View 3 RepliesHow can I disable Internet access for programs running in Wine?
View 3 RepliesMy current setup is:
* Dual GTS 250 video cards
* 3 Monitors
* Used nvidia-settings to run each monitor as a separate x session
* This is all running on Linux Mint Debian Edition
When running games (Starcraft II) in Wine via PlayOnLinux, I've found that the mouse does not get locked. I already tried various solutions littered across the web and none work so I'd rather just disable my other two monitors while playing. Does anyone know of a method where I can turn off my other two monitors (not my primary monitor) while running Wine and then turn then back on afterwards? I don't mind having to manually run a script before and after gaming.
This is the output of my xrandr for each of my monitors (I get a different xrandr depending on which X session (i.e. monitor) I try xrandr on):
Primary Monitor
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 175, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 1920 x 1080
default connected 1920x1080+0+0 0mm x 0mm .....
Second Monitor
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 1: minimum 320 x 240, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024
default connected 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm .....
Third Monitor
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 2: minimum 320 x 175, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024
default connected 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm .....
I could not figure out from the above outputs what I should be using for the --output flag. I assumed it was default and tried the following:
~ $ xrandr --output default --off
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
But as you can see, it didn't work. Additionally, since all three xrandr outputs list the monitor as default, I wouldn't know how to turn my other monitors back on afterwards (if the command did work). Do you know what might be wrong in my nvidia-settings or what else I could try?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have used other distros on and off in the past with no trouble, but for some reason I seem to have had this problem with several versions and flavours of Ubuntu on various systems. I've never solved this problem the previous times I've had it, just given up. But this time I actually need to get this working. I've recently upgraded my computer, so my old system has been relegated to HTPC duties in my lounge. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and I'm having issues getting internet access with some programs, while others work fine.
Firefox and Evolution haven't been able to access the internet from the start.Empathy IM has no trouble connecting to my MSN and Facebook accounts.I had no trouble downloading and installing Google Chromium browser through Ubuntu Software Center, and have no trouble accessing the internet with Chromium. On the first boot after the install, Ubuntu automatically told me to update my nVidia drivers online, and did so without error.Update Manager detects updates, but fails to download them.
I successfully and flawlessly downloaded installed XBMC Media Center and some related skins and things through Synaptic, but XBMC cannot access the internet. However it can access shared files over my LAN, including Windows 7 shares.Ubuntu itself cannot access any files on my Windows 7 computer. It can access the work group and see my Win7 shares, but refuses to mount them. Strangely, XBMC can access these shares and stream media from them fine.
I see from the netspeed applet that my computer is downloading stuff almost constantly. Not a whole lot, 8b - 700b per second while apparently doing nothing. Some of this is just responding to broadcasts from the router, but surely not all. I would like to be able to determine which programs are accessing the internet over that wireless card, with a view to cutting down on my bandwidth usage. Is there a program that can tell me which ones are doing what at a given time?
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhat distro is the easiest for a new person to get started? I also need wireless internet access. I've tried to do this once before with linux (mandriva as I recall, I gave up)before and had problems installing the programs that would allow that. Also are there Linux versions that I could install on my pocket PC?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a Lucid Ubuntu installed on my home PC with two user accounts, AmHero and simple. I would like to have all internet access disabled when my kids login with the 'simple' userid. And yes, internet should work when I login using AmHero. I tried this:

I can paste the errors, though I am not sure this will even work as I found this in an old post.
How can I uninstall / purge wine and any wine installed windows programs?I've tried deleting .wine (hidden folder)but in /usr/bin/ there are a number of wine related files. And wine sub menu still appears in Applications menu

Preferably, I would like a notification to come up every time an application uses the internet. Is there any (n00b friendly) software available to do that?

I need to remote access a PC(running winxp) from my laptop(running ubuntu 10.10) over internet.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI seem to recall that there is a utility that sets up and manages completely different Wine installations for different programs. People use it primarily for games, so that the necessary tweaks and config options that work well for one game do not interfere with another.
I can't remember the name of it, though, and no amount of searching has reminded me.
I have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server. However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.
On passing the routing command I get
Destination Gateway Iface
196.44.x.y 0.0.0.0 ppp0
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 eth2 (my subnet)
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ppp0.
The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?
How do i disable startup programs in fedora 11.

