Firestarter sometimes shows up to a dozen different ip connections for a single webpage that I open. This is for the first webpage I open, not after I have been browsing for awhile so they are not old connections that have not timed out. This just doesn't seem normal to me since other installs I have had of ubuntu have only shown one or two firefox connections at all times.
View 1 RepliesI've noticed that when I open firefox I get really strange HTTP and HTTPS connections showing up in firestarter (which as I understand it is just a GUI for IPtables). They connect to various bits of a site listed as 1e100.net (when you use "lookup hostnames") such as wy-in-f18.1e100.net, they stay connected all the time as far as I can see unless I close firefox. I've heard people say they are connected to Google, but I can close all tabs after loging out of google and still see them... it's very odd.

Inbound is normally blocked as standard i have also see that someone with port 1234 and 12345 have trying to attempt mine system but failed all trojan ports are fully blocked.

I have noticed several times that after closing all web apps (Firefox, Thunderbird) that some entries remain under the heading "Active connections" on the Firestarter "Status" tab. Often these show no source program. Currently I have 2 showing which show Firefox as the source. These persist after Firefox is shut down. I have verified that no Firfox process is running. And both of the IPs point to google.I have Disconnected eht0 and they still show. I have logged out and back in and they still show. I must reboot the machine to make these entries go away. Which makes me think perhaps this is a bug in Firestarter(?) Is there another way I can identify truly active connections?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy firestarter is denying connections on ports 80 and 443, despite the fact that I have set rules to allow both the services, and indeed any connection from my gateway (the source of the connections).
Can someone please advise why this might be?I can surf the 'net fine, unfortunately I cannot load facebook, gmail, or another couple of sites that require logins, and I assume this is due to HTTPS not communicating properly.(On the off chance anyone can answer these real quick, I'm also trying to solve my resolution resetting every time I restart, and one of the icons in my KDE panel turning into a widget from an icon every time I restart. Still working on these, but just if anyone knows already).
I installed firestarter and then at a later date uninstalled/purged it, both actions via synaptic. I have a very verbose boot, I like to see what's going on, and noticed after the uninstall/purge that I was getting an error zooming up the screen containing firestarter in it. After many restarts I found that a file was left in /etc/network/if-up.d/50firestarter and this file was simply a script trying to restart firestarter. At this point I've commented out the calling line and followed the commented line with exit 0. This removes the error but there's still a link calling the file so, is this a bug or am I missing something? It appears the uninstall/purge wasn't entirely complete.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI use Fedora 14 and Firefox as my web browser. I use Astrill VPN service. I have the following persistent problem: I start my computer. Astrill is not set to start on boot. I start Firefox. Firefox can not connect to anything, it says 'proxy server refusing connections'. I go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Network>Settings I click the radio button 'no proxy'. The problem remains. I am completely unable to connect to the net. Even on reboot, I cannot connect. On reboot, Firefox is set to use a proxy, although it was not on shutdown. Some init script is setting this. My normal connection is often faster than through Astrill, so I only really need to use it when I want to get at a website that is blocked by the govt here in China.
where Firefox is being told to use a proxy, and how to reset it to not use a proxy, assuming Astrill is not active. There must be something left in a .conf file somewhere which is overriding the settings in Edit>Preferences. Because, if I set it now to 'no proxy', I cannot connect to the net.
Is it fair to say that connLimit and hashlimit are very similiar on Linux i.e. while hashlimit caters to limits for groups of ports, they both set the connection rate limit per host? How in IPTables, do I configure a policy that limits connections on a port that encapsulates the total sum of all connections from all hosts? i.e. I do not want to allow more than 6000conn/minute for port range that is the sum of all connecting hosts?

Now I can not set because the network connection to the Internet Connection is inactive. I mention that before the update was functional internet connection.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI allowed ports 3689 and 5353 for incoming and outgoing traffic in firestarter but my other machines wont detect a DAAP share. They do see them when I turn off firestarter. I'm even more confused when I see that I have a local connection using port 56690 when I turn off firestarter and monitor the log. It seems that DAAP is using 56690 but when I allow it for incoming/outgoing it still doesnt pick up my DAAP shares.
Is there a way I could fix this? I mean, I could run without a firewall but...idk if thats such a good idea :/
im having a bit of a problem with Firestarter, i have Transmission opened and i am downloading a movie but when i check Firestarter i see hundreds and hundreds of Ip's that are blocked, and like 10ip's every second that get blocked.

