Ubuntu :: Disable Internet Access For A Single User

Jan 17, 2011

I have a Lucid Ubuntu installed on my home PC with two user accounts, AmHero and simple. I would like to have all internet access disabled when my kids login with the 'simple' userid. And yes, internet should work when I login using AmHero. I tried this:

[URL]

..but this does not work and gives some errors on the terminal.

I can paste the errors, though I am not sure this will even work as I found this in an old post.

Ubuntu :: Not Allow Multiple Logins To The Shell?

May 20, 2010

Is there a way to prevent a user from being able to login more than once. Not a one-time login, but a single login. What I'm trying to do here is in moving our email system, an email user would login to this account, enter some password information, sync up their email, and have the passwords files removed, then log off. Next user can log in to the same account.

The reason for the single login is to protect the user's passwords.

Fedora :: Multiple SSH Logins With Only One Password?

Dec 30, 2009

I want to login into my main machine from my laptop, sing ssh with several linux consoles, all running mc.Is there any way to only login once with one password, and get several consoles running at the same time? It's a pain to have to ssh and give the same password for each console I want running on the main machine.I've looked at the screen package, but can't seem to get that working. What I'd really like is 3 different terminal sessions, all connected with one password. Each terminal with 3 tabs, all running mc under the same password. So that's 9 different instances of mc running remotely

Red Hat / Fedora :: Multiple Logins At The Boot Screen?

Feb 18, 2010

Is there any method to allow multiple users to login to the main server - something like is allowed in windows ?

I am aware of how to telnet/ssh into the machine, but there are some engineering programs which need to be run on the head node (for some display issue problems on the ssh windows), which locks up the head node for another user who might need to log into the machine for their own work.

where I can set it up to permit multiple users to work at the head node without logging off, and instead allow "switch user" or something of the kind ?

Security :: Detect All User Logins?

May 25, 2011

I would like to detect every login on my server. Not only ssh logins (virtual terminals) but also physical logins. There is a way to use nagios or a script to watch log files. But I would like to know is there a way to catch that information one step before.I thought about watching /dev/pts for changes but that is not different than log watching and everything does not appear in /dev/pts like a ssh tunnel (ssh -N user@server). These are only visible in logs because ssh tunnels do not open terminals. But I would like to be able to catch these on login.

Server :: Samba Not Accepting User Logins?

Feb 23, 2011

I have a samba server that I had setup using the default smbpasswd backend, and it worked fine. So long as I remembered to use smbpasswd/passwd to setup a user with a username and password matching the account name of a Windows 7 user, then that windows 7 user would be able to navigate the shares with their permissions correctly.I have switched over to using ldap, and: the console/ssh of the machine can correctly use any of the ldap logins getent passwd/group both show the complete listing my Windows 7 machines can all ping the samba server by its netbios name my Windows 7 machines all prompt for authentication if I type \MACHINENAME into explorerHowever, all attempts to access the shares now continually ask for you to enter your username/password, and then fails anyway. No errors appear to be generated on the server (unless I'm missing a log somewhere). Having hunted around on the web, I'm wondering if it has to do with generation of machine accounts (since it tries to access from MACHINENAMEUSER). Without ldap setup, I didn't need to worry about the machine name, but I'm thinking that maybe smbpasswd took care of this somehow.I use the smbldap-useradd tool to setup a user account, which appears to correctly setup the user in ldap, such as:

Code:
dn: uid=sharer,ou=Users,dc=intbus,dc=net
objectClass: top

General :: Mapping Sftp/scp As A Drive Letter Without User Logins?

Aug 24, 2011

I'm trying to find a software which could map sftp/scp services to a windows drive letter. I know there are quite a bunch of those available, but i haven't found a single one which could run with SYSTEM or Netservice privileges or have decent command line options so i could elevate the program myself. The mapped drive should be available for other services running on the same server.

Most of the programs (sftp netdrive, expandrive, etc) have only option to startautomatically only when someone logs in. Because of that they are useless to me.Their inability to handle non-interactive starts is a bummer too. FTP->SFTP wrappers don't count as solution despite of integrated windows support for ftp drives. The way they are handled in windows makes ftp mapping unusable without some external ftp drive mapper software.

Ubuntu :: Single USB Install For Use On Multiple PCs?

Jun 29, 2010

I have an Ubuntu install on an 8Gb SDHC Card, customized for my Toshiba NB205. It took quite a bit to get sound and BT working, but now it's fine. Just out of curiousity, I used this same SDHC Card to boot my Dell D610 -- it booted, and sound and WiFi worked fine. I was surprised. There was a single error message after the desktop appeared, but I didn't record it.

