I am using a fresh install of xubuntu off the official desktop ISO from the xubuntu site. All i have done is install, activate the NVIDIA hardware drivers, reboot, then download and apply the 150 or so updates though the update manager.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cannot Select Digital Stereo Output On Nvidia Audio
Jul 27, 2010I've done a search on google and on here regarding my issue and I couldn't see anything.
I have the following audio device;

00:10.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
At the moment I have it playing through Analog Stereo Output. (See attached image)
The sound is mostly flawless and I haven't been having troubles with it.
But, because I play audio through my logitech speakers (2 speakers, 1 subwoofer) I should be able to get digital stereo sound shouldn't I?
From the drop down box of the attached image there are two options for Digital Stereo;
Digital Stereo Duplex IEC958
Digital Stereo IEC958 Output + Analog Stereo Input
None of them work for me. Even if I do a restart, I get no sound from Rhythmbox or Firefox.
I use the pulseaudio sound server and I have the PulseAudio device chooser installed. When I had the Digital Stereo Duplex IEC958 selected I used the Volume Meter playback to see if there was any sound coming through. Both left and right showed activity but nothing came through the speakers.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Override The Default Sample Rate Of Digital Audio Output?
Apr 12, 2010After some fudging around, I managed to get my 64-bit karmic install to output sound digitally to my amplifier. So far, so good. The amplifier indicates a sample rate of 44.1KHz, while it is capable of 48KHz (higher sample rate would be better, i assume). Also, more annoying, it indicates no signal when no applications are producing sounds, causing it to miss the first second of output when I unpause my music. Windows 7 outputs everything as 48KHz, apparently also outputting silence as the light doesn't blink when i pause a media player.
The question then being: How do I override the default sample rate of digital audio output (if this is even possible, googling suggested that this might be overridden by applications); How do I make my sound driver output silence when no application is outputting sound.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Pulseaudio Digital Out Has Just Stopped Working
Oct 10, 2010For no conceivable reason, pulseaudio will no longer output via the spdif connection on my onboard sound card.Up until now, various applications could output digitally (mostly using via the alsa plugin) fine. DVD playback would passthrough DD/dts bitstreams if the application was set to communicate with alsa directly. The sound profile in Ubuntu's audio applet would have to be set to Analog Stereo Output for this to work, no idea why.
Now, all the works is digital passthrough via alsa (i.e DVDs). So definitely not a hardware issue. Regular audio either via the alsa plugin or using pulse directly does not work so no music/system sounds/flash etc. All sliders are unmuted (see pics linked below) and the volume meters all show movement with sound activity. Changing the Profile setting does nothing, I thought maybe it had been fixed so digital actually meant digital.This has happened before (sometimes triggered by DVD playback and DD passthrough) but usually fiddling with the mute toggles fixed it.Possibly this has been caused by a recent update.
Debian :: SoundMax Integrated Digital Sound - Audio Disappeared
Feb 11, 2010I have been so happy using Debian Lenny. But just lately my sound has disappeared. I have checked the system and apparently it is SoundMax Integrated Digital Sound that I have on board. I have tried lots of things to get it going but to no avail. I have the Debian CD's. Is there a chance that it might be on these and I could re-install it?

Feb 15, 2010Is there a Linux app for mounting and playing audio CDs from image files? I have saved disc images of nearly all of my CD collection, but I have yet to find any convenient way to play them.
Because of the nature of CD audio, every CD image has an accompanying .cue file, so there are actually 2 files (*.iso or *.bin and *.cue) from each disc. VLC Media Player will play DVD .iso images directly, but doesn't know what to do with audio CD images (or the .cue files).
Mounting and unmounting the images at the command line is tedious, given the very long file paths. I'd rather have a GUI-based app. Does any such thing exist for Linux?
FWIW, Acetone ISO doesn't work. It doesn't want to mount my *.iso format CD images. Probably some funkiness of the CD audio format. I think it is what the Acetone devs call a "multi-sector image." Likewise for the *.bin images of CDs.

May 13, 2010I am running 10.04 with an integrated Radeon HD3200 card. When I set up the tv through hdmi, the sound works perfectly; however, when I switch to analog audio to play something else, the next time I try to use hdmi audio I get nothing. It shows to have good level through Pulse Audio Volume Control - shows like there is a sound coming through it, but I get no audio through the tv. The only way I can fix this is by uninstalling proprietary drivers and reverting back to generic configuration and then reinstalling proprietary drivers. I have to revert back to generic in order to get the sound working again.

The video is displayed perfect runs very smooth. This could be my lack of knowledge on ubuntu just not understanding what settings to change maybe no driver for the hdmi audio. I would like to add that the laptop onboard speakers work fine.

Jun 26, 2011I'm having problems configuring chipset VT1708BCE on an Ubuntu 10.04 box. I'm using alsa 1.0.23. First I installed Ubuntu 10.04 (alsa 1.0.21). With this configuration, the audio (front and rear) works. However, none of the microphones (front and rear) work. Then I upgraded alsa to version 1.0.23, and the result was that the rear audio AND MICROPHONE did work, but the front panel (audio and microphone) stopped working.
Below are the results of the alsa-info.sh script. From that I can see (search for "control.20") that the volume on 'Front Mic Boost Capture Volume' is set to 0. I've tried to change the volume using alsamixer and gnome-volume, but none of them seem to work.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Audio CDs Stopped Working With Karmic?
Jan 20, 2010I tried upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic, which borked booting on that partition. I made a fresh install of Karmic on another partition which is booting fine, but I can't get Audio CDs to work, period. They worked in Jaunty and every release before that I had installed. Data CDs work fine in Karmic. I'm using plain ol' Ubuntu 32bit. I'm not sure where to start. There have been other threads where other people had identical symptoms. Either the problem went away mysteriously on its own, or they gave up because nobody believed them. In any case, I'm beginning to wish I had stuck with Jaunty.

