OpenSUSE Install :: Clean Install 11.4 Dual Boot System Grub Error?

Apr 27, 2011

I did a fresh install of SuSE 11.4 (WIN7 TOO) and changed my Larger HD1 to the first HD. I was installing and got this error first: the boot loader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128GB The system might not boot if BIOS supports only lba24 (result is error during install grub mbr) status loc dev/sdb6

I continued with the install and then got:

OpenSUSE Install :: GRUB Error 17 On Single Boot System 11.4

Jun 29, 2011

I have a single boot system that was working great until this morning when it locked up. I was working as I always do when the system stopped responding completely. CTRL+F1 did not work to allow me into the back so I could log in and see what was happening.

CTRL+SHIFT+SysRq did not recover the system or interrupt what ever was causing the lock up.

SSH from another system failed as the client did not respond

So I had to do a hard boot and when I did I got this:

GRUB Loading stage1.5.

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 17

Again this is a single boot system no Windows other than in VMWare inside the install. It is a multi drive with RAID set up workstation that I have at work. The short of it I am sole IT support as our companies ITS will not support Linux. In 5 years of operations with Linux at work this is my first issue, and I can't figure it out. I already tried the PartedMagic solution (ref = Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic) and that didn't work.

I re-installed the system completely even going to the extent to change my partition scheme just to make sure that wasn't the problem (which doesn't make sense as the system had been running for 46 days non-stop without a problem). Upon reboot after performing a complete security update I got the Error 17 message again.

Below is the output of fdisk -l

Code:
Welcome - Parted Magic (Linux 2.6.30.6-pmagic)

Most of the filesystem tools and partition programs featured by Parted Magic include man pages. To read a manual page, simply type man and the name of the tool. (Examples: 'man ntfsprogs' or 'man fdisk')

OpenSUSE Install :: Grub Error 18 - Unknown File System - Running From External Hard Drive

Jan 11, 2011

It started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.

Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.

I can not use disks

I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)

I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.

I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.

I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.

When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)

Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.

I've been searching for awhile and can't find any threads that can solve my problem. From other threads, however, I have noticed that I should probably include my menu.lst, listed below

Code:

I have also ran the boot info script and received the RESULTS.txt file it generates. Listed below

OpenSUSE Install :: Broken System After Install Of Kernel Sources And Restart?

May 29, 2011

I had recently installed the kernel sources so that I could compile the VirtualBox kernel module to use well but I had not restarted afterwards. I had been using my system problem free until tonight when I decided to restart. I had no internet connection and through ifconfig showing only lo and ifup eth0 returning "device eth0 is not accessible", I discovered I had a bigger problem than at first thought. Then I discovered that no PCI devices other than video were working, and so I referred to /var/log/messages and discoverd a line stating that "/lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/modules.dep : no such file or directory.

All other entries in that directory were some version of 2.6.37.1-1.2.

during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.

Ubuntu :: Karmic Fails To Restart On Dell Laptop - Only Logo Shows Briefly - Error

Jun 28, 2010

Have been running Karmic 910 for six months on a Dell Latitude D510 laptop with a Pentium M CPU, 2 GB of RAM and Intel 915 graphics, and I really like it, especially the Gnome desktop. However, a glitch occured after suspending, resuming, shutting down and trying to restart. Now after selecting Ubuntu in Grub the Ubuntu logo shows up onscreen, doesn't seem to pulsate, and eventually is replaced by an error message that the system gave up waiting for root device.

The LiveCD shows the Ubuntu partition as unrecognized, unknown or unused in Palimpsest Disk Utility, though Gparted shows it as normal ext4. The partition doesn't show up in Places. From the command prompt (via ctrl-alt-F1) I'm able to run fdisk, which shows the partitions but am unable to mount the Ubuntu sda4 partition - the error message is that the file type must be specified.

Starting recovery mode in Grub brings about 25 lines of startup messages, mostly dealing with usb devices, but a few render errors are there too. The last message before dropping to the ash shell is that a device could not be found. (ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/5cee... does not exist.) The ash commands are completely new to me, so I haven't had any luck with recovery mode.

