Ubuntu :: Green Pixelated Border Around Logo On Startup
Aug 2, 2010
Since the introduction of the new ubuntu startup screen (in 10.04 I think), I have seen this neon green pixelated border around the white ubuntu text and the 5 dots. It is by no means impacting my productivity, but some of us enjoy having an OS that looks good It starts the moment the decryption screen comes on that asks me for my password (which is the first ubuntu screen I see, after grub).

I've just upgraded ubuntu and i noticed that the ubuntu logo has been replaced with the text "Ubuntu 10.10". When i boot ubuntu i get a black screen for 10-15 seconds and then the text and the five dots. Before the desktop is loaded the computer shows some other text like those in verbose mode.

After I select Ubuntu on GRUB, my screen will briefly flash green or some sort of green/purple pattern, before the Ubuntu loading screen comes up. I have it installed on a partition.

I installed Xubuntu the other night (completely wiped machine) and started doing all the updates on it. After a couple of reboots, I changed from the proprietary drivers, to the regular nVidia drivers. After doing this, the startup logo is displayed at a really low resolution. Is there a simple fix to change this and use the nVidia drivers as well?

I'm writing to ask for help with a quality issue when using my webcam on sites like chatroulette, and even testwebcam. My webcam, albeit not a very expensive webcam, is quite decent quality, the box claims that it is 2.0 megapixels but... I'm not too sure. However-- When using this webcam on flash sites, the quality drops - it seems - from 640 x 480 to a measly 160 x 120. I get a very pixelated image from the webcam, but using it in cheese it works perfectly fine, at 640 x 480.
The webcam also works on windows, and the quality is fine on flash sites. But, I wouldn't want the only reason to be using windows to be chatroulette. Here are some screenshots comparing the qualities, the first being a screenshot of the webcam in use on [URL]... and the second being a screenshot of the webcam in use in cheese. I probably look like a bit of an idiot in both of the pictures, apologies for that.

I have set the hotkey for "Very short backwards jump" and "Very short forward jump" to "Left" and "Right" respectively, and yet pressing the left and right arrow key does not work. Plus when I play the video in fullscreen the subtitles look pixelated.

I've been using RecordMyDesktop to do some simple videos (no fancy effects) and when I play them back, they are all jaggedy and pixelated and barely viewable.

I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid via Terminal, and everything is working nicely. However, after switching the desktop on, the OS loads OK up to GRUB loading, when new Plymouth is supposed to kick in. But all I get is a pixelated image. The five dots still flash correctly signalling the OS is loading. Apart from that, I did not notice anything else wrong.
Just to check whether it was the upgrade process to have gone wrong, I did a fresh install of Kubuntu RC, this time. As soon as I inserted the live CD, however, I could tell the end result would be the same, for the same pixelation appeared while the CD was loading. And in fact, after installation, I got the same problem (see uploaded photo). So, I'm guessing, maybe it depends on my graphic card? I'm on a Matrox G450, which has always worked fine (for example, on Kubuntu it uses kwin without a hiccup). I'm currently on Kubuntu, but the issue occurs both on it and Ubuntu, where Compiz is deactivated (don't even know if that matters), and I'm only on Metacity. If Plymouth can't be correctly displayed by my card, shouldn't it have a sort of fall-back mechanism allowing users like me to have a close-to-normal experience?

I tried to install a a custom splash screen using this guide [URL] and got as far changing the settings with Startup Manager. I found out that I didn't have an 'Appearance' tab so I reverted all the changes I've done in the 'Boot Options' tab. I then closed Startup Manager and rebooted back into linux. Now instead of seeing the purple Unbuntu screen, I see a black screen with a lot of pixelated garbage. Why I don't have the necessary tabs in Startup Manager to install a theme? I'm using a Macbook Pro 5,5.

I've seen a lot of screenshots on gnome-look.org of themes that have nautilus without the ugly sidebar border. However when I install these themes I still get that border.
Example of a theme without the ugly border: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.p...content=124462
I've attached a screenshot of my nautilus with a red stroke indicating the border I am talking about.
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this?

