I can get 5.1 surround by using the plug:surround51 device.

Have gone though other guides trying to fix the problem but no luck. how to get the digital stuff working. I have included some outputs.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Get Sound To Loop From Digital Input On Soundcard To Analog Speakers?

Nov 23, 2010

Alright, just installed maverick, got the sound to work great on the 7.1 with pulseaudio. works great in movies, and everything else just wonderfully. the only thing i am stumped by is how to get the sound to loop from my digital input on my soundcard to my analog speakers also on the same soundcard. i know the sound feed works on the input as the makeshift VU meter/bar on my digital input in the sound preferences moves, but i can't get the sound to actually come through on my speakers.

General :: MCP61 Audio - KDE4 Only Recognized The Output Device As ALC1200 Analog

Dec 26, 2010

I finally decided to transition to a 64-bit install (AMD64). (same machine, just reinstalling as a 64-bit kernel starting w/ a Debian squeeze netinstall image) My audio chipset is nvidia MCP61, and it was working perfectly under a 32-bit kernel (I did the transition because a poorly-written system backup script (my fault) hosed /usr, /bin, and /sbin) When everything was up and running:

*: KDE4 only recognized the output device as ALC1200 Analog
*: kmix only had a single channel(master)
*: alsamixergui did recognize all the channels
*: some games (sauerbraten, for example) had no sound in KDE4.
*: some games (warzone2100, for example) did have sound in KDE4.
*: the games that had no sound in KDE4 did have sound in fluxbox.

I removed the following packages (some of which I had installed to try to get audio working properly):

Ubuntu Multimedia :: PulseAudio Lag With Simultaneous Output

Jul 1, 2011

I've got two soundcards in my new machine - Realtek ALC8892 onboard, with headphones plugged in, and an M-Audio Audiophile 192 with speakers. There's also HDMI sound out on the graphics card, but I don't use that.

Audio with PulseAudio's output through the sound card is fine. Audio with PulseAudio's output through the onboard sound is fine. If I set the output to Simultaneous Output, however, I get significant lag. Almost half a second. It's quite distracting.

Is this just a problem with PulseAudio's simultaneous output implementation, or is there a fix that I've overlooked? Running 64-bit Natty, btw.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Pulseaudio Disabling Simultaneous Output?

Mar 16, 2010

sat in an internet cafe with my music on loud using my headphones when my cell phone vibrated and upon taking off my headphones I noticed that pulseaudio was channeling all my music not only to my headphones but also to my regular monitor out!

So I was actually listening to music using my headphones when in fact the sound was LOUD on my laptop speakers...

Is there a way to configure the thing to not do that? I want the sound to be muted as soon as I plug in my headphones.

Ubuntu :: Sound Does Not Come Out Of Headphones No Digital Output?

Sep 29, 2010

Sound comes out of my laptop speakers, but only when hardware is selected as "Analog Stereo". "Digital Stereo" does not function at all. I don't think this is a priority though.

More importantly, my headphones do not have sound unless it is only partway plugged into the headphone jack. However, this does not help as sound is still coming out of my speakers. The instant I plug it all the way in, the sound disappears from both speakers and headphones. I have not tested this with multiple headphones (no access), but these ones work just fine in Windows 7 plugged in all the way.

I have tried an amazing number of things back in '09 when I was running 9.10, but gave up as no one could provide the answer. The threads that are related are:
[URL] (Don't worry about read-only file stuff, that is all resolved) [URL]

I am now on a FRESH install of 10.04 Lucid Lynx, so any changes I made in attempt to fix it is gone.

Looking into alsamixer, I found that there is a headphones column, but no bar. It just says it's on. So headphones don't seem to have their own level of volume that's set too low.

Here are some outputs: lcat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec:

Code:
Codec: Realtek ALC663
Codec: Nvidia MCP78 HDMI

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: 11.4 - Lost Digital Surround Output

Mar 10, 2011

Alright so I just upgraded my 11.3 x64 to 11.4 using zypper dup and have now lost the ability to play digital output 5.1. Before doing the upgrade I was running alsa rather than phonon but apparently the upgrade decided to enable phonon, and I no longer show digital surround output. The soundcard I have is a CM8738 and I am using the coaxial output on it hooked into my receiver. In system settings->multimedia->phonon->speaker setup the soundcard shows and I have the ability to select different profiles.

However the digital output settings only show stereo and the sound output device the only one listed is CM8738 Digital Stereo (IEC958). I have selections for analog 5.1 and analog 7.1 but neither put anything out of the digital connection. As I said I was running alsa before and was able to do straight digital pass through which allowed my receiver to do the decoding and use all of my channels. How can I setup phonon to use digital passthrough, or switch back to alsa and get that setup again.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cannot Select Digital Stereo Output On Nvidia Audio

Jul 27, 2010

I've done a search on google and on here regarding my issue and I couldn't see anything.

I have the following audio device;

Code:
00:10.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
At the moment I have it playing through Analog Stereo Output. (See attached image)

The sound is mostly flawless and I haven't been having troubles with it.

But, because I play audio through my logitech speakers (2 speakers, 1 subwoofer) I should be able to get digital stereo sound shouldn't I?

From the drop down box of the attached image there are two options for Digital Stereo;

Digital Stereo Duplex IEC958
Digital Stereo IEC958 Output + Analog Stereo Input

None of them work for me. Even if I do a restart, I get no sound from Rhythmbox or Firefox.

I use the pulseaudio sound server and I have the PulseAudio device chooser installed. When I had the Digital Stereo Duplex IEC958 selected I used the Volume Meter playback to see if there was any sound coming through. Both left and right showed activity but nothing came through the speakers.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Override The Default Sample Rate Of Digital Audio Output?

