I recently installed ubuntu on an external hdd. i tried turning on my laptop w/o the hdd connected and when it went to boot it gave me an error saying that it couldnt find grub. all i wanted to do was boot into windows 7. is there anyway to set it up so i can just boot off my main hdd for windows and use the bios and choose to boot off my external to boot grub and choose what i want to boot like say linux?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:

I am new to Linux. I have installed RHEL 5.4 on my PC with preloaded Windows XP.
Windows was set as the first boot kernel. So if i do not choose which OS to be loaded it will load Windows by Default.
Today I got an error saying GRub Loading Stage2 read error.

View 2 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message
error file not found grub rescue I can't say if 11.04 was properly installed or not. Ask whatever you like and I'll give the best answer I can. I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.
I apologize for this being somewhat vague but it happened several months ago and I don't currently have access to the laptop. But here goes anyway:Perfectly working dual-boot system with XP and Ubuntu 8.04. I also think I had installed a different boot loader (or maybe just a GRUB editor?). This was several years ago. I upgraded Ubuntu to 10.04 and I remember it asking me if I wanted to overwrite probably menu.lst. I said no when I should have said yes and now XP still loads fine but neither version of Ubuntu will load at all. I wish I had access to the machine so I could say what the error message is, but I don't and I forget.So I expect that menu.lst is just pointing to the wrong place but I'm not sure how to fix it. Can I boot from a live CD and edit menu.lst? Just thought about that.No biggie but I cannot screw up the XP aspect since that's major drama.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was trying to create a partition on my hard drive on Linux using the GParted program. I noticed my hard drive had a key next to its name but could not find information regarding it online. I proceeded to unmount the drive and made 2 partitions. However, it game me an error saying it couldnt make the partitions. I turned my computer off thinking i would get back to trying tomorrow. Today i turn on my laptop and see the usual hp screen. But after that it goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore looking thing. It goes nowhere from there. It usually goes to a black screen after the hp logo, that says GRUB loading.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've trawled the internet but can't seem to find the exact same issue, so I've made a new thread. So, I installed Ubuntu onto a 160gb drive. I have other drives in the system, but I disconnected them so that the system drive would be sda. Ubuntu installed perfectly with no issues whatsoever. I connected the other drives in the system, and again it booted up perfectly (although I can't remember whether the 160gb drive remained as sda or became sdd). Then I attached some extra drives temporarily to do some data shuffling.
This moved my system drive to become sdf. My computer booted fine multiple times like this, but when I was finished with the drives I rebooted and suddenly everything broke. For some reason my ubuntu installation showed up in the GRUB twice, and neither of them booted. So, I popped in the Live CD (which I'm using to type this post), and decided to update the grub. I chrooted into my system drive and ran update-grub, but it simply returned something like this:

I've got myself the curious situation where, when I boot the system, I can get grub to start, but it always drops to the prompt.
I can run:configfile /grub/menu.lst
and this brings up the menu with no problems, and from there I can boot the system to either linux or windows. What I don't understand is why it wont go to the menu in the first place?As far as I can tell, grub/Kubuntu got confused when installing, as each of the hd#,# settings in the menu.lst have needed tweaking to let the system boot. (e.g. windows is actually hd0, but the original install had it at hd2. Likewise linux is on hd1, but the menu.lst had it at hd0). I've happily tweaked these to make the system boot, but would appreciate any help in convincing grub to actually load the menu without me having to use the prompt.
I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.

I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?

I am trying to boot up linux on a SATA drive. The SATA drive already had some other linux. I 'fdisk' the SATA drive and cleared all partitions. Now tried to CD boot with linux, it copied over to the SATA drive, however, when i tried to boot from harddrive, it gave me a GRUB Error 22. Why does this happen ? Shouldnt the linux have created its own partition ?

I have a network set up that has been working for around a year with no problems but has now developed a login problem. The system was set up with a main server with all users on it and another PC located elsewhere that people could log onto using there personal login and password that then gained access to the account on the main server. This remote PC has now got the problem. When you try to log onto an account it comes up with the message "your session has lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself this could mean there is a installation problem or that you are out of disk space."
Error message says that no profile for the user can be found and it couldnt create per-user gnome configuration directory. I can log on as root onto the remote PC as it is obviously a local account but all the account on the main server are not accessible. From the root account I can see that the connection to the server is OK and I can actually log into the accounts on the server using the failsafe session so the physical network is OK.
I never built or designed this set up and to be honest I normally work with windows so its all a bit strange to me. Both PC's run Centos 5. I have checked the messages log and there doesnt seem to be any indication of a problem. Just that it stopped connecting from the remote PC. The accounts are all active on the main server itself and have no problems being accessed.
I primarily need to remove several listings from my boot menu. After many updates and upgrades the list is HUGE.I know you can edit the grub menu.lst file, but I don't have one.

And, I did read the guide on removing entries from grub 2. The problem is, some of the kernels in the current grub menu are no longer in synaptic on this install. Currently I have WinXP, Ubuntu 8.10, and Ubuntu 9.10 installed. I want to leave 8.10 installed, but not have it available in the Grub menu. How can this be accomplished? Grub 2 seems quite obtuse compared to earlier versions where there was a simple menu file

View 13 Replies View RelatedI had a a problem booting last night when my laptop battery came loose and caused a crash during boot.It ceased loading a daemon and I turned it off with the power switch, then I received the boot error,then i checked the linuxdrives directory and it was corrupt,I then, out of ignorance, ran wubi from within windows XP and said unistall believing that it would reinstall and fix itself.Thus you can see my green behaviour.I have been searching the threads and have tried many things but have had no success, I will suffer a great loss if I lose that load of Ubuntu as I have allot of work stored there, and in my Thunderbird accounts.

