Ubuntu :: Firefox Always Loads On Start-up Despite No Setting For It?
Jun 12, 2011
Every time i start Ubuntu, Firefox loads as soon as i log in. I've checked the list of start-up applications and it's not there, the option to automatically remember open applications is unchecked in both startup application settings and Ubuntu tweak. Is there some other place that has this setting or any setting that would cause Firefox to load on boot? Is there a setting in Firefox I'm missing?Basically how do i stop this from happening?
Anyway, I installed Ubuntu normally. Whenever I try to run Firefox for the first time, it loads for a bit, then it crashes. Every time. I tried reinstalling it, and the isntallation was fine. I managed to connect properly. But it won't run.
What I have noticed on several versions of Ubuntu, both 32 and 64 bit (including 9.10, 10.04 b2 and UNR 9.10) is that after the launch of Firefox (including the current 3.6.3 version), I continue to get a spinning cursor for more than 10 seconds after the FF window is present and ready to accept input. Sometimes I get it only when moving the cursor outside the FF window and other times it will be in the window, too. I have even noticed it persist for a short time after quitting FF. I think it's definitely related to FF because I don't see this occur unless FF is launched, not even when another browser (Chromium in this case) is launched. To add to the mystery, I see it in Ubuntu and Mint 8 xfce, but not in Ubuntu-based distros with simpler window managers like Mint 8 fluxbox or CrunchBang 9.04 (openbox). To try to get rid of this, I have tried various FF configuration speedups available from the Net - changes implemented through about:config. These do speed up FF, but they don't get rid of the spinning wheel. As far as I can tell, the spinning wheel has no impact on FF operation - it doesn't stop me from entering a url and accessing it, though perhaps it slows down implementation.
I just installed a fresh version of fedora 11, and it went extremely smooth, except for one thing; I opened up firefox and it was at the fedora start page with a google search, i typed text into the search box, hit enter, and got a infamous "This page cannot be displayed" error.I have checked my connection, turned off the firewall, and rebooted the system. The problem still persists. I have no idea what is going on, it says i'm connected, I can do a software update which has to go through the internet connection, but for some reason, firefox doesn't want me to go anywhere besides fedoraproject.org.
My problem is that last night, when I was watching some .swf file in firefox, the computer slowed down to the point of my not being able to do anything about it. I shut the computer down and restarted to handle the problem. This worked the first few times, and proceeded to really turn out bad later on.
Now, I have windows and ubuntu on the same hard drive. Whenever I select ubuntu, I get a message saying "GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu8" and some stuff about how limited Bash-like commands are supported. I can also his tab to do stuff. By using the help command for everything, I have determined that the command "linux" is supposed to load linux and "boot" is supposed to load an OS. Everytime time I pick a command that should load something, it says that I need to load a kernal.
I have a problem with 'Starting File Manager' completeley filling my taskbar on startup. There could be 100 of them for all I know, as the taskbar ends up dividing into tiny slices for each. How do I find out what is causing this? Is there a log file I can check or some way to repair ubuntu off the Live CD?Recently installed some updates. Last night tried reinstalling Nautilus and Gnome (did that with commands from Ctrl Alt F1 ) but that has not helped.I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (64bit)Dell Inspiron 530I'm no Ubuntu / Linux expert, but I can try to find any info / logs required
There seems to be nothing in Preferences or anything, but after the other night, all new windows load in semi-full screen, where the File-Edit-etc menus are there, but the bar at the top isn't, and the taskbar at the bottom is covered by it. Its what happens with certain annoying ads, but now its any window.
I need one, cause I know this is "So easy, a cave-man could do it" (and I can't) yikes.
I need a start up script to execute AFTER my desktop loads. It's for display resolution. I've added the same script in 3 places, and all will execute, but not until I do it manually. It's being over-written by another function...
1 script in /etc/gdm/Init/Default (as per Wiki page, which has a syntax error I found yesterday):
Quote:
#!/bin/sh # Stolen from the debian kdm setup, aren't I sneaky # Plus a lot of fun stuff added # -George
[Code]....
Can I create a run level 7, like rc7.d, that will execute after the desktop loads (and everything else)? I symlinked the second script to level 5 rd5.d, and it didn't go through. I haven't tried level 6.
If I do try to start a PXE Installation, the PXE Bootsystem loads the kernel, and I guess it trys to start to load the initrd, but then it froze, i need to reset the computer. On the TFTP Server (aftp) I see that it trys to resend the initrd files and runs into a time out.
Ive the problem on 2 maschines, both with the same Motherboard (ASUS M4N78).
And the PXEinstallation of OpenSuSE 11.3 works fine, without any problems.
so I'm trying to run an extension for firefox that is no longer handled with firefox 4.0+. I've googled that you can run two different versions of firefox on the same system, but you have to have them set up as two different profiles. Basically having the two different browsers set up in two different locations running there own things from different files, etc.
How can I go about setting up an older version of firefox in a different location, instead of just running the setup in general which would conflict with my newer version?
