Ubuntu :: Disable Internet Access For A Single User

Jan 17, 2011

I have a Lucid Ubuntu installed on my home PC with two user accounts, AmHero and simple. I would like to have all internet access disabled when my kids login with the 'simple' userid. And yes, internet should work when I login using AmHero. I tried this:

[URL]

..but this does not work and gives some errors on the terminal.

I can paste the errors, though I am not sure this will even work as I found this in an old post.

Server :: Allow Access To Directory Only To Single User

Jun 30, 2010

I have a file server on my network. It is accessed mainly by linux machines throught NFS, but sometimes I need to access it from windows, and I managed to get Samba up and running with only one share with no password, which is what I want.My users have their "private" folders which are just chmodded 700, and under NFS it works fine, but on samba I get, of course, access denied. How can I configure samba so that it asks a password to access those directory? They can become separate shares, and have their own username and passwords (not the ones in /etc/passwd in the server), I don't care.

Debian :: Remote Network Access To Single-user Console

Jul 11, 2010

When I start an upgrade or dist-upgrade from single-user mode, and walk away for a long time, I will have found that some packages insist on prompting for answers to questions midway through. That requires me to physically check the console periodically, and that becomes less practical for long upgrades. Is there a way for me to somehow remote into that console and answer any prompts that would popup? By "way" I mean not involving KVM switches or other hardware other than the LAN setup I have now (i.e., I am able to ssh into the machine being updated from another machine, but not when the machine is in single-user mode).

BTW, the reason I am using single-user mode is that, in the past, I have had problems with upgrading packages like GNOME when I am logged into the GNOME Desktop.

Ubuntu Networking :: Disable 'internet' For One User

May 27, 2010

I have searched for hours and have found nothing that works. Its just amazing that I have not destroyed my laptop yet. What I want to do is keep my child off the net under his user account. I have Karmic installed currently. I have tried adding an iptables rule: sudo iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -o eth0 -m owner --uid-owner test -j REJECT

That does not work. So then I tried to disable the network card for just one account... no go.I can only stop access totally for both users which doesn't work for me very well. No method gives me what I need. I want a way so I can login and use the computer normally AND an account he can login to and use but with no web.

Debian :: Disable For A User The Access To Usb Pen?

May 15, 2010

I want to refuse access for some users to usb pen and audio. In previous releases (debian, ubuntu , debian-based ..) , it is enough to remove the user from the group.

that is in /etc/group
audio:x:29:bela
plugdev:x:46:bela,geol

with theses lines : bela can heard sound, but not geol, for bela and geol the usb pen is automatically mounted. But not for nobody else. It is NOT the case in the new release, I mean, even if I remove a user from the plugdev group, the usb pen is automatically mounted for that user.

General :: PPPOE Server Access Internet Clients Fail To Access Internet

Aug 26, 2010

I have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server. However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.

On passing the routing command I get
Destination Gateway Iface
196.44.x.y 0.0.0.0 ppp0
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 eth2 (my subnet)
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ppp0.

The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?

General :: Single Process Firefox (Disable Fork)

Aug 31, 2010

I would like to run versions of Mozilla Firefox 3.6.5+ as a single process, just as it was in versions 3.6.3 and prior. The reason is that, on Linux, I am running within proxychains - which doesn't bind to forked processes. Because the plugins in versions 3.6.5+ run in a forked process I can't use proxychains to redirect Flash streams. Is there a setting in modern versions of Firefox that allow me to run plugins in the main process?

Ubuntu :: Always Going Single User After Boot?

Nov 22, 2010

I'm running mythbuntu on 10.04 with an AMD athlon and nvidia geforce4 (nvidia-96) graphics. Shortly into the boot procedure, the system appears to switch into single user mode, killing all the processes I want running and dropping me into the recovery menu.

On 20 Nov I was having problems booting the system, which I traced to a probably loose sata cable to the (single) hard drive. While working on this I performed a normal system update, and then started having the problem described above. the update included

menu 2.1.43ubuntu1
libc-bin 2.11.1-0ubuntu7.5
plymouth 0.8.2-2ubuntu2.1
grub-pc 1.98-1ubuntu8
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.4

I however, have DSL 3.0Mbps and want to know how I could get him a DSL modem to dial up to my server at my house and receive internet. I know that I would probably need two phone lines to do this, but apart from that.

Server :: Cannot Get Out Of Single User Mode

Mar 18, 2011

I am running redhat ES 5 on a dell server and recently, I ran into a snag where I was able to reduce a partition (ext3) but could not run resize2fs (mismatch between physical and logical blocks (i never found a solution to this). In any case I decided to log in a single user mode (appended 'single' at the GRUB loader prompt) and now I am always taken to this single user mode every single time I reboot and can't seem to get out of it. I have tried init 5 (runlevel that the system is set to boot into by default) but that does nothing (no message on the # prompt).Of course, I have 2 problems here:

1) partition issue
2) cannot log out of single user mode.

Ubuntu Networking :: Using Lan And Internet Simulataneously Through A Single NIC?

Dec 22, 2010

I have been using ubuntu for more than 3 months now . I was wondering if could use LAN and Internet simultaneously in windows, why that should not work in ubuntu? I tried as much as I could, searched different forum and thought there is no way I can get around with it until recently I found a solution in a forum. For your information I use ppoe for connecting to Internet.

The solution was as simple as running this simple command sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.x.x netmask 255.x.x.xI have replaced those x with my desired number. It worked like a charm! Now I could browse LAN shares and Internet simultaneously! How to do it and forget it? I mean I don't want to do it every time I dial my connection.
