Ubuntu :: Recover Files From Formatted Thumb Drive

I formatted a thumb drive on Windows (not quick format) that contains files I need (video files). Unfortunately, my attempt to recover them with both PhotoRec and TestDisk failed: neither of them found the files. I know they are still there because I scanned it with some Windows software (File Scavenger) and it detected them. I'd like to try to do this with Linux, to figure out how to do it, and save money at the same time.

I accidentally formatted a drive that was ext4 to NTFS in Windows (using quick format only). I tried TestDisk, it does find a deleted partition but doesn't seem to find any files or be able to recover anything. Is there any way I can recover the files?

I have a laptop with Fedora 12 on it and I accidentally did an dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda (since then I learned to think before I type)
anyway, I stopped it in time (I hope), it only zeroed first 60 MB. So, it killed partition table and boot partition. What I need is home partition, and it should be untouched. home is on a LVM device (fedora default install settings), and I tried testdisk (supposedly handles LVM) but it found only one partition (I guess it's a LVM physical device, as there should be 3 partitions, /, /home and swap) and said it's not recoverable.
Is there a way to get access to files on that partition (partition itself, including file table should be untouched). Partition contains various data (video, audio, and text) I need back (and it's my data, not backed up, and not something I can redownload). Is there any software that can help me with this, and if not, is it theoretically doable (I believe it should be, as the partition itself is not damaged, so it should be possible to read file names and link them with data on disk, am I right)? what is a good way to image the disk, so I can reinstall the laptop while trying to rescue data from image?

I have 3 drives in my computer. I installed Fedora 11 on my two biggest one, with the LVM treating them as one single drive. I attempted to install XP on my last drive. As I was installing, I selected my third drive (I'm 100% sure it is the correct drive as it is an 80gb whilst the others are 120 and 200 respectively) and told it to delete the partition on that drive and format. After I did that, it started to format, starting with my 120! I'm fairly sure that it was merely a quick format, as it only took 5-10 seconds for it to format, and that my data is still there. Is there any way to recover my "lost" data, or did I just really screw myself over?

Last night I made the mistake of formatting my media drive. Before the format, it was ext4. then I formatted it to ext4 again because I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing(this mistake only gets made once). Now im looking for away to recover any/all of my data. The drive in question is 1tb. I have not written any new files to this drive.

I have purchased a DLink Sharecenter Pulse NAS as my PC failed. I wanted to put the two SATA drives in and extract the data before formatting to use as JBOD or RAID. However, before I managed to access my data, the setup software started formatting the drives. I switched it off immediately.
Purchased a SATA to USB2 lead and connected to my work laptop but I cannot see the drive(s). Used Partition Magic and each drive has 3 partitions - of which show about 74GB as used and 2 x 512MB as not. Looks like the drives have been partly set for Linux but the format was not comlete. Have tried to use explore2fs to read them but I cannot access the 74 GB partition only one of the 512MB partitions.
I'm a bit stuck now - any one got any ideas how I can get my files off the 74GB partition before I put them back in the NAS to format.

I am new to ubuntu. I was on windows 7 32 bit, computer was running slow with viruses and full hard drive so i installed ubuntu 10.10 32 bit as i believe it to be more secure. Before installing Ubuntu OS I made a backup DVD-RW data disk, it had my brothers holiday pics when he went turkey and morroco. Once I installed ubuntu I needed a DVD-RW and quick formatted the wrong disk. Is it possible to recover the data? I've read somewhere that the data is possibly can be recover.

I was docking my laptop wich has 4 or 5 hdd connected and I plugged in a USB stick aswell. I was gonna create a new debian USB but I was to tired to notice I deleted the partition and created a new one on the picture backup hdd and formated I as ext4 and then I dd the image to it. I noises it when the USB did not boot on the other computer and I saw it was the hdd that was containing all the files.
So is it possible to recover all the picture that was formated away and overwritten with dd?

A recent update messed up my Ubuntu (actually Xubuntu) laptop, and so I want to recover a few important files off of it before reinstalling the OS.I cannot boot into Ubuntu on my hard drive, so I put in one of my Live CDs, but couldn't figure out how to get the files from my hard drive.I googled the problem, but all the solutions talked about recovering Windows files with a Live CD.I need to recover my files that were in Ubuntu

I haven't run into this with ubuntu before. I am trying to recover some files from a damaged hard drive and when I try to use the no change to computer option I get to a log in screen. But, I don't have a user name or a password at that point.

I will begin by announcing that I really know very little about Linux, not having dealt with it previously. That being said, a hard drive that has important files on it was given to me to back up without having been told it was Linux. I piggy backed it into a Windows PC and initialized the hard drive. When it showed there were no files to access I then realized this must be a Linux based hard drive. I attempted to access files with both Linux Reader and Linux Recovery but they both act as though the hard drive has no files on it. And no I did not format the drive, I only intialized it.Is there any way to retrieve files from this hard drive being initialized in Windows? I do have a Linux machine that I could piggy back it into but I have never messed with this machine before, or Linux for that matter, so wouldn't know where to begin.