If the problem is related to Intel graphics, I would like to try some "quirks" (software fixes for hardware problems, including Intel graphics bugs) mentioned on the ubuntu.wiki site. I'd also like to recover the data on the desktop, but so far cannot get into the file system.

Does GRUB need to be reinstalled? If so, why?

Would reinstalling without formatting anything preserve the data?

Would upgrading to Lucid help prevent the problem from occurring again?

Meanwhile the lights (caps lock, numeric and scroll) on the keyboard blink. The power light is still on and i can hear the hard disk turning.

I have to forcefully turn the power off and restart but can freeze again after random periods.I do lengthy and demanding computations and its common for the PC to run for weeks without turning it off.

OpenSUSE Install :: Commands Make System Boot To Grub Shell Instead Of Grub Menu?

Apr 17, 2010

I started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.

Code:
grub
root (hd0,3)
setup (hd0)
quit
reboot

Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.

If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.

I'm already booting with rootnoverify, and have checked the command on boot to make sure it was the right grub menu that was installed. I also couldn't find a topic with a problem like this, most were just grub not working at all after install or similar.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 And XP - File Not Found Error On Restart (Grub Rescue)

Feb 12, 2011

I have two partitions installed on my computer, Ubuntu 10.04 (part. sda2) and Windows XP (part. sda1). When I restart my computer I get this message:
error: file not found
grub rescue>

I thought this must be a grub error, so I booteda Super Grub disk (v 0.9799). Then I tried to fix grub with the Super Grub disk, but I got this message:
Error 15: File not found
Booting 'not lucky'
pause SGD has NOT succeeded
SGD has NOT succeeded

I then booted the system using an Ubuntu live CD, version 10.04.I tried to repair the sda2 Ubuntu partition. At a terminal prompt I ran [code] sudo e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sda2. This did not work. It ended with "e2fsck aborted". I could not repair the Ubuntu partition,
I tried to open the sda2 partition by running the terminal command [code] sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt. I received the following message:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

Using the ntfs-config program, I can easily mount the Windows XP partition (sda1). It mounts and I can read or write the files on the Windows XP partition. So at least Windows XP is not damaged. I downloaded and ran the boot info script, and here are the results:

Code:

General :: Having To Restart Ubuntu Several Times A Day

Aug 22, 2010

I hope someone can help me. Been using Ubuntu for over a month now (My first foray into Linux) and I love it...BUT I'm having an intermittent problem that seems to be getting worse:Ubuntu will be working fine....then I'll go to open a program (like Chromium or Thunderbird) and it won't open. If I already have Chromium open, it might become unresponsive. If I'm downloading something, it will start acting weird (Like last night- I was downloading c.600MB file and Ubuntu went into dysfunctional mode- and said it was downloading a 2006453 GB file!)

Also, when it goes into dysfunctional mode, any dialogue boxes that come up (like the shut-down confirmation box) will be blank- just pure white- with no text or buttons visible.I can't even run any terminal commands when this happens, to try and diagnose the problem, because either terminal won't open, or if it does, it will be blank like the dialogue boxes- i.e. the purple background will just be replaced by pure white, with no cursor or text).I'll then restart the computer when these things happen, and then I'll get the "The disk for /tmp is not ready yet or not present" and have to press "f: to fix it- then it will boot up and work fine- sometimes for the rest of the day...sometimes for 5 minutes.

Since I don't see anyone else complaining about such behavior, I assume the problem is with my 'puter or my installation? If anyone has any ideas, please help. I really don't want to have to switch to a different distro- as I love Ubuntu///and I don't want to have to reinstall - as I have it configured the way I want it and plus it's on a partition (Still need to keep Win-D'ohs around just for when I want to use Magicjack)This is starting to happen several times a day...HELP...can't. Go. On like this![My 'puter's specs: Compaq Presario SR2170NX P4 3.0Ghz 1G Ram 150GB HD -all I usually do these days is email and the web]

OpenSUSE Hardware :: System Instantly Crashing At Times / Solve This?

Jun 4, 2011

For the last 4-5 weeks my cpu will suddenly turn off, not shutdown, just instantly go off.

