View 1 Repliesi am currently running palimpsest (system -> administration -> disk utility) and letting it "check" an unmounted filesystem.
i know its just running fsck.ext3 on this drive... the drive is formatted ext3, and is used on a hardware media player (WDTV Live Plus) in another room... i just moved it in here to avoid copying recorded HD shows over the LAN.
anyway, i was informed at boot with this drive connected that it needed to be checked, after booting it is mounted, but says it has errors and needs to be checked. it is checking, i would assume messages from fsck.ext3 would be logged to /var/log/fsck/checkfs, but i have never been interested in this type of thing before... usually when my drives start to get errors, its time to replace them... this one im sure is caused by being unmounted incorrectly by the stupid WDTV Live Plus...it locks up sometimes, lol...
i dunno, this is a big drive. just wish there was some "status update" other than a whirling indicator... im tailing the log file i mentioned above, but so far it just has "Nothing has been logged yet." (which i take as a really good thing at this point.
EDIT: at the very end of the filesystem check, i got a message about the filesystem being clean with no errors. id still like more of an indication than "whirling indicator thingy"...guess ill go back to CLI for checking filesystems. lol
I have been running 10.4 with no problems for some time now. Today when I booted up it started checking the drive for errors, and I just left it to do its thing. I came back to this warning screen: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode.Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly.
I've tried all of these with no luck. When I select to run to low graphics mode, it says "Stand by one minute while the display restarts...OK".I select OK and then it gets stuck checking for battery state.I try to reconfigure the graphics, and nothing happens when I select any of the options on the next screen.
I chose Mint 8 Fluxbox and have the iso. I cannot figure out how to check the iso for errors and the MD5 signature.I'm using Windohs XP so I tried to install MD5sum.exe. When I double click on it to run it all it does is flash and then nothing. When I type in the commands it says it can't find it or it can't read it or something.I may be typing the commands incorrectly. I'm just not understanding.I need to check the iso for errors but can't understand how to check it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOn my FC11 installation Palimpset Disk Utility icon in the top menu bar is reporting that I have a disk failure with the caption "one or more disks is failing".When I open up the details section in Pilimpset I can see that "2 sectors are failing",I have checked this with gparted checking facility and it reports that the disk is OK.What I would like to do is to check the disk using a command like tool or ofline tool, which would then tell me where those bad sectors are on that partition so that I can resize it (using gparted) and have the bad sectors in NON ALLOCATED DISK SPACE.

Can anybody tell me what kind of fsck errors are found on a system?
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen installing FC 11 after a few questions about language I got:
"The Fedora disc was not found in any of your CDROM drives ...."
I read a couple of the threads on the problem and it seemed people were shooting in the dark for answers. Two issues mentioned were SCSI and DMA problems. If I go into the bios and disable the DMA or SCSI driver, and then I re-enable them after installing Fedora, will Fedora see the DMA or SCSI? Or will the fact that they were disables during installation keep Fedora from recognizing them later?
I have installed suse 11.2. Sometimes while using (firefox, okular, open office etc) x server restarts & comes to login screen. While checking Xorg.0.log i found i810 module is failed to load. Is this causing the x server restart?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Vostro 3300, i5 460 processor with a NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card. I'm doing a KUBUNTU 10.10 (Maverick) install with the following results. The Live CD boots just fine to, "TEST," or "Install." Installation goes fine. However, the graphics card being used is the Intel i915. I have tried installing the NVIDIA drivers directly from the, "Additional Drivers," tool and after the reboot I get through the boot screen to the console. I try to manually startx and I get the errors, "no device found," "no screens found." The second install I tried purging and blacklisting the nouveau drivers and entering safe mode. Then using apt-get install nvidia-current. After that, nvidia-xconfig. Same results.
The third attempt I re-installed and this time downloaded the drivers from the Nvidia site (version 256.53). Blacklisted nouveau, remove all nvidia, updated initramfs, etc. The install went fine however I still end up at a console after boot with the same messages as above. No device found, no screens found. I've tried searching through the forum and web and have tried things like adding the modset option along with many other hacks, tips and fixes. still, no go.I can live with the Intel graphics for now although I lose 512MB of memory. Unfortunately there is no way to disable or change this set-up in the BIOS. I've seen quite a few bug reports at Launchpad:
1. Is this something I should just wait til a fix comes? Will a fix come?
2. Is there, or will there be an official Updated Ubuntu Guide for Maverick to install NVIDIA drivers with this tecnology?
3. Lastly, is there anything else I should try??
I installed openSUSE 11.3 on my iMac along with "Mac Snow Leopard, Windows 7" to make it a "Triple Boot". But after installing the "GRUB/LILO", it does not chain with the boot loader "REFIT" that I use. Each time I try to boot into "Windows/openSUSE", it shows a message: no boot device found, insert boot disc". So why isn't the "GRUB/LILO" working?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu desktop 10.10 (32 bit). No matter what programs I run, the CD-ROM (DVD-ROM) drive is checking for a new CD/DVD every 5 seconds or so (even if no applications are running). It is quite annoying because of its robotic noise. The drive is empty. How could this be turned off? Is the media manager misconfigured by default?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed debian 4.0 (etch) on an old computer with some pickled graphics card in it, and then I upgraded the computer to one with slightly newer hardware only without the graphics card (the new one used on board graphics). I moved the hard drive from the old one to the new one but when I booted it up it failed to start the X-server and I got some errors listed for "device not found" and "no screens found".
I tried using "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" however I can't seem to find a working configuration. It seems pretty silly that when installing debian it can detect all this automatically with no problems but when it comes to changing some hardware around you are left in the dark with a complicated re-configuration process. Is there not some way to automate this? I'd rather not have to re-install everything
I've tried to boot my Ubuntu 10.04 from my disc drive, and installing it in Windows like an app, but every time I do my screen looks like it went bad. The top two inches are the way it should be but the rest is white, and I can't see anything. Is there some setting on my comp I need to adjust or did I just get a bad disc? The disc doesn't have a scratch on it and I've cleaned twice now.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Xebian on my Xbox (original) with a view to making a NAS and it seems OK so far except everytime it boots I get a message saying that the drive has not been checked for 49445 days (or similar amount). It then forces a check which takes ages. Any ideas how to stop this?

