My sons Ubuntu installation on his computer hasn't showed the Network Connections Icon in the Panel for a long time. This weekend everything was working fine and we needed to go away for the weekend and unhooked the router. When we came back the computer wouldn't connect back up to the internet.
How can I fix the Wired Connections Icon on the Panel and get the Auto Connect to work again?

I just installed Fedora Core on my Dell Inpsiron B130 laptop and I am having trouble connecting to the internet both wirelessly and with an ethernet cord into the router. When trying to configure my network, I dont recognize any of the ethernet adapters in the drop down list. I have been told that my wireless card is Linux compatible (dell y8029 dell wireless 1370 802.11/a/b/g mini pci). My ethernet card is a B130 Broadcom Ethernet Driver which isnt in the drop down menu either.
I read that I need to download an ndiswrapper but I dont know where to find this download AND even if I could download it to a zipdribe, I have trouble opening a USB flash in Linux becuase its not a "valid block device". This is after the command "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbflash"
is a way to get a HP Deskjet F2420 all in one printer to start working when connected to a USB port in wireless router ASUS WL-500gP V2? The hardware store guy said it will work, I believed him but cannot figure out what to do to really make it functional. Shall I return the thing...?

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen fedora initially starts up, the network manager shows all the available wireless connections available to me. However, when I select my wireless connection, it will go through the loading process where it shows the two green dots and the circular moving blue streak, then it prompts me to put in the wpa password.
This is where the trouble starts...when i input my wpa password, it will proceed to attempt to connect to my network but it never succeeds in doing so--it will keep on asking me to input my wpa password. when i finally get sick of doing it over and over again, i just hit cancel instead of retrying to connect.
After i stop trying to connect, the network manager no longer shows all the available wireless networks--the list is completely empty, and i can find no way to get the list to show up again, with the exception of restarting my computer.
I am able to connect to the internet with a wired ethernet, but id like my wireless to work.
My 11.3 keeps dropping the network connection. After a few minutes of websurfing, it decides to quit connecting to the router. The windows machine behind the same router keeps working properly. I disabled IPv6 and rebooted, but still doing same the thing. The router is the DHCP server. I have tested the CAT5e wire, and it works fine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had my PC connected to my router since I installed Ubuntu. My router has the address and name password for my ISP. I'd like to plug my PC directly into my ISP line, but the network manager won't find the connection, and I don't know how to tell my PC my ISP's address and the name and password to logon with. I set up my router, and I know how to make the connection in XP, but I don't know how to in Linux. I have very limited Terminal experience.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a computer running Ubuntu, and a MacBook Pro. I need to buy a decently cheap wireless router that I can hook up to my Ubuntu so that it will send wifi signals and I can use the wifi to go online with my MacBook Pro. I was about to get one today, but remembered how Ubuntu is picky about working with things like that. I'm only going to be using it to get signals around the house which isn't that big at all.
So what would be the cheapest and decently efficient wireless routers that I can use which Ubuntu will cooperate with?
I downloaded wubi, installed ubuntu, and booted it up. Everything went smooth, it finished installing with no problems. It restarts again and I login. Firefox opens.....server not found.
That brings you to where I am now. It says that eth0 is connect. I manually changed the ip address, the netmask and gateway. Still I have no luck.
route reads as follows:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.1.1 * 255.255.255.255

When I start Ubuntu at work it automatically connects to the router every time. At home the router signal is quite weak but manually connecting via NetworkManager Applet 0.8 was successful for a week or so. In the past week, however, although the router appears in the list in Network Manager, it has stopped working and is unable to connect. Nothing has changed with the router or hardware in that time.
This is a new laptop which had Windows 7 pre-installed. Windows 7 connects to the home router successfully every time. I really don't want to use Windows 7 but until I can get this fixed I have no choice.
I don't know if it's relevant, but once I tried deleting the AUTO Home connection from Network Manager and was then able to connect on the next attempt, but this has not worked since.
Is it possible to connect to a router via a standard phone cord?

I have a netgear DG834G router. It's IP address on my local network is 192.168.0.1 and connected to the adsl line. The router is set up to act as an dhcp server too. On the router I have reserved ip address for the nics per their mac addresses.
My server is on a dual boot desktop. The other boot is XP and works fine, picks up dhcp.
I don't know how to connect Centos to the router.
I have tried to play with the network manager but to no avail.
I can ping localhost, interface eth0 is there, but i can't ping to the router.
I have set the manager system/administration/network to get dhcp automatically.
I can't activate the eth0 although the hardware device says it is OK.
I've looked at firewall and iptalbes.
I've downloaded lime-wire 5.5.8 for ubuntu Linux but it won't start-up.

Belkin Wireless G router.
Has been working fine. Today it is not. I have done nothing to it. It just keeps saying "Looking up *********" and "Cannot connect to server".
I hard wired the pc to the modem and it works fine. Hard wired the pc to the router it works fine. Running wireless, both of my computers are not connecting.
If I remember, one of the lights on the router should be lit solid, just as it is on the modem. However, all lights are blinking. The only solid light is "power".
Ubuntu 10.10 connects to a DSL modem without any problems - I mean I just plugged it in and it worked - GREAT I bought a wireless router so I could connect my netbook and now my Ubuntu machine which is simply using a cable from the wireless router now DOES NOT connect. I tried a windows machine on the wired connection from the wireless router and it connects without a problem. OF course if I remove the wireless router from the chain, i.e. simply connect directly to the modem it works straight away.

