Using Ubuntu 10.10. I cannot set Firefox to open PDFs with evince. Actually I have no idea where it grabs mime info from. I know I could manually choose /usr/bin/evince or something, but isn't there a way to make Firefox simply see what my desktop settings are, or at least offer me the choices?
View 1 RepliesI find that some pdf files will not print properly in 32-bit 10.04 using evince. The document is sent to the printer and then the printer simply flashes and never prints the document (I have waited an hour). The same documents *will* print quickly when I print with acrobat reader, although when using reader the the following error message appears in the terminal:
(acroread-en:3915): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_progress_set_percentage: assertion `percentage >= 0 && percentage <= 1.0' failed
The printer is a lexmark X364-dn. The problem seems particularly acute with documents that have been scanned.
I'd like to be able to change the program that downloaded PDFs open with in Firefox. I'm using Gnome. Currently, when I double click on a PDF in the downloaded file list, it opens up in Adobe Reader, even though evince is currently the default in nautilus. How I can change it so that downloaded files are opened with evince?
View 3 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 9.04 and a Konica 2430 DL on USB. I can get a Ubuntu test page from the printer management screen (printout says GPL. Postscript version 3010 revision 864) and I can print from Firefox. I cannot print PDFs from either Acrobat or Evince. The print jobs show up as completed in the print jobs list.

Ok this is a problem that has dogged me for years but I was hoping it was fixed in 11.4. Using the acroreader plugin pdfs sometimes work but most often they result in a white or black blank screen and once one pdf has failed then they all fail until I restart firefox. It is a huge pain - under kubuntu I have used mozplugger to display pdfs with okular in the browser but this doesn't seem to be in the repos.
I don't think it is just me, all the people I know using suse seem to have this problem but it never gets fixed. how to get pdfs reliably displayed in firefox?
I installed evince on my Arch Linux system as a PDF reader, and everything was fine for a while. And then I installed GIMP. Since then, PDF files have been opening in GIMP. I've tried reinstalling evince, I've tried editing ~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list , I've tried editing /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache, but PDF files still open in GIMP by default.

For some reason, Evince has the open file keyboard shortcut set to "A", which means that if I'm searching for text in a pdf and I type the "a" key, the "Open Document" dialog box is called. How can I fix this?

I'm running Debian Wheezy on a laptop with an i3 380M and 4GB of DDR3 1066 RAM. Whenever I open a relatively large (~80MB) pdf in evince, my system will continue running perfectly fine for a few minutes and then at some point it will just completely freeze up. The mouse cursor doesn't even respond, and I have to do a hard reboot to get the system running again.

When I try to open any nfs-mounted file using OpenOffice, I get a pop-up window titled "Document in Use". The text of the message is:
"Document file 'abcde.odt' is locked for editing by:
Unknown User
Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing." I then have three options - <Open Read-Only>, <Open Copy>, & <Cancel> If I cp any of these files from the mounted directory to my home dir (not mounted), I can open them without problem.Also, my firefox & thunderbird date are in this mounted directory as well (sym links to ~dan/.mozilla & ~dan/.thunderbird). Both of these apps hang when trying to open, leaving two processes behind that need to be manually killed. Again, cp'ing the data out of the nfs-mounted dir onto a local dir resolves the issue, so I am 100% confident there is nothing missing or corrupted in the firefox &/or thunderbird data...

I installed the add-on Greasemonkey for Firefox and since then firefox won't open. If I try to open it on safe mode nothing comes up, it I try it a secont time it tells me that Firefox is already running and if I try to open it normally it shows it on the bottom as if it was opening and then it dissapears.

Linux with Firefox In order to connect to a network share directly from you browser under Linux, you must configure Firefox to handle URL's starting with "smb://". This is done by typing "about:config" in the address line and hitting return. After that you must right-click the list of settings and choose "New -> Boolean" as shown below.

