Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Process Halts With A Black Screen

Aug 16, 2010

I'm trying to update an older laptop for my nephew. It was running Hardy Heron (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) successfully.

However, after installing a clean copy of Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS), the boot process halts almost immediately with a black screen. There is no blinking cursor and no hard-drive activity.

When I hold down the "Shift" key after the rebooting the computer, I'm able to edit the grub2 boot options.

When I remove the "quiet" boot option, I'm able to see about a page of text before the boot process halts and displays the black screen. Here is the last bit of text that appears just before the black screen:

Code:
...
Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom ...
Done.

At this point, the font style changes slightly. Then the text is replaced by the solid black screen. There is no blinking cursor, and the hard drive activity ceases.

I've tried booting in rescue mode: This also halts at a solid black screen.

This is an older laptop: I had to boot the installation disc with the boot option "noapic" in order for the installation disc to run.

However, the installation seemed to run normally. I was able to finish installing the system. But, after removing the installer disc and rebooting, we were met with that solid black screen almost immediately after booting.

I used the minimal install disc: [URL]

I've verified the MD5 checksum for the disc image. And I've successfully used this same disc to install Ubuntu for my mother.

But my little nephew is left without a usable system.

Could we be missing a boot option?

Fedora Installation :: Boot From Installation DVD - Boot Process Doesn't Make It Even To Anaconda

Jun 15, 2009

I'm trying to install F11 on a machine that was running well under F10 just a few hours ago. I made some changes to the disk configuration, involving the addition of a dmraid-controllable fakeRAID card (SiL 3124 I think) and creating a RAID 0 array out of the two drives connected to the motherboard itself (Intel ICH7R). Otherwise the machine's configuration is identical to the way it was when running F10. My problem is thus: when I boot from the installation DVD (64-bit), the boot process doesn't make it even to anaconda. Here is the error I get, right after md devices are autoconfigured:

OpenSUSE Install :: Finishes The "Performing Installation" Process Then The Screen Goes Blank?

Mar 11, 2010

The graphical install goes fine all the way up until it finishes the "Performing Installation" process. Then the screen goes blank. Tried each display option for the install, and finally the text option got me through to completion. So now I've gotten to the command line, and when i try to startkde, i get the message "$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server."I'm not well versed in linux yet, so a lot of these messages don't yet mean much to me. In the course of messing around with this I'm getting the feeling that it's Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 that's causing the problem here.

Fedora Installation :: F10 Dies After Installation Screen / Solve This?

Apr 16, 2009

Computer: Dual AMD 280 Processors, Tyan Thunder K8WE S2895 Motherboard, 8x 2GB DIMMs.

Installed Fedora 10 86x64 from ISO burned to a DVD. Installation went ok, and computer needed to be rebooted at the end of the installation. Upon restart, Fedora 10 loaded to initial setup screen where user name, date, time, etc are set. At the end, as this is a stand-alone computer, the setup requests to send data of computer setup to Fedora.org and this request has to be denied. Pressing the Finish button ends up killing the system. The system doesn't reboot, what does happen is that the screen goes to black, and no signal is given to the monitor; the system hangs at this state. I've tried to see if giving the setup the ability to send the system data would change the end state upon pressing Finish, but nothing changes.

Fedora Installation :: F12 64 Bit - Starts The Boot Process And Then It Hangs

Dec 28, 2009

I'm attempting to install F12 64 bit. I currently have F10 running on this system. I'd like to do a clean install. I'm using the DVD. I boot the computer with the DVD in. I choose the first option (Install or upgrade). It starts the boot process and then it hangs. [URL]

After asking at #Fedora I was given the advice to boot with `intel_iommu=off`. That gets me slightly further in the process. It gets to the point where anaconda is starting. Then all heck breaks loose. It appears the monitor loses the signal from the computer (power light turns red just like if the computer was off). The caps lock and the scroll lock lights on the keyboard blink about once a second. The DVD drive continues to spin for about a minute and then stops. Since I have no display, I have no idea what's going on.

Fedora Installation :: Process Hangs When Hourglass Filled Up

Jun 24, 2010

I tried to run Fedora 13 from a live CD on my old HP Pavilion a375c desktop (512MB RAM,3GHZ CPU,160GB Hard drive). The installation CD boots, shows the Fedora hourglass, but hangs when the hourglass is filled. I have used the same CD on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 and a Dell desktop with 512MB memory without any problem. So the problem seems to be on the HP side. I've also tried to boot with CDLinux and Ubuntu live CD on the HP machine. All have the same symptom - hangs at the end of the hourglass during boot. Anything I can do to pass this stage? The HP spec is here: [URL].

General :: Fedora 14 - Stuck At Post Installation Process

Feb 7, 2011

I am pretty new to Linux OS's, but I have gone through the process of installing linux onto several of my system already. The problem I am having is when I attempt to install Fedora 14 onto my Unbuntu 10.10 (erasing Unbuntu to be specific) I am stuck at the Post-Installation process.
I am using a CD-RW to install Fedora onto my Ubuntu, and I installed Ubuntu onto the computer originally with another CD-R.