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy girlfriend has a dual boot netbook I set up for her with Vista + 9.10. Her internet service went down yesterday temporarily and she was messing around with the computer to get back online and somehow booted into the Windows Rescue Partition and began the Windows Restore process, then turned the computer off during the middle of the restore process. It's her only computer and she lives 1800 miles away. And since it's a netbook there's no optical drive.
When she boots up now, the netbook goes straight into Grub Rescue mode. I got her to try most of the commands for Grub Rescue, but most of them come back as "Unknown Command". The "LS" command works though, and she was able to get a list of partitions displayed.Does anyone know of some commands she could use try to boot back into 9.10 (assuming it's still there)? Or even boot into Windows? Specifically, is there a simple command that could be combined with "LS" to specify a partition and try to boot into it?
how could I mount a Toshiba external hard disc drive to my Ubuntu 9.04?

This had happened once before but that time, I found nothing wrong on booting into ubuntu. However, this time, the scan doesn't seem to progress any further after detecting the error. What is the problem?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI had to reload my openSuSE 11.1 and reloaded KDE 4.3.4 from KDE Repositories and did an unconditional update on KDE Core and Community to ensure I got all the current versions back.
I am now having an issue with at least two plasmoids that is regularly used. When I attempt to add them to the desktop, I get the message "component not found". This happens to at least these two, yasp and yawp for system status and weather. It may happen to others, I haven't tried.
They are both loaded and both are present in /usr/share/kde4/services. I removed them using YaST, then rebooted, then re-added them, then rebooted and still get the same result, component not found.
I'm having trouble with my optical drive (an LG GH22NP20).I can read a data DVD, but when I put in a standard audio CD it does not recognize it.I hear it spinning around in there, but if I check /media/ there are no files listed.?

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy K3B doesn't seem to recognise a blank CD in the drive tray.
I'm on OS 11.2, K3B & codecs from 11.2 packman, and 11.2 KDE4 factory (ie kde4.4).
When I put a blank cd in, the kde4 device notifier shows me a blank cd and offers to create a project with k3b. I create a data project & click burn, the burn dialog has a greyed out Burn button, and the media selector dropdown says please insert an empty or appendable medium.
If I eject & re-insert the disc at this point, the device notifier again tells me I've inserted a blank cd, k3b's dialog freezes for a second (seems to notice something has happened) but still does not list my cd and remains as it was before.
k3bsetup reports no problems. Burning from commandline (cdrecord) works fine. Dolphin also knows about the blank cd. I've burned to these discs before with no problems (K3B used to work quite recently, perhaps 4 or 5 weeks ago). Updates have been applied in the meantime.

I'm trying to get my work's infrastructure built at home before I go up there and show the boss. It is as follows: VMware esxi installed on the server with:
Windows server 2008
Ubuntu 10.04 server
I've got VMware installed. And I have spent the past 7 hours trying to figure out how to manage it. I found out that vsphere has not nor will ever be supported for Linux; which was my first problem.
Second Problem So I had to dig around for a spare Windows 7 dvd. To my UN-surprise it blue screened before it even got to the Windows installer.
Third Problem So I dug around for my Windows XP disc. Wouldn't find my sata hard drive and I wasn't about to dig around for a floppy drive and disk, in order to install it.
Fourth Problem I remembered that I had a dual boot of Windows 7 downstairs and proceeded to download and install vsphere. It wouldn't install because of some updates that needed to be installed. I installed them and got vsphere installed as well. However upon connecting to my vmware esxi, there was yet another error that had to do with some update. I found out that the error had been existent since 2009 and for some reason NO ONE at VMware has fixed it....
My wife's XP has crashed and I need to save files. I've discovered the command to mount the hard drive - unfortunately I need to force the mount, but I can't do it because I have to be in root. I can see the root user in the user list, but when I try to switch I can't access it. How I can do it to back up my wife's files. I have Kubuntu 8 and KDE 4.1.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSometimes at startup I get this message "Checking disk 1 of 1". Does that mean it's checking all partitions on the hd? After a bad shutdown there is no prompt for fsck to run and the system just boots up. In fstab I have both options set to "1" for the partition Ubuntu is on, all others set to "0". Any ideas on both?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an HP dv7-1285dx. First, I attempted to install openSuse 11.2 KDE via the live disk. A small ways through the installation, I was told that the image could not be properly copied to the disk. Then, I attempted to do it via the standard DVD, and a small ways through the installation I kept receiving errors saying that the packages could not be found, and gives me the option to skip. I can't install unless I skip all 600-something of them.
