I installed kubuntu few days back. By clicking blindly I lost my desktop - I mean it is working fine but there are no icons on the desktop and there is no task bar with list of programs.
How can I reset to the initial stage when i first installed?
I cant do anything with my desktop... It doesn't show any icons, it doesn't show any menu when I right click on it.. it's useless. I am new to Fedora 15 and GNOME 3

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just want a simple email notifier. I have started to use Ubuntu 10.10 and seem to have downloaded Gmailwatcher - it shows in Applications/Internet/Gmailwatcher. But it doesn't show as installed software in the Installed Software Centre. So, I cant uninstall it. I can't configure it? If I try to open Gmailwatcher I receive a popup asking me to open it from an icon above - but there's no icon there, I just want a simple email notifier - preferably one which I can add an audio alert.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried installing Kubuntu 10.10 yesterday and when I booted into the desktop it wouldn't show anything but blurriness and lines. It was completely unusable. It showed that on the live cd too. I then tried install Elementary OS. It installed and had the same result. This is getting extremely frustrating and I have no idea of what to do.rgot to take a screenshot of either one but I found one on the elementary launchpad bug page. Oh yeah, this happened when I tried to install the alpha of Ubuntu 11.04 too
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhenever I add something to my desktop, if something with the same name has been on my desktop previously (like 'screenshot.png'), it will go to where it was previously, which sometimes causes the icons to overlap and what not.
I just wanted to know if it was possible to make the icons always go to the first open place.
I've just started out learning to program and I'm making a "Radio Scheduler" for my brother as a mini project. I wanted to make an "install" script, which would add an item to Ubuntu's Main Menu. I believe all that is necessary is to create a .desktop file and place it it /usr/share/applications/? This seemed to work fine when I tried it out on 10.10, but I've now tried it on two 10.04 systems (one virtual) and despite it being in the applications folder (so it moved in okay), it isn't showing up at all in the menu. code...
I'm not entirely sure about some of that (categories for instance), as I just used another file as a reference. But it seemed to work fine on my 10.10 system, so I don't understand why it won't show up on the others? Should be in Sound & Video if I'm correct... I'm still pretty new to Linux, so sorry if I've got anything completely wrong.
Well, as described in the title, I can't see the desktop icons, and the "show desktop" option under "gconf-editor >apps>nautilus>preferences" says it's not writable...
I tried deleting the nautilus configuration folder, and the gnome configuration folder...
Just now i downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 beta editionI don't know how to unhide the Computer, Home, and Trash desktop icons in GNOME. I already tried gconf-editor -> apps -> nautilus -> desktopCheked the box beside computer_icon_visible, home_icon_visible, and trash_icon_visible. I already tried it in Ubuntu 10.04 without success.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just recently installed Kubuntu desktop onto Ubuntu and I don't have any shutdown or restart options shown in KDE, but they show up in Gnome. I initially installed Kubuntu using GDM instead of KDM and switched to KDM when I saw that my Gnome taskbars overlayed my KDE taskbars. To switch from GDM to KDM I used the following command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
After enabling KDM the terminal suggested a command to configure KDM, however I can't remember the command. I ran it and I got a message that KDM was already configured.
I am trying to uninstall the packages that were installed as part of kubuntu desktop. I have gotten ~3 quarters of them, but didn't know if there was a better way than trying to pore over synaptic.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSomehow my restart/shutdown button is gone from the top right hand side of my main menu in Ubuntu. I've managed to get a shutdown button back on the menu by right-clicking it and selecting "Add to Panel..." but I really want the original button back in there. I'm not sure what caused it to disappear but I think it was the updates that ran yesterday. Is there anway to restore my main menu to its original, pristine state? If so, that would rule.

I checked synaptic for wine, but it doesn't show as installed.
I just installed Fedora 15 with the gnome desktop which looks like the android system for mobile phones, I installed wine which put the icons on my desktop but whenever I install a windows app it doesn't put an icon on my desktop for that particular application. How would I add an icon for those window apps so I can lunch them from the desktop, I don't know if you call that the desktop or just the program luncher either way how do I put an icon there so I can run those windows apps from there?

I have a Broadcom B4312(I believe) wireless card and installed the drivers for it, but under the Wireless tab in Network Connections, it doesn't show "wlan0" or anything similar to "eth0"(which it shows under "Wired"). I ran iwconfig and this is what I got:

Installing on 10.10 64-bit works fine following the instructions on url. The BBC Desktop functions well once I reenabled KWallet.
My problem is that when I refresh the repositories the BBC Desktop is reported as broken, and the reason seems to be that AdobeAir does not show as installed in Synaptic. It does not matter if I install AdobeAir using .deb or .bin, it still is not reported as installed. Any ideas about how to make AdobeAir show as installed?
I installed Fedora 12 yesterday. After installation, I added some packages like gstreamer*, amarok, vlc etc.
Once I rebooted, all desktop icons became invisible and I'm unable to open file browser and browse files/folders.
When I log out, I get this message saying "File Manager not responding!"
I initially thought I messed up with settings, and created a new account. Still no use.
BTW, I use Gnome Desktop Environment.
I went further and installed Fedora 12 again. And did the same package installation. And after reboot, no desktop items is visible and can't browse files/folders using file browser (nautilus).
I have a user who just got a new laptop and when he connects to the FTP server, it verifies his username and password like it should, but when it goes to do the directory listing, it just kinda sits there. if i refresh the view, the folders show up. wonder if there's something in a log somewhere for vsftp i should be looking at. it could just be his ftp client or air card too, but i want to be thorough on the server too becuase it will help me learn.

Afterwards I get a message, that the netbook connected to the internet, but the Unity desktop doesnt show. Still the magenta desktop without anything. Already have tried to select the previous linux edition on the grub-menu, but no change.
