Ubuntu Networking :: Use Laptop As "wireless To Wire" Network Converter?
Jan 19, 2011
The problem is that I'm too lazy to buy a wireless network card for my stationary computer that I'm going to use on my room with no wired network. So I'm looking for how to use my laptop with Ubuntu 10.10 as a wireless to wired network converter, sorta. I know how to use a laptop as a "wire to wireless" network converter, but in my case, I need the opposite. I think I'll need a crossed network cable between my ubuntu laptop and my stationary computer (that's the one I'm aiming to get internet onto), but I don't have a crossed one, can I use a switch instead?

just installed ubuntu 11.04 on my old laptop (Dell latitude XT), to experience this OS. But for some reason I cannot get online, both wired and wireless network are 'grey', and i cannot enable them. Even when I try to go online with a USB wifi dongle,I also cannot enable wireless. Enabling Networking is selected.
I include the information I collect and hope this will allow you to give me a diagnose on how to make my wireless work.
lspci, for the build-in card

I would share my long awaited success with connecting my ubuntu laptop up to my universities (University of Western Sydney) wireless network. The rumors appeared true and they have finally implemented 802.11x authentication instead of that horrible java app netdirect. I am sure you've been cursing at its erratic stability. There is no linux documentation for airUWS-Lite nor anything more imformative than there windows/mac point and click steps found at [URL]. However with a few simple clicks you can have stable working connection.
When connecting make sure you have theses settings.
Security: WPA & WPA2 Enterprise
Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
#This is the settings that does not present itself correctly
Anonymous Identity: leave blank
PEAP Version: Automatic
Inner Authentication: MSCHAPv2
Username: <YOUR 8 DIGIT STUDENT NUMBER>
Password: your regular password

I am a first time Linux user - though I've Unix and Windows experience. So though I can follow your most tech instructions, I'll need some hand-holding.
Need help getting my wireless network to work on my newly installed Oracle Linux on Dell laptop.
Not sure what wireless card is installed, or it's mac address (though I can boot into windows and get that info, I don't want to - it'll be kind of a let down if I can't fix it all thru Linux).
Install has detected a Broadcom wired card, but not the wireless. Funny thing is that it detected the Bluetooth.

i just installed the newest version of Ubuntu on my Dell 14r(1440) laptop. It's the newest version of the laptop with the i3. I can't find any wireless networks and my laptop doesn't even recognize when i plug in a Ethernet cable from my router. There are no internet connections available when hard wired or wireless.
I have the hated Dell Wireless DW1501, 802.11 g/n 1x1 Half Mini network card, which is only compatible with Windows operating systems from what i can tell. I want to be able to connect to the internet both ways, but especially and more importantly using a Ethernet cable.

On Opensuse 11.2, I would like to connect my ipod touch to a wireless ad-hoc network of my laptop. I have no wireless WIFI-router at home, so I have to use the laptop as a router to the internet. I know I have to enter a static IP adres and my router's address, but where ? I haven't found any place under network tools to do this, only saw some fields with SSID's and MAC addresses to fill in.

I know that the wireless devices are working properly as other OSs on this HD work in various forms both .deb and .rpm. In setting up openSUSE11.4, no matter which wireless device in WPA is installed, the icon will go to the wired icon, not the wireless. You can see it trying to go to a wireless icon, but then it reverts to the wired one. I'm beginning to think that this a OS problem in itself and not an install problem.

These problems just started the last couple of days but I have been using Lucid 10.04 for a month now. My wireless Signal varies in strength wildly. I sitting at home, not 20 feet from my router. I never had these problems before Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04. I am running both Network Manager and Wicd.
Errors:
1. Wicd states "Wrong Password" which is not true.
2. Dropping off-line for no reason, sometimes 3 or 4 times a minute and sometimes it works fine for hours.
3. Firefox 3.6.3 Automatically Checking "Work Offline"!?