So I had my desktop connecting via wireless to my home network. And I had firestarter helping with the firewall, and it was running using the wlan0
But now I have connected that machine by ethernet to the internet and I have taken out the wireless card. So there is no more wlan0 connection.
But now firestarter doesn't recognize my eth0 connection. How do I fix this. Should I just uninstall and reinstall firestarter? I feel that there should be a way to configure it to realize the firewall should be on eth0 now instead of wlan0.
I am new to Ubuntu and till now I have chosen it to be my favorite distro. I use my laptop in various networks, home, work, school. When I run firestarter the wizard does not give me the option for wireless INTERNET, only ethernet.

All I want to do is share my internet connection that comes through the eth0 cable to my wlan0 wiki card. Firestarter seems the convenient tool for doing this. BUT it keeps telling me wlan0 not ready. The card is connected correctly and network-manager does see incoming signals.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the XRDP server on my desktop edition of Ubuntu v10.04 following the simple instructions available here. I did this on two computers. One computer has Firestarter installed while the other does not.
When I use Windows to connect to the Ubuntu box without Firestarter, everything works just fine. However, when I try to connect to the one running Firestarter, I get a pop up showing an error message (see the attached file).
I checked the incoming rules in Firestarter and I don't see a way to add RDP sessions to the list of exceptions. I also tried adding my IP address in the host section but this too didn't help the situation.
what files does firestarter change? I would like to know so I can look at the files so I can learn to do the same thing without firestarter.

My Desktop gets moved around a lot, meaning, I switch between Wire and Wifi often. I have been re-running the Firestarter wizard (when I remember to do so) each time I change from one mode of communication to another.
However, in Firestarter, on the STATUS page I can see both my wired connection and my wifi connection along with transfer data stats, despite which kind of Internet connection I have told Firestarter my computer is using.
Does this mean Firestater is actually protecting both routes and that I don't need to rerun the wizard to customize Firestarter for protecting the newest mode of communication I am using between these two different choices of Internet contact?
At my home I am using firestarter to connect my XBOX 360 to the internet and it works perfectly, never crashes etc and I get a moderate NAT which I've never experienced any problems in having.
I have my devices set up like this
eth0 - ifconfig eth0 192.168.2.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.2.255
XBOX - 192.168.2.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.255 gateway 192.168.2.1
This configuration works perfectly on my router at my house which has the IP of 192.168.0.1
However at my friends house he has a router with the IP adress of 192.168.2.10 or 192.168.2.7*, I don't remember exactly but I'll find out tonight. I have tried changing my IP settings on my xbox and eth0 to no avail. I noticed instantly that the XBOX IP is the same as my friends router. what the new settings would be, or simply changing the router's IP.
However there is also an issue with the DNS servers. I can't find them anywhere on the router or on the router box itself. I heard that I could point it towards my default gateway however.
FTP Server OS: Ubuntu x64 9.10 Client OS: Ubuntu x64 9.10 I have an FTP server on my home network. FTP Server: VSFTPD with TLS My FTP server is running with iptables configured using firestarter. Firestarter Inbound Traffic Policy "allow Service / Port contains the FTP service with the appropriate port range, vsftpd.conf port range is identical, as is the port range on my router.
My Client system, only after reboot or system power on, absolutely will not connect to the FTP server unless the firewall is disabled then re-enabled by way of firestarter then re-enabled. Only then will my client successfully connect and continue to connect until my client reboots or powers on. At which point I need to disable/re-enable iptables through firestarter.
Others can connect to my FTP server, but they use a mixture of Mac and Windows with default firewall settings. Has anyone experienced this with firestarter and ubuntu 9.10? I never had this problem using Ubuntu 9.04.
