Ubuntu :: "Frequency Out Of Range" Message After GRUB?

I've been having this problem ever since I updated the kernel version and reinstalled the video drivers. It happens after grub and before I log in with my account.I know it wasn't a resolution related problem due to the fact that I had a compatible one set last time (I don't really think 1024x768 has any problems with my monitor), and the only thing left to modify is the vertical and horizontal refresh rate, and for that I tried running:
Code:sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorgas some forums/threads pointed, but it just returns a blank line and nothing happens (the threads were quite old since I couldn't find anything recent so I suppose it's outdated). So then, what do I do to reconfigure X? X.X
I've recently reinstalled a computer with 10.04 for my parents to use, and it worked fine at mine, but after transporting it to theirs and hooking it up to their existing monitor it doesn't seem to work anymore!Well, it boots and I hear it login but I don't get a splash screen and at some point between the bios and the login sound it comes up with Frequency out of Range. On the warning message it displays a frequency of "72.9 kHz / 90.2 Hz" but in the monitor settings its reporting that its operating at horizontal 64,0 kHz and vertical 60.0 Hz. I also don't get any splash screen when starting up, just a flashing _ before the monitor stops things
What I can do however is drop into a the tty console (alt+ctrl+1) and login to the shell but don't really know what things to change from there.Having googled things a bit I've found references to xorg.conf but there's no such thing on my system so I can't edit that to fix this. Likewise I also have found references to fiddling with grub to get into the recovery, but grub doesn't even appear when I boot and I don't know what to press to get it to drop into its menu...
This is really urgent as I need to go home tomorrow at the latest and I want to get my parents system working before then. I also have no spare monitors here and I didn't think to bring with me a liveCD to fiddle with things (only a UNR netbook which I'm posting this from), so the console is the only access I have to the machine.Some specs: Ubuntu 10.04. ATi Radeon 9100 IGP, no proprietary drivers are installed. The monitor is an old CRT that still works beautifully and whose replacement is not an option.
I just updated my Wubi install of 9.10 to 10.04 last night. Everything went well until it required me to reboot the computer. I rebooted, loaded Ubuntu from the startup list, and then the screen went blank and I got "H.V. frequency over range" on the monitor.
I can load the GRUB options, but recovery mode using the most recent kernel does not work. I am entirely unexperienced with using the terminal and command prompt options.
Here's what I have attempted so far:
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg this did not do anything, the command was not recognized
$sudo nano xorg.config I don't even know what to do when I get to this screen
Got a new HP Mini 210 the other day and things run pretty good using squeeze considering how new it is. The only serious problem is that the available scaling frequencies are mis-reported by the system. Instead of 800, 1.0, 1.3 and 1.6, only 1.0 and up are shown.
acpi-cpufreq is installed and run properly on boot, indeed the system scales nicely from 1.0 through max as needed / dicatated by the ondemand governor. Powertop tells me it spends 99.8% of its time at the "lowest" frequency of 1.0.
In the hopes that a newer kernel would solve things I downloaded 2.6.34-1 and built it, and though it runs very nicely it doesn't solve the problem of the missing 800Mhz frequency. At this point I'm at a bit of loss as to how to proceed. I've asked the same question on the Debian mailing list, because I want to give this the good old college try before submitting a bug report to the kernel mailing list.
I certainly do not consider myself a Debian power-user, but I do presently have 3 Lenny systems and 1 Squeeze system running fine in my home on "older" hardware. However, for the past week I have been trying to get yet another system running, and I have hit the wall. This is on a new home-built system with an AMD Athlon II X4 and an ASUS M4A785-M motherboard. The Lenny installation was done with a net install of the AMD64 variety.
I always get a "Monitor frequency out of range" error whenever I boot. I can do a CTRL ALT F1 to get to command line, but I have no success getting to GUI. I have read numerous posts of similar monitor frequency problems with various distros, and most point toward HorizSync, VertRefresh, etc settings in xorg.conf. I have played with a myriad of options there, but I still get the "frequency out of range" error after a reboot. I have swapped monitors to no avail (monitors that work on my other Debian 32-bit systems). I really don't think the problem can be the xorg.conf file, since I have tried the exact same file as on the other machines. (Also, those systems seem to be more than happy without custom HorizSync and VertRefresh options in their xorg.conf files.)
On this new computer, I am using the motherboard's integrated video output (theoretically a ATI Radeon HD5200).I don't know if special options are needed in xorg.conf for this???I am able to successfully boot to GUI with multiple differentCD Linux distros; however, no such luck with the Debian installation. I would prefer to stay with Debian if possible, but I cannot live by command line alone on this system.Please let me know if there is something else that I should try before punting and moving to another 64-bit distro.
I am having troubles with my old school monitor though.Upon boot up I can press CTRL+ALT+F1 to see a text only screen, but CTRL+ALT+F7uses my monitor to say "frequency out of range". I googled and found that I can press CTRL+ALT+"+" to change the X.org resolution. If I do this about five times I finally see a screen. However, the resolution must be too high because in order to see other parts of the screen I have to "scroll" with the mouse off the edges of the screen. Furthermore, if I go to System->Preferences->Screen Resolution, Resolution and Refresh rate are blank
I just installed the latest version of Ubuntu on an external disk (500gb) giving 12gb to Ubuntu. After the installation process finished I did reboot. When BIOS loaded instead of the Ubuntu boot screen a message from the monitor presented like this: information out of range 93.0kHz/58Hz So I suppose that there must be a monitor problem or something.
Installed CentOS 5.4 x86-64, installation is fine. First bootup after install always fails (after a few messages are displayed) with my monitor showing an "out of range" message.I know exactly what to fix (sync values in xorg.conf) and what values to enter there, but what I can't figure out is, how to get to a stupid prompt! Or a smart one for that matter.Also, I do get a message (before the "out of range" message) from CentOS, telling me to "press I for interactive startup" - but all that does is print as many "I" on the screen as I press. And did they really mean "I" and not "i" for this?
I hear great things about CentOS and if you can help with this silly question - How to get to a prompt - as easy as it probably is for you all, it would help me a lot.
my motherboard died Friday, and I replaced it with a brand new ASUS board that has an Intel 4500 Graphics chipset. Now, when I boot; all I see on my monitor is it's "out of range" message. I can ssh to the box just fine; but I'd really like to get X back up and running. Is there an easy way to force ubuntu to regenerate all of the necessary config files.
I want to plot a set of data in only one plot.The problem is that some points of the data should be better plotted in a linear scale (lets say 0 to 100,000) but there are other data points that, exceding the value 100,000, would be better plotted in a logarithmic scale, as they goes in the range 100,000 to 500,000,000. Let's say the data is:

