View 6 RepliesMy husband has been using Ubuntu just about forever now. He just upgraded to the newest version but has been having problems. He tried to do a regular upgrade and after it installed his screen had wallpaper and that's it. No icons or task bar or anything. He decided to do a clean install to see if that would help, and it's still that way.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Natty in a VirtualBox VM (running in XP), and all I see is an empty Desktop with background. No Launcher or anything else to run anything.
It is obviously running, because I can right click on the desktop, create a folder and navigate round. If I navigate to an application I can run it.
Rebooting to Classic works (if maybe a little slower than 10.10).
I wanted to try Unity, and assume it is trying to run.
Ubuntu 10.04, gnome, nvidia 7000 series card. Recent kernel and nvidia updates caused this situation. I boot to a login selector, like normal. When I login I get my bootup sound and background, but no panels. Right clicking does nothing. I booted up a puppylinux cd, deleted xorg.conf, and can now get to a working desktop. I have, through the additional drivers utility, deleted and reinstalled nvidia current driver. Twice. No change. Windows XP (On another hard drive) works well, so it's not a card problem.

All gone.Recovery loads fine but with the 10.XX version look. What happened and how do I undo it?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI mount /home on a logical partition. Files and directories that I trash from here go nicely into the recycle bin, and I can right click on it and choose "Empty Trash" with no problem. Files off of the root directory in directories that I "own" (i.e. /mydir/*) do not play as nicely. I went ahead and followed instructions from another post, namely:
Code:
sudo mkdir /.Trash
sudo chmod 1777 /.Trash
And after trashing some files from /mydir, there is indeed a subdirectory with my uid (1000) and files that I trash from /mydir are going in there. However, the recycle bin on my desktop remains empty, and the only method I have for deleting said files is by deleting them from the /.Trash/1000 folders through the command line. So my question is: Is there anyway that I can trash files from /mydir, see them appear on the desktop recycle bin, and empty the trash without the need to rm them directly through the command line? Not sure if it will help, but here is my fstab:
Code:
# / was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=4129f389-92be-459e-8bbc-928c1440f718 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /home was on /dev/sda6 during installation

# swap was on /dev/sda5 during installation

For a month or so now, I have been enabling ssh and opening port 22. I cron'ed the start and stop commands to leave them open only a few hours a day. After a bit, I checked my logs to find that some IP or another was attempting to brute force my root account.
I took little real threat by the offense.
(1) my system does not allow root to login and
(2) it would cut them off sooner than later when my system issued the stop command.
fast forward
Today I log in to find that all of my log files, as viewed from the gnome log file viewer, were empty of entries from about noon yesterday and prior.
Though I haven't noticed anything at all out of the ordinary with my system, I would like to get more opinions on the matter. Would there be any conceivable way that this was an automatic system routine, a clean up action of something? Additionally, if I was indeed the victim of a hack, what can I do to further protect my system (keeping in mind that I do want to access my system via ssh from time to time)?
I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 and all was working ok till today. I am not sure if it was because of a new update(manager)or maybe another reason, but i get a purple screen and a unresponsive window from a alarm clock app and thats it. This occures when I login onto Classic Ubuntu and Safe mode, the main Ubuntu (Unity) is working fine.
I did use Ubuntu Classic since install and was running fine. Now the screen is purple and cant even shut of the PC with the powerbutton. I can still get into terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1 and that about it... I had Dock installed, task bar... all is gone, even the background picture changed.
I would like to setup fedora for fullscreen, touchscreen, noexit application. So whenever you'll boot or restart the application will automatically starts. I thing there are these step required:
1. autologin
2. start fvwm after login instead of default DM - gnome
3. run application
how to autologin in fedora but it still shows that fedora gui login screen for 10 seconds and then it logs in. My problem that I dont know how to start fvwm and configure it to empty desktop (no toolbars no nothing) instead of gnome.
Have recently tried to start ubuntu with kubuntu-desktop, but as I reboot my computer kubuntu only shows the terminal after the login and I cant get my desktop back.

any ideas where I might find some error messages telling me what's going on?
this seemed to happen when I was running "blender" and making the machine do some heavy number crunching, it actually locked up.
I have set up a server running ubuntu desktop, and I'm able to logon through remote desktop (win 7). The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. Is there some setting I have missed to be able to see the same from any computer (logon through remote desktop).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have this nasty habit of refreshing desktop in a quick succession by right-clicking and selecting 'Refresh',on my XP system at office.(And,iam sure most of us do the same). With Ubuntu,if a right-click on desktop slowly and select 'align by...',it simulates the XP refresh action as explained above. But,if i perform the same action rapidly,it takes this first option from right-click context menu, which is 'Create Folder',and results in an empty folder being created on desktop.I tried double right-clicking and again it created an empty folder. Is there any workaround to handle this.I mean:Can the right-click context menu items be shuffled so that the 'Create Folder' option is moved from 1st place

I just ran memtest86 on my pc to check for any bad ram for a problem i was having and when i restarted ubuntu after the splash screen loads i just have two panels (top and bottom) and they flash rapidly. i can't seem to do anything except ctrl alt del and restart.
i kept trying to press esc to enter safe mode but it keeps bringing me to the splash screen and ubuntu loads up.
i'm currently using a knoppix cd to type this msg.
I just restarted my computer, tried to login and all i see is the blue Kubuntu wallpaper, the desktop items never load, i can run terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+f2 however? This happened before and i just reinstalled the kde, but i really need to find out why this keeps happening.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been running 10.04 since the launch after upgrading from 9.10. Today when I logged in as normal, instead of taking me to the desktop I get a white console on the top left corner with the normal login background. I typed 'sudo X' but it says the server is already active for display 0. Please advise what I can do. I am reasonablyew to Linux so apologies if this has been discussed before (but I couldn't find any info here or on google).

