I've just upgraded ubuntu and i noticed that the ubuntu logo has been replaced with the text "Ubuntu 10.10". When i boot ubuntu i get a black screen for 10-15 seconds and then the text and the five dots. Before the desktop is loaded the computer shows some other text like those in verbose mode.
Since the introduction of the new ubuntu startup screen (in 10.04 I think), I have seen this neon green pixelated border around the white ubuntu text and the 5 dots. It is by no means impacting my productivity, but some of us enjoy having an OS that looks good It starts the moment the decryption screen comes on that asks me for my password (which is the first ubuntu screen I see, after grub).
I installed Xubuntu the other night (completely wiped machine) and started doing all the updates on it. After a couple of reboots, I changed from the proprietary drivers, to the regular nVidia drivers. After doing this, the startup logo is displayed at a really low resolution. Is there a simple fix to change this and use the nVidia drivers as well?
However, I miss the keyboard shortcut options under kde. For instance, I would like to open various software (Chromium, Gimp, etc) with a simple F2, F3 etc. I am assuming I will need to load a start-up application/script to do this.
From tcpdump, we see: 1. client SYN-----> server 2. server SYN/ACK---> client 3. client ACK ----> server 4. client data ----> server 5. client retransmit data some times ----> server 6. server SYN/ACK ----> client (weird, it look like server miss the step 3)
When Wine went from v1.1.xx to v1.2.xx during the life cycle of Fedora 13, the font MS Sans Serif (sserife.fon, et.al.) went away from the Wine font folder. The situation continues in Fedora 14 with its wine v1.3.xx. The effect of this change was that it busted the fonts in some of my Wine applications. The sans serif font that I was used to seeing in those applications became a small hard-to-read serif font. With trial-and-error experiments in an old version, it was not hard to find out that the font these apps had been using was sserife.fon. Copying the old version's sserife.fon file to the new version's wine font folder restored the font, but it looked terrible. And the usual font smoothing and sub-pixel anti-aliasing stuff weren't enough to make it usable. And copying XP's .ttf fonts to ~/.fonts or the font folder in ~/.wine also did no good. Here is what gave me some relief from the ugly font in the new version.Open the wine registry (wine regedit).
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionFontSubstitutes Modify the key "MS Sans Serif" to specify a new substitute font. In my case the substitute font was Liberation Serif (the one I didn't like in my apps). I changed it to Liberation Sans, and I was happy enough again. I also found out today that a wine update resets the registry settings for this particular thing making the font issue return. It takes only seconds to set it back.
Few months back I learnt a *few* concepts about bits/bytes and started writing a program for bit packing in C++. Now that program has grown upto 600 lines and I am still working on it. Yesterday I realized I missed some special cases due to which the program was malfunctioning. Now I have modified the program and it is working properly but I think If I would have designed all the possible test cases before writing the code, I would have finished the program long ago.
I. What is proper way to design the test cases before coding?
II. How should I make sure that I do not miss any cases while making the test case doc. ?
III. Does writing test cases prior to coding solve messy code issues or should I consider something else ?
I like 11.04 with Unity however I would like to find a method of managing workspaces with mouse (not keyboard) which gives constant visual feedback and is faster than using the launcher bar, which although not 'slow', takes time to appear and it then takes time to locate the (non movable) desktop switcher item.I happily adopt most of what 11.04 (Unity) offers, however, I really still miss the good visual feedback and the single click action that the lower panel (classic) desktop switcher used. Is there a way of me using some item in unity which is closely similar?
