General :: Get Files In Windows From Partly Formatted SATA Drive (system)?

Mar 16, 2011

I have purchased a DLink Sharecenter Pulse NAS as my PC failed. I wanted to put the two SATA drives in and extract the data before formatting to use as JBOD or RAID. However, before I managed to access my data, the setup software started formatting the drives. I switched it off immediately.

Purchased a SATA to USB2 lead and connected to my work laptop but I cannot see the drive(s). Used Partition Magic and each drive has 3 partitions - of which show about 74GB as used and 2 x 512MB as not. Looks like the drives have been partly set for Linux but the format was not comlete. Have tried to use explore2fs to read them but I cannot access the 74 GB partition only one of the 512MB partitions.

I'm a bit stuck now - any one got any ideas how I can get my files off the 74GB partition before I put them back in the NAS to format.

Ubuntu :: Recover Files After Formatted Drive To NTFS With Windows

Apr 3, 2011

I accidentally formatted a drive that was ext4 to NTFS in Windows (using quick format only). I tried TestDisk, it does find a deleted partition but doesn't seem to find any files or be able to recover anything. Is there any way I can recover the files?

Ubuntu :: Recover Files From Formatted Thumb Drive

Apr 17, 2011

I formatted a thumb drive on Windows (not quick format) that contains files I need (video files). Unfortunately, my attempt to recover them with both PhotoRec and TestDisk failed: neither of them found the files. I know they are still there because I scanned it with some Windows software (File Scavenger) and it detected them. I'd like to try to do this with Linux, to figure out how to do it, and save money at the same time.

Ubuntu :: Install System On An Additional SATA Drive?

Mar 10, 2011

I have a Dell XPS 420 with a 500gb SATA drive on which Windows Vista is installed. I also have an additional hard drive that I wish to install for an Ubuntu installation. Is it possible to create a dual boot system with Windows on the original HD and Ubuntu on the newly installed HD?

Simply put, my computer will have 2 hard drives. The original hard drive has Windows installed. I would like for the second drive to contain the Ubuntu install so that the only thing changed on the original drive is the MBR (I suppose that's how it would work).

Hardware :: AHCI SATA Drive Scan Fails At System Boot

Sep 28, 2009

Yesterday I was on my Windows computer doing homework. Once Football came on, I hit the Standby button on my keyboard and walked out of my room. Came back at halftime to discover that my system never went into Standby. I turned on my monitor and saw a bunch of code repeating. I don't remember it all, but it was something to this effect

Super Block not compatible with current BIOS
scanning for *insert system file here*.... not found
scanning for floppy drive... not found
scanning for cdrom1... not found

So I hit the restart button on my tower. When it restarted, I was brought back to the same screen. So I unplugged the power cord from my computer and counted to 10. I plugged it back in and this time I got my mobo logo screen and the system appeared to start up fine, until I got to the SATA drive scanning screen. When my computer would scan for my SATA hard drive, it would idle for several minutes, during which a series of periods (".") would show up until eventually I get a message that says: WARNING! - Something wrong with your hardware!

I have troubleshooted a number of things so far:
1) I took my SATA Hard Drive out of my computer and plugged it into my Linux computer and the system booted fine! I used the same SATA cord, so I know both the drive and the cord ARE WORKING!
2) I tested the power cord from the power supply that runs to my HD and it is working just fine.
3) I plugged the HD back into my Windows computer (the original one it was in when I started having this problem) and I ran GParted. When the GUI came on, I could not see any drives and there was a message at the bottom of the window saying that no devices could be found. This was no surprise to me because I watched the verbose mode as GParted booted and it gave error messages when it tried scanning for my hard drive.
4) I have also tried plugging it into the other SATA ports on my motherboard.
5) I tried flashing the mobo BIOS. The flash worked just fine (or at least it appeared so), but the HD is still not being found on the system boot scan.

Bottom line, I know the hard drive is fine because it worked in my Linux computer. So I am thinking it has to be the motherboard. But before I go out and buy a new Mobo and CPU (and possibly new RAM), I wanted to quickly jump on here.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Booting Windows (Vista Or Win7) 9.10 From Same SATA Drive?

Mar 2, 2010

I can dual-boot on my PC by using my SATA drive for Windows & a second IDE (PATA) one for Ubuntu. However when I try to install both OS's on the Primary SATA drive side by side only one is detected (and I have no option to boot the other).

I have a friend with the same problem who is trying to boot Win7 and Ubuntu off the same SATA drive and the same issue occurs on his (He doesn't have the second drive as an option as I do).

Does anyone know a way to get side by side installation to work on one (SATA) drive? Failing this is it possible to boot Ubuntu off and External hard drive and still be able to dual boot Windows & Ubuntu?

Ubuntu Servers :: Windows XP Disc Wouldn't Find Sata Hard Drive

Apr 10, 2011

I'm trying to get my work's infrastructure built at home before I go up there and show the boss. It is as follows: VMware esxi installed on the server with:

Windows server 2008
Ubuntu 10.04 server

I've got VMware installed. And I have spent the past 7 hours trying to figure out how to manage it. I found out that vsphere has not nor will ever be supported for Linux; which was my first problem.

Second Problem So I had to dig around for a spare Windows 7 dvd. To my UN-surprise it blue screened before it even got to the Windows installer.

Third Problem So I dug around for my Windows XP disc. Wouldn't find my sata hard drive and I wasn't about to dig around for a floppy drive and disk, in order to install it.

Fourth Problem I remembered that I had a dual boot of Windows 7 downstairs and proceeded to download and install vsphere. It wouldn't install because of some updates that needed to be installed. I installed them and got vsphere installed as well. However upon connecting to my vmware esxi, there was yet another error that had to do with some update. I found out that the error had been existent since 2009 and for some reason NO ONE at VMware has fixed it....

General :: Bios Does Not Recognize Hard Drive When Formatted In Ext2?

May 2, 2010

start getting Linux up and running. Like a lot of people, I chose an older computer I could fuss with, a 500mhz 256meg ram machine, and decided to install Puppy on a spare 40meg hard drive I have, as my bios does not boot from usb...I think...

Anyway, I have found that my bios does not recognize the hard drive when formatted to ext2! I have taken the drive and formatted it back to ntfs, and my bios recognizes it, and then back again to ext2, and nope, it's not there, thus I am still booting puppy from the cd...sigh...

Is my bios so out of date that I'm just out of luck? Is there anyway to check this?

General :: Automatically Mounting With Wide Open Permissions A FAT Formatted USB Flash Drive?

Feb 18, 2011

I have a netbook running Ubuntu Netbook Edition and I would like a USB flash drive to be automatically mounted whenever I plug it in. The drive is FAT formatted. It mounts when I plug it in but all files are only writable by my user, other users only have read access. I understand that I need to add a corresponding entry to the /etc/fstab file. I've added the following so far:/dev/sdb1 /mnt/USB_DRIVE vfat

Firstly, is that appropriate so far? I've created /mnt/USB_DRIVE as root. Next, I'm not sure what options I should be finishing the line with, especially to get all users to be able to write to the drive.