Everything was fine but now i cant boot into ubuntu any more. I have a Dual boot and Grub let me boot into windows. for linux grub gave error 17 (if i remember correctly).o i popped in the LiveCD and tryed gparted to check for errors (nothing changed). I tried rewriting grub from the live cd and that made matters worse.

Triple-boot system can't find grub/defaults/grub file. Debian lenny on hda2, winsxp hda3, ubuntu10.10 hdb2. All 3 accessible(working). I had to reinstall all Oses, winsxp 2nd after installing Ubuntu this time Grub2 detected and has each os running. I've so far looked at the Debian grubmenu.lst which shows that winsxp is listed but not Ubuntu even though I can boot Ubuntu. I'm sure that grub2 is in control because at boot it shows grub 1.98 also the os selection looks like the 1 in grub2
I examined my partitions using gparted it shows that winsxp is labeled as boot lba. That was sda3.
1. There's grub legacy in debian, ? in winsxp, grub2 in Ubuntu. where did grub2 go? It's menu is not in debian.
2. How do I find it or should I just change the grub that is within Debian to Grub2 & make it the system default and it's at the beginning of the system.
At the time of Ubuntu installation I didn't have access to Debian, due to wins install. So wins partition had boot flag.
3. Is there a way to enable grub legacy and add Ubuntu entries to it?
4. Is it as easy as changing the boot flags to Grub in Debian partition at beginning of hda?
5. Why can't I see default grub file on this installation of Ubuntu?
On this 1 as well as the other I have root login and can't see it.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a machine with 8.04 LTS, and have dualboot between those i system.The problem is when a start a get a message:'Boot error'If I hit 'Esc' I get to the Grub -meny and can boot as normal.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI successfully installed Fedora 11 from the DVD iso. At the end, the installation program prompts me to reboot the system. But when the boot loader appears after rebooting, there are only the old entries.
I have 2 IDE disks and one sata disk. The first IDE disk is hd0, the second IDE is hd1. The SATA disk is hd2. In the setup, I selected hd0 to install grub. Fedora 11 was installed on the SATA disk (hd2).[edit] I forgot to say, that Fedora 10 is on /dev/sda and Fedora 9 on /dev/sdb
I seem to have determined a few other things about my "only gets as far as a GRUB command line" problem:To recap, sda3 (GRUB hd0,2) is the main Linux partition; sda9 (GRUB hd0,8) is the boot partition.GRUB is 0.92.Installation was from an 8.04LTS live CD (at least, that's what the envelope says it is)/"/boot/grub" (i.e., "/grub" on sd9/hd0,8) contains a "menu.lst" file. I modified it (had to do a "sudo gedit" from a command line!) to (1) comment out the line that hides the boot menu, (2) change the timeout from 3 seconds to 90, and (3) add a menu line based on my succesful manual IPL of DOS.
It still boots to a GRUB command line. If I do a "configfile /grub/menu.lst," a boot menu comes up. DOS will successfully IPL, but Linux still gets a "no setup signature found," (ditto for "recovery mode"), which suggests either a bad kernel, or a kernel that's too big for the GRUB to handle.Why would it be finding its way to grub, but not finding the boot menu file?Why would the live CD come up just fine, yet the GRUB and kernel it installs fail?
i installed ubuntu inside windows but someone instead of uninstalling it directly deleted the ubuntu folder inside windows ,thinking that the partition will be deleted. but when i restarted the system and command prompt came and said unable to find boot record and i couldn't boot windows as well and a grub prompt came like grub>, then i inserted the windows boot cd and repair the boot record error but my problem is , instead of doing this way, can i do so by grub prompt directly without using winidows cd.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI used proprietary software (acronis trueimage) to clone an Opensuse 11.1 machine, onto another machine with somewhat distinct hardware (different motherboard, less memory). I expected to have to change entries in /boot/grub/menu.lst, /etc/fstab, etc. I was told a good way to do this was to use the Opensuse DVD's "repair installed system" feature.
When I ran the repair, I was informed that "bootloader configuration file contains errors". I attempted to re-install the bootloader, but received this unhelpful error: "An error occurred during boot loader installation. Retry boot loader configuration?". When I boot the system, I just see the text "GRUB ", followed by a flashing underscore character.
After upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10 Win7 wouldn't startup any more. So I tried this HowTo: [URL] to restore Grub2. But now each time I boot up I get this two lines: error file not found grub rescue> I have NO idea what to do.

I've been using an install of Ubuntu on Windows XP on my netbook. Iworked fine until recently, when I tried to boot into Ubuntu I got an error message reading:
Try (hd0,0): FAT32: No WUBILDR
Try (hd0,1): NTFS5: No wubildr
Try (hd0,2): invalid or null
Try (hd0,3): invalid or null
Error: Cannot find GRLDR in all devices. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.
I've checked for the wubildr file and it's in its usual place on the C: drive, yet I still get this error message.