Does anyone know where I can get the Ubuntu logo as .ttf? And I'm not talking about the text, but the logo itself. If not, then where I can find it as SVG or PDF, so I can convert it into .ttf
When I boot Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx my computer goes through the POST check and all that then boots from the HDD When it's booting the OS all I see is a black screen with "_" flashing on it (without quotes) then a few seconds after I see the Ubuntu logo then the log-in screen appears
I figured out long ago how to change the background image and theme in GDM. It's not that difficult. But I have been suffering forever over how to change the image that is in the login box, directly above my name. I want it to show an Ubuntu or Gnome logo, but right now it just shows a blue box. I can't figure out how to do it, and because I want to learn how this stuff works,I don't want to use a third-party tool such as ubuntu tweaks.
how to change the color of the Ubuntu logo 10.04, the logo that is on the login screen. The logo is white, and I'd like to change it to red or blue. Can I change it in the terminal? If so, can you tell me the command. Or is there another way to get it changed?
I changed the boot splash screen no prob (Plymouth theme).
My second NTFS partion has a wiered text icon instead of the normal hard drive one. My windows C: partition has the right logo but not the second disk. Here is a picture I attached of what is going on.

I got a problem. At the day of New YEar, i got a virus, that my antivirus big time. When i started Windows, i instantly got BSoD. I managed to format my HDD, and now i wanna try to install Ubuntu. It has been working before, but after an update, I can't get further then the logo in the boot process. Now, I don't have any OS. Ubuntu & Kubuntu both just gives me the logo/loading screen, and then goes black..
windows 7 also just goies to "Starting windows"... Prretty annoying.
Think i got 3 GB RAM, 950gb HDD, and 2x 128 MB ATI X-Fire video.
I'm a (very) recent Ubuntu convert. Today I burned the Ubuntu 9.10 ISO to a CD with DiskUtility (Mac) and installed it on an old dell laying around (I installed it on the whole disk--no partition, no trace of Windows left behind). Anyway, it was really awesome and running really fast, until I opened up F-Spot picture manager. It was working well until I went into a slideshow. It started lagging and eventually froze up. I tried pressing f5 to get out of full screen then trying to hit esc and then Alt+4 in an effort to close it.
In the end I had to hold down the power button to make it shut down. When I turned it on again, it started normally and went to the black and white Ubuntu logo, then just went to a black screen. I tried again, and this time got a GNU thing (called Grub, I think?) asking if I wanted to do recovery mode. I entered my username and password and it had an error and went to a black screen. Should I just put my LiveCD back in and install it over my previous installation..?
I am trying to change the ubuntu logo that appears before the applications tab on the top left corner. I tried the different ways I found on google but none of them work, can someone direct me and /or tell me how I can do this?
Firstly when I first installed Ubuntu on my machine, the bootscreen logo was small and high resolution, and it looked nice, however as I started using Ubuntu I must have done something for it to change to large and low resolution.
I try the live cd again and that one is normal, so it must be my settings.. and also when I am shutting down, the screen shows some messages I can't read because it's kind of fast, and the messages are kind of low res too.
i have been trying to change the menu logo icon with the ubuntutweak option.. after i load the 24x24 png image the panel reloads but the image doesnt change... how do i change it? now the menu icon doesnt open the menu at first click, i have to click on it a couple of times and then it opens
i managed to install 10.10 with nomodeset parameter but now i am facing a new issue. After the installation finished i was forceded to restart my system in order the installation to get done. I did it but i ended up with a black screen and ubuntu logo in the middle of it. Do ihave to go through recovery mode and enter something?
I keep trying to use Ubuntu Tweak to change the start button logo, and for some reason it did before, but now it just won't change. Its a 24x24 png with transparency.
How can i replace ubuntu logo,(white logo with black background) which comes very first while booting (it also comes while shuting down) in ubuntu 9.10. I am able to replace other images, which comes after this image. I have done it by replaceing my images with the images present in /usr/share/images/xflash.But it is not possible to replace the mentioned image by this way. Where the above mentioned image (white with black bg) will be stored?
When I try and install Ubuntu 9.10 it gets to the flashing Ubuntu logo, then the screen just goes black. It then says: (initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system. I also tried the disk on a another computer and it worked fine, and I've installed Ubuntu 7.10 on this computer before without a problem.
