Jul 26, 2010I recently accidentally (permanently) deleted a bunch of files off my computer. I used "foremost" to recover all my images, but there are still a bunch of videos that need to be recovered. The problem is that foremost seems to have also recovered a crapload of files from before i switched to ubuntu (i just removed windoze today) so i have a LOT of jpg images right now (over 400,000) and i don't want to deal with that many video files!How do i recover my recently deleted videos without getting a bunch that i don't want?? (can i specify the folder they were deleted from or something?)PS: i used this code to recover my picturesCode:sudo foremost -t jpg -i /dev/sda1

Feb 2, 2011I formatted a 500GB with ext4 format, and placed in a usb box, it showed up, but could not write, copy past etc to it, the same disk was formatted in NTFS, and FAT32 showed up and could do all the above actions, given that ext4/ext4/ext2 are specifically made for Linux, then why on earth they don't get mounted automatically and work normally from usb box and ports?

I wanted to manually partition the disks, since I have a /home partition from a 9.10 installation which I want to keep.Unfortunately, I selected to convert the ext3 /home partition to ext4 and didn't realise it was formatting the partition until it had just begun. In desperation, I pulled the power plug, but now I can't access the partition (using the LiveCD) - comes with an input/output error.What are some strategies to recover the data on the partly formatted partition? Nov 1, 2010I accidentally formatted a 2TB drive of mine (big oops), but have recovered 2 of the 3 partitions using testdisk. My third partition is a LUKS encrypted partition. Testdisk managed to recover a piece of it, but it won't mount as most of it is unallocated. The partition originally occupied all space from sector 2,930,272,065 to the end of the disk -- sector 3,907,024,064. That is about 473 GBs. Currently, the partition only uses space from sector 2,930,272,065 to 2,930,288,129, about 7.84 MB.
The rest of the space is unallocated. Now what I need to do, is to expand the partition so that it occupies all the space that it used to. How would I do this? I cannot resize the partition, cause it would try to recreate the filesystem AFAIK and I don't want that, as it will fry my data. My data is not terribly important, but I would rather have it then not. I attached a screenie of kpartitionmanager. The partition in question is /dev/sdb2.

However, KPDF's "Open Recent" list behaves very oddly - there's no apparent way to clear it, and items which were on the list one day aren't on it another day (coinciding with old items reappearing on the list).

Jan 24, 2010While trying to create a bootable SD to install Ubuntu on a netbook, I accidentally formatted a part of a removable HDD that was connected to my computer. If I remember correctly, the partition I formatted wasn't the main partition of the HDD. In that case, does it make sense that the whole disk was wiped out? On that HDD there's a year worth of work, I really need that back.
I was using PhotoRec with some luck: it started to recover files, but with no names, which is almost useless, considering a lot of it are recordings - useless without their names. Is there any good recovery program that will recover all my files incl. names? Is there a easier oprtion, considering that I think I didn't really format the big partition of the HDD? What may it have been, the small partition?

Apr 17, 2011I formatted a thumb drive on Windows (not quick format) that contains files I need (video files). Unfortunately, my attempt to recover them with both PhotoRec and TestDisk failed: neither of them found the files. I know they are still there because I scanned it with some Windows software (File Scavenger) and it detected them. I'd like to try to do this with Linux, to figure out how to do it, and save money at the same time.

Mar 16, 2011I have purchased a DLink Sharecenter Pulse NAS as my PC failed. I wanted to put the two SATA drives in and extract the data before formatting to use as JBOD or RAID. However, before I managed to access my data, the setup software started formatting the drives. I switched it off immediately.
Purchased a SATA to USB2 lead and connected to my work laptop but I cannot see the drive(s). Used Partition Magic and each drive has 3 partitions - of which show about 74GB as used and 2 x 512MB as not. Looks like the drives have been partly set for Linux but the format was not comlete. Have tried to use explore2fs to read them but I cannot access the 74 GB partition only one of the 512MB partitions.
I'm a bit stuck now - any one got any ideas how I can get my files off the 74GB partition before I put them back in the NAS to format.

