I have a shared headphone/spdif jack on my ASUS B53J and am running Ubuntu 11.04 Natty. I am not able to get the digital spdif output to work. I have tested the spdif out under Windows 7 and it works perfectly.

I'm trying to get sound from Ubuntu 10.04 out thru the integrated realtek alc850 chipset to my home theatre via the spdif port. I installed the drivers from realtek but still no sound. Under Places-Preferences-Sound, only the IEC958 shows up. What else should I do? Neither Rhythmbox nor Alsa show the Realtec spdif.

I can get audio output on the analog channels but what I'd really like is output on the SPDIF (optical, digital) channel so that I can have better sound quality on my home theater system. What I've tried...-I followed the sound troubleshooting guide.-I tried the 6 stack/3 stack approach suggested on the ALSA website.-Tried compiling and installing the latest version of alsa.-Tried installing the development drivers for alsa that are put out by the ubuntu community.

Ordinary PCM output is passed to the digital receiver witout a problem, but as soon as I try AC3 or DTS it's all silence. I have unmuted the IEC958 channel in alsamixer and added gain to them. Currently using an Asrock ION 330 with an SPDIF output and running 10.04It works as stereo but can't get the system to run as surround sound and everything shows as 2 channels only.The hardware itself supports it fine as it works under windows 7 without issues so it has to be a config issue somewhere.I have tried everything I can find via google including upgrading the alsa drivers but so far there has been no change.

You can see my hardware configuration at the following link.The problem I am facing is trying to output surround audio using the spdif (optical) interface. The system correctly recognizes the integrated sound card (MCP78S High Definition Audio), but fails to offer the option of digital surround output. The only option for digital output is plain stereo. On the other hand it does offer all the analog surround output options.I have tried modifying the /etc/pulse/daemon.conf and specifying it to use 6 channels, but it still uses just 2. And for added grief, it sends one of the channels to the subwoffer instead of the front right channel.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just bought a new PC with an ASUS M4A78-AM motherboard with integrated VT1708S 6-channel sound chip in it, so I freshly installed fedora 12 without any issues However, I can't get the surround sound working. I have searched many forums a lot, and haven't found any solution yet.It seems that even the SPDIF output does not work on this sound card, and that is what people talk about on almost every forum / mail list. So I was unable to find almost ANY information regarding ANALOG surround sound.
The motherboard has 3 jacks on it - green for FRONT / 2 speaker set; blue is the line in OR THE REAR-SPEAKER out, and pink is the microphone OR side speaker out in the 6-spk configuration.My speaker configuration is 4.1 [2 front, 2 back and subwoofer]. Line out does not produce any sound.I have uninstalled pulseaudio [sudo yum remove pulseaudio]Now alsamixer shows a lot of controls, but even if I unmute line out and set it to max, it is still not producing any sound.
Sound comes out of my laptop speakers, but only when hardware is selected as "Analog Stereo". "Digital Stereo" does not function at all. I don't think this is a priority though.
More importantly, my headphones do not have sound unless it is only partway plugged into the headphone jack. However, this does not help as sound is still coming out of my speakers. The instant I plug it all the way in, the sound disappears from both speakers and headphones. I have not tested this with multiple headphones (no access), but these ones work just fine in Windows 7 plugged in all the way.
I have tried an amazing number of things back in '09 when I was running 9.10, but gave up as no one could provide the answer. The threads that are related are:

I am now on a FRESH install of 10.04 Lucid Lynx, so any changes I made in attempt to fix it is gone.
Looking into alsamixer, I found that there is a headphones column, but no bar. It just says it's on. So headphones don't seem to have their own level of volume that's set too low.

Ubuntu seems to see my onboard audio card but I can't select it in the Sound options as my output. In Alsamixer I can adjust settings and have turned on SPIDIF. It's listed when I run the lspci command as

My sound was working, but I got a new SPDIF cable, so I switched it to digital. It worked fine. But then I restarted and now it's gone.

I've setup an HTPC with xbmc, and I'd like to output the audio from the system to both my digital and analog outputs on my mother board. How do I do it? Can their be a script that duplicates the output of one to the other? Here's what aplay -l said:

Alright so I just upgraded my 11.3 x64 to 11.4 using zypper dup and have now lost the ability to play digital output 5.1. Before doing the upgrade I was running alsa rather than phonon but apparently the upgrade decided to enable phonon, and I no longer show digital surround output. The soundcard I have is a CM8738 and I am using the coaxial output on it hooked into my receiver. In system settings->multimedia->phonon->speaker setup the soundcard shows and I have the ability to select different profiles.
However the digital output settings only show stereo and the sound output device the only one listed is CM8738 Digital Stereo (IEC958). I have selections for analog 5.1 and analog 7.1 but neither put anything out of the digital connection. As I said I was running alsa before and was able to do straight digital pass through which allowed my receiver to do the decoding and use all of my channels. How can I setup phonon to use digital passthrough, or switch back to alsa and get that setup again.
I have Gateway P-7807u laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 installed, it has HDMI output and I use it to connect to my TV-set. The problem is - not working sound via HDMI, in sound preferences I've chosen duplex digital output, but no success, but picture works well.

