Ubuntu :: Errors With Cd/dvd Drive - Is The Problem In The Drivers?

Jun 15, 2011

I am having problems with a cd/dvd drive and I would like to know if it could be a driver problem or what?
I can boot from cdroms but I almost always have problems mounting the cdrom's filesystem.

The laptop has been working for years with the same ubuntu release (hardy) but there are always a couple of warnings during boot time saying that certain drivers should be updated but I don't know how.

These are the persistent messages from dmesg output:

Code:

Software :: Broadcom Drivers - Errors When Compiling

Sep 14, 2010

I've made the real mistake of buying a laptop with a Broadcom wifi adapter on it. (That thwacking sound is me kicking myself for not noticing after spending weeks and weeks carefully choosing the model I wanted.)

lspci gives this:
02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation Device 4727 (rev 01)

I have downloaded the 32 bit drivers from here (am running Mandriva 2010.1 Free 32 bit). The readme indicates the 4727 is supported by the latest OS drivers amazingly. [URL]. I have installed the Linux kernel source files.

First problem comes with the first instruction in the readme.
# mkdir hybrid_wl
# cd hybrid_wl
# tar xzf <path>/hybrid-portsrc.tar or <path>/hybrid-portsrc-x86_64.tar.gz

The tar instruction just does nothing, so I just right clicked in Dolphin and unpacked it to its own directory. I navigated the terminal to where it unpacked and did make. I got this:

Code:

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen / Errors Trying To Upgrade ATI Catalyst Drivers

Jan 29, 2010

So xorg was acting up, and I went into the Hardware Drivers menu to see if the driver had a problem. The driver was disabled, and could not be activated. I downloaded the new ATI driver. I uninstalled the old one, installed the new one, and ran the config step just like it specifies in the install instructions. Upon reboot, I got a blank screen instead of the login screen.I managed to drop back to the command line and uninstall the driver, so now I'm stuck in ubuntu with one monitor instead of 2.

I'm going to attempt to revert to the old ATI driver (which I still have in my home dir), but I wanted to be sure to get this into the forums before I ruined my GUI again.

Ubuntu :: I/o Errors On Healthy Drive?

Mar 22, 2011

Whenever i do a cold startup (as opposed to a restart), i end up with a repeatable i/o error after roughly 5 minutes. This completely renders the system useless, and i'm talking to myself about raising elephants. I can _always_ restart right after the incident, and it _always_ starts up and i can use linux without incident for _days_.

What would do this? Is there a log i can peruse that might offer insight?

Also, this is a new sympton as of the last 2 kernel updates.

Actual solution:

See This launchpad bug. solution is about halfway down

Ubuntu :: Rsync Errors From Nonexistent Drive?

Feb 3, 2011

I am trying to backup my ~ directory to a portable drive. In the meantime rsync is giving me all kinds of messages like this:

[Code]...

This drive is neither plugged into my computer nor is it involved with my backup script:rsync $base_options -narv /home/noleks /media/Personal1/Linux_bak. I think the question is, does rsync have a queue somewhere of operations it did not complete? If so is there a way to rest this? It is possible something went awry with a previous sync on this drive but I cannot remember right now. Either way why is it trying to complete that sync when I'm asking it to do something else?

Ubuntu :: Auto Detect Hard Drive Errors?

Jan 22, 2010

Someone explain this to me. I often thought in the back of my head, how do I check if my drive is bad in Linux? I always excused it thinking well I guess besides gaming that's another reason to keep a windows partition around. I boot up yesterday and Gnome was acting weird. Then, it happened. "We have detected bad sectors in your hard drive." I thought, no, you're stupid, this hard drive is less than a year old (however it was a replacement for another one that died). So I reboot.

Boot back up - Different error message. But instead of getting it a few minutes after log in, I got it right away. "We have detected potential hard drive failure." Okay, Linux. Want to play this game? Booted to Vista, downloaded Seatools to test my Seagate drive. It failed... Swapped SATA cables... it failed... So I ask - how does Linux have this auto detect capability like that? As much as I love Ubuntu, I was like there's no way it could just magically tell like that without running the Seagate program. But alas, Ubuntu was dead on target.