Dec 3, 2010I have an external USB drive formatted to EXT4.I can browse all folders without a problem. However, I can only see files under (I'm guessing this value) 400mb. Where a folder contains file(s) over that size, I cannot see the larger files. I am able to see smaller files in the same folder (eg jpgs).Looking at the properties of the drive, it says 584GB used. However, the "Contents" are only shown as 89GB and then a message saying "some contents unreadable".

Jul 25, 2010I use Ubuntu 8.04 and I deleted a few JPGs from the recycle bin. I googled looking for some methods of recovery, and discovered that the only ways to do so is through using the command line. I am a complete computer novice, and I know nothing about the command line, or how to use it. I was able to install Foremost. However, with this done, I couldn't manage to use it to recover anything from that point, partially because I only have 1 GB left on my computer space, and I can't delete anything or else it could overwrite the photos I want to recover.
This all boils down to two questions:
What needs to be done to complete and utilize foremost?
And lastly, and the more preferable option, can this be accomplished without the command line?

Jun 30, 2010I erase XP and do a clean install of 10.04 netbook remix on my Acer AspireOne. Almost everything seems to be working ok (so far.....3hrs after installation and still testing!) except for:
1: My main partition is formatted as ext4, and when I try copy back any (video .iso !) file that is larger than 4.1 gb I get a memory error and so only copies the file incomplete up to 4.1 gb. I know this problem under windows FAT vs NTSF but I have read that ext4 was beyond this... So what did I do wrong? Is the solution to switch the ext4 to ext3 and can this be done without loss of installed programs or files.
2: Video and Sound with video is not good. Lots of disturbance/turbulence and for sure not optimal for both video and sound.
3: my internal micophone is not working in Skype but it does with Sound-Recorder...I connected external mic and this works, but with lots of disturbance. Also the voice sound from telephone calls sound is not as should be.
The "hardware drivers" utility tells me that all is good and no proprietary drivers are in use on the system.

1) Win Vista
2) Ubuntu /
3) Home
4) Swp
5) EXT4 (Purpose is to share files between ubuntu and vista)
I'm wondering if its possible to install Virtual Box on both OS but pointing only to 1 virtual machine.
Also if its possible to permanently mount the shared partition on both OS.
Ubuntu Servers :: Recovery Required On Read Only Files System
Jun 23, 2010My server is not accessible any longer locally (192.168.0.2). If I attach a keyboard and login (I have done one pass of recovery from the Ubuntu live CD which helped) and check the IP address it seems to be set. However looking at the syslog file there is a line which says ext3-fs: info: recovery required on read only files system.
Is there a more extensive ext3 recovery facility I can use bearing in mind I will not (?) be able to install it?
I think I'm running 8.6 but not sure where to look to find it.
Fedora :: Restoring Deleted Files On Ext4?
Jul 20, 2009I have recently been helping my brother set up his computer with a fresh install of Fedora 11. Unfortunately things have not been going all that well. After having some problems with Fedora 11, such as it not liking his monitor and disabling Plymouth's graphical boot (I actually like to see what my systems doing!) things finally seemed to be going into place. Unfortunately the next day we were no longer able to log into his account. After hours of tweaking I finally found out it was that for some reason GNOME stopped liking his account.
This is where things went from bad to worse. I tired removing his own account and giving him a new one, unwittingly taking out his home directory in the process, all 80 gigabytes of it. And just as promised ext4 was extremely quick about it. What can I do to recover it? We have done similar things on NTFS on Windows XP, so I see no reason why a next-gen file-system like ext4 can't do it.

Apr 23, 2010I got a problem booting ubuntu 10.4 RC but i solved it by replacing root partirion uuid in grub boot menu then I disapled totally uuid passing to linux from /etc/default/grub . but something else i noticed why grub choosed insmod=ext2 why not ext4 specially I use now ext4 .I tried by editing the grub boot menu replacing "insmod=ext2" by "insmod=ext4" it booted and the three lines error during booting that i used to see them science ubuntu 9.10 totally disappeared . really I dont understand can anybody explane for me.and if what i did was right ,can anybody tell me how to make grub always and permenantly detect ext4 as ext4 not as ext2.
