Ubuntu :: Firestarter: Switching From Wire To Wifi?

Jun 11, 2011

Ubuntu 10.10 Firestarter 1.0.3

My Desktop gets moved around a lot, meaning, I switch between Wire and Wifi often. I have been re-running the Firestarter wizard (when I remember to do so) each time I change from one mode of communication to another.

However, in Firestarter, on the STATUS page I can see both my wired connection and my wifi connection along with transfer data stats, despite which kind of Internet connection I have told Firestarter my computer is using.

Does this mean Firestater is actually protecting both routes and that I don't need to rerun the wizard to customize Firestarter for protecting the newest mode of communication I am using between these two different choices of Internet contact?

Ubuntu :: File Not Opening Have To Do With Switching Wifi Connections?

Aug 7, 2011

I saved the file when I was at my hotel as a .doc file, and it had 7 or 8 pages written. I forget the file size. I'm here at the airport now, and as I load this file up to work on it, it says it's 0 bytes. What the hell happened? I'm freaking out because I *need* those notes to write my paper. I didn't really make a dent but it was still a good amount of progress! Does the file not opening have to do with switching wifi connections?

Ubuntu :: Firestarter Removal - Error "zooming Up The Screen Containing Firestarter In It"

Feb 5, 2010

I installed firestarter and then at a later date uninstalled/purged it, both actions via synaptic. I have a very verbose boot, I like to see what's going on, and noticed after the uninstall/purge that I was getting an error zooming up the screen containing firestarter in it. After many restarts I found that a file was left in /etc/network/if-up.d/50firestarter and this file was simply a script trying to restart firestarter. At this point I've commented out the calling line and followed the commented line with exit 0. This removes the error but there's still a link calling the file so, is this a bug or am I missing something? It appears the uninstall/purge wasn't entirely complete.

Ubuntu :: No Wireless Or Hard Wire Internet Connection On Dell 14R?

i just installed the newest version of Ubuntu on my Dell 14r(1440) laptop. It's the newest version of the laptop with the i3. I can't find any wireless networks and my laptop doesn't even recognize when i plug in a Ethernet cable from my router. There are no internet connections available when hard wired or wireless.

I have the hated Dell Wireless DW1501, 802.11 g/n 1x1 Half Mini network card, which is only compatible with Windows operating systems from what i can tell. I want to be able to connect to the internet both ways, but especially and more importantly using a Ethernet cable.

Software :: OpenSUSE11.4 - Wire/wireless Icon In Tray?

Apr 10, 2011

I know that the wireless devices are working properly as other OSs on this HD work in various forms both .deb and .rpm. In setting up openSUSE11.4, no matter which wireless device in WPA is installed, the icon will go to the wired icon, not the wireless. You can see it trying to go to a wireless icon, but then it reverts to the wired one. I'm beginning to think that this a OS problem in itself and not an install problem.

Debian Configuration :: Slow Boot Waiting For DHCP On Wire?

Mar 23, 2011

Up until very recently I've had a wired network, and at boot I'd see messages about DHCPREQUEST and DHCPOFFER and stuff as it set up the wired network.

Now I've just got wireless working instead, but it still tries to use DHCP on the no-longer-existing wired network. So it says "DHCPDISCOVER on eth0..." and waits for a bit, then again and waits again, and all the time the boot is waiting for a reply to its DHCP requests and it's not going to get one. It doesn't seem to do any harm, because once it's given up and proceeded with the boot then the wireless does seem to work fine, but I'd like to speed up the boot a little by cutting out this needless waiting. Has anyone got an idea how I can stop it? I tried in Preferences-Network connections and in Administration-Network, and in System Tools-Network tools, and also from the network icon in the task bar, but I can't find anything which lets me configure the wired network eth0 or disable it or disable the DHCP.

Ubuntu Networking :: Use Laptop As "wireless To Wire" Network Converter?

Jan 19, 2011

The problem is that I'm too lazy to buy a wireless network card for my stationary computer that I'm going to use on my room with no wired network. So I'm looking for how to use my laptop with Ubuntu 10.10 as a wireless to wired network converter, sorta. I know how to use a laptop as a "wire to wireless" network converter, but in my case, I need the opposite. I think I'll need a crossed network cable between my ubuntu laptop and my stationary computer (that's the one I'm aiming to get internet onto), but I don't have a crossed one, can I use a switch instead?
