Ubuntu :: ERROR: No Configuration File Found

I tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 with a USB stick, but when I start the computer with the USB stick I got this:
SYSLINUX 4.02 2010-07-21 CHS Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al ERROR: No configuration file found No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! Boot: I did a MD5SUM of my .iso file and it say "MD5 Check Sums are the same".

I have a new installation. I try to boot and instead of my grub menu, I get "error: file not found" and am dropped into the rescue prompt. I have just a standard "Desktop" installation. I installed from the 5.05 net install cd. I installed grub to the MBR.
partitions are:
hd0,2 is /
hd0,5 is swap
entering the "set" command results in:
prefix=(hd0,2)/boot/grub
root=hd0,2

So I decided to go on and install 10.04 LTS, because it is LTS... I created the live USB as directed on the Ubuntu download page. I download Universal USB Installer and it says USB created successfully. However, when I boot from the USB the error comes up as mentioned in title... The USB has no problems because I installed 10.10 last time from the very same USB. There's nothing wrong with the procedure because I am following the officially suggested method. Also, nothing wrong with partitions because one instance of Ubuntu is installed and was working fine until I tried to install video drivers (long story)...

When trying to boot a USB disk image of either 10.10 or 10.04 I get an error saying that no syslinux configuration file could be found and "syslinux error: No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found.".
The USB disk was created using the Startup Disk Creator on Maverick.
I'm guessing the second error is just caused by the first, since the syslinux.conf definitely isn't there. Thing is, I've used the 10.04 image before and it's worked fine, so I'm starting to think it's the Startup Disk Creator that's at fault.

I installed ndiswrapper and tried adding a driver. Error: module ndiswrapper not found. So I recompiled my kernel, upgrading to 2.6.33.4 (no, I can't see the logical connection either) After a week, I got the new kernel working ( in the interim I reinstalled debian- it didn't survive my first kernel attempt. don't ask), and reinstalled ndiswrapper. Same problem. So I had a stoke of genius: download the source package!! So I did. Lo and behold, a new directory appeared in /usr/src/ : modules. I took a moment to admire my work, then I jumped in.I 'ls'ed to see what was going on, and found a Makefile. so I typed 'make'. First error: kernel source not found. So I entered the Makefile, found the(clearly marked)variable, and changed it to /usr/src/linux-2.6.33.4 , exited, and redid 'make' Second error: no wireless support in kernel. So I went to src/linux-2.6.33.4 and did a make menuconfig- loaded my current, threw in wireless, and exited.

Ubuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message
error file not found grub rescue I can't say if 11.04 was properly installed or not. Ask whatever you like and I'll give the best answer I can. I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.

I'm learning about the system calls in Linux, but I was not able to find the syscall_table.S file in the linux/arch/x86/ directory. Are the sources installed by default in Lenny ? Or do we've to install them manually.
[12:12 PM:/usr/src/linux/arch/x86/kernel]$ ls
asm-offsets.s Makefile
These are the only files in the specified directory. I'm using the stock kernel.
[12:12 PM:/usr/src/linux/arch/x86/kernel]$ uname -r

However, when I look into the file it is actually blank saying something like "It works! This is the default web page for this server" which can't be correct since that is not what Aro2220.com actually displays.
Furthermore, when I try to wget files I've put on the server for myself it returns a 404, file not found.

Iv been using ubuntu on my laptop for just over a year now and thought it about time my desktop got the same. I cant get rid of the vista section of the disk because of things i have on there so a friend gave me a spare 80gb hard drive to have a play with it and go from there. So first of all installed unbuntu 10.10 on the hard drive alls fine i can boot into both vista and ubuntu, i then want to install backtrack 4, so i booted the backtrack disc and off we went, i split the 80gb hard drive in two and installed backtrack to one section, now i cant boot to anything other than backtrack. I got an option for ubuntu although this does look different now (showing up as 'ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-22-generic-pae') when i go to this option i get the message "error 15:file not found" I also have the option for other operating system, i get this message when i choose this option "error 11: Unrecognized device string"

I have a long running 9.10 installation. All of a sudden, on boot, I get this error: "loading initial ramdisk error: file not found" If I hit 'E' at the menu entry, I can scroll all the way to the end of the boot command, and it appears that the last 'c' on 'generic' is missing from the kernel name. If I add the c and hit ctrl-x it boots fine. The grub.cfg appears to be correct, it has the full generic spelled out.