Jul 26, 2010I installed Ubuntu 10.04 a few days ago and HDMI audio worked out of the box (with the nVidia drivers enabled). Today I did a system update and (among other problems) there is no more sound coming over HDMI. I'm not really sure what to do to diagnose this problem... where would I start?

Oct 24, 2010I can't get any sound from either online audio or from a CD in drive. I've watched videos with sound with only occasional problems until today. I have been using MPlayer with internal audio 1 output - analog stereo output. When I start a vid, it will begin to D/L and play, but without sound. When I try to check the volume level everything pauses and then my system freezes. Sometimes it will release in a few seconds, but mostly it won't allow me to close Firefox and if I try to close the tab or window or Firefox, I have to reboot. Sometimes the vid will D/L without a problem, but no audio on playback. Oddly, when I bring up the system monitor, processors will show 1 or 2 cores stuck at 100% while the others fluctuate wildly. Download speed falls to almost nothing with occasional blips or nothing. I checked several sites and they all have the same problem. I have checked my physical connections, and bios settings.
There is an option for a RS780 Azalia controller 1 output Digital Stereo (HDMI) output, but I have not been able to make it work since the system was new. I don't know why.
This is the most recent SYSLOG file. The pulse audio errors have always been there, but since it didn't seem to affect playback, I didn't run it down.

May 1, 2010ok, everything worked fine after a fresh 10.04 install, and after some days now i suddenly got several disconnects from the wifi somehow (all other devices in house does not get disconnected, so its a local issue), tried to restart networking, and when i reboot, it works for some hours, then cuts of again. but, after the latest reboot, the sound card is "gone" i suddenly have no sound and a wifi that disconnects at will 13:24 everything worked 110% in all previous ubuntu versions

Nov 10, 2010I just got my new Shuttle SG41J1 v2. Everything works fine under 10.10 except audio. I can hear sound at the headphone-jack on the frontpanel but the jack on the rear isn't working. I tried different models in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (3stack, 5stack, test), nothing helped. All channels in alsamixer are unmuted and the sliders turned up. In the output of alsa-info.sh I can see Nodes for all jacks (Speaker, Mic and Line-In at Ext-Rear for example) but alsamixer and all other mixer-applications I tried shows only Master, PCM, Front Mic, Line, Mic and Aux (all in the Playback section). Also I found nothing in /usr/ share/doc/ alsa-base/driver/HD-Audio-Models.txt.gz about my Codec "IDT ID 76c1".

Feb 14, 2011This is a problem that I have had since Ubuntu 8.04 when the sound on my system stopped working. I have an Intel DG33BU motherboard with audio onboard.
I originally had 7.04 installed on the system (sound worked fine) and did an upgrade to 8.04 for a couple of reasons and found the sound no longer worked.
I have since upgraded to 10.10 and despite trolling various audio threads have yet to get the sound working again. I have noted that when the system boots up there is a quick message (approximately from memory) 9.32.0061: audio codec not found for hda-intel.
Is there a troubleshooting guide or information someone can point me toward as I would like to solve this problem?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Trouble Getting Toshiba Laptop Audio Working Properly
Apr 23, 2010So, help me through getting my audio working properly on my Toshiba Satellite A105-S2081 Laptop. I think I've been through most of the help messages and tried many things to get it working correctly. The ONLY thing that has helped is to go to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and change model=auto to model=generic. (options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N model=generic)
I've tried model=toshiba, model=auto, model=lenovo, model=3stack, model=dallas and the laptops internal sound device disappears from the list of sound devices. If I plug in my Logitech Headset, it seems to work fine.It also seems to work fine if I boot it up into XP SP3.It does work now generally with model=generic, but not sure that everything works properly, like the headset & microphone jack. (Actually the reason I have the Logitech Headset is because the headset jack doesn't work).

Mar 18, 2011My Compaq Presario F739WM laptop has a Connexant HD Audio/NVidia MCP51 (reported by lspci) sound card.Ubuntu has always supported the card with no problem except the random popping noise but then I found a work around for that.Now for some reason, when I first turn on my computer and at login screen I can hear Ubuntu noises, yet seems once I login, no more sound or sometimes the successfully logged in sound.
The only changes that I have since the sound worked, was I installed pulseaudio but that caused no problems with that. The other change was a few kernel upgrades and other packages through normal update manager.I have checked that snd_hda_intel driver was loaded in the kernel and in alsa, all seems well.Pulse detects audio output in it's meter.I also tested the sound card to make sure it wasn't bad, in Windows 7 (dual boot) and it wokrs perfectly.
OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Flash Working Videos But No Audio
Mar 6, 2011I've been playing around with the latest RC of 11.4. Overall, it works great, but just have 1 issue. No flash videos have audio. Video works just fine. I've tried installing both the flash-player package so that it loads the official 32-bit plugin through ndiswrapper, and tried downloading the Adobe Square 64-bit plugin and installing it. Doesn't make a difference, either way I have working video but not audio. Audio itself on the laptop works with no issues, I listen to Amarok all the time on it. Laptop in question is a Dell Latitude E5500. I've also had Debian Wheezy and Kubuntu 10.10 on here, both had no issues.
