I have a Dell laptop and have multi-media buttons, some of which control the audio volume. But once a game is running like Sauerbraten, I cannot control the volume. The controls within the game are relative to the master volume, so if the volume is too low, I have to exit the game to adjust it.

It doesn't have nearly enough options for a proper volume control program. Pulse is much better for my needs. It or Alsa. Is it possible to remove mate-volume-control, or at least make Pulse the default volume control?

My trackpad also does not work so I have to open documents manually if I don't bring my mouse to class.
I wanting to build a media player/PVR MythTV linux PC for my TV which will be capable of simultaneously encoding video(both h.264/MPEG-4 and xvid) whilst playing back 1080p video. That way I can watch hd video I've recorded whilst I'm recording and converting another programme in the background.

I've got openSUSE 11.2 installed. Works quite well in general.Today I tried using my microphone for the first time but had no success. I tried to playing with volume settings but to no avail.I recording something with arecord -f cd test.wavand tried playing it back with aplay test.wavbut got nothing.Then I thought I'd look at my sound card configuration. I selected the "Configure your sound card" from the start menu. And to my astonishment no card has been configured (I was surprised because I am able to hear sounds, play music, etc.).Anyway, I tried configuring my card. OK, so I have a samba share on my Ubuntu server that holds my mp3 files, and I can play these files from which ever PC in the house whether its my Laptop (Linux) or Desktops (mix of Windows, Linux & Mac) At the moment my Windows Desktop PC has a sound system connected to it and I vnc to that computer to change tracks create playlists etc to play through the nice sound system, however I want to be able to play through local rhythmbox or similar and play the sound via the networked windows (xp) pc.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've added this packman repo: Index of /suse/openSUSE_11.4/ and installed all the necessary libraries and tools required as mentioned here using zypper: Restricted formats/11.4 - openSUSE Community Wiki When I try to play any movie in VLC I'm able to hear the audio for some time usually 3-4 mins and then audio totally stops though the video continues to play. A random seek or a seek forward/back also cause similar issue almost immediately. I switched the output module in VLC preference to different settings: default, SDL, Unix OSS, Alsa but the same issue persists. The audio recovers if I just enter the Audio settings menu in VLC preferences and click Save (even without changing anything) but after the same 3-4 mins or by seeking, the audio stops.
I disabled Pulseaudio for my sound card(s) in Yast->Sound, and I even kill the pulseaudio process but it somehow starts itself up again when I change anything in VLC audio preferences or even simply click Save without any changes. I've made sure all the multimedia related packages are installed from the packman repo whenever possible (I still observe there are few packages which do not exist on the packman but the openSUSE 11.4 repo alone eg. phonon-backend-gstreamer, phonon-backend-xine) Here is the rpm query output for the multimedia related libraries:

my problem is regarding .asx live streams. Up till 2-3 weeks ago I was able to listen to [URL] perfectly well with Totem under Ubuntu 9.10.
Since then whenever I want to start the stream, Totem darkens and nothing happens. I've tried Mplayer and VLC as well but neither of them work (but that's not news because they didn't work when Totem did either).
I had a look at the recent package updates in Synaptic to see if any audio-related ones had been changed and I have downgraded libaudiofile0 (to version 0.2.6-7ubuntu2) and gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad (to version 0.10.14-4ubuntu1). The problem still remained, so I updated them again.
The radio chanel works perfectly under Windows, and other .asx streams (for example [URL]) are working fine with Totem in Ubuntu.
how to import, link, save and display the lyrics of the song being played? I am using VLC for all audio and video files. If VLC does not have this functionality any other media player will do.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem where almost every audio player creates a 2-3 second delay after playing any audio.
I'm working on some text-to-speech using espeak and festival. Festival would provide much better speech quality, but it created a 2-3 second delay after any speech before the application exited, which prevents using it. When I started investigating the issue, it turned out that many other programs display the same behavior.
For example, if I play a 1-second WAV of silence using "play", it displays "Done" very soon and then waits for 2-3 seconds before exiting. mplayer does the same. mpg123 does the same. mpg321 does the same. ogg123 does the same.
When playing multiple files mpg123 and ogg123 do not generate the pause between the files, but mplayer does. I'm wondering can there be a bug that causes programs to hang when closing the audio device?
That's so many programs it must be some kind of problem in the system, not the individual programs. However not every program displays this behavior; espeak exits immediately after the speech has ended. (Might it for instance exit without closing the audio device properly?)
I haven't noticed anything similar before I upgraded to 10.10. I'm running XUbuntu on a Thinkpad T60. The laptop has an Intel HD Audio with AD1981HD codec [url].
Having recently bought a new box (HP Pavilion) I discovered that it is using sata HD and CD/DVD. As there are no specific switches to use when installing to sata drives, I assume that Debian Squeeze is configured to work with sata drives "out of the box", which, in my case, it is failing to do. For the sake of completeness, these are the issues I am encountering, in no order of priority:
* DVD/CD-RW can read data CDs
* Can write to DVD and CD using K3B
* Can play DVDs that I've burnt
* Typing "eject" (no quotes) on the command line will open the drive
But:
* Cannot play audio CDs - Rhythmbox is the only application that can. Amarok does, but then doesn't update track lists when a new CD is inserted and I must quit Amarok and restart it for it to pick up the new track lists. KsCD can identify the tracks but does not play an audio CD (even when the config file is changed to point to the drive). Goobox claims "invalid device" even though when using it on the command line I set the "--device==/dev/sr0" (no quotes) to point to the device. When I press the eject button, Goobox seg faults. I have tried a number of other applications, including cdplay, workman, cdcd, and a couple of others the names of which I now forget, some GUI and some command line. None of these have been able to play the audio CD, and many have claimed drive does not exist at all, again, even when manually pointed to it.
* Cannot play pre-recorded (i.e. commercial) DVDs, irrespective of the application used. To make DVDs work, I must go into the folder and double click the correct VIDEO-TS file (*.vob)