I know it can be done, but a simple sudo apt-get install firefox (version x.x) will basically override my newer version I would imagine. I've already found where to get the older versions file and everything, I just don't want to mess up my new version
Can someone please help me as to how to install this in another location not affecting my current version? I also understand that I will have to have another command to run this older version, so maybe if you could shed some light on how to set up the new command also,
I'm not sure exactly what happened, but starting a few hours ago, every time i open firefox, the settings have all reverted to the default. I change them back to what i prefer, then when i open it again they are back to the default.
Using Ubuntu 10.10. I cannot set Firefox to open PDFs with evince. Actually I have no idea where it grabs mime info from. I know I could manually choose /usr/bin/evince or something, but isn't there a way to make Firefox simply see what my desktop settings are, or at least offer me the choices?
I thought about moving the firefox cache directory to /tmp, as I am moving /tmp to the ram, since I just got an SSD, and move off this write-hungry feature. However, with Firefox 4 beta 12 (shipping with 11.4 x86_64), when I get in about:config, there is just no option browser.cache.disk.parent_directory, which you would use to configure this.I searched a bit and it seems that this is still intended to be on Firefox in v.4.I might as well downgrade to 3.x for the moment. I see there is an RC available of v.4, but no package of it ready in repos.By the way, any thoughts on putting the firefox cache on ram? I know it will flush it at reboot! But the alternatives are:
-leave it on ssd (wear it) -put it on hdd (so slow) -disable cache
I need a download manager that automatic start download at 2 a.m and stop in 8 a.m . I test many app such as fatrat d4x .... but can not find app like idm in linux.
I have FireFox 4, and JRE 6_25, and G3 (dunnow if that's the problem). As described in the docs, I'm supposed to make a symlink to the plugin. The about : plugins keeps reporting File: libnpjp2.so as file, not the plugin.I just reinstalled 6_21 (the one I know works) and have successfully made a symlink, but FireFox refuses to accept the link. The applets do not have sound - tested with RuneScape and the Bells applet, no sound, but there is the music in RuneScape...
Everytime I try to open firefox i keep getting this message "We're Sorry
Firefox had a problem and crashed. We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts.
To help us diagnose and fix the problem, you can send us a crash report."
I restarted it, updated it, reinstalled it, but it still wont work. I do not know whats wrong with this, I am running in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, everything was working fine and now all of the sudden it stopped running.
Using an external SoundBlaster USB... set as default in Fedora 11's new sound device manager ( neat btw )...works great... except no sound in Firefox / Flash Player.
Kernel 2.6.21.5, Slackware 12.0 When I click on some audio stream links in my web browser (Mozilla Firefox), the stream comes in a URL ending in .pls, usually listen.pls. As I want mplayer to play it and not the default player, I intend to make the first the default one. In Firefox (2.0.0.4) I can do Edit>Preferences>Content>File Types>Manage and change the actions associated with each file type. However, if the type is, say, PDF, I can can only change the action if a PDF file has anytime been downloaded. So, the same goes for a PLS file.
You have an example of the kind of link I talk about here: [URL] In the case of a radio broadcast audio stream, I am not downloading it, I think. At least, the Download window does not open. The Download window not having open itsef, the PLS type does not appear in the window Edit>...>File Types>Manage leads to. And so, I cannot change the action. The action would be 'Open them with this application': mplayer.
Firefox didn't want to start after I upgraded to 10.04. Finally, I found if I tried to start it from the command-line, it would seg fault:
[Code]....
Attempting to load the system libmoon Segmentation faultI tried using synaptic to remove the nonfree flash plugin, but that didn't help. Even after removing it, some files were still left, and those were dated 2007 and 2008. I manually deleted them:
I installed NoScript and now Firefox wont start. I've apt-get remove --purge 'd, then re-installed. Still wont work. Tried to delete the folders and no luck there either.
when i upgraded my PC to 10.04, i had to add a new entry to the network interface file so it would connect to the Internet (auto etho etc.) since then firefox 3.6.3 always as being offline. each time i uncheck it then next time its offline again.
I have a strange problem on firefox. Homepage doesn't appear when I start firefox and bookmarks are missing. The strange part is that if I run firefox as superuser everything works fine.
Just upgraded to 10.04 and Firefox will no longer start. I get the tab that says starting firefox, and then the tab disappears, and I never get a window. When I try to start via terminal it says (something along the lines of):Attempting to load libmoonloaderxpiSegmentation FaultI tried logging out and back in, no dice; restarted, no dice; uninstalled and reinstalled firefox, no dice.Running x64, if that matters, on a pretty decent laptop. I would describe my technical knowledge of Linux as moderate.
After upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 I realized that Firefox doesn't start, it just shows "Firefox starting"on the taskbar for a second and then dissapear. New Gwibber software doesn't start either.I have separate /home partion and installed new version to the system partition marked it to be formatted first. Opera browser works perfectly fine.
