Ubuntu :: Random Crashes While Web Browsing / Why Is So?

May 6, 2010

(Update 5/19: I can now reproduce the bug either booted normally or from the live CD)

I've got the strangest bug and no idea what is causing it. While web browsing, sometimes the OS will completely crash. The crash always goes the same way:

First, it shows some text on the screen too fast for me to read, but it looks like red ASCII bullet points followed by white text, both over a black background.

* SOMETHING SOMETHING
* SOMETHING SOMETHING
* SOMETHING SOMETHING

After doing this for about half a second, it enters some kind of loop. The top half of the screen alternates between black/white vertical bars and solid black, while the bottom half of the screen remains solid black.

The only way I've been able to get out of this is by pressing the power button, and doing so shows me the *buntu logo (currently using Xubuntu) and then turns itself off.

Here's why I can't figure out what's wrong:The crash happens in GNOME, KDE, and XFCE. I have since uninstalled KDE because I was just checking to see if it still crashed.
Both Firefox and Google Chrome cause the crash.
No other programs seem to crash this way; just the web browsers. I've played games and listened to music for hours with no problems.
Opening the same pages doesn't reproduce the crash. It happens randomly every hour or so.
Even simple pages (like tabs of JPEGs with no HTML) cause the crash.
This is a recent install from an Ubuntu 10.04 CD.
I was previously using Kubuntu 8.04 and had no issues.

Ubuntu :: Random Crashes And Restarts When Browsing?

Jun 9, 2011

since the launch of Natty I have been having stupid reboots randomly happening, no warning or otherwise occurs just a full reboot. This only seems to happen when browsing (FF or Chrome) and I have disabled every one of my addons and done the usual checks - baffled I am...So I had this with the upgrade I did on launch day, so naturally I did a full wipe and fresh install. Same situation - personally I cannot deal with this happening all the time so I went back with another full wipe to Maverick and all has been well.

Anyway I thought leaving this a few weeks would mean the community would have seen and squashed dealbreaker bugs so I re-installed yesterday, today the crashes came back again so I throw myself to your wisdom - anyone else seen this, know where I should be looking for ideas? My logfiles don't show anything prior to the reboot as an error. In all honesty I do not want to go back to maverick and cannot believe that Ubuntu have released such a bug riddled distro.

Ubuntu :: Boot Options Whilst Working With Open Firmware

May 4, 2010

I am going to attempt to install Ubuntu Linux onto an 500GB USB external hard drive. I was wondering what my boot options where as i am installing on to a powermac G5 that uses open firmware. From the boot menu, i dont have the option to boot to USB(like i can from firewire, CD or Internal HD) though i have found this page;URl...this enables me to boot from usb and works fine with Mac Os X (as i had to do this to boot from a usb stick i installed the os on when doing a spot of data recovery) but i'm not sure if it would boot into linux cleanly. I'm also unsure as to wether in instalation i'd need to install yaboot or not, and if not wether this is actualy an option o n the install cd.

Any info on whether anybody had installed a similar system, had any experience installing onto open firmware for an external Usb hard drive booting system or just any general knowledge about linux on open firmware.

Ubuntu Installation :: Multiple OS, Remove 2 Whilst Saving GRUB?

Jan 20, 2011

Basically my laptop did have a Windows 7 partition that came with the system(which I no longer need), a Ubuntu partition and a separate partition for storage. This was until I formatted the separate partition using Windows and it did something which gave me a file system error and would not let me boot into any os. Then because I was in a rush and had lectures in a hour I installed another Ubuntu partition of 3gb just to reinstall GRUB so I could boot into my original Ubuntu to get my files. Now I would like to delete the 3gb Ubuntu partition and the Windows partition to be left with my original Ubuntu partition and then merge the hard drive into just the one partition. My main fear before I attempt this is again destroying my GRUB. I know I have made a mess of this but would really appreciate being pointed into the right direction. I have done some searching and reading but struggled to find clearish instructions on how to do it properly.

Programming :: Display Images Whilst Running Other Functions?

Nov 4, 2010

So I'm teaching myself some scripting to try and create a fairly simple photobooth type affair... I've got gphoto2 playing fairly nicely with my canon, and imagemagick taking that output and rearranging it to a vertical format...

EDIT:
*smacks forehead*

Fairly simple to do what I needed initially: Code: feh -FZ -D 1 --cycle-once $COUNTDOWN & sleep 2 &
feh -FZ -D 20 --cycle-once $SMILE This shows a countdown from 5 to 1 in images and $SMILE is big that says 'smile'

So my question is thus... (fairly basic but I can't get my head round the use of & and sleep in this context) what's the best way to call my gphoto instructions (or a script with them in) mid way through the above code?!

'feh code'
sleep 5
'gphoto code'

this kind of thing seems like the way, but the'sleep 5' and 'gphoto code' doesn't start until feh is finished in this case?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Radeon HD4870 On Lucid Bar Appears Whilst Dual Screen?

