View 2 RepliesI erase XP and do a clean install of 10.04 netbook remix on my Acer AspireOne. Almost everything seems to be working ok (so far.....3hrs after installation and still testing!) except for:
1: My main partition is formatted as ext4, and when I try copy back any (video .iso !) file that is larger than 4.1 gb I get a memory error and so only copies the file incomplete up to 4.1 gb. I know this problem under windows FAT vs NTSF but I have read that ext4 was beyond this... So what did I do wrong? Is the solution to switch the ext4 to ext3 and can this be done without loss of installed programs or files.
2: Video and Sound with video is not good. Lots of disturbance/turbulence and for sure not optimal for both video and sound.
3: my internal micophone is not working in Skype but it does with Sound-Recorder...I connected external mic and this works, but with lots of disturbance. Also the voice sound from telephone calls sound is not as should be.
The "hardware drivers" utility tells me that all is good and no proprietary drivers are in use on the system.
I just found a tool for undelete files from ext3/ext4: extundelete: An ext3 and ext4 file undeletion utility For me it worked, but I needed to undelete only a config file from an ext4 partition
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am dual booting OpenSUSE and Windows 7 Pro x64. Each OS is installed on a separate 1Tb hard drive. One question that I have tried to Google for a solution with no success is, how do you access ext4 from Windows? Shortly after I installed OpenSUSE, my OpenSUSE hard drive "vanished" from Windows 7. aturally, I can access all my hard drives from OpenSUSE, which does support the NTFS. I am quite sure that I am not the only person who has this problem as I know that dual booting Linux and Windows is quite common.

My headunit in my car will only display the folders and files in the order that they were written to the disk so to have any form of logic to the album / track listings they need to be written to the disk in alphabetical order.
how to do this in openSUSE? I know dolphin doesn't do this.
I have an external hard disk with lots of big files and a lot of small matlab script files .m.I would like to grab all the files inside that harddisk that have the .m extension or the *.mat file extension (both are matlab files).Of course this is a -first-find the *.m files script and -then copy the files into the hard disk. What I do not know is how I can also keep the structure of the folders containing the *.m and *.mat files when I will copy them in my local hard disk.As this external hard disk contains 2TB of data it is not possible to copy all the files first and then remove the unnecessary. So I have to find and copy only the files I need but with also keeping the tree structure that the external hard disk has

Im trying to setup samba so that i can copy some files from my windows 7 machine over to the drive on the opensuse machine running 11.2. i believe i set everything how it should be set up but no matter what i do i cant write filesfrom the windows machine. Here is my smb.conf
# smb.conf is the main Samba configuration file. You find a full commented
# version at /usr/share/doc/packages/samba/examples/smb.conf.SUSE if the

I have a 160GB harddrive which I installed a F12, would like to upgrade to a bigger drive, but I hate to have to re-install everything.
Recommend a good disk copy utility? The utility should be able to not only copy files, but boot sector and everything. So I just need to make a copy, change my BIOS to boot from the new drive and run everything as before.
just installed ubuntu couple of days back on my netbook. I am still a beginner, enjoying my adventure exploring ubuntu. I have another desktop which runs on XP. I am able to access XP shared folders through my netbook(linux). However, i wanted to copy files from XP infact folders using TERMINAL in my netbook, not copy and paste using my mouse. Are there any commands for it?

I have installed opensuse 11.3 64 bit. For many years was able to connect to a file server within our domain via konqueror in all previous versions of opensuse using: smb://user@server.ip.adress/userdata/user_name/
This would ask me a password and then I would be able to move, read, create and delete files. I never configured samba on the linux client because this method always worked. However very recently (I suspect since I installed 11.3) I am facing a problem I cannot resolve. I can still log in, browse the remote folder, read files, create new ones (for example a txt file), delete them, but I cannot copy into that remote folder files larger than about 20KB (I try copying or moving files by dragging them from my desktop into the konqueror window that shows the remote folder contents).
Small files are OK, but for files are larger than ~20KB there is an error saying: Could not write to file smb://{path_to_my_file_in_the_remote_folder}. Strangely, the file is nevertheless created in the remote folder, but with a fixed length size of 32KiB.
How can you create a script to move or copy files from a main directory into multiple directories below the main directory.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have recently been helping my brother set up his computer with a fresh install of Fedora 11. Unfortunately things have not been going all that well. After having some problems with Fedora 11, such as it not liking his monitor and disabling Plymouth's graphical boot (I actually like to see what my systems doing!) things finally seemed to be going into place. Unfortunately the next day we were no longer able to log into his account. After hours of tweaking I finally found out it was that for some reason GNOME stopped liking his account.
This is where things went from bad to worse. I tired removing his own account and giving him a new one, unwittingly taking out his home directory in the process, all 80 gigabytes of it. And just as promised ext4 was extremely quick about it. What can I do to recover it? We have done similar things on NTFS on Windows XP, so I see no reason why a next-gen file-system like ext4 can't do it.
There is explore2fs, but it does not support ext4 filesystem.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an external USB drive formatted to EXT4.I can browse all folders without a problem. However, I can only see files under (I'm guessing this value) 400mb. Where a folder contains file(s) over that size, I cannot see the larger files. I am able to see smaller files in the same folder (eg jpgs).Looking at the properties of the drive, it says 584GB used. However, the "Contents" are only shown as 89GB and then a message saying "some contents unreadable".
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there a method at the command line to copy files from one location to another and retain the source files group and user?I'm migrating some MySQL files from one machine to another.I want to back-up the original files in the directory presently. They have owner:group of mysql, some have owner:group root:mysql and so on. To copy them under cli or Nautilus everything changes to root for I execute sudo cp or gksudo nautilus and copy via gui.
Since it is MySQL data I could simply do a dump of the database and restore it on the other machine. But there's about 20 db's and I want to do this via a copy for it will be faster - at least that is what I think.
Is there anyway I can recover my files that used to be on a FAT partition which I recently formatted to ext4?

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen i installed ubuntu. I made a seperate partition so that i could copy an ISO image onto it of an up-to-date version of ubuntu. I wanted to then boot the ISO up so i could install the version that way.I've already tried doing it through the update manager but it'll download, almost be done with installing and it freezes on me. so i figured this would be easier. However i do not know how to gain access to the other partition to copy the ISO image.

View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently i formatted my HDD into 5 partition namely :-
1) Win Vista
2) Ubuntu /
3) Home
4) Swp
5) EXT4 (Purpose is to share files between ubuntu and vista)
I'm wondering if its possible to install Virtual Box on both OS but pointing only to 1 virtual machine.
Also if its possible to permanently mount the shared partition on both OS.