Ubuntu :: Checking An External Hard Drive For Errors?

Nov 8, 2010

i am currently running palimpsest (system -> administration -> disk utility) and letting it "check" an unmounted filesystem.

i know its just running fsck.ext3 on this drive... the drive is formatted ext3, and is used on a hardware media player (WDTV Live Plus) in another room... i just moved it in here to avoid copying recorded HD shows over the LAN.

anyway, i was informed at boot with this drive connected that it needed to be checked, after booting it is mounted, but says it has errors and needs to be checked. it is checking, i would assume messages from fsck.ext3 would be logged to /var/log/fsck/checkfs, but i have never been interested in this type of thing before... usually when my drives start to get errors, its time to replace them... this one im sure is caused by being unmounted incorrectly by the stupid WDTV Live Plus...it locks up sometimes, lol...

i dunno, this is a big drive. just wish there was some "status update" other than a whirling indicator... im tailing the log file i mentioned above, but so far it just has "Nothing has been logged yet." (which i take as a really good thing at this point.

EDIT: at the very end of the filesystem check, i got a message about the filesystem being clean with no errors. id still like more of an indication than "whirling indicator thingy"...guess ill go back to CLI for checking filesystems. lol

Hardware :: Restoring Data From A Drive With IO Errors?

Sep 1, 2010

I am constantly replacing server drives at work. Our terminals use Transcend 2gb Compact Flash Drives. Sometimes we run into drives that need to be replaced due to IO errors. Which brings me to my questions.

I have heard that you cannot restore data from a drive that has IO errors. Is this true with Compact Flash Drives? It is to my understanding that IO errors are due to bad sectors on a harddrive and not the file it self. Is this true? Why can I not use the old drive to restore from?

My process is to mount the Old Server as dev/hdb and the new server as /dev/hda. Then restore the customers data. Every server card already has our software on it. We are just restoring sales info and that stores specific data.

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting Lucid Dual Boot On Hard Drive With Errors And XP

Oct 23, 2010

I'm trying to create a dual-boot system, and have been following the instructions here. However my hard disk has bad sectors, and GParted won't let me resize the Windows partition. It tells me to use ntfsresize with --bad-sectors as an option, after having done some checks, all of which I've done. I've successfully shrunk the NTFS volume in this way -

when I boot into Windows, it says the hard drive is the size I set it at. However, the Ubuntu installer and Gparted still see the Windows partition taking up the entire hard drive. So, for the installation, do I have to set the size of the volumes manually, or is there a way to make Ubuntu see what ntfsresize has done?

Fedora :: Hard Drive Reallocated Sector Count Errors?

Jul 10, 2009

I just upgraded to Fedora 11. (I decided to give 64bit a try and I am extremely impressed. Not one problem at all! Kudos to the devs.) Whenever I log in I get the Palimpsest Disk Utility telling me two of my hard drives have a reallocated sector count.I have two 1.5Tb Seagate drives (model #: ST31500341AS). One is a backup of the other. On the first disk the disk utility tells me I have 22 reallocated sectors and 53 on the second. I've been on Google on discovered that there is no easy way to fix this and that a few bad sectors are okay but too many is a sign of imminent drive failure. This obviously concerns me because both my main drive and its backup are showing errors.

I went to Seagate's website and downloaded their diagnostic software (Seatools for DOS) and it passed both of these drives. So, questions: is it possible that Fedora is giving me a false positive? If not, is 22 and 53 sectors something to be concerned about? If so, should I contact Seagate and see if I can pull warranty on these drives? Is there a way to repair this damage?

Fedora Hardware :: New Hard Drive - Disk Unreadable Errors

Dec 16, 2010

I had a set of rather unusual problems on installing a new 500Gb hard drive on my F14 system, I've solved them, but they were that unusual that I thought I should share them in case anyone else gets the same thing! I'd been experiencing intermittent faults on one of my drives, (lock ups for no reason, occasional boot ups that failed due to ' disk unreadable errors' and other odd errors). I assumed that the drive was failing, but it always showed 'Heathy' on disk utility! This was the disk with the OS on, plus my main 'data' disk had some bad sectors, so I thought I'd buy a nice big 500Gb and reinstall the whole system.