Apr 12, 2010

After some fudging around, I managed to get my 64-bit karmic install to output sound digitally to my amplifier. So far, so good. The amplifier indicates a sample rate of 44.1KHz, while it is capable of 48KHz (higher sample rate would be better, i assume). Also, more annoying, it indicates no signal when no applications are producing sounds, causing it to miss the first second of output when I unpause my music. Windows 7 outputs everything as 48KHz, apparently also outputting silence as the light doesn't blink when i pause a media player.

The question then being: How do I override the default sample rate of digital audio output (if this is even possible, googling suggested that this might be overridden by applications); How do I make my sound driver output silence when no application is outputting sound.

Additional info:
- Ubuntu Karmic x64 (dist-upgraded from jaunty)
- Exaile media player with Normal playback engine and Automatic audio sink
- Asus P5Q-E motherboard
- Philips DFA888 amplifier

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Output One Playback Stream To Multiple Devices Simultaneously With The Current PulseAudio / Phonon Setup?

Jun 9, 2011

Is it possible to output one playback stream to multiple devices simultaneously with the current PulseAudio / Phonon setup? The PulseAudio mixer only has radio buttons to choose one device per playback stream. I believe the hardware is capable of this, since I remember doing that before we had PulseAudio. How can I duplicate an audio stream?

Here's one application scenario: I am travelling with my family, all crammed in small hotel room. My wife and me want to watch a movie on my laptop without waking up our kids. I just happen to have one analogue headphone available and one wireless USB headset with me. (Of course, the low tech solution is to bring an 3,5mm Y-cable to attach two analogue headsets, but I would really love to use the USB headset together with the analogue one.)

Another similar thing that bugs me is that my laptop's built-in speakers now always seem dead when an analogue headphone is plugged in. This is mostly what one wants, and before PulseAudio, one had to manually switch them off which was generally annoying. However, the downside is for example with notifications.

For example, before PulseAudio, I could configure Skype to always ring over the laptop's built-in speakers, regardless of whether the analogue headphones were plugged in. This is no longer possible, since PulseAudio does not distinguish between built-in speakers and built-in analogue port any more, while old Alsa did. So in my office, where some analogue headphones are plugged into the docking station, I never hear Skype ringing if I don't wear the headphones.

General :: Simultaneous Multithreading Support?

Jul 15, 2010

I was looking around on Wikipedia, and ran across the UltraSPARC T2 processor. This is a processor with 8 cores (8 physical processors) and 8 threads per core (64 logical processors!)I'm aware of Intel's Hyper-Threading and other technologies, and I know collisions between the threads have the possibility of decreasing the processor's throughput. From what I know, the O(1) scheduler (and surely the current CFS scheduler) is aware of Hyper-Threading, and is careful with processor affinity for threads (mainly, it tries to fill every physical processor before giving any multiple threads, and it tries to keep processes that much move between logical processors on the same physical processor.)

However, although that certainly helps somewhat, I believe the largest gain can come if the compiler is allowed to re-arrange instructions, so that more than two threads can be run at once without collisions in one physical processor. For this to happen, I believe we'd need to come up with a new executable format that can store multiple threads in one file, so the scheduler can schedule them as one block. For example, with the current scheduler and executable formats, the UltraSPARC would appear as 64 logical processors. However, if we consider a system that consists entirely of thread-aware systems, it might look at it as 8 logical processors, and schedule eight processes at a time. Since only one process would exist on each physical processor, the compiler would be able to optimize and significantly reduce resource contention (which I mention below.)

We can look at one physical processor with 8 threads of execution (or any number >2.) If you run 8 different processes, as Linux would currently do, there would likely be a lot of resource contention. My guess is that most of the time, several threads would be waiting for the unit they need to become available. I feel that this is supported because I saw a number from Sun (I forgot where) that the correct optimization settings on their compiler can yield a 300% speedup, on a practical workload. Is there any infrastructure available for Linux that supports processors like the UltraSPARC T2, that have a high number of hardware threads per core? Also, I know this would be a large task to implement, and there would be hurdles (how do you mix multithreaded processes with single-threaded processes on one machine?), and I am wondering if others think there would be enough benefit to justify the effort.

General :: Allowing Multiple Simultaneous Rsyncs To Play Nice Together?

Jun 1, 2011

Each day I need to copy N files from a source location to a mirror at a specific time (where N is very large). Let's say I tell multiple CPUs to each run an rsync simultaneously on a subset of the files (network and disk bandwidth are not an issue). Ideally each CPU would be responsible for a disjoint subset of the N files, but in practice this is sometimes hard to guarantee. (Some of the source files might be "claimed" by more than one CPU.) As a result, sometimes rsync I and rsync J will both try to copy file F at the same time.

Using rsync -avz --delete --temp-dir=/tmp remote:/path/to/source/ /path/to/dest/, let's say rsyncs I and J both see this situation to start:

[Code]...

Now rsync J finishes copying but generates an error when it tries to move its version of FileB to /path/to/dest/ because there's already another FileB there that it didn't see when it started.

Does one of rsync's many options somehow handle this situation? Ideally I'd like an option that tells rsync, "Believe in yourself. You can do no wrong. Feel free to overwrite anything your little heart desires." so that it wouldn't complain about the FileB that has suddenly appeared mid-execution

In a matter of few minutes, there are like 15-20 instances of the browser opened.

I reinstalled the OS, but it is happening again and again. Is there some flaw in OS, something related to OS not compatible with my computer or some problem with the keyboard where some key(combination) is in a "press" mode (however, I dont see that happening on Laptop, the keyboard looks fine, plus Windows XP is working just fine).

This problem is forcing me to spend a larger time on Windows (which is bit cringy, after you get used to Ubuntu!).