I'm trying to use iTunes and poker sites on my acer aspire one with linux linpus lite. I've followed previous threads and learned how to add/remove programs and I've downloaded wine. My wine programs show up under 'other' and I have: wine configuration; wine file; wine boot; wine software ininstaller and winhelp (not sure if the last is wine or not) Just can't navigate my way through any of these to find how to actually RUN wine. Also, if you think this is not the best way to fully use poker websites (I'm not happy with the iphone style no download play) or iTunes.

Slack version is 13.37
I've followed alien bobs instructions for a multilib environment from here:[url]
And then used sbopkg to download and compile wine version 1.2.2, which went through just fine.
After that I grabbed cabextract from sbopkg and ran this: wget [url] sh winetricks d3dx9 To get the DX9.
But, when I try to run the game, this is the error I get:

The game it self ran perfectly on the 32 bit version of Slackware, tested with 13.0. So now I think I'm missing some libs or something, but I have no clue which.
I am new to C programming and I need a way to compile and run my code. I've made a little research and I found that eclipse is a nice IDE. But I don't know how to configure it and generally. What do I need to download and install to make it work. I've also tried downloading easy eclipse that doesn't need any configuration or extra files but the link on the site was broken. Is there any other C IDE like easy eclipse available?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhat the most harmful thing can malware program started as separate limited user account do if it has access to the X server? Network and filesystem things are already considered by chroot and netfilter.
It obviously can lock the screen and I will need to switch to other vt and kill it manually. Can it for example disrupt other GUI programs on the same X server (access a root terminal in nearby window)?
I know that it is safer to run it in separate X server, for example, in Xtightvnc or even some virtual machine, but how dangerous is to just run it like other programs?
Our school is setting up a Linux computer lab for students to use. We have Kinetic Books and would like to run it on these computers. The software is java-based. Is it possible to run it under Wine? Are there any general rules-of-thumb for which programs are Wine-compatible?

simple I want to fly my radio controlled helicopter and both programs that configure the radio transmitter so it talks sense to the model are windoze only almost (the wrong driver for the interface cable came with it the driver crashed and scrambled the configuration of the transmitter) the lesson here is XP drivers DO NOT! work with Vis-Stool
One of them will run on .NET (for windoze) and wine (I have no idea of how to install .net for linux ) it just dose not talk to the interface cable witch has a linux kernel module and connects the cable to /dev/ttyUSB0
Is there a way to make /dev/ttyUSB0 show up as a COM4 in wine.
I want to switch over to Unbutu 9.10 and I intend to run some .exe files on it. But to do that I need to install Wine. Unfortunately the only way I found to do that requires being connected to the internet in Unbutu. And I can connect to internet only by pluging in a modem and running executable file afterwards which is something I can't currently do with Unbutu.

View 3 Replies View Relatedusing mint 10, now after updates my system is barely working. The programs were no longer showing in the task bar, and the system was running much slower.
[code]...
This repeated over and over again. My temperature was never to high 40-55, and I found a suggestion to update my kernel to 2.6.37-020637. After doing so there is no longer the thermal limit exceeded error but the computer is still running poorly. The system is slow and again no programs are showing up in the task bar when open.
I sshed to a server a week ago, then ran *screen* and created a few windows in my screen session. I then ran a few programs on those screens. All the programs were running in the background (I run them with &). I did not close or detach from the screen sessions. So I was still connected to those screen sessions from my client machine.
Then, this morning I find my client machine rebooted. When I do screen -ls I find there are no screens available to reattach to. But that is not the worst part. The strange thing is that all my processes (which were running on the server) have disappeared as well, even though they were running in the background. I thought 1) using screen I will be able to re-attach to old screens when my client restarts, 2) If I have sshed to a server and have run programs in the background, restarting the client should not stop those programs (even if I had not used screen).