The software: Ubuntu Server Edition 9.10.The wetware: A programmer doing his best (read: ignorant, shitty) as an ad-h.When I plug the USB thumb drive in, the install OS gives it a drive letter -- /dev/sdb -- and it pushes the original /dev/sdb down to /dev/sdc. The installation works without a hitch, and GRUB2 installs, dutifully pointing the root at /dev/sdc1 instead of /dev/sdb1.I let GRUB2 start normally ("drive not found"), holding the <shift> key to get to the "rescue>" prompt.From there, I issue "ls" to discover that GRUB can NOT see /dev/sdb, and I can tell that because what is showing up as (hd1) does NOT have three partitions as it should.GRUB2 sees a total of 16 drives, not 26, and one of the drives it sees is "fd0" (there is no floppy drive).Issuing commands like "set prefix=(hdx,y)" and "root=(hdx,y)" have no effect as, I think it's just pointing to the (reiserfs)content drives and this GRUB2 tells me "unknown filesystem".I did try them all in vain, hoping that maybe I'd find a kernel somewhere.I used the "rescue" mode of the Ubuntu installer (the USB thumb drive) to get to a root prompt.From there, I mounted /dev/sdc2 (the "shifted" /dev/sdb2) onto /mnt, I mounted /dev/sdc1 (the "shifted" /dev/sdb1) onto /mnt/boot,and then I chroot'ed to /mnt.I edited /boot/grub/grub.cfg, editing every instance of "root=(hd2,1)" to the appropriate UUID for the "real" /dev/sdb1. Then I issued update-grub2.It refused to work giving me an banal "no such partition" error or something like that.
We originally had this server functioning by putting / and /boot on the SS SanDisk, which caused no problems during installation because /dev/sda doesn't get shifted.We then figured it was a good idea to put our OS files on something with failover capability. And that started us down this crappy "shifting drive letter" path.Can I control which drive letter the USB thumb drive gets assigned during the install process?If I could make it be /dev/sdc then I wouldn't be facing this problem.An alternate solution would be to know the cryptic GRUB2 commands that I can issue from the command prompt post-install, pre-reboot.But I'm wondering if that will ultimately work at all considering that GRUB2 couldn't see /dev/sdb at all.

Nothing happens when ordinary users plug in a USB thumb drive or insert a CD into CDROM drive. Works fine for root. After root mounts the drives then all users can use them. How can I enable mounting/unmounting by all users?

So i saw a thread somewhere about using a thumb drive to make extra ram for your pc. This was of course on a windows pc. I was wondering if this works on Ubuntu also and if it is really worth it?
Also if you have 4 USB ports could you put in 4 usb thumb drives and have a fantastic amount of ram?

I've seen the different tools and the usb creator they have on Ubuntu already but I want to do it myself from scratch. What files do I need to edit to make the drive persistent? I want a USB drive for emergency situations. It will have sensitive information, family photos, etc. stored on it. I want it to have one encrypted portion (TrueCrypt) for the sensitive materials. I want the files to be able to be viewed on a Windows machine first and foremost. If no Windows machine is available I would like to have a bootable version of Ubuntu on the USB drive so I can boot it and also view the files.

I have a new Giada cube with no hard drive, so my plan is to simply run a Linux/MythTV distro called MythDora from a Patriot 8GB USB stick (this Giada does not PXE boot). I am having trouble figuring out exactly how to make this work. Yesterday, although I have forgotten exactly how, I was able to put a MythDora Live image on the stick and boot up. I went through the initial setup, and then, when I was all done, I rebooted, and..it started all over again...as if I was doing it for the first time. So...What do I need to do to create a proper bootable USB stick?What ISO image should I use? The full DVD? Or the Live ISO? or the Network image?Do I need to partition the stick and load the O/S from one small partition, transferring the installation to another larger one?What utility should I use to create the bootable stick? unetbootin? or similar?Do I have to do anything special to make my O/S and configuration changes persistent on the USB stick?

I want to copy my /home to a USB thumb drive recursively. I've wrestled with this for a few hours now and continue to spin my wheels.The device is listed in my Disk Utility as /dev/sdc. However a little further down it is listed as /dev/sdc1 ? Anyway, I relabeled the volume as usb stick and formatted it to Ext4. I mounted it at /media/usb stick Do I have to enter this drive into the fstab? If so, how? what do I write? Using the command : cp -R (what follows... I want to copy /home recursively to the usb thumb drive.)

I need to have a web app that is feeding ip camera feeds across internet to a server. Need to have thumb drive preconfigured with cameras prior to shipping. End user plugs in cameras, puts thumb drive in any running PC, have WEB app start with some menu options to like name the feeds. Back at server receiving feeds are broadcasted via secure web site.I have never worked with Linux but have read some incredable things already.
