces me to scandisk it then i have to hit space bar to fix every error i thinks it finds wich is impossible to press it 2 million times. now if I format in a non 98 format and tell it to format in lba it keeps asking for a boot disc, i burned one off but, still kept asking for it. if i do it in non lba, it only saw 2 gigs in 98 and when i went to install ubuntu it was a giant hard drive no partitions. i did try making 3 fat 32s 1 for 98 and then swap and linux partition but, the i got grub errors 17 and 18.
the problem is that bios a cap of 130gb for each drive or in this case partition. it's 320gb WD blue Scorpio. the short i want to dual boot 98se and ubuntu 9.04 with 2 fat32 partitions for storage 110 +100 + 80 = 320 also some visuals.
