I have properly ejected a USB memory stick and removed it from the port, but it remains in my 'Places', on the side pane of Nautilus. The /media directory is empty.
View 1 RepliesI am running Lenny. USB storage devices are painfully slow, if the data to be copied is above 4GB it works on transferring for more than half an hour and then comes up with an error dialog(saying something like file size is too big). The problem exists in both read and write.
I did google a bit and here is the output of lsmod | grep hci

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit and I'm having a problem with the graphics card.
I have dual screens, and I'm using the default card. My Left screen is perfectly normal but my right screen has a black bar, roughly 2cm wide, along the left hand side of it. And that hole screen is shifted to the left 2cm (so if I maximise a window in it you can't see about 2 cm of the right edge).
I'm not sure why this is happening. Worked on Karmic. Haven't installed anything, just the defaults. My graphics card is a Radeon HD 4870.
Also, I couldn't get Compiz to work with this card on Karmic, is it possible to get it to work here on Lucid? I heard they were improving the drivers. If so, how?
Yes, if my wife logs on it's on her desktop. If I switch user it will not appear and I can't access it. It's a 'freeagent' hard drive

The problem is that when I open up nautilus and click the Computer icon in the toolbar (which gives the fake computer:/// address) I see two items referring to my Storage partition:
* Storage (which appears to be of "unknown type" in the properties).
* 500 GB Hard Disk: Storage (which is the one that works).
Hybrid Storage harddisks use a large non-volatile cache to save power and improve speed. I wanted to ask if there's a reasonably simple way to simulate that under Linux. Ideally there would be a FUSE-filesystem that does this, For now this is purely theoretical, but my setup would be a small home server (Sheeva Plug) with an external USB harddisk that goes to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity. To keep it powered down as long as possible, I would like to use a 16GB SD card as a cache for the harddisk, thus simulating Hybrid Storage.
The only possible solutions I found thus far were Hierarchical storage management packages for enterprise use, which are way too expensive for this task.
Hard drive is connected to my Inspiron 1525 via USB, plugged in and I'm not seeing the new drive mounted. Restart doesn't fix things and manually trying to mount /dev/sdb1 doesn't work either. The drive I got is preformatted as NTFS and I've been using a logical partition formatted as NTFS as a sort of share drive between my Windows partition and Ubuntu partition, so I know I have NTFS set up properly. This is the hard drive I'm working with for reference.

Both systems will boot up fine its just that for some reason it won't boot to the internal drive (with vista) unless the external is connected. I just put the HD in another laptop only to have the same problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got Vista installed on my notebook and I've bought an external drive (1,5 TB, but its size shouldn't matter in this case) and after formatting it I left 10 gigs for future purpose. Now, I decided to install 64bit debian on the unallocated 10 gigs. And so I did. To be precise: I have SATA drive inside my lap and hard drive (it's also SATA inside the cover) connected to my lap through USB. Boot sequence was 1)CD/DVD 2)hard drive 3)removable drive. During the installation the installer detected my internal drive as /dev/sda and my external drive as /dev/sdb. I decided to install grub on /dev/sdb (it was logical to me, since I didn't want to mess up my regular drive's MBR). Installer created 5 partitions on my USB drive. After booting from my external drive (look below*) I've got a message saying

On my internal drive there were (during the installation and running the live cd) 3 partitions detected (vista os, data, rescue disk) so I don't understand the output that ls in rescue console gave me. about booting from external drive: I did that after pressing ESC - I've got a prompt to choose which device I want to boot from - this wasn't working properly; after changing the boot sequence the grub started but with the abovementioned error message...
If there's any info about exact names/types/devices of my installed partitions needed I will run live CD and check it. If any other info is required I will provide it (I tried to describe the problem in the most precise way ) What I was thinking about: maybe there is a problem with ordering of the devices - when I boot from DVD my removable disk is treated as the "second one" and after booting from the removable disk it becames the "first one" or something like that? If any of you have any good info on how mapping of the device names works it would be appreciated, since I couldn't find anything useful or I just don't know what to ask google about.
1) How to install Debian on a removable disk (I had no problems with installing Linux on pendrive but I did that from VirtualBox and it was some time ago) OR how to install GRUB on a removable disk? (unfortunately, I cannot install 64bit system through VirtualBox)
2) What's the logic behind naming devices under /dev? How come the devices in grub have their names mapped as hdx etc and I've read that hdx are the names for IDE/ATA drives and sdx is the proper name for a SATA or USB device
a friend of mine just given me an old 2004 IBM NetVista 8305 desktop and suggested to use Linux Ubuntu which is something new to me. So i installed it via USB memory stick & it works. After installation of the OS I am impressed with functionality & speed. when i conect the external hard drive via usb it doesn't show & i tried my usb flash disc it showed the same problem. I tried both disk in my laptop (Windows XP) & it works.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've used both 9.10 and 10.04, but I noticed, when I in 9.10 mounted my external HD and then safely removed it (without removing the USB-cable) it used to flash for 3-4 seconds (indicator-light) and then go out.
Now, in 10.04, it just keeps flashing (indicator-light), even though I have removed it safely (not unplugged it though). Why would it do this? The indicator-light should only flash if there is activity going on on the HD?
Are there any tools in Ubuntu that could defragment my MP4 player (Sansa E280R)? One of the songs on my MP4 player isn't showing its Album Name or Artist Name. I know I have the artist and album name tagged onto the MP3 because I set them both & double checked using mp3tag.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot Dell Studio laptop with Windows (VISTA) and Ubuntu (9.0.4) installed on it. I have recently installed Ubuntu to make it a dual boot. Before that I was using LiveUSB Ubuntu image for six months (without any problems).
During the installation of Ubuntu, I created a Linux partition of 2GB for Ubuntu installation (assuming that it was running successfully on my 2GB USB drive). All of my other work (e.g. documents/programming projects etc.) are stored on the Windows partition (which is loaded during the boot time automatically). The problem is that I get a "permission denied" error while running any executable file on the Windows partition. But if I copy the same executable on the Linux partition, everything works perfect. Am I missing something here?
I have verified that the executable have necessary execute permissions.
Running various applications, including Open Office, I need to open files from my external hard drive, from within said application itself. But the file menus for all my applications list only the files of my primary hard drive, and I can't look at other drives. Surely there must be some way to do this.

