I have a Lucid Ubuntu installed on my home PC with two user accounts, AmHero and simple. I would like to have all internet access disabled when my kids login with the 'simple' userid. And yes, internet should work when I login using AmHero. I tried this:
[URL]
..but this does not work and gives some errors on the terminal.
I can paste the errors, though I am not sure this will even work as I found this in an old post.

I would like to run versions of Mozilla Firefox 3.6.5+ as a single process, just as it was in versions 3.6.3 and prior. The reason is that, on Linux, I am running within proxychains - which doesn't bind to forked processes. Because the plugins in versions 3.6.5+ run in a forked process I can't use proxychains to redirect Flash streams. Is there a setting in modern versions of Firefox that allow me to run plugins in the main process?

When Desktop Effects are enabled in KDE the window for Tecplot 'bleeds' through, as if ~40% transparent in various regions. Disabling desktop effects fixes this, however, I would like to keep them. Is there a way to disable desktop effects on a single window/application?

I'm trying to rip a bunch of DVDs to my HTPC. I'm a bit of a quality fiend, and since I have 2TB of hard drive space, I want to rip straight to raw VOB files (that, and it's WAY faster than transcoding). So far, I've tried several methods:
vobcopy -l -t movie
This DOES create a single file. However, when it is played, the seek is limited to the length of the first VOB file. For instance, one of my movies starts with an 8 second VOB followed by 4 other larger files. When playing, I can only seek within that 8 seconds.
dvdcopy and cat/mpgcat/vobcat
Same issues. Using cat gives seeking issues - limited to the first VOB's length. mpgcat complains that the audio tracks of each VOBs on the disc are of different bitrates, and I have to force the rip. The completed file once again has seek issues.
I'd LIKE to do this from the command line. Also, I am actually ripping ISOs. I originally ripped my DVDs to my drive as complete images, but now I just want the main feature. So, if you have any better ideas with dealing with the raw files, that would be better.

I've seen a lot of documents which use a really beautiful font. This is an example:[url] I mean the font which is used for "Problems", 'The area of a regular...'. Well, I found out that it's somehow called TeX font and I tried to download it. Unfortunately, this is font is separated in many, many files (Italic, Bold, Standard, Italic Bold, Math symbols, other symbols ...). It's horrible, because I would just like to use that font in OpenOffice. I wouldn't like to still change the style by choosing another font. Is there a place where I can download the combined TTF file? So I would just have the bold, italic, math symbols and other symbols in one font without having to choose the different one to just change a style or to enter a copyright sign?

I have an Ubuntu install on an 8Gb SDHC Card, customized for my Toshiba NB205. It took quite a bit to get sound and BT working, but now it's fine. Just out of curiousity, I used this same SDHC Card to boot my Dell D610 -- it booted, and sound and WiFi worked fine. I was surprised. There was a single error message after the desktop appeared, but I didn't record it.
I am now wondering: is it practical to use a single USB installation with multiple devices? I can imagine a number of complications, but was surprised that my attempt worked on two very different hardware platforms. There was discussion, when pendrives first appeared, of being able to use one to boot any PC to your own USB-based OS, bypassing any other OS installed on the PC.

How do I get into Single User Mode in 10.04?
The grub menu seems to be gone in 10.04, and the computer boots in 2 seconds. It's great that it boots fast, but there has to be some way to specify boot options?
/etc/default/grub says the timeout is 10, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I have a quick question that I haven't been able to find an answer for so far. Is it possible to 'hide' a user from the user list in gdm? Note that I don't want to remove it entirely, I just want a user that you can only get into by clicking 'other', entering your name and password.

I'm running mythbuntu on 10.04 with an AMD athlon and nvidia geforce4 (nvidia-96) graphics. Shortly into the boot procedure, the system appears to switch into single user mode, killing all the processes I want running and dropping me into the recovery menu.
On 20 Nov I was having problems booting the system, which I traced to a probably loose sata cable to the (single) hard drive. While working on this I performed a normal system update, and then started having the problem described above. the update included
menu 2.1.43ubuntu1
libc-bin 2.11.1-0ubuntu7.5
plymouth 0.8.2-2ubuntu2.1
grub-pc 1.98-1ubuntu8
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.4
initramfs-tools 0.92bubuntu78
[Code]...

My primary Ubuntu server has SSH exposed to the internet so I can remotely access it. I have configured OpenSSH to use only RSA key authentication. Each computer I use has a separate RSA key unique to it. I also have a unique RSA key on a USB thumb-drive I carry with me. The purpose of the USB key is for emergencies if I have to access the server from some remote system. The problem is that I may not trust the remote machine (university/public library computer for example).
What I would like to do is have a set of one-time use RSA keys that, after I log in to SSH with them, are removed from the authorized_keys file. This would hopefully keep my system safe even if the remote machine I was using was compromised and had copied my private key and key-logged the password I used to decrypt it. I would like to have these keys be separate from the keys I have for my trusted computers.

I currently have a dual boot of Windows Vista and Ubuntu 9.10. I only had Vista purely for playing games, and using certain applications, but recently I decided that I could just configure Wine to work on my system. I was wondering if it was possible to extend the Ubuntu partition as it is over the whole drive, so that I don't lose all my stuff from Ubuntu. Or should I just keep it dual boot, for those few programs that Wine doesn't have quite down? I know this might not have much to do with anything, but I have an NVidia GFX card.

I'm slightly puzzled trying to change the icon on my single "gnome main menu" button. I've added it to a panel and gone to gconf-editor aps>panel and there is no objects folder on my home pc (which is a installed version of 9.10). In work I do the same steps on an install of 8.04 and it works fine. The only difference I can think of is on 8.04. I add the menu to the bottom panel that ubuntu has by default and at home its a panel I've added. I cant get a custom icon for my main menu in 9.10!

I set up SSH on a server running Ubuntu using rsa key authentication. I want to allow a friend of mine to log into the server with restricted access, so I created a user account named "guest" with its own home directory and ensured that it has no root access. I created a new pair of keys and added the public key to my authorized_keys, but when I was testing SSH I noticed that not only could I not log in as guest, I could use the key to log in as my own account and gain root access via sudo. How can I restrict specific private keys to only be able to log in as certain users?
