Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Empty Desktop After Compiz Reset?

May 2, 2011

As implied in the title, in compizconfig I went to Preferences, and under Profile, while unity was selected, hit the "Reset to defaults" button.The desktop went all fuzzy so I restarted, and when boot finished, I was left with my desktop background and nothing else - None of the tool bars, menu, sidebar... All gone.Recovery loads fine but with the 10.XX version look.What happened and how do I undo it?

Ubuntu :: Compiz Settings Are Reset Every Session?

Oct 9, 2010

Since a while ago, any changes I make to my Compiz settings are not remembered when I log in again.

On starting a new gnome session, Compiz is firstly always disabled ("Visual Effects" in gnome-appearance-properties is set to "None"). I can enable the "Extra" option, but when I open gnome-appearance-properties a second time, the option is not selected (although Compiz will now be running), and when I log out and back in, Compiz will be disabled again.

After enabling it manually, I find that secondly, the "Desktop Cube" largedesktop feature is replaced by "Desktop Wall". I can change this in ccsm, and the changes take effect immediately, but when I start ccsm a second time, the changes are gone (the "Desktop Cube" checkbox is unselected). After logging out and back in, the old settings are in effect again.

Since ccsm will forget the changes even before I log out, I suspect it is somehow unable to save them. I've tried looking at the stderr output of gnome-appearance-properties and ccsm, but haven't seen anything that looks relevant.

General :: How To Reset Compiz Mess Up

Mar 29, 2010

I've played around with some themes, installed, activated and deactivated the emerald theme manager, etc. (I'm tired and did a lot of stuff). Now several things aren't alright:

- I've chosen to initiate the windows-switch-thing with mouse button 2. It dowsn't work anymore.

- The transparent background of my temrinal is too transparent - meaning: It always shows the desktop picture

- I've assigned all my media players to workspace 4 - it doesn't work anymore

Is there a way to just reset compiz to its original settings? PS: I know the informations I've given are kind of vague, but I'm too tired to do more. It's Ubuntu 9.1 and I'm using Gnome, not KDE.

My husband has been using Ubuntu just about forever now. He just upgraded to the newest version but has been having problems. He tried to do a regular upgrade and after it installed his screen had wallpaper and that's it. No icons or task bar or anything. He decided to do a clean install to see if that would help, and it's still that way.

Ubuntu :: Empty Desktop In Natty ?

Jun 14, 2011

I installed Natty in a VirtualBox VM (running in XP), and all I see is an empty Desktop with background. No Launcher or anything else to run anything.

It is obviously running, because I can right click on the desktop, create a folder and navigate round. If I navigate to an application I can run it.

Rebooting to Classic works (if maybe a little slower than 10.10).

I wanted to try Unity, and assume it is trying to run.

Ubuntu :: Nvidia Updates - Empty Desktop ?

Jan 29, 2011

Ubuntu 10.04, gnome, nvidia 7000 series card. Recent kernel and nvidia updates caused this situation. I boot to a login selector,like normal. When I login I get my bootup sound and background, but no panels. Right clicking does nothing. I booted up a puppylinux cd, deleted xorg.conf, and can now get to a working desktop. I have, through the additional drivers utility, deleted and reinstalled nvidia current driver. Twice. No change. Windows XP (On another hard drive) works well, so it's not a card problem.

Ubuntu :: Empty Trash Command For Files (Desktop Recycle Bin)

Aug 28, 2010

I mount /home on a logical partition. Files and directories that I trash from here go nicely into the recycle bin, and I can right click on it and choose "Empty Trash" with no problem. Files off of the root directory in directories that I "own" (i.e. /mydir/*) do not play as nicely. I went ahead and followed instructions from another post, namely:

Code:
sudo mkdir /.Trash
sudo chmod 1777 /.Trash

And after trashing some files from /mydir, there is indeed a subdirectory with my uid (1000) and files that I trash from /mydir are going in there. However, the recycle bin on my desktop remains empty, and the only method I have for deleting said files is by deleting them from the /.Trash/1000 folders through the command line. So my question is: Is there anyway that I can trash files from /mydir, see them appear on the desktop recycle bin, and empty the trash without the need to rm them directly through the command line? Not sure if it will help, but here is my fstab:

Code:
# / was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=4129f389-92be-459e-8bbc-928c1440f718 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /home was on /dev/sda6 during installation
UUID=6a30914d-04a3-4b03-85bd-2bf16a68a41a /home ext4 defaults 0 2
# swap was on /dev/sda5 during installation
UUID=f388cf04-bbd6-4bf9-9d69-0778b0f158fd none swap sw 0 0

Fedora :: How To Reset Gnome Desktop

Oct 24, 2009

I created a separate /home partition to share between F10 and F11. And, of course, the gnome settings conflict. I really don't need to go back to F10 and when I install F12 over it I will omit including the separate /home directory during the install set up and that will force F12 to create the /home Dir on the same file system. So, to clear up gnome settings for now, is the only way mean deleting the .gconf, .gnome* directories? This was recommended in another post back a few years ago.

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 and all was working ok till today. I am not sure if it was because of a new update(manager)or maybe another reason, but i get a purple screen and a unresponsive window from a alarm clock app and thats it. This occures when I login onto Classic Ubuntu and Safe mode, the main Ubuntu (Unity) is working fine.

I did use Ubuntu Classic since install and was running fine. Now the screen is purple and cant even shut of the PC with the powerbutton. I can still get into terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1 and that about it... I had Dock installed,task bar... all is gone, even the background picture changed.

I'm a bit new to all this so not sure if I'm doing something wrong.I've looked at many threads regarding this problem and nothing they say has worked. iv tried using Hardware Drivers (in systems administration) but this says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system".

Also I don't know whether this effects anything but when I open NVIDIA X Server Settings (in systems administration) i get a message saying "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."Does anyone know how I can get Compiz/desktop effects working?.

Ubuntu :: While Testing Compiz - It Broke Desktop

May 19, 2011

Today, after some testing with compiz in my PC, I ended up uninstalling it again, because the video card didn't have the right specs. So when I rebooted, my desktop started acting weird - the applications' top panels disappeared, they couldn't be moved around, no more usable workspaces, etc ... also the mouse pointer keeps on rotating indefinitely, making my OS practically unusable. So is there any hope I can restore my desktop to its previous state, or do I have to do a full reinstall, which I'd like to avoid if possible ?

Using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, 64 bit, Gnome.