Every time i start Ubuntu, Firefox loads as soon as i log in. I've checked the list of start-up applications and it's not there, the option to automatically remember open applications is unchecked in both startup application settings and Ubuntu tweak. Is there some other place that has this setting or any setting that would cause Firefox to load on boot? Is there a setting in Firefox I'm missing?Basically how do i stop this from happening?
View 8 Replies View Relatedso I'm trying to run an extension for firefox that is no longer handled with firefox 4.0+. I've googled that you can run two different versions of firefox on the same system, but you have to have them set up as two different profiles. Basically having the two different browsers set up in two different locations running there own things from different files, etc.
How can I go about setting up an older version of firefox in a different location, instead of just running the setup in general which would conflict with my newer version?
I know it can be done, but a simple sudo apt-get install firefox (version x.x) will basically override my newer version I would imagine. I've already found where to get the older versions file and everything, I just don't want to mess up my new version
Can someone please help me as to how to install this in another location not affecting my current version? I also understand that I will have to have another command to run this older version, so maybe if you could shed some light on how to set up the new command also,
I'm not sure exactly what happened, but starting a few hours ago, every time i open firefox,the settings have all reverted to the default. I change them back to what i prefer, then when i open it again they are back to the default.
View 4 Replies View RelatedLast night I upgraded to 10.10 RC, and everything went smooth. A lot of problems were resolved in the upgrade, but unfortunately I got two new problems.1. No Sounds at all. My speakers hum, and I can control the level of the hum/mute with Kmix, but no sounds makes it through. So Kmix is controlling the hardware, but somewhere the sounds isn't making it there.2. No system settings. The system settings panel appears in the app tray when I run it, but after a minute of thinking (and not opening) it disappears.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI thought about moving the firefox cache directory to /tmp, as I am moving /tmp to the ram, since I just got an SSD, and move off this write-hungry feature.However, with Firefox 4 beta 12 (shipping with 11.4 x86_64), when I get in about:config, there is just no option browser.cache.disk.parent_directory, which you would use to configure this.I searched a bit and it seems that this is still intended to be on Firefox in v.4.I might as well downgrade to 3.x for the moment. I see there is an RC available of v.4, but no package of it ready in repos.By the way, any thoughts on putting the firefox cache on ram? I know it will flush it at reboot! But the alternatives are:
-leave it on ssd (wear it)
-put it on hdd (so slow)
-disable cache
Im relatively new to Linux - just started working with it this week - and Im having some trouble setting up NFS. We have a 12 computer cluster running open SUSE in our lab at school, and I am trying to troubleshoot the NFS system we have created.My basic question is this - I want to find the file that sets whether or not the NFS server and client processes run on setup. Google indicates that in most linux installations, these settings can be found in the /etc/rc.conf file. I cant find this file in open SUSE, so what Im trying to figure out is where I would find the equivalent commands in open SUSE. I am basically trying to find the lines highlighted in this: <http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/network-nfs.html> article are stored. I already know how to enable/disable the NFS server/client using YaST in the GUI, but I would prefer to find the file directly, as changing the settings in the GUI involves plugging a monitor, keyboard, and mouse into each of 12 boxes, and is very time consuming. I can change files straight from the terminal command line - much faster.
Additional background:
We are using NFS in two ways on our cluster - firstly, we have installed the software package (Fluent) on the host computer, and then setup the host to share this folder with the 11 slaves. To do this, we set the host as an NFS server, with the 11 slaves as NFS clients of this folder.
Secondly, we have setup working folders on each of the slaves that we would like to use to store data (each computer has a 1.5TB drive inside). To do this, we have set each of the slaves as an NFS server, sharing the working directory with the host computer, which we setup as an NFS client of each of these 11 working folders.
The problem that I am experiencing is that each of these two things works properly by itself, but when we try to use a computer as both an NFS server and an NFS client at the same time (albeit to different folders), neither works.Any thoughts on how to move forward in troubleshooting this? My current plan of attack is to unplug all of the slaves except for one from the network, and try to get a single slave to communicate properly with the host. Once I get the first slave running, I was going to add additional slaves one at a time until they were all working. Thoughts?
I've made a lot of progress getting my easycap 2.0 usb capture device to work with ubuntu 10.10. I've got the picture up any everything works great. But about a minute into the stream it just freezes, I need to go into "playback" and either pause then play, or click "next", it then refreshes and works again for another minute or so. I'd believe it if someone says faulty hardware because the easycap is cheap, but I don't think that's the case. Additionally, is there any way to set VLC so that when I open it, it automatically opens with my video capture device (/dev/video0) so that I don't have to go into the options and change it every time?