I assume this usually takes a few minutes, as the pop-up says that it may take several, but it has been several hours with no progress. I was pretty far into the installation when the pop up appeared, and it said:
"Post-Installation: Performing post-installation filesystem changes. This may take several minutes.".
As I said, it has been several hours.

Fedora Installation :: Process Hangs On File 841of 1091?

Aug 8, 2009

New to linux. Trying it out on old laptop. First effort to get off MS OS. Toshiba satellite, celeron processor. Probably around 5 years old. Not sure about the rest of the specifics. Downloaded fedora 11, i386 version for DVD. Performed the media check at the beginning of the install (passed). 3 attempts to install so far. Begins without issue. Gets to installing file 841 of 1091 and just hangs. First time it was file # 831. Have let it sit for as long as 7 hours before shutting off power. Do I need to start with earlier version? Would like to confirm before I spend a bunch of time on downloads and burning disks.

Fedora Installation :: How And When To Load Kernel Module In Boot Up Process?

Jul 19, 2010

For a diskfull node (the OS installed in a disk), I can use the 'insmod' command to insert a kernel module into the kernel. And after the reboot, the module is still in the kernel. I have a question here: how, when and which kernel module will be loaded in the boot up process for a diskfull node? And for the diskless node, can I use the chroot or some other ways to install the kernel modules into ramdisk, so that kernel module can work when the diskless node boot up? I think it needs certain mechanism to load the kernel like the boot up of diskfull node.

Fedora Installation :: 10 - Get To Select The Intel RAID Driver In The Install Process?

Jan 12, 2009

Installing new Intel server S5000VSA (Sapello) motherboard with RAID 1. Downloaded F10 32 bit DVD and run install. Everything works fine and select Samba and all that. Install completes but on reboot get a blank screen.

I know with Windows one has to load the RAID driver off the Intel driver CD, so guess that is the problem. But how do I do this in Fedora? Question: How do I get to select the Intel RAID driver in the install process? There does not seem to be any place to stop and make this selection. I tried selecting the Red Hat and Suze installs on the Intel configuration assistant but it then reboots and that is it. In Windows it would ask to insert the Intel driver CD but that does not happen. So I am stuck. I loaded Fedora some 3 year ago and like it but then it was not on a RAID setup. I created a VMWare install on my desktop and did the same install options and it works. So the DVD seems fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 - Dual Boot - Over Simplified Installation Process

Nov 2, 2010

I'd just like to express my disappointment in the new installation manager you have, it is a massive downgrade from the previous ones. When I tried installing via your new manager it presented me with a few problems, first of all it would not correctly detect my partitions, I have 2 separate partitions, my windows and what acts as my play around, I install Linux distros, play around and install another when I get bored or run into bugs, so this is not my first time installing anything. When I tried installing I assumed the option to "Install alongside other OS'" would work perfectly, but instead of asking to remove what was openSUSE (which is what it would do in previous versions and other installation managers)and just install Ubuntu on top, instead it wanted to resize my windows partition and install next to that, this is obviously not a good idea because it would cause a lot of problems for windows, and windows wouldn't boot without me running a repair. So I tried using GParted to delete my openSUSE installation. I then tried to install the same way, but with no luck, it; didn't see the free space. So I manually set a swap of 2GB and the rest of the partition as ext4 starting in "/" (This is the only way it would work and have no idea what it means). Ubuntu installed and works... however.

I am also disappointed in the lack of control over the installation when it finally happens. First off, it starts to install even before you have selected where you are, with no option to stop, or pause. Second, it does not ask whether you actually want GRUB, which OS is going to be booted by default and how long it should display options before booting. Third, it assumes you want the root password to be the same as the user password and has no option to add more than one user or set a separate root password.

This installer is an insult of peoples intelligence. I'm a windows guy, but not that stupid. There is making it easy, and making it so damn easy no one ever learns anything, because it's all point-and-click.

Fedora Installation :: Can Not Get To Log On Screen

Aug 25, 2010

I am running Fedora 13 64 bit with NVIDIA video drivers.Everything has been going well with all updates until the update down loaded today. It installed kernel 2.6.33.8-149 Fc13.x86 among a few other files. It asked for a restart and now I can not get to the log on screen.Everything seems to boot through the start up but there is no log on screen. I just get a blank screen with the cursor in the top left.If I type from the keyboard I can see some letters etc appear but nothing else.I am not sure but it seems to me that the NVIDIA modules used with the previous kernel may not be compatible with the new kernel or they have not recompiled.

I have now booted into the previous kernel and eveythiong seems to be working.Question how can I remove the NVIDIA drivers from the new kernel so I can run the system in "X" or how do I load new NVIDIA drivers to the new kernel so I can use it. This unless some one else knows of another problem that gives this result. It is just that I did not see any NVIDIA driver files in the listing for the new kernel.