It has happened when I've been browsing and even when I have not been at the computer. I know it could be a hardware malfunction, but I started seeing some consistency in it's crashes the last two weeks.

During Skype, more and more, it would crash. And then I whenever I would upload more than 3 MP3 files to Amazon Cloud Music Player It would crash in the same way.

I downgraded off Tumblweed this morning and it seems to be working better. It has crashed once, but it completed uploading 12 tracks to Amazon, which it had not been able to before.

I'm running KDE 4.6.3 currently and Firefox 4.0.1 with Skype 2.2.0.25-suse111. I was using kernel ..39, now I'm on ..37.

I'm content to stick with the 11.4 repos and ..37 kernel. But I would love to hear if anyone else has had these issues, or a suggestion to solve this?

OpenSUSE Install :: System Boots To Grub Instead Of Kernel?

Apr 14, 2010

I installed Fedora 13 on a separate partition and it deleted all of my openSUSE entries in grub. Or the boot menu, whichever is correct. From another thread, I found these commands and tried it:

Code:

grub
root (hd0,3)
setup (hd0)
quit
reboot

hd0,3 contained one of my openSUSE installs. Everything went well and grub accepted all of these commands except quit. So I used esc and rebooted. The reboot brought up the grub shell again. I could find no way to boot anything. Then I used the 'repair installation' option from the 11.2 dvd and installed a new boot loader for /dev/sda2 which contains 11.2.

This was successful, so I went to the YaST bootloader tool and added /dev/sda3 (Milestone 5) and /dev/sda4 (Fedora) and rebooted. But these two partitions still boot into grub instead of loading the correct kernel.

OpenSUSE Install :: GRUB Error 17 On External HDD

Apr 9, 2011

I recently decided to try out openSUSE 11.4 with gnome and install it on my external USB HDD. To do so i followed this guide here SDB:Installation on external hard drive - openSUSE

Unfortunately after finishing the install when trying to boot into the system i got GRUB error 17. The only thing i did differently from the guide was placing the /boot partition after a ~800 GB NTFS partition with my data.

I tried to solve the problem by reinstalling the system with different settings than before. After completing all of the steps in the guide mentioned i disabled booting from MBR and enabled booting from /boot partition. Also set the installer to write generic boot code to MBR.

Though after the installation i realized that grub is not loading at all this time and went on to fix it by completing the steps here SDB:All about GRUB - openSUSE . After doing so i'm back to GRUB error 17.

OpenSUSE Install :: Where Is Grub Loaded On Dual-boot System

Jan 24, 2010

I am currently rebuilding a couple laptops and a desktop to dual boot Windows and Suse 11.2. Windows is installed on partition 1. On the laptops, the build goes fine and dual boot with grub is OK. No issues. But on the desktop, the exact same build (after all the on-line updates, etc) fails with "Operating system not found" on the final (and first) boot. It seems that the Suse 11.2 build is somehow resetting the active partition and the boot does not see grub or Windows. When I reset partition #1 back to "active, only Windows loads. So I guess I need to fix this by reinstalling grub. Or use the Windows boot loader.

(1) Where is grub located on my system?

(2) What partiton is the Linux master Boot record If I wanted to use the Windows boot loader and do the following command to grab the 512 bytes I need:

Ubuntu :: Restart Several Times The Bios And Boot Loader?

Jun 17, 2011

First off, i have ran 10.10 for the past 6 months without any problems. Then last week i decided to try 11.04. I installed using Wubi. Now the problem is the computer only freezes when I am using a web browser (firefox). it completely freezes where I can do nothing, so I will kill it with the power button. When i try to restart, not even the bios will boot up, just a blank screen with the num/caps lock key flashing.

But after trying to restart several times the bios and boot loader will eventually come up and will start up normally until the same thing happens. I decided to reinstall using wubi so when i tried to boot itno windows, the windows partition was corrupted. I fully restored windows and installed 11.04 with wubi again only to have the same freezing problems.

I will be trying 10.10 again and see if it just a 11.04 issue, but thought this problem should be out there if anyone else has a similar experience
