Ubuntu :: Compiled Freetype From Source Most Of Fonts Look Awful Auto Hinter Prob?
Nov 24, 2010
I'm a compiling noob, but one who can follow well-written directions. I was led to believe that I needed to compile an updated version of freetype to satisfy some build dependencies in Wine, which I also needed to compile to be able to use a custom patch. So now my fonts look awful. I read the directions that came with the freetype source code, and one thing I didn't configure properly was the auto-hinter, which I believe to be the problem (although that's just an educated guess), since the documentation lacked the necessary docs.
how do I go back to stonking great fonts? I'd rather keep the new version of freetype, if someone could tell me how to properly configure it to display fonts correctly.

My iceweasel version iceweasel:
Here are two screenshot of a Wikipedia page (modified via readability). My serif font is Liberation Serif.
Here is the same font in Open Office Writer
And here it is in KWrite
To me, the last two look all right-- at least all the lower case glyphs are the same height. So why does the font look so terrible in iceweasel?

I have recently installed a dev branch of Postfix on my box (jaunty), in order to access some new features. This requires that I do not use any of the postfix-related packages in the repos, I have to set this all up manually.
What is the best method for me to manage this system moving forward? Do I need to prevent the repo's postfix package (or anything depending on it, like postfix-mysql, postfix-dovecot etc.) from ever being installed accidentally? Is there anything else I need to worry about? How do you folks generally manage having compiled, customized versions of software that exists in the repos on your systems?

I have installed two softwares manually, from the source code downloaded from their official websites: Stellarium, and the Linux Kernel. The version of these is not the same as the one found in the official repos. My question is: does aptitude have knowledge of the existance of these softwares? Can it do any damage to them, in case, for example, I run automatic aptitude tasks, such as autoclean and dist-upgrade?

I am trying out Zenwalk Linux and so far love it. I have had to compile a couple of bits of software from source and don't know how I would update them when a new version comes out.The options are:1. Compile the new version and hope it overwrites the old one2.Uninstall the old version and compile the new.Option 2 feels safer but how do I uninstall a bit of software installed by compiling?

I just have a short simple question. I download yukon a opengl Video capture software and tried to install it and I got it installed but I can't get it to function right. So figured I would uninstall it and ran "make uninstall" in the source and it gave me an error that is has nothing to do.
So this is my questions
if I did
Code:
$whereis yukon
#rm -rf /etc/yukon /usr/bin/yukon (and the rest of the direcories listed)
Would that work fine? for removing it from my system.

I've compiled HandBrake 0.9.4 from source as well as installed it with success(--enable-Gtk). However, many buttons (among them the 'Start' and the 'Pause' ones) do not seem to work at all-they are colored grey and I cannot click on them.Probably,it's a gui malfunction.

Does anyone else know of a terminal emulator that scales the fonts automatically when a window is resized?
My eyesight is horrible but I want to use more terminal applications. I also use AwesomeWM for tiling, so windows resize frequently. Also on the short list are cut/paste by keyboard and good support for launching links.

So, I never got great battery life with 9.04 or 9.10, but it was acceptable. Here's the thing, with Windows 7 I can get about two hours. With Ubuntu I'm lucky if I get an hour, and I mean really lucky. I have selected to dim the brightness and to spin down the HDD when possible, it hasn't helped a whole lot. What I don't see is an option to underclock the CPU, which is done rather easily in Kubuntu.

I'm using 10.10 ubuntu @ Aser Aspire one D250. I had some issues with black screen booting (plymouth) and I fixed them with this:
Code:
sudo su
echo FRAMEBUFFER=y > /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
update-initramfs -u
exit
It's fixed and ok when I'm on AC Adapter only. When my laptop booting from battery the problem with black boot screen remains. Why? Is there another option for graphics or plymouth when the AC Adapter is plugged?

I got this message today after cleaning out the inside of my computer. Didn't really mess with anything. Booted into Windows XP just fine, had to restart for an update. Burg loaded, I selected Windows and I get:
"NTLDR is missing. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart." WTF? Windows breaks itself. Great. My ubuntu install works just fine. I have 2 separate hard drives, with one OS on each. I can't access the other drive from ubuntu. It says
Unable to mount location Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: Index entry out of bounds in directory inode 5. Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details.

I've been desperate to successfully install Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire 1714SMi (old and huge, I know), but the display suffers from a greatly reduced color range, strange white haze/ fine vertical lines and virtually ilegible text. I took a screen shot as I know it's hard to describe these things, but it looks normal on the image! The Graphics Driver is nVIDIA GeForce FX Go5700 128MB. The display is perfect on XP.
I downloaded some NVidia Drivers for Linux from nVidia & from here: [URL] Can't get any of them to work, and I find it hard to believe it's so difficult to get a basic display to work. I'm about to give up.