I am now wondering: is it practical to use a single USB installation with multiple devices? I can imagine a number of complications, but was surprised that my attempt worked on two very different hardware platforms. There was discussion, when pendrives first appeared, of being able to use one to boot any PC to your own USB-based OS, bypassing any other OS installed on the PC.

General :: Single Process Firefox (Disable Fork)

I would like to run versions of Mozilla Firefox 3.6.5+ as a single process, just as it was in versions 3.6.3 and prior. The reason is that, on Linux, I am running within proxychains - which doesn't bind to forked processes. Because the plugins in versions 3.6.5+ run in a forked process I can't use proxychains to redirect Flash streams. Is there a setting in modern versions of Firefox that allow me to run plugins in the main process?

Ubuntu Networking :: Multiple Devices On Single Network

I've got a co-worker who is trying to connect multiple devices to his wireless router - Xbox, Wii, TV, Dishnetwork box, etc. Not all of the devices are wireless however. He's had several thoughts on how to get this done and I know very little about this kind of thing so I thought I'd ask some of you.

His first thought was to buy a multi port bridge, but he doesn't like any of the ones he's seen so far.The other thought was to connect all of the devices to a switch and then use a single bridge, but he isn't sure if this would work.

Ubuntu Servers :: NFS - Exporting Multiple FS With Single Line?

Jul 26, 2011

I'm using my home server to netboot into live CDs. To summarize that article, netbooting a liveCD system involves passing an NFS host:/path in kernel's command line, which is subsequently mounted as /cdrom on the live system. The article mentions copying the contents of the iso image to a place on the hard drive, but I see no reason for this, since the contents need to be read-only anyway, which is easy to achieve by mounting the iso through a loop device:

Code:

# mount
...
/dev/loop0 on /mnt/kubuntu-lucid-amd64 type iso9660 (ro)
/dev/loop1 on /mnt/kubuntu-natty-amd64 type iso9660 (ro)

[code]....

Now, I am using NFS to mount a regular (rw, HDD) directory which I use as a network drive and I can mount any subdirectory and still access all the files within, ie. when I export /data on the server, I can still mount /data/downloads on the client:

Code:

server:# exportfs
/data 192.168.1.4/32
client:$ sudo mount -t nfs 192.168.1.1:/data/downloads /mnt/netshare

[code]....

Is it possible to export just /mnt and be able to mount any/all of the subdirectories? NFS doesn't like going across multiple file systems:

Code:

server:# ls -al /mnt/kubuntu-natty-i386/
total 3532
dr-xr-xr-x 11 root root 4096 2011-04-27 11:29 .
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 2011-07-25 21:46 ..

[code].....

When I try to export just /mnt and mount /mnt/kubuntu-natty-i386 on the client, the mount succeeds but the mounted directory is empty.

My question is, can I convert all or at least some titles to a single .avi file and if so how?

Fedora Networking :: Multiple IP On Single NIC?

Jan 23, 2011

I've been trying to set multiple IP my Fedora 14 but nothing seems to work. Upon browsing the net, I found there are two ways for it. One is eth0:0~eth0:n nd another is eth0-range0. All are configs under network-scripts. But neither of them worked for me. Even grabbing a working example from my live server doesn't do the trick (though the server is a CentOS 5.5).

Currently using eth0-range0

Ubuntu :: Single Home Partition Access With 10.04 And 11.04 Multiple Distributions

Apr 26, 2011

I've set up a separate Data partition, Creating a separate home partition in Ubuntu during installation Now I wish, if I'm able too, to access this partition of Data with both my 10.04 LTS edition and the new 11.04 Edition of Ubuntu.I tried once, using the methods above, to gain access to that partition, but it just denied me access to the 11.04 installation.I edited the Fstab file in mediaubuntu 11.04etcfstab, and changed back to regain access.* Mount ubuntu 11.04 first to access it*

Am I able to configure my system, that both distributions, can access the same Data partition. If so How would I go about it.I have 2 separate login names for the 2 distributions, but I want to access the same Data partition, folders, using either one. Same programs, games, and e-mail accounts. Also how would I set up Evolution, so that both operating systems use the same e-mail database, saving me from having mail in both, and no idea of where any of it is.I've read numerous posting on this, but either they don't apply, are just too technical, or only relate to 8.04 at best.

For example:

The idea is Mapping all folders to the path /pub/Music in server, so all user can access all music online in the server.

Very Well. How we can do it?

And when pc1 and pc2 have the same subfolder, like Beatles, and in the subfolder have different folders ( PC1-Beatles/Revolver ) (PC2-Beatles/Habbey_Road) or The same folder (PC1-Beatles/The_Mistery_Magic_Tour) (PC3-Beatles/The_Mistery_Magic_Tour)...