1. Need to connect 2 CCTV DVRs and view from remote. 2. Can get a static IP address. But I dont know if this is a secure way since any once can view if the know the ip address. 3. Question is : is it possible to connect the DVR( s) to a linux server which will get user name and password before letting us view the DVR. Currently there is one set as follows: 1. From location X a device is connected to location Y using leased line and static IP (12 kms distance). In location Y a router is placed and port forwarding is configured. From Location Z using internet and remote desktop concept the device at location X is viewed and data captured. Is it possible to use a similar concept but with some sort of security authentication procedure in place.

I am having some bizarre problems with a 10.10 install which I am hoping someone here can give me a little input on. Some background info: I have a laptop which I had originally put 10.10 on about 4 weeks ago. I was using the Network Manager applet to change the MAC address by entering a valid MAC in the "Cloned MAC Address" field, and then connecting to a network. This suited me fantastically as the applet applies the MAC to any interface that connects - ie. the internal Intel card or the more often used external USB RTL8187L. For reasons which would take a lot of explaining (and now kicking ones self in the head) I had to install Windoze on the machine for a week to get some specific stuff done - but have now come back to 10.10.
The problem: So just as before, I installed 10.10, connected to my router (without changing MAC) installed system updates and other packages such as Macchanger etc and got the system working and customised how I like it. Problem is, now when I enter an address in the Cloned MAC address field and attempt to connect, the applet just sits there with the pulsing waves likes it's trying to connect but it cannot. Whilst this is happening, ifconfig -a shows that the MAC has indeed been changed. Until I remove the Cloned MAC address entry, I cannot hop on my router - or any other for that matter. Before, these steps were enough to ensure correct and functional cloning.
Things to know: This happens whether I am logged in as me or root. There is no MAC address filtering on 3 routers I have tested on (different brands). There is only MAC filtering on a 4th, and in that case, the cloned MAC is in the routers whitelist. This happens whether I specify IP details and if DHCP is used. All 3 routers without MAC control have been reset. All settings to do with wlan0/wlan1 in the network applet have been removed and re-entered. It happens on 2 different wifi cards (Intel and RTL8187L) but they worked before re-installation. I have also tried the usual commands in the terminal such as:
su
ifconfig wlan0 down
macchanger --mac (mac here) wlan0
ifconfig wlan0 up
also tried hwaddress ether 12:34:56:78:90:00 etc - The problem doesn't seem to be in changing the MAC, more the functionality of wlan0/wlan1 afterwards. I have also tried (although, it worked fine without this before) adding lines to /etc/rc.local and /etc/network/interfaces. It would be worth noting that either networking was restarted or the machine was rebooted after each alteration. No avail.
I can't think of anything significantly different that I have done to this re-installation compared to the first time, so I am not sure if perhaps in the time that it took me to reinstall 10.10, a package update has come out which has altered something and it's chucking a spanner in the works. Having said that, I even reinstalled AGAIN without applying any updates and same result. I would consider myself moderately experienced with Linux - so I am pretty sure that I am not making a complete n00b mistake... this situation is just so puzzling. I have been googling for quite some time and can find others with similar problems, but no actual solution.
I have installed Ubuntu x86 10.04 LTS onto an old Dell machine which is connected to my broadband modem and Netgear Wireless Router (WGR614 v6). The router is encrypted with 64-bit WEP and allows my System76 Pangolin Performance laptop to connect flawlessly out of the box. However, my sister runs Windows XP Professional 32-Bit on a Dell Latitude D830. This machine's wi-fi card is an Intel PROSet Wireless which recognizes the router but can't access it.
What should I do on her laptop in order for her to access the wi-fi router?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Netgear DG834 ADSL router (v3) which I have used for a couple of years. Prior to that I had a v2 of the same router, but upgraded for the one that supports ADSL 2+ (here in the UK).
Recently I have been having problems with the connection often being dropped, and when I access 192.168.0.1 for the router admin page, when it is not working I get no IP address listed for that of the ISP's server, and sometimes as well the upstream and downstream speeds are listed as 0 kbps.
Usually this was resolved by rebooting the router.
However, for the last couple of days, when using Ubuntu 9.04, the page of the router at 192.168.0.1 will not load. I have tried numerous different browsers, and none of them will give the router admin page.
When I tried booting from a live CD of Fedora 13, the router admin page came up just fine, no problems (although still not getting a proper connection to the Internet).
I was going to try to use the older router I had, but so far, as I cannot access the router admin page in Ubuntu, I have not done so (not had the time, and now I am at work posting this).
So there must be a problem in Ubuntu that is preventing it showing the router's admin page. The Network connection details show that the router has given the PC an IP address of 192.168.0.6 and the DNS servers are listed, so I know that Ubuntu is talking to the router, but it is not allowing me to access its settings in any way.
