I installed Ubuntu 10.04 using wubi.exe and after I rebooted back into Windows 7, all my desktop icons are gone, everything, including folders and/or files. I go to the Desktop folder and see my items, so I can at least access the files, but nothing appears on my desktop at all

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have checked quite a few post without coming up with an answerIhave Lucid 32bit release installed with compiz visual effects normal.I have lost the mounted drive icons from the desktop as well as the ability to save to the desktop or a right click menu on the desktop.
Any file saved to the desktop folder does not appear on the desktop.I have reinstalled compiz, the nvidia driver and tried all manner of settings but just can't crack this one
I have lost some icons from my desktop, they are, firefox, yast, thunderbird, emacs, the space and the names are still there, and when I hover the mouse over the space, it is highlighted as it should be. The application opens and runs as normal when I click on the space where the icon should be. The icons are also missing from the favorites bar on the left side and also from the panel top left when the app is running.I have tried, rebuilding the icon cache in 'usr/share/icons/hicolor', and also all othercon caches for that matter, and no difference. I tried uninstalling and installing the app, no differenence. I tried changing themes and icons from Tweak Tool, no difference. As far as I can see the icons are there in the hicolor directory

How can I reset to the initial stage when i first installed?
Like the title says, I uninstalled wubi 10.04 last night and I noticed that my computer was running extremely slowly. I checked the amount of RAM and it said I only had 1 GIG which is definitely wrong. I have 3 GIGs. how I can recover that lost memory? I've tried searching google and haven't really found anything promising..
Also: I'm running windows 7 32-bit on a Sony VGN-CS190.
I installed Wubi 9.10 on my windows 7 net-book and it failed to install, so I found a tutorial and tried again to install Wubi. My problem now is it failed a second time now because I did two attempts of 30 gig installs I am missing 60 gigs hard drive space and cant figure out how to recover the lost space. I have uninstalled Wubi / Ubuntu from programs but still no recovery. It needs to be recovered so I can dual boot properly given that I use Ubuntu and Windows

It doesn't shows me any application icons. like VLC, XCHAT or even the Active Connection icon. Except that, everything is working as like a fresh install. I was messing around with the "Login Screen" utility and changed the session choice to "User defined session" (or something similar). I thought this would allow me to pick the session to use (Unity, Gnome) but that was wrong. So right now, when I login, I have a blank screen with no menu bars. If someone could give me the commandline command to run the "Login Screen", I should be able to switch it back.

I edited some mpeg videos using Mencoder to crop unwanted footage from the beginning and the end. It worked, but now the file does not have a "visual" icon, i.e. a still from the video. The properties of the new file also reveal that it thinks it's an audio file! The file still plays (as a video) okay though.A typical command I used to extract just the first 14 seconds of the video was:

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 using Wubi. Everything works well, but randomly while I am working my screen will go black and say out of range or no signal. My monitor is a Planar, I have resolution and refresh rate set at factory specs and most of the time it is clear and working well. It seems to be completely random, sometimes it happens while surfing the web, other times I am using gimp, and sometimes I am not near the PC at all. I assume the problem is also the reason I can not use Compiz as well. (Graphics card is a intel 845).

I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed ubuntu 11.04 using wubi with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. The operating system works fine. Althoughwhen I boot and choose linux I get an error message during boot which stays forever. I have to shut down using power button and start again when it boots fine.
Another problem is when I restart from ubuntu it restarts back to the desktop but when I shut down, it does not shut down the computer. Stays on with blank screen forever. I am attaching the image of latest error I received on boot.
If I use Dosbox in full screen mode, and then exit back to KDE, my desktop icons get shuffled around.I'm using the desktop folder view in KDE 4.4.3I've noticed that this also happens with ScummVM as well, so I think it's more a KDE issue?

According to the Wubi FAQ one can "select the desktop environment within Wubi" - does this mean that after installing Ubuntu using Wubi, once can opt to log in with KDE etc. each time? Or do they need to be installed separately?

I tried deleting the nautilus configuration folder, and the gnome configuration folder...
today i've installed kubuntu with wubi for windows 7 on my hp pavilion dv6 with processor Intel Core i7 Q720 @1.60GHz with 4 Gb of RAM @ 64bit with NVIDIA Geforce GT 230M but i've had some problems.Infact the system continued to freeze after some minutes due to overheating so i restarted the computer and the Bios told me that to prevent damage to internal components the computer has been freezed. I repeated the process and i checked out the temperature with the desktop widget and it actually reached after some minutes 80-85� C so i cleaned the computer and the temperature turned back to normal (50-60�C) but the problem continued to exist! After several minutes the computer freezed again and the BIOS told me the same things he told me before (90� and computer freezed due to prevent damage for overheating).