I've been having a recurring problem with the borders of all my windows disappearing along with their associated buttons (minimize, maximize, close). The bar which would normally display the name of the current window appears grey, and all other windows have a thick grey border around them. I noticed some people on here having similar problems and tried applying the solutions in those threads to my problem, but none of them solved the problem permanently. The borders seem to disappear at random shortly after my computer boots. Sometimes it happens as soon as I open a window, other times it takes a few minutes. It always happens though. Here's a link to some screen captures of what I'm experiencing. The one is a shot of GIMP open with borders intact. The other, which I took a few minutes later, is Firefox with the no borders problem. This doesn't really hinder my ability to use my computer, but it certainly is annoying. I do have compiz installed, if that helps any.

Has anyone seen or heard of the following problem? I have a 1in black border surrounding my display. I've been running google searches all day without much luck. My current setup is as follows: Ubuntu 9.10 (64-bit), 24in asus lcd, Radeon 5770, amd phenom 2 x4, ddr3 4gb, gigabyte mb. I noticed the border while running the live cd. I figured it had something to do with the video drivers. Last night I installed ATI's linux driver 10.2. I'm getting my preferred resolution of 1920x1080 over dvi. But i'm not able to use my full 24in. It's like using a 20in lcd.

I have been struggling to change the border color of the windows on Ubuntu without actually changing the theme (e.g., Keeping the "Human" theme, but having the frame borders be a different color than orange.) I have searched Google for some help, but found nothing that works. I have gone to System > Preferences > Appearance and set the 'Selected Items' color [URL] but to no avail. Only the controls changed color, not the window borders.

This isn't a HUGE deal, just a little annoying. When I move the cursor to the edge of a window to resize it, i only get the resize arrow in a very small area and it takes me several tries to get it just right. Is there anyway to broaden the resize area threshold or something?

I recently installed KDE on my Ubuntu setup to try kubuntu by installing the kubuntu-desktop package.I decided I didn't enjoy KDE as much as GNOME, so I went back into GNOME and uninstalled the kubuntu-desktop package via Synaptic. That didn't remove ANY of the stuff that it brought in, so I searched for the keywords "kubuntu" and "kde" and uninstalled all packages but one (libdecoration0) to get rid of all the KDE-mess.Now, after logging back in...THERE IS NO WINDOW BORDER. AT ALL.

(This started after I upgraded from Ubuntu 8 ) Everytime I enable desktop effects (system -> preferences -> appearance) compiz replaces the pretty New Wave window border with the ugly Emerald glass window border (custom border) that I used on Ubuntu 8.

On my system (Ubuntu 9.x -> 10.x) I have always had the problem of not being able to select the edges of a window in order to change the window size. It seems that the 'hot' zone, which defines the window border selection area, is only 1 pixel wide. I find it very difficult to position the mouse pointer over this zone. Even if I am successful (which usually takes more than 20 tries), as soon as I begin to depress the mouse button, the merest movement causes the pointer to move off the 'hot' zone - and selection fails. The only work-around I have found is to select a corner point of a window -which seems much less sensitive - and then drag the window border in either a vertical or horizontal direction, rather than diagonally. But this is counter-intuitive and unsatisfactory.

I just installed 11.04 and was installing everything I wanted fine till I got to installing compiz. It installed fine and ran for a few minutes before my window borders disappeared entirely (see the attached screenshot). I've since tried running metacity --replace, but this makes unity disappear, so I'm left with my open windows only.
PS; I heard that there can be issues with ATI/AMD. Alas, that is my exact setup. I am urged to install proprietary drivers, but they fail to download.

I've been searching and have been unable to find a solution. My current theme is rather dark, for reading at night, etc. And with inactive windows on the screen, the border changes to white from black and makes it difficult on the eyes.
Is there a way to change this inactive color to another, such as black or dark gray?

Code:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
Option "DPMS" "true"
EndSection

I'm trying to use TCM (Toolkit for Conceptual Modeling) but the font used by the application for menus window headers & such is very hard to read. I can change the font used for fields within the application in the configuration file, but there doesn't seem to be a way to change the fonts for the other fonts.
Is there a way to do this through gnome or Ubuntu?