Is there a way to plot all these points in the same plot in only one X-axis showing two different ranges in that axis: linear: 0-100,000 logarithmic: 100,000 - 1,000,000,000?The axis would be read, for example, as:
Ubuntu 10.04 was in small slave-disk, and I put other bigger disk same type IDE/ATA.In first start I get message: "no such device....., grub rescue."Anyway, I make installation in this disk and and now after start message is: "error: out of disk, grub rescue.So now I can not use master/XP and no slave/Ubuntu.
I want to build a bash script, which can ping a range IP adresses which will be filled in by the admin. If there is no IP-adress filled in, then the script must ping the subnet where the system is logged on. So if my ip is 192.168.1.6, then the script must ping from 192.168.1.1 till 192.168.1.255 Or else, if there is given a beginning and ending ip it must ping that!
The first part of the bash script is to ping a given range (see below). But there is one problem, how can I tell the script to ping from $begin till $end, [..] is of course wrong! But what must be filled in there???

The second part is to find my own ip and ping the whole range.. How to do that? I only can find my own IP, but I cant ping the whole range,, how to do that?
I had a successful dual boot with win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. I just moved computers from a dell XPS with a P4 to a Xeon. I switched the hard drives between the machines. As I expected GRUB somehow imploded on the idea and now only displays a cruel "No such disk" message. Anyways, I was hoping to tap into someones vast knowledge of grub and re-configure it. It would make my day. I am also using a LiveCD so any commands I would use must be able to work on a LiveCD fdisk -l

I am not able to log to my system as i am getting a strange message at GRUB screen even different kernels are not getting loaded. The entire thing i get is as follows: GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4 [Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported.For the first word,TAB lists possible command completions.Anywhere else TAB lists possible device/file completions.
I use ubuntu 10.10. Everything was great until i formatted my C drive which had win xp. Now at startup an error message occurs instead of booting ubuntu (BOOTMGR is missing. Press Cntrl+alt+delete to restart). I searched a little bit and found that may be I need to install GRUB (boot loader). how do i install grub? using "fdisk -l" .. I found out that my bootable partition is C drive (NTFS /dev/sda1) while ubuntu is installed on another partition (ext3 /dev/sda3)!
i have a problem... after using gparted... to delete my ntfs part, and increase my linux partition, moving (by copying or deletin) SWAP and one other partition, used for system..i ended up having this message displayed on restartPHP Code:Error: file not foud.grub rescue> i will post ASAP a print screen of gparted maybe you can help me in sorting this outI would like NOT to reinstall ubuntu, but to find a sollution to this problem
I have just installed Lucid Lynx as after a live run of it I thought it was about time to upgrade. Everything ran smoothly in the live version so I backed up my files and installed it. When I went to boot I get this - Grub loading, please wait ... Error 2
The strange thing is it seems to be specific to the computer. I have an older, lower spaced desktop, computer that I tried the hard drive in and it worked fine. Problem is its too low spaced for what I want so it seems the install went ok but its something with the computer? How I would be able to boot into the install?
I am fairly new to linux and my laptop froze so I rebooted it and now I have this error. I have tried to load the files needed using the prompt but nothing seems to work so here is my bootinfoscript thing. Any way for me to reinstall ubuntu over the sda5 partition but keep my files?