May 7, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit and I'm having a problem with the graphics card.

I have dual screens, and I'm using the default card. My Left screen is perfectly normal but my right screen has a black bar, roughly 2cm wide, along the left hand side of it. And that hole screen is shifted to the left 2cm (so if I maximise a window in it you can't see about 2 cm of the right edge).

I'm not sure why this is happening. Worked on Karmic. Haven't installed anything, just the defaults. My graphics card is a Radeon HD 4870.

Also, I couldn't get Compiz to work with this card on Karmic, is it possible to get it to work here on Lucid? I heard they were improving the drivers. If so, how?

OpenSUSE :: Gnome 3 - Evolution Not Receiving Mail Whilst Running?

May 5, 2011

I'm new to openSuse after installing it on my work machine as a replacement for Ubuntu.

I have Evolution mail up and running and all is well other than I am having a problem when receiving mail.

When I first start Evolution, it checks and downloads my new mail without any issues however whilst it is running it won't download any mail, either automatically or manually via the Send & Receive button.

It appears to be checking my accounts (the progress box pops up briefly) and is not reporting any errors, just not downloading until I close Evolution and then restart.

Sending is working perfectly.

I must admit that I "imported" my old mail in a bit of a cack-handed fashion and did have to uninstall/re-install Evolution - I noticed that it uninstalled a few extra packages however when I reinstalled, it only selected the main Evolution packages.

The fact that it is receiving on Evolution start-up I think rules out my settings being incorrect.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Hard Disk Frequent Head Unloads - Disk Clicking Whilst Idle?

Jun 2, 2010

I created a thread about a problem a I had with my hard disk clicking whilst idle little while ago and I may now have stumbled upon a possible solution. The strange thing with the problem is that Ubuntu/Kubuntu didn't cause this problem but Opensuse 11.2 does.

I installed Fedora 13 to have a glimpse of what all the fuss was about and noticed that I had the same problem (hard disk clicking whilst idle ~ every 20 secs or so). Now there's a wiki on this subject and a few bug reports: [url]

Problem Description

Some ATA harddrives perform very frequent head unloads under Linux significantly shortening their lifespans. Root cause

The inactivity timer for head unload is configured too aggressively either via ATA APM (Advanced Power Management) feature or other non-standard means. Such aggressive settings are very fragile to changes in IO pattern and under Linux many such drives unload their heads only to re-load them shortly. Note that this relentless unloading/reloading cycle can also be triggered under Windows by installing programs which can alter the IO pattern (e.g. certain vaccine programs which runs in background).

Now two of the listed models with this problem are basically identical to my model (Dell Inspiron 1520) and basically share the same hardware: Dell Vostro 1500 and XPS 1520.

The workaround listed is to:

set APM to 254

Furthermore, there is a script: Storage-Fixup which can also be downloaded from opensuse software search. Indeed there is a report of this for a Vostro 1500: Gmane Loom

The report suggests looking at: Disk Power Management - openSUSE which lists a method to create a configuration file to management disk power management:

My question is whether I could download the storage-fixup rpm [url] has a description of it and it can be found: Software.openSUSE.org) and install it to (hopefully) solve the issue or should I follow the method given in: Disk Power Management - openSUSE

to set APM to 254:

Code:

This something I have only experienced since the final install.I'm using a fresh firefox profile with NO extensions currently. The only change I have made is to disable ipv6 to see if it helped with the following problem. Browsing web pages is stupidly slow and much slower than I am used to.Downloading in firefox is normal and running at speeds I would expect. For example, I have downloaded several distro .iso's over the past two days and they have been consistently downloading at 1MB/s +This is only affecting browsing web pages and it's affecting all of them, even the basic google search page takes at least twice as long as normal.

web browsing is going SUPER slow in my samsung N150 netbook with dual boot(win7/ubuntu10.04). Windows counterpart working flawlessly.

Into the details:

The problem is, i go into a website and it seems to renderize by chunks, ie i enter my favorite PC hardware forum and it is like this when loading: Processors...1sec....Vid cards....1sec...Memory...and on and on until the bottom of the page is reached. The normal behavior is: Click...forum loaded ,as on windows.

By default i use my wireless conection, but also tried wired one to no avail. Also tried it from the live cd and i have the same problem. Some sitess like google, gmail and ..... load normally(instantly). I've tried disabling ipv6 as adviced in several parts and had no results. I used the default firefox 3.6.6, firefox 3.6.7 and chrome with the same results.

When I changed my router to Open DNS settings that seemed to fix the slows and when I replaced the Open DNS IP's with the Google IP's, things were even quicker. Now I am back to the slows but there is no resolution latency it's just a delay when clicking a link, nothing happens and then the page eventually loads but you see the ads write on the page after the text loads. It's just not snappy. My nsswitch.config looks like this:
