General :: Boot Options Whilst Working With Open Firmware?
May 4, 2010
I am going to attempt to install Linux (probably Ubuntu) onto an 500GB USB external hard drive. I was wondering what my boot options where as i am installing on to a powermac G5 that uses open firmware. From the boot menu, i dont have the option to boot to USB(like i can from firewire, CD or Internal HD) though i have found this page;[URL]... this enables me to boot from usb and works fine with Mac Os X (as i had to do this to boot from a usb stick i installed the os on when doing a spot of data recovery) but im not sure if it would boot into linux cleanly. I'm also unsure as to wether in instalation i'd need to install yaboot or not, and if not wether this is actualy an option o n the install cd.
Any info on whether anybody had installed a similar system, had any experience installing onto open firmware for an external Usb hard drive booting system or just any general knowledge about linux on open firmware would be great.

So I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.
I can't my system because of this error: Code: linux-firmware: /lib/firmware/radeon/R700_rlc.bin exists in filesystem Note that in the beginning, it asks:
Code: :: Replace kernel26-firmware with core/linux-firmware? [Y/n] There are so many updates by now that the list fills in a few pages in the terminal! Also, I wonder why so many Arch updates get stuck or broken compared to almost any other distro? Is it poorly designed packages? Is it a design flaw in pacman/the package format?
I can get to the grub screen where boot options are editable, but where do I add the above code? And will it "stick" or do i have to input the code every time i boot?
I'm trying to solve is a non-responsive Dell Inspiron 2600 keyboard. I'll tackle the non-responsive trackpad once i get the keyboard working!
I thought running an update from my OpenSuse 11.3 dvd would solve my problem, but It doesn't; I'm not given the option to choose a gui environment. It leaves me at a prompt here. /home//
Is it possible to install and use Flash Player whilst running under a Tor enabled browser. I have seen a version compiled to run under Windows but don't want to go backwards! I am running Ubuntu 10.10.
I have installed a Virtual machine.I use Virtual Box for the same. My host OS is Windows XP SP3. I have assigned it 500mb of Ram and it works fine. But my problem is that my Keyboard does not work in Ubuntu terminal whilst writing a source code.
When I use the arrow keys it gives me alphabets A B C D. And also when i press a . it acts as a backspace.I have a cordless Logitech Keyboard.I don't know why my keyboard isn't functioning inside the Terminal (& that to only whilst typing in source codes) I have tried changing the Character Encoding but thats not helping.
I have an issue that is fixed by changing the lpfc driver to run using MSI interrupts. This is done by adding "options lpfc lpfc_use_msi=2" /etc/modprobe.conf.local file.
Is there a way to make this change using kernel boot parameters?
I have recently installed Unbuntu Desktop 10.10 on a partition alongside my normal Windows 7 x64 install. I expected to have only one OS boot menu which I would be able to edit via msconfig.exe in Windows. However I have two seperate sets of boot menus. The first one contains a bunch of different Ubuntu boot options and also contains an option to boot to Windows 7 (this is last in the list).
The first boot menu defaults to Ubuntu and is on a short timeout. I want to change this to default to Windows 7 and increase the timeout.Google tells me to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and although I do have a grub folder I don't seem to have a file called menu.lst: Change default operating system at boot
I have Intel Pentium dual core T4300 2.10ghz processor in dell inspiron laptop. i had windows vista home basic by default and then i got ubuntu 9.04 installed on it from one of my friend. i was using ubuntu mostly (and upgraded it to ubuntu 9.10)as i never liked vista. so i installed windows 7 over windows vista. now vista is gone and windows 7 is working. but i no more see the boot options and cant access ubuntu at all. the boot options (F12) does not show linux partition at all. however the linux partition is seen in device manager. but its only seen. how do i retrieve my old boot options including linux os? which asks me which os to boot from.
I am trying to perform a hard drive installation of RHEL 5.5. I specify the installation method and the partition and directory holding the ISO image in /etc/grub.conf
Code:
However, I am still presented with the "Installation Method" and "Select Partition" screens when anaconda runs. Is the syntax of the repo boot option correct?
I have a dualboot system with Ubuntu and Windows 7 (grub bootloader). I updated the firmware in my HD, and now grub doesn't work. After POST, instead of getting the menu of OS options, I get "Non-system disk: press any key."After pressing a key, I get the Windows 7 loader, with only a Windows 7 OS option. Windows 7 boots fine, but I have no way to boot into Ubuntu.
just want to report "Right Mouse Click Freeze" on Ubuntu 10.10. When I click on anything with my right mouse button to open options menu it freezes and does not open menu. Sometimes when I shake my mouse left/right a bit it opens that menu, but this does not work always. It seems like xserver issue, but I'm not sure since I'm not expert in linux yet. It's very annoying issue that I would like to resolve asap.

I just upgraded from Fedora 14 to 15 and am having problems getting my wireless internet to work. I never had it working in Fedora 14 as it told me "firmware was missing." I have tried many different approaches described online and non have seemed to help me. I have an HP dv6700 laptop with a Broadcom "Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)" chipset. I have installed the Broadcom-wl set from yum as well.
This is a problem that has been stabbing at me for years now. I have a nice pro-m soundcard - the EMU 0404 - with the cursed "1102:0004" device ID. I am wondering if anyone has gotten the early version of the 0404 (0004 / firmware 1.0 version) of the card working with Linux? All the information I can find is a couple years out of date. Maybe everyone just gave up when the later versions of the cards started to work with ALSA, but I really can't afford to replace this thing.