This is confirmed by hardinfo and uses a scsi1 controller. The kernel I am using is kernel 2.6.26-2-686 on an AMD Sempron Dual Core 2300 and I am running Squeeze with no other OS. Is this an issue with GNU/Linux generally or with Debian specifically? Interesting, but one Google search showed that Fedora didn't have such a problem but when the user switched to Debian he found a similar issue. I don't think that the drive itself is broken and nor do I think that changing the drive for something else will work, because I'd still have to use the sata connections.
I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 recently to find that my computer will not play mp3 files in Rythmbox, Amarok, or Kaffeine media players. All of the FLAC files I have ripped from CDs work, but no mp3 files work. I have downloaded and installed the ubuntu restricted codecs from Synaptic as well as the codecs prompted by Rythmbox rebooted, and still no result.Like I said, the .FLACs play fine.On another note, no sound is being transmitted to my earbuds. The only sound will come from the laptop speakers.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem with my audio chipset. I have a Gigabyte MA770-UD3 motherboard with the ALC888 audio chipset. Any audio that plays is extremely low. I have to turn my speakers all the way up to hear anything at a decent level. I tried using alsaconf but command not found.

I Tried to play video files (.avi & .vob) in Kaffeine, but was unableo hear any audio. Then i went to the packmn site and installed the packageom there, with no positive results.After that i installed VLC and then tried playing.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just installed 11.4 64bit and duly followed the sticky guide for getting the required multimedia files installed. I find I have a problem with playing audio cd's the only program which will play an audio cd is Kaffeine but it does not play properly - it plays a few bars then silence, plays a few bars then silence and I can find no way of getting it to play without interruption. There are no sound problems with Kaffene when using it to play digital tv or dvd films. I have tried KsCD, Amarok, Mplayer, SMPlayer, and GNOME MPlayer none of which can I get to play a CD. With Amarok there does not appear to be a setting to play a CD as soon as it is put in the drive it would appear that you have to generate a playlist first, I can show the list of tunes on the CD but that's a far as it goes they will not add to a playlist or play.
Have just found the player Clementine which apparently is based on Amarok. Although not providing a direct play facility I was able to load the cd to the playlist then play the tunes. This may be a clue to my problems in that I noticed that it had to mount the player first. Is there a setting for auto mounting?Ideally I would like to put an audio cd in my player and have it play automatically without me having to do anything. Is this facility available in 11.4 and if so which program do I need to install?
My Audio stops playing when switching to console from Xorg. When I switch back it continues playing. Is it supposed to be like this? Any way I can make it play continuously? I've already checked the Howtos and this forum for this problem but havent found anything similar.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try to play AC3 audio, after a few minutes, the audio dies and never recovers. This doesn't occur with mp3's / etc, although once the audio dies because of AC3, it's gone for good. So this is probably related to surround sound(?).
After I lose audio, speaker-test produces

K-Mixer won't even open afterwards. I flipped from GNOME to KDE because of this problem (PulseAudio freezed the system entirely).

I'm running squeeze (last updated today), and everything has been working great. There is only thing that would simplify my life minutely..Anybody know how can I have the volume buttons on my laptop change the "pcm" channel volume rather than "master"? If they could control pcm, then I could adjust the volume coming out of my headphones or my computer speaker (both controlled by pcm, but not master...seems strange to me) with just one click.I tried to find this info online, but all results seem to refer to an older version. The simple "click here, set this" solution no longer is possible.

So if I turn the volume all the way down with the physical buttons, the volume applet may still indicate 75%.I did not have this problem in Debian Lenny. Pressing the volume buttons used to show a volume bar on the screen, as did pressing the mute button.

(this is for a kiosk that doesn't have room for extra powered speakers) Every time I reboot it resets output volume to 100%. Is there a way to change the volume back to 125% or whatever max is so the general public can hear the video that is played after a reboot? (this is to be a permanent installation that won't even have a keyboard or mouse attached, so automating this is a must)
I need to have "Visual effects" set to None in order to play 3d games or other tasks such as watching DVDs, etc. The reason is that I get very poor FPS if visual effects are enabled. For example, I can have 150 frames per second on Quake, but with visual effects it drops down to 30. Movies will jitter and flicker a lot until I turn off the effects. I don't have a weak machine; 2 GB memory and 2 Ghz. Nvidia 8400 graphics. This problem was on Vista when I had that on my laptop years ago.

I'm trying to figure out what is the problem. I used Ubuntu 8.10 in the past and never encounter a problem like this. It keep freezing the computer 3 to 5 times a day. I check varies of sys.log, kernel.log, any kind of log you could think of and they not showing any reason why it froze. This is the only last thing it wrote because it froze

This is always what it ended up with every time it froze. I check the log and it usually on that message. and I switched back to the previous kernel and assumed it the newest kernel causing problem. I had this problem before in my Ubuntu 8.10, so i switched to the previous kernel and the problem is solved. So on my ubuntu 9.10, I switched to the previous kernel, it still have the same result. I'm running out of ideas. I been thinking about switching to 8.10. The reason why I like 9.10 because of ext4 support
I achieved to create a stream of the audio output of my sound card. ices2 and icecast2. I receive it with an internet radio device (NOXON). Works alright, but the volume is far too low.