I'm new to Ubuntu, so new that in fact that this is my first install of the Operating System. I'm currently using Ubuntu 11.04. At login screen, the bottom bar is present, but after I log in it disappears and all I'm left with is just the mouse cursor and the desktop background. This happens for both the Ubuntu and Ubuntu Classic choices. But both top and bottom bars are present when I choose the Ubuntu Classic (No Effects) and Ubuntu (Safe Mode) options. Is there a reason that this keeps happening? A bad install? Hardware can't support the new version of Ubuntu?
View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently, updated to 11.04. Yesterday I booted the system and found that after I login my Desktop does not come up.. The mouse indicator just continues to spins. I have observed if I wait about 5 minutes my screen saver will kick in. My setting is for 5 minutes. Once I cancel the screen saver Iḿ back to the mouse indicator circling continuously. At that point all I am able to do is restart and try again. None of the keyboard shortcuts seem to work when that situation exist.I am running a Compaq Presario Dual boot2 GiB of RamAMD Athlon XP 2000+
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed iFolder server on my 9.0.4 desktop computer.
I cannot login as a user using a web interface or client. Using the correct password, it takes a long time, then tells me that the login may be incorrect. With an incorrect password, it tells me this immediately.
I am able to login to the web admin interface, but the "System" tab will generate the following error after several minutes. code...
Just recently I noticed that I suddenly couldn't open any folders, just getting a message in my bar saying it was opening the folder, then it'd immediately close. I also could not right click on my desktop. I removed and then reinstalled Nautilus, then reboot, but now my problem has worsened.
I can no longer select a session type at the login screen, and after logging in I just get a small terminal window in the top left of my screen while the rest is the background for the gnome login screen.
I am using Ubuntu 9.10, and is the only OS installed on my system. Yesterday, my desktop stopped working - no right-click function / display of icons. My wallpaper was still intact. The last thing I did was pressed ALT + F2 and executed "gksudo nautilus". This fixed my desktop for the time being, but wasn't showing the correct icons/wallpaper.The real problem started when I restarted. I get the normal login screen, and when I enter my info, it just restarts back to the login screen. I know I am entering the correct information, my caps lock isn't on etc. If I enter my password incorrectly it doesn't reload, it just acts normal and says the pw was wrong. Only when I enter my info correctly does it go to a black screen really quick, then come back to the boot screen.
I am at work right now, but will be checking this thread again later tonight. Please help, I am locked out of my computer which I desperately need to log in to!
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 TLS from a pen-drive (running Ubuntu example). I created a new user account. When I lock desktop it correctly turnout the screen (everything go dark). When I move the mouse Ubuntu returns perfectly. My problem is that in any time I am not asked for password. I want that Ubuntu while locking ask for password to login again. I already tried configuring lock down and lock properties (application) via gconf-editor.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I load up my computer, Ubuntu comes up with a command line asking for my user name and password. I can type all that in, and get into the system, but it's still in the command line. If I type startx, it will then load the GUI desktop just fine. Is there any particular reason it wont' boot straight into a GUI login screen?
I originally had Ubuntu dual booted with Windows 7, and was having this problem. When I installed Ubuntu fresh on an external hdd, the issue went away. However, I recently formatted the hdd and re-installed Ubuntu and now it's doing this again.
My ubuntu 10.10 desktop environment freezes at right after login, with the window prompt to "unlock keyring" in the foreground. The cursor still can be moved around the screen with the touchpad or mouse. Mouseover of Docky elicits the usual animation but there is no response to clicking it. There is no other response elicited from moving the mouse over or clicking anything else on the screen, including the taskbar and the hot corners i have set up. However the screen still goes dim and to sleep when left unattended and can be reawoken. The netbook also still recognises when it is plugged into a power source.
Background info: I have been dual booting windows 7 starter and ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition for about 2 months now on my ASUS eeepc1005pe netbook with no issues till now. The problem only started when i booted up into windows 7 starter without having shut down ubuntu completely. My netbook was hibernating when i mistakenly chose to boot into win 7 starter at the bootloader. Now this freeze happens every single time i try to boot into ubuntu. But i am still able to boot into win 7 starter without any problems.
The same sequence of events occurs each time i try to start ubuntu. The boot goes fine, then the automatic login occurs, then compiz loads fine then my desktop environment appears with all the same windows and programs open on the desktop as the last time i had managed to use ubuntu except that the keyring login prompt appears in the foreground and then everything freezes as i have described.
I have my work PC in the office, and time to time I access it via TeamViewer from home. I have access to it also via ssh, over the VPN connection. I have problems with this setup, when for some reason the work PC must be rebooted (or it just happened by itself - power failure). The Ubuntu gets to the login screen and that's it. I can not access it remotely because the TeamViewer application is not started on that PC yet. I'd like to know, if there is a way how I can access my work PC over the VPN connection - open SSH session, and write some commands, to log in that desktop environment user, and launch the TeamViewer application. Ie, if someone would be looking on the screen at that moment, she would see that login screen disappears, desktop environment is loaded, and the TeamViewer app is started.
If that's not possible, then, I guess, I'll have resort to some alternative remote access tool (ie, VNC) what could be loaded before the Ubuntu login screen is shown. Then I could access it over the VPN connection, using appropriate client.