Regardless, if anyone has gotten this to work please let me know. If I really just need to resign myself to throwing the card away / taking a $150 loss on a new one, I'd also like to know,
I am using a hp pavilion zd7000, computer says firmware is missing for wireless controller. i also have a wirless g notebook card made by belkin which will scan for networks but wont connect to them for some unknown reason. if i can get either the wireless g card to work or the built in wireless to work thata be great. I am well experienced in windows but very new to linux and how everything works.
Im having an annoying problem here, after the reinstallation of opensuse, bluetooth works fine, i can connect my cell phone and logitech mouse normally, as soon as i install the bcm43xx from the scrtipt included in /usr/sbin/ bluetooth stops connecting to devices, it can find tem when searching but the forward button is dimmed.
when i try hcitool scan,= it successfully finds the device, hcitool cc xxxxxxx it reports an I/O error,
I am trying to streamline my boot screen/GRUB Menu. I know what I want it to look like (grub_wanted.jpg), and I think I know how to get it by uninstalling a couple of things, (synaptic.jpg). Now I have too many items on the screen, and it looks cluttered to me (grub.jpg).
I'm a noob but enjoying dual booting. However, every time I run update manager I get a new vmlinuz entry and now I have multiple boot options in my grub boot menu. Now when I have like 5 ubuntu entries to move past to select Windows. and the latest Ubuntu is always at the bottom so I have to annoyingly scroll down to select the latest there. I don't really understand what the vmlinuzXXX entries in the boot folder are for so I don't want to delete them. I've thought about editing the loop in the 10_linux file in the grub.d folder but it looks like its calling a function or macro or something:
Code: linux='version_find_latest $list'
But like I said, I'm a noob to all this (a .Net developer on Windows professionally) and don't understand where this is. It looks like this function call has the logic I need to fix. Because its not finding the latest, its just finding all. How to I get back to one Ubunutu boot option like when I first installed?
I would like to upgrade from Win8.1 to Debian 8. This post might require some Wind expertise as well. I have to deal with the dreaded UEFI interface.
I got the iso with the added firmware from here: [URL] ....
The i386 download and it appears to be 334 MB. I pretty got it because I don't want to mess with the wireless controller (been there done that.)
As far as the Wind side goes I disabled secure boot. Just whenever I get to the fancy blue screen, I select boot from EFI DVD. Then it just says it can't load it and asks if I want to continue loading the OS. This might be useful I used the default Desktop Burning Gadget to burn the disk image.
after installing Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04, I'm experiencing tons and tons of complications with the wireless Internet connection. I have solved most of them. Now I have only one thing left. When I hit the drop-down menu for wireless connections, it says "Wireless connection (Firmware missing)"
I have installed the driver for my wireless card but what is the firmware? I honestly don't know what it is although it's very basic. I have a Broadcom 43xx as my wireless card (specifically 4306). How do I get the firmware for it? Do I find it in Windows? Also I cannot get b43-fwcutter because I have absolutely to Internet connection on Ubuntu. To post this, I'm using Windows.
This problem goes back to when I first purchased my laptop 4 years ago: Dell Precision M90. It came with Vista, but I wanted Ubuntu on instead. In order to get bluetooth to work, I had to downgrade the firmware. This is all fine and means bluetooth works in XP too. However, now, I have a dual boot with Windows 7 and Squeeze, I use Vista drivers (as Dell don't provide 7 drivers) and this has upgraded the firmware, and broken bluetooth in Squeeze. How can I get bluetooth working in both Squeeze and Windows 7? Could changing the hardware help? If so, what to?
upgraded to 10.04 on pangolin performance laptopset power option to never suspend or hibernate or shut down using AC or batteryhowever...the system suspends after a few minutes of idle time, requiring a password to log back on
In our apache web server, we have a number of virtual hosts running. I wanted to create an alias to a folder only to a specific virtual host. So what I did is, in the virtual host configuration section of that specific site, I added as below:
[Code]..
However, with this configuration,if index.html is not present in the system , I am still able to see directory listing of all files under that folder myfiles. What could be going wrong ? Why "options" directive of is not working once it is placed inside <directory > of <virtualhost>? If I move <directory> in the main httpd.conf (ie , outside virtual host section), then again it works fine. But I don't want this as I don't want other virtual hosts also to be able to access to that directory... In the main httpd.conf, I have something like
Open office pdf converter not working. I have installed openoffice 3 and python module UNO on the server and i want to convert document file to pdf format.
i've recently installed Ubuntu 9.10, and i am trying to get java6 jre working. using "sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jre" the package downloads and works fine until i run into this screen: Now this must look like everything is working fine....and i should just click the ' OK ' button...that is where the trouble begins...i can't....and i was hoping someone would know the problem...
I recently uninstalled some unnecessary libs thinking that I could work around without them. It turned out I couldn't. So I installed every single one, and it seemed like everything was working fine. But then I tried to boot, and was thrown into a low-graphics. Well I tried to boot in a low-graphics environment temporarily but it turned out X just restarted. Then I tried to reconfigure the settings, but choosing any option it threw me back into the last menu without any action being taken.
So I googled up some lines it was vomiting at me and it indeed might be my xorg not configured properly. but every time I try to reconfigure it and I look into the .conf file it turns out it is completely blank. maybe I should also note I am sporting a 64 bit bubuntu, not an NVidia though, Intel Series 4 express chipset family thing. I think it is a GMA4500MHD but not sure, what shall I do so that I don't have to reinstall my beautiful pimped out system?