I have the Proper Wireless Drivers. I have not changed my wireless settings, channel or WPA for 8 months now so I know thats not it.

Recently I have installed Fedora 14 on my other laptop. It's a dual boot with Windows 7. Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.

I have a mainly windows house with a notebook running Fedora 11. The problem is that when this computer is on the wireless network it shows no computers on the network. It gives me the error that it can't retrieve the shared list from server. However when I am using it on the wired part of the same network it will see all of the other computers. I was wondering if anyone here could shed light on what might be going on. I am not sure if it is a setting on the computer or something to do with the router. However I don't think it has anything to do with the router because I have windows laptops that run on the same wireless access point and have no problem

I'm at wits end...10.04 won't connect to a wireless network on my laptop, and that sort of makes it useless. What is the easiest way to revert back to 9.10? I have a dual-boot system with XP and I'd rather not have to start from scratch.

having a very specific problem setting up the wireless card in my Dell Inspiron 1545. The card's description under lspci is this:
0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)
I have the required drivers from this website: Broadcom.com - 802.11 Linux STA driver As far as I can tell I have followed all the instructions given by the readme, I have all kernel packages that I had understood to be required but when I try to make the Makefile I am given this:
borgs0@linux-yjl1:~/hybrid_wl> make
KBUILD_NOPEDANTIC=1 make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd`
make[1]: Entering directory `/lib/modules/2.6.34-12-desktop/build'

My sons Ubuntu installation on his computer hasn't showed the Network Connections Icon in the Panel for a long time. This weekend everything was working fine and we needed to go away for the weekend and unhooked the router. When we came back the computer wouldn't connect back up to the internet.
How can I fix the Wired Connections Icon on the Panel and get the Auto Connect to work again?

I've been trying to understand how Linux creates the network/interfaces on a machine (been reading the Linux admin guide), but as I'm pretty new to this subject, I've got lost in the forest.
To provide with my goal:
1.) Learn about network setups on Linux
2.) Be able to maintain my own (virtual) network
3.) Configure my (virtual) network

This will allow you to use iphones' data plan as a wireless access point. Currently setup instructions are only posted for windows/mac using a helper app to configure the laptop. Here are the instructions I followed to setup iphonemodem2 to work under Fedora 10: Download iPhoneModem2 from a jailbroken iphone using Cydia. Create a new wireless network on Fedora with the following settings:
a) SSID = "iPhoneModem"
b) Mode = Ad-hoc
c) IPv4 Method = Automatic (DHCP)
Connect laptop and iphone to new wireless network. Start iphonemodem app on iphone. The "traffic" does not update; the "status" says "Wrong Wifi Network"; and the signal strength says 0%. However, the network connection should be there as long as you have a data signal to your service provider.

I installed 8.04.3 Ubuntu into a used laptop for a friend, it was an ex business model HP I think, it installed well and wireless was no problem, if the ethernet cable was not plugged in, I could see the wireless signal indicator, it seemed to be there automatically and I could see the available networks displayed. The user has now apparently been using it a lot on ethernet cable for a month or two and wants to begin occasionally to use wireless. She says her daughter gets wireless ok in the house on visits, so I guess that the wifi is always on and available from the (BT, UK) home hub device in the house.
The user is reasonably adventurous, and it is possible that her exploration into a new machine and a new (to her) Ubuntu from previous windows use, she may have inadvertently clicked something and turned off wifi? The user is reporting that without the ethernet cable plugged in, there is no sign of wireless being recognisedA right click on the top panel network icon shows that there is 'no network available' (X sign) and a menu item exists for 'Edit Wireless networks'I have little or no experience about wifi use, so I would be grateful for comments on how I can guide the user to elegantly make use of either wifi or cabled connection

This must be a repost, but I still want to ask, how do I activate the wireless on my laptop? I've been given advice about this a while back, but forgot. Just reinstalled a fresh copy of 9.10
Or is there an alternative way to do this?