I love openSUSE, but I hate its default font rendering. On openSUSE 11.3, I am obtaining good results with the SubpixelHinting - openSUSE Community Wiki together with [url]. However, the previous repo doesn't have packages for 11.4. I know that there are some personal packages in the build service, but soon after the 11.3 release they pulled these personal packages because they might violate a patent. So where is a reliable, easy source for installing the best libraries for smooth fonts with subpixel hinting?

when i try to compile LMMS, I get this error:
CMake Error: Freetype_DIR is not set. It must be set to the directory containing FreetypeConfig.cmake in order to use Freetype.
there is no file on my machine named that or any lowercase/uppercase combinations thereof.
here is the full spit out:
[jayjay@localhost lmms-0.4.5]$ cd build
[jayjay@localhost build]$ make
PROCESSOR: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
Machine: i586-mandriva-linux-gnu
-- Target host is 32 bit
-- Found Qt-Version 4.3.3
code....
i looked at version 2010 RPM file lists, still no FreeTypeConfig.cmake.
I even built cmake 2.8 from cmake's SF page, it has FindFreetype.cmake, but not FreeTypeConfig.cmake.
What can I do?

The font settings are all serif and sans serif in both the system fonts settings and firefox settings.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.
Any idea why this could be happening?

I have a folder with over 1500 fonts, I would like to move them to my /usr/share/fonts folder so that they can be used. Some are from Windows, some are just random extras. I've installed the msttcorefonts, but there are quite a few missing that make some wen pages look different.
How can I go about putting the fonts from my folder, into the appropriate /usr/share/fonts folder to be used? And how can I move them all? I can't drag and drop them, and mv FONT_NAME /usr/share/fonts for all of them will take a month or two. Is there a way to elevate my self to be able to just drag and drop them all? And which folder would they need to go into for them to be used in Chrome and Firefox?

I have just installed openSUSE 11.2 X86_64 on my laptop, I then used KDE to install lots of type 1 fonts for my printer. These get loaded to /usr/local/share/fonts/...These installed fonts are visible to KDE (KWRITE) and GIMP so I assume that the installation was O.K. When I start openOFFICE writer I do not see these fonts. The font selection appears to be the fonts located under /usr/share/fonts. I have not tried other ooo3 components. I assume that they are not going to see the fonts either.
I have searched google and it appears that /usr/local/share/fonts is the correct location for non-packaged fonts. Has anybody any idea what is wrong? I think I could move all the fonts to /usr/share/fonts and ooo3 would work but this seems to break the installation directory structure. I have considered symlinks but I don't like the idea of defining a font twice to Linux and creating the syslinks is more work than reinstalling the fonts if they are lost

I recently installed 32bit maverick and wanted to make it login automatically. I tried enabling auto login from Admin > Login but that didnt work and I was still prompted for my password. Then I went to Users & Groups and changed the password option to Do Not ask for password at login now after I reboot, the user list is shown (only 1 user) and it doesnt ask for password after I click on my username.
However, then it gives a few errors (as i vaguely recall):
1. cannot load .ICE directory in my home directory
2. some error 256 about a gconf-sanity-2 file
3. nautilus cannot load my home directory etc
and then it gets stuck without loading anything (blank wallpaper). i ve tried navigating to my home directory using Alt F2, gksudo nautilus and my home dir contents are encrypted by the ecryptfs (there is a readme.txt file and a shortcut). i have tried to decrypt but it doesnt work... i ve also tried to start/stop gdm, and startx but nothing works. if i stop gdm, then the prompt doesnt recognize my password and keeps on rejecting the commands i enter... I think this has something to do with the home dir not being decrypted due to the dont ask for paswd option... how can i disable the dont ask for pwd without the gui (i can access my / by booting through an external usb).

I would like to exec a script whenever a user mount a device. The device could be an internal device (for example a partition on a second hard disk) or a removable one (for example a usb hard disk). The script must have sudo capabilities even if the user is not included in the admin group. Is it possible?
The specific question:
I would like to add acl option to a device whenever it is mounted.
I tried fstab but it's changing the behaviour of nautilus see:
[URL]... so I would like to create a script with the command
Code:
sudo mount -o remount,acl /media/data
and auto execute it any time data is mounted.

I have noticed that a common issue to several distros is the fact that the networking subsystem doesn't automatically detect the link if an ethernet connection is disconnected and then re-connected to the NIC after boot. If the ethernet cable is connected after the system is up and running, nothing happens - ethtool eth0 shows link detected: no, and you have to restart the network service to let the NIC know that there is in fact a link, and actually connect. I have a Fedora14 (KDE) box with a brand new Asus motherboard with embedded NIC. Everything works great except the auto-detect of a freshly connected ethernet connection if the link is down to begin with.
Am I missing a ethernet link sentinel utility or something, or is this just the way linux works? I have done plenty of research on plenty of posts, and it seems this is a common problem, with no solution other than manually or programatically restarting the network service in a script to detect the link after a disconnect.

I press On-button, Debian boots, logs in and automatically connects to the Wireless network AND! to my local pc via LAN. It runs an ssh server, so I can ssh into debian over internet and communicate with the local pc (send a magic packet). Here are my problems:
1) I don't how to log in automatically. This and this doesn't work.
2) I need a network tool that can manage multiple connections and has a reconnect feature. With the default network manager I cannot even connect to more than one network simultaneously although I have two network devices of course.
And I guess I can run all that in console mode, right?