I backed up all my data to an external 'USB' drive, opened the case, (a big old under the table 'desktop', why do they still call them 'desktops'?) shoved in the new SATA drive and rebooted, intending to format the new drive to EXT4 and partitioning it before installing F14 again! OOOOOOOOOW! Major drive failure, missing OS, whole list of SDB errors! Control D, to reboot, BIOS only sees one drive; SDA (I have three, two IDE and one SATA) plus the one I just put in makes four. I go into BIOS and discover that it not only cant see any of the other drives, but my two DVD drives are missing too!

Now I've been building my own systems and mucking about with computers since before you could buy them, and Ive never seen a problem like this one! At first I thought the new drive had screwed my system, for on removal, the problem persisted! Then I noticed that the IDE connector in drive SDB, (the long 40 pin job) was just slightly out of line with the back of the drive, pushed it firmly in and what do you know, everything works! We moved recently and I think the vibration was enough to loosen the connector to give intermittent faults, and pulling the cables about to get the new drive in, pulled it out further......

Ubuntu Installation :: With NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card Drivers (310M) On A Dell Vostro 3300 - Errors "no Device Found - No Screens Found"

Oct 28, 2010

I have a Dell Vostro 3300, i5 460 processor with a NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card. I'm doing a KUBUNTU 10.10 (Maverick) install with the following results. The Live CD boots just fine to, "TEST," or "Install." Installation goes fine. However, the graphics card being used is the Intel i915. I have tried installing the NVIDIA drivers directly from the, "Additional Drivers," tool and after the reboot I get through the boot screen to the console. I try to manually startx and I get the errors, "no device found," "no screens found." The second install I tried purging and blacklisting the nouveau drivers and entering safe mode. Then using apt-get install nvidia-current. After that, nvidia-xconfig. Same results.

The third attempt I re-installed and this time downloaded the drivers from the Nvidia site (version 256.53). Blacklisted nouveau, remove all nvidia, updated initramfs, etc. The install went fine however I still end up at a console after boot with the same messages as above. No device found, no screens found. I've tried searching through the forum and web and have tried things like adding the modset option along with many other hacks, tips and fixes. still, no go.I can live with the Intel graphics for now although I lose 512MB of memory. Unfortunately there is no way to disable or change this set-up in the BIOS. I've seen quite a few bug reports at Launchpad:

1. Is this something I should just wait til a fix comes? Will a fix come?
2. Is there, or will there be an official Updated Ubuntu Guide for Maverick to install NVIDIA drivers with this tecnology?
3. Lastly, is there anything else I should try??

General :: Installing To A Wiped Hard Drive / "unable To Read" Errors?

May 14, 2010

I recently got a computer donated to me for free from my Computer Science class, as the teacher couldn't figure out what the problem was that was preventing him from booting to the startup screen (all I could figure out was that the slot the memory card was in was bad, so I switched slots and got it working). The hard drive on the computer was wiped with a disk nuker called DBAN. Now I would like to install a Linux OS on the computer, but whatever disc or distro I try gives me similar "unable to read" errors. I would like to know if there's anything software-wise I need to do before attempting to replace any hardware. An example of the error I'm getting is as follows (using a mandriva livecd):

/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: line 1281: /var/log/dmesy: Read-only file system
SQUASHFS error: sb_bread failed reading block 0xa6e58
SQUASHFS error: unable to read cache block [29b963ea:782]

Anyone know what I need to do to get this fixed so that I can install a Linux distro?

I have done this many times before and it has worked. I have an ATI card. Anyway after installing the driver i rebooted and now when it starts it show the loading bar on the bottom but then nothing happens its just a black screen!. The worst part is that when i go into windows and my external is plugged in windows wont read it and i have very valuable data on it. I go into disk management and it shows up but windows says that its empty. which is obviously not true because Fedora starts to boot. I really just want Fedora off my external and for windows to read my external with all the files still on it. Is there a way to get by that blank screen?