I have an old computer that I use for trying out software and other things before putting them on my newer machine so as to avoid irreparable damage. The machine has 2 hard discs; the first disc contains Windows and I wanted to use the second disc for Linux. I installed Fedora 14 on the second disc and followed this with Ubuntu 10.10.
After I installed Fedora I re-booted and had a choice between booting into Windows or Fedora. After adding Ubuntu I assumed that Grub2 would pick up both Windows and Fedora and add them to the grub menu but instead, the grub menu only contained the options to boot Fedora or Ubuntu. I tried running 'sudo update-grub' but got the following message:
"cannot access /var/lib/os-prober/mount/boot Boot: No such file or directory"
When I had a look in /os-prober all that was there was a file called 'labels' and when I opened it it consisted of the one line "Fedora 1" It looks to me, who doesn't know a lot about grub2, that something is missing from grub and had wondered whether to re-install it or whether doing so would be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.
I was trying to install ubuntu 9.10 as a dual boot system with windows and I recieved this error message: The Grub package failed to install into /target/. Without the Grub boot loader, the installed system will not boot
This Error comes up after 94% of the install. I also cannot seem to get the side by side install option to work (sometimes this option appears sometimes it does not) I am not sure but I beleive seome of the install files have been placed on the hard drive because I only get the option now to install on the hard drive and totally wipe clean or the emptiest hard drive. So how would I get the possible Ubuntu install off the Hard drive. I have used this CD to Install before it has no scratches therefore should work. Also If I have Win Xp on a Raid 0 will the Ubuntu 9.10 install ?
Today, I finished assembling my dream computer. I can boot it into the BIOS, and I checked that everything was working correctly through there. Anyway, I attempted to transfer the hard drive from this computer to that one. This computer is a Dell (blech) Optiplex GX280 with an Intel processor and integrated graphics. The new one has an AMD Phenom II processor with an ATI card and an ASRock motherboard (drastically different machines, I know...) When I try to boot, GRUB gives me an error message that says something like:
Code: blah whatever cannot find /dev/disk/by-uuid/372de761-9577-48be-ba19-c6b2890cb229 Did I do something wrong installing the hard drive? Or is this a problem that is going to happen no matter how hard I try to make it not happen? If the second is true, will it help if I wipe the disk and reinstall Ubuntu on the new computer?
P.S. I know similar threads about transferring hard disks have been posted, but no thread has mentioned this error.
I've installed Ubuntu desktop edition 10.04 so far, using alcohol tool as I wanted to install "inside Windows".I successfully installed it everything seems to be fine to me. But, the problem is when I select Ubuntu from boot menu it stops at a console with some grub loader message and doesn't shows login screen.
Please, not that I had installed it a couple of time before and it worked perfectly for some reason and Windows problem I had to uninstall it.
I can also post pictures of that screen if you require, I've to capture it through my mobile phone, which is with suck graphics.

What do I do to boot my system? Previously I was able to select from the grub menu. But not in this case. Any suggestions. I have an XP system as well on the same hard drive. I used wubi to install Ubuntu 9.10.
It happened when I updated my php5.4 to 5.5 version on my small Debian 7 server. I am only getting GRUB right after BIOS boot pass, then none of the keys working even C or Shift buttons to go to command promt except CTRL+ALT+DEL.
I have tried rescue mode with live CD, selected myserver/root/ partition to install GRUB but not worked.
How to recover my server, I have some important data in it and I don`t want to destroy them.
Just delete a linux partition and now when i boot a message appears and says error: unknown filesystem grub rescue >
I have search on the net for this problem and i have understand it a little. But my situation is a bit different and because i don't want to format my hard disc i wanna try to fix it. So before a couple months i download ubuntu 9.10 and i installed it a month later. But my computer used to crash all the time and i couldnt use it. So i download the latest ubuntu 10.4 and install it while having windows xp and the old ubuntu 9.10(so i had windows xp, ubuntu 9.10 and ubuntu 10.4 partitions). Now i tried to delete the partition of ubuntu 9.10 from disc utility. so i have the message i wrote above when i boot. I dont wanna delete my windows xp and ubuntu 10.4. what should i do to stop this message from appearing.
I'm currently trying to get to the root of an problem on startup; unfortunatly when booting after the first couple of messages when booting without quiet and with nosplash in the grub menu I still end up with the nice blue background and the slowly filling bubble... I'd like to go back to the old, boring, messy, but much loved and now much missed (least by me) text boot screen where I can see wtf my system is doing and where its hanging during the boot process.
(I know the cause of the hang now but still want to go back to the old fashioned noisy boot environment - not a fan of the windows style silent boot... I like to know what's going on and that my PC hasn't decided to join the French and go on strike, though wouldn't blame my poor netbook if it has, hammering the bleeper doing random number analysis - not something an atom 270 is designed for)