At the moment I have it playing through Analog Stereo Output. (See attached image)
The sound is mostly flawless and I haven't been having troubles with it.
But, because I play audio through my logitech speakers (2 speakers, 1 subwoofer) I should be able to get digital stereo sound shouldn't I?
From the drop down box of the attached image there are two options for Digital Stereo;
Digital Stereo Duplex IEC958
Digital Stereo IEC958 Output + Analog Stereo Input
None of them work for me. Even if I do a restart, I get no sound from Rhythmbox or Firefox.
I use the pulseaudio sound server and I have the PulseAudio device chooser installed. When I had the Digital Stereo Duplex IEC958 selected I used the Volume Meter playback to see if there was any sound coming through. Both left and right showed activity but nothing came through the speakers.
Recently i put a DAC connected to the CL X-FI board via the SPDIF interface. Result is i can listen only one channel, the left one (hedaphone) while using the xmms, audacious.
The thing is that i'm able to listen both channels if i use the VLC configured with the same output, that is hw:2,4.

After some fudging around, I managed to get my 64-bit karmic install to output sound digitally to my amplifier. So far, so good. The amplifier indicates a sample rate of 44.1KHz, while it is capable of 48KHz (higher sample rate would be better, i assume). Also, more annoying, it indicates no signal when no applications are producing sounds, causing it to miss the first second of output when I unpause my music. Windows 7 outputs everything as 48KHz, apparently also outputting silence as the light doesn't blink when i pause a media player.
The question then being: How do I override the default sample rate of digital audio output (if this is even possible, googling suggested that this might be overridden by applications); How do I make my sound driver output silence when no application is outputting sound.

View 7 Replies View RelatedFor no conceivable reason, pulseaudio will no longer output via the spdif connection on my onboard sound card.Up until now, various applications could output digitally (mostly using via the alsa plugin) fine. DVD playback would passthrough DD/dts bitstreams if the application was set to communicate with alsa directly. The sound profile in Ubuntu's audio applet would have to be set to Analog Stereo Output for this to work, no idea why.
Now, all the works is digital passthrough via alsa (i.e DVDs). So definitely not a hardware issue. Regular audio either via the alsa plugin or using pulse directly does not work so no music/system sounds/flash etc. All sliders are unmuted (see pics linked below) and the volume meters all show movement with sound activity. Changing the Profile setting does nothing, I thought maybe it had been fixed so digital actually meant digital.This has happened before (sometimes triggered by DVD playback and DD passthrough) but usually fiddling with the mute toggles fixed it.Possibly this has been caused by a recent update.
I'm running ubuntu 10.04 and suddenly when plugging my cameras or usb sticks, they don't automount anymore, but they did before. What changed is last days I tried to build and install nautilus-sendto manually from source, and it required dependencies including GTK+3.0 (unstable), I don't know what happened exactly or if my system is broken, because some of this packages built and installed fine and others failed. View 1 Replies View RelatedI use ubuntu lucid x86_64 with pulseaudio. There seems to be some issues with how the audio is sent to the sockets. When playing an MKV with surround sound "front" recieves none of the actors voices. it almost sounds like it is the rear sound. Centre/subwoofer sound works correctly. I also get a problem with headphones and front where I cannot mute front and allow only headphones instead I can just mute headphone socket. This is entirely confusing so I hope someone can help me in the right direction.
Hardware: Nvidia 7600 gfx P5QL-EM mobo with 8 channel surround sound audio and hdaudio/ac97 cable which is set to hdaudio on mine in both bios and physically connected cable.

Digital Persona Fingerprint reader is not working on dell 1535. I am using fedora 13 64 bit edition. I have tried using lsusb |grep -i finger but nothing has come up. I have installed all the fprintd packages but still no luck.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI followed the sticky about setting up wireless and I have come to an issue where the WLAN switch which is on this computer can be pressed, the light comes on, but no WLAN. When I looked in dmesg, this is what I get:

Notice it says that the 'Radio is disabled by switch' in dmesg. I can press that switch until the end of the world comes and it does absolutely nothing but make the WLAN light put on a light show. And it shows the wlan to be unassociated with any clients. So, what are my options to get this Wireless up and working?

For months it was perfect. Simultaneous sound from both SPDIF and computer speakers. Today suddenly out of the blue no sound in SPDIF. If I click Test in KDE System Settings for SPDIF devivce that sound is played, so, I tried putting this device at the top, then sound comes only from SPDIF but not from the speakers!
God, why in Linux something perfect breaks into thousand pieces without any seemingly changes...

I'm trying to get AC3/DTS passthrough working with my HTPC in which I'm using the onboard sound from an nForce 4-based motherboard. I've tested it in Win7 to check that all the connections etc are set up correctly and it works perfectly there. However under Kubuntu I can only get 2ch PCM sound to work through the SPDIF connection. Any DTS/DD sources just result in silence.If I go into Multimedia settings in the System Settings panel, the SPDIF device that shows up there (once I enable advanced devices) produces no sound with the Test button. I can hear a click as the device is activated but no sound is produced. I can also see that a digital signal is making it to my receiver as it has an icon which lights up when it locks onto a signal.Has anyone had success with SPDIF passthrough in 9.10? I've tried twiddling all the settings in Kmix relate to IEC and also tried following the Alsa wiki on digital passthrough without any success.
