I have been away for a while but I'm back and I've upgraded to ubuntu 11.04 when I log in to the new desktop there's nothing just one gnome bar at the top and what I think is the unity launcher on the side but there is no icons on it like the screen shots I've seen.I also have the nvidia driver 275.09 installed but it's saying Driver installed but not active.

A message popped up about the nVidia drivers I could downlaod that would enable me to do more so I did. I restarted and all was fine. Nice effects, high resolution. However, after going on XP, then going onto Ubuntu, the screen ahs gone black. The white Ubuntu logo can be seen for a while as it loads, but then the monitor goes completely blank as I hear the sound when the log-in screen appears.As I said in my title, it was the 185 driver

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter trying to make audio output work on Lenovo b560 notebook I finally succeeded but the wireless stopped working. The driver was removed. I tried to follow the instructions from Broadcom http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt and it started showing the driver in admin - drivers, it shows that it is activated but not in use, but once I get to this point

My System Specs:
Core i5-750@stock
4GB DDR3 1333MHz
Corsair F60 SSD

-GUI feels laggy
-glxgears result way too low (2100fps)
-HD video verry laggy (1080p mkv with vlc)
I can set things up on Catalyst Control Center like VSync or scaling options, but if I go to System->System Administration->Additional Drivers (I have german version installed so it could be called slightly different) there is a listing for the FGLRX proprietary Driver and its marked as not active. (Last time I tried to activate it, it broke my bootloader somehow) So I wanted to ask what I should do (before I risk my bootloader a second time by activating the driver in that particular menu)
I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have just installed opensuse 11.3 on my PC and updated all packages and all and then i installed nvidia drivers from this link SDB:NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE i downloaded the 1 click install file nvidia.ymp and installed the driver successfullybut then when i rebooted the PC for the driver to work,it doesn't work,and when i go to system>look and feel>desktop effects and i try to enable the effects i get the message that i cant enable the effects it gives me this message "Desktop effects are not supported on your hardware / configuration. Would you like to activate them anyway?" PS i say "no" to this message and it closes but i notice there is a constant use of 33% of the CPU and theres an unnamed/unknown process in the system monitor that keeps appearing and disappearing...thats quitrd because i installed opensuse 11.2 and 11.3 before and i never had these problems

View 1 Replies View RelatedI know how to take a screenshot on my Ubuntu, but I want to take many screenshots within a limited time (taking screenshots of a single execution of a program which I can not pause). Is there a program that takes the "PrtScr" keyboard key in charge and just stores every screenshot without asking? The standard Ubuntu tool pops up a dialog to ask where I want to save the file, I would like a tool that doesn't ask and just saves on the Desktop or wherever as 00001.png 00002.png etc.

1. I have installed OpenVPN. I need to connect to an AS/400 after hours.
2. I have downloaded the unbuntu version.
3. I have extracted using the package manager.
How do I actually run the program? There are no icons or anything generated. I know how to configue VPN, not asking that. Just how to run the program.
I installed that cube thingy and now all my icons down the side have gone.Only have it installed 2 days.

No matter what desktop session I choose (Unity, Gnome-Shell, Classic) I can't change anything back since the "appearance" menu seems to have been removed while gnome-shell was being installed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedFor every program I've installed, I can see an icon in the applications menu. But, I'd like to be able to find the actual icon so I can use it on panels and such in gnome.
Is there a standard place where icons from the applications menu are found?
Just did a fresh install of Natty B1 (previously had alpha 2).. I noticed this issue w/ A2, as well.. plugging in the exterminal monitor (via mini-displayport-to-vga connector) will do the following:
1) turn the screen on the laptop's display entirely black (but not turn it off).. i can move and see the mouse cursor.. but everything on the window appears to not rending or "painted" black..
2) external monitor never becomes active..
the only way to recover is to kill/restart X or reboot after disconnecting the extmon.. having extmon plugged in from boot produces the same results (and it doesn't seem to ever become active during boot up). sometimes this won't happen right away if i plug in the external monitor.. but opening the Monitors system prefs dialog will definitely cause (or detect displays) ,etc I waited to see if the issue would fix itself w/ the beta update, but it hasn't.. Any other 8,1 owners out there that can verify this issue? My (totally uninformed) guess is that it's due to differences in the display/gfx hardware and thunderbolt integration(?)
(I've seen a verification verifications of working-out-of-the-box.. but they were from 8,2 and 8,3 owners (which have discrete graphics cards))... If anyone's gotten this to work with some config stuff, I'd love to see that as well (since the wiki page for 8,1 says it works ootb). If someone could let me know where I should look to capture error output when the above issue occurs, that would be awesome.

I thought I'd look into methods of recovering from a lost password for future use, how to change the passwd and shadow should I need to. So I started an X session, vi'd my .swp files then logged off. Perhaps I changed one of these files accidentally, but my intent was just to view them which I did. After starting up my computer the next day and logging in I began an X session - "startx". The session appears to have started, but with a black screen and an active mouse cursor.
I installed kubuntu few days back. By clicking blindly I lost my desktop - I mean it is working fine but there are no icons on the desktop and there is no task bar with list of programs.
How can I reset to the initial stage when i first installed?
Trying to install the driver for my intel chipset graphics, I edited my xorg.conf and probably did something wrong. Because everytime I log in, desktop icons appear very big, because of the low screen resolution. I fixed and set the screen resolution to normal scale for my display, but when I reboot, the screen resolution returns to its original scale with big desktop icons irritating me.

The default ubuntu install places top panel icons in the following order:

The power button completely scrolls off the edge, and half of the user-id scrolls off as well, to look like this:

I suspect this is a very common problem. How do I combat it?
I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and after an update 2 days ago, I have noticed that the icons in the notification area get pushed off screen. For example, if I open up a site in Firefox with a long title, the icons will be pushed away by the title and will not appear in the correct areas until I logout and back in. Also, if I use gnome-panel everything seems to be well but when the gnome panel is not displayed then the same problem is there.

- Compaq mouse
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 using wubi.exe and after I rebooted back into Windows 7, all my desktop icons are gone, everything, including folders and/or files. I go to the Desktop folder and see my items, so I can at least access the files, but nothing appears on my desktop at all

View 7 Replies View RelatedUbuntu and right now I am running it inside Windows. I burnt it onto a cd so I could install it onto my 2nd harddrive. I know the cd is fine. When I boot off the cd a purple screen loads up with some weird symbols at the bottom looks like a picture of a battery = and then a picture of a stick figure man. If I hit f6 I can get to the option screen. I've tried using noapci, nomodeset, disabling the framebuffer, and vga=normal. None of them work as soon as I hit enter to start installing Ubuntu it just sits there on the menu screen and never does anything.

Did somebody eat them?I have read many threads with several fixes but none has worked for me I have uninstalled emerald as I thought that may be the cause, but it's still the same.Screen effects are still present (wobbly windows).