I do not want to buy an external hard disk and then keep moving it between both. Now, strange as it may sound, is it possible to somehow connect my server to the PC and expose a given local hard disk connected to the server, as an external USB drive to the TV?

View 6 Replies View RelatedAs part of our back up strategy we back up data to two external strorage devices (NAS buffalo linkstation) via a cron job. Recently I noticed that the linkstation backups were not working and the server (via the terminal) complained about CIFS write error or something along these lines. I decided to reboot the server and this fixed the problem for one week for one of the linkstations and for a few weeks for the other linkstation.
There are no error messages this time on the server or on any of the logs that I have checked but the backups are not being made and the processes are still running for the days that backups have not been made.
the backups used to work everyday without fail until recently and no changes have been made to the script that does the backup..

I just upgraded to 15 and was wondering if it was possible to specify which devices to prioritize a route through. I have my machine, a laptop, connected to my family's router for an internet connection and a wired connection to a personal router for a faster and private connection between my other two computers and a network storage device. Whenever the laptop is connected to my personal router everything goes through it and it can't connect to any external web sites. But when I unplug it and go only on my family's wireless everything is fine, except I can't connect to the storage device since it has no external connections.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just recently installed ubuntu. I had always used windows before, and I wanted to try something different. My laptop's internal HDD is pretty full so I decided to install ubuntu on my 500gb external HDD. It is connected via USB A to USB B. So I run through the installation no problems at all. I partitioned 200gb of the external HDD for ubuntu. After install I could run ubuntu just fine and I really like it.
However now it boots through GRUB. I am not really sure what GRUB is but it says GRUB loading every time I boot up and then lets me choose what os to boot, but if I do not have my external HDD plugged in then GRUB fails to start and I cannot boot at all from my laptop. Is there a way that I can get it to boot windows from the internal HDD without having the external HDD?
I have a Coby MP3 player which functions as a USB drive. It has always worked fine, both on Ubuntu Karmic and on the Windows (booted from another disk).
Now, in Ubuntu, it appears as read-only (but it works fine when I boot into Windows on the same machine). How can I deal with this? It's not a matter of my fstab, which I have never manually edited; the USB device is always auto-detected.
So my aim is to install openSUSEx64 11.3 onto my Macbook; but for whatever reason, upon boot-up, the system won't recognize the USB thumb drive with the expanded image of openSUSE on it. I followed steps in Terminal to expand the image onto the said USB stick and know it worked properly because Terminal said "Process Completed." Do I need a special type of USB thumb drive or am I missing something? I am using a late-2009 Macbook. By the way, these were the steps used to prep the USB thumb stick:
1. Open a Terminal (under Utilities)
2. Run diskutil list to get the current list of devices
3. Insert your flash media
4. Run diskutil list again and determine the device node assigned to your flash media (e.g. /dev/disk2)
5. Run diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN
6. Execute sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.img of=/dev/diskN bs=1m
7. Run diskutil eject /dev/diskN and remove your flash media when the command completes
How can I detect when an external monitor is connected in linux? I need to run various scripts to set up my workspace. Is there some clever way to kick off a script when the monitor state has changed? I'm using the Nvidia display driver.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have proftpd setup on my Aspire Revo (which I'm using as an HTPC) so that I can download files to my mac when I feel like watching in bed or whatever. I recently purchased a 1TB WD Elements to store my media. I have proftpd setup so that I can access every file on the computer. However, when I try to gain access to the Elements HD, I get an FTP error from Cyberduck that says:
/media/Elements: no such file or directory
Note that I have not formatted the drive or anything - just set it up straight out of the box. My media is loaded on to it, and XBMC reads the files fine. Is there a way I can enable the hard drive (or the OS) to share these files over FTP, or is this not possible?