My problem now is: After booting my laptop, Ubuntu doesn't load and i'm stuck in a GRUB command prompt and not sure what to do. If i type "boot" I get "error: no loaded kernel"Here is how I got there:1. I ran 9.1 healthily until I was prompted to do an upgrade. I ran the upgrade but some packages weren't authenticated so I ran a partial upgrade. 2. I reboot but I'm faced with "Error 15: File not found". After some research and going through the forums, I thought I found the solution by following these instructions to copy the GRUB files from the Live CD (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...0from%20LiveCD)3. Once I completed this, I'm now stuck at a grub> prompt when rebooting (the error 15 has disappeared). (the screen header informs me i'm dealing with "GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu5"Any thoughts on what I might have done wrong? From my reading today, I might have installed GRUB2 (even though Grub legacy would have been appropriate?). What is the best way out?

Have a Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop. 1GB RAM and 1 Ghz processor. Has a working install of Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.4 OEL uses Grub version 0.97 My OEL install works well and I do not want to make any changes to it such as upogarding GRUB to a later version etc.
I have installed Xubuntu mini and this completed without a problem.
I have a single hard drive.
I went into OEL and mounted the Xubuntu root drive so I could see the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.
I copied the entries for the main xbuntu kernel etc and pasted them into my OEL grub.conf.
title Ubuntu 10.10, kernel 2.6.35-22-generic
uuid d6ed555c-54a3-4639-af25-3582c60624ad
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic root=UUID=d6ed555c-54a3-4639-af25-3582c60624ad ro quiet splash
[Code]....
I am doing this so someone else can borrow this laptop for internet use for a few weeks and OEL is not very user friendly and also want to protect my install.

I have an HP Pavilion DV 6500 laptop running Windows 7 and Ubuntu (via Wubi). I just updated Ubuntu to 10.10 from 10.04. After restoring the Windows bootloader (which I need to do every time Grub gets updated), I can no longer boot up Ubuntu. When I select it from the bootloader, it gives me a couple of errors, the final one being: Error: File not found And then reboots the system automatically.

I'd like to install Ubuntu 10.10 in my laptop. So, I downloaded the iso file and burned into CD. I'd like to install into D drive since I use Windows Vista in C drive.
Below is the specification of my laptop.
Mobile AMD processor 2 G HZ, 1G RAM 32-bit Windows Vista Home basic
Harddisk C : 46 G (18giga free), D : 10 G (10giga free) How can I make partition and where should I start with, either Beginning or End of existing partition? SWAP? I watched a few videos but stlll can't grasp clearly how to do. I tried to boot w/ Live CD. But I didn't see the 4 different options: Try out without installing, Memory test, Ubuntu Disk test, Install Ubuntu, and Booting w/ harddisk. I had only 2 options; Try out w/o installing, Installing. Why is it so?
In addition, while booting w/ Live CD, I saw a message as following:
Error: b43.../firmware file not found.. something like this.. it was too fast to catch! However, I went on and show its desktop screen. May I not be able to install in my laptop? Does my laptop have any faulty disk or memory? I wonder. Finally, I use Wireless connection in the library so when I boot with Live CD, then internet is disconnected. Should I need to be connected before installing?

I have been using various versions of Ubuntu for many years. I love it and I want to stay with it. Now I need help more than ever. So basicly I've searched through forums and other sites which seem to have had the same problem I am having.
However, I've tried all the "fixes" and nothing works at all at this point.
Here is what I have tried so far: [url] and every suggestion here: [url]
When I put in "sudo fdisk -l" I get this:
So after trying the suggestions in the above links I would restart and still get: "error: file not found. Grub rescue>"
I am trying to install it from a usb to an external hd. I installed Ubuntu 8.4 on the same hd before and it worked fine however I need one of the newer versions to use the programs I need. I've been at this for hours and maybe I am just missing something simple.

I've had my Ubuntu crash and had to reload it. I;ve reloaded 9.1 and am now getting the error
GRUB loading.
error: file not found
grub rescue>
I have tried a number of solution attempts I've found on the internet with no success.
I have Windows 7 also loaded however I'm not getting a Grub menu only the error above. I seem to have a number of Linux partitions I believe my correct one is on sda7. I had at one stage tried to have a boot partition on sda4.
