Debian :: Compiled Source Code And Aptitude?

Jul 11, 2011

I have installed two softwares manually, from the source code downloaded from their official websites: Stellarium, and the Linux Kernel. The version of these is not the same as the one found in the official repos. My question is: does aptitude have knowledge of the existance of these softwares? Can it do any damage to them, in case, for example, I run automatic aptitude tasks, such as autoclean and dist-upgrade?

Debian Installation :: Aptitude Update And Aptitude Install Aptitude?

Jul 11, 2010

I am trying to upgrade an amd64 lenny system to squeeze.I've got a 2.6.32 kernel running, done aptitude update and aptitude install aptitude. When I try "aptitude safe-upgrade", it sits forever resolving dependencies.it seems to search with the resolver counting up more and more open/conflict/ whatever.I stopped it once it got over 100,000)Is it possible to get aptitude to do a safe-upgrade, perhaps using a command line option?

Debian Configuration :: Dropbox Install For Debian Squeeze From Source Code

how to install Dropbox for Debian Squeeze from source. Please read everything before you begin. I prepared it as I installed Dropbox for my own system. Please Note: I use sudo, you may have to use root or 'su' from the command line. If you don't know the difference between sudo and su, then you shouldn't try this until you know. At the time I did this, the lastest dropbox version was 0.6.7.

$ apt-get source packagename

This will download three files: a .orig.tar.gz, a .dsc and a .diff.gz. In the case of packages made specifically for Debian, the last of these is not downloaded and the first usually won't have "orig" in the name. The .dsc file is used by dpkg-source for unpacking the source package into the directory packagename-version.

Debian :: Obtaining The Source Code Of A Package?

Sep 3, 2010

I want to compile geki2 from source. I tried apt-get source geki2but I getReading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to find a source package for geki2I assume that /etc/apt/sources.list needs some additional entry. I run lenny.

Apart from that could someone explain to me what is the importance of files *.dsc , *.tar.gz and *.diff.gz in every package ? I assume *.tar.gz is the source. Is this independent from Debian ? I assume also that *.diff.gz is some patch you have to apply after you expand *.tar.gz in order to get a Debian specific version but how do you apply the patch ?

Ubuntu :: Can't Run Compiled Code

Jan 12, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 9.10. If I compile a 'hello world' C file using the terminal, something like:

gcc hello.c -o hello

the compile seems to work fine, and the executable file 'hello' appears in the directory.

However, when I try to run 'hello' from the terminal, I get something like the following:

No command 'hello' found, did you mean: .......

If I run dir, though, I can see 'hello' is there. I also can't run code I compiled when I was running 9.04. The OS again can't seem to find the executable file.

Everything worked fine with version 9.04. I could compile and run without any problems. Is there some setting I have to change to allow the OS to run my code?

Fedora :: Uninstall Self-compiled Tcl / Tk Code?

Jun 18, 2010

I am running fedora 12. I had could nor locate the Tcl/Tk on the system, so I had to download, compile and intstall the raw the raw tar balls. That is now causing some problems and I want to revert to the Fedora Tcl/Tk and reinstall it using yum as the self compiled code may not be well integrated with fedora. The make file gives no room for an un-install. I appreciate any ideas on how to go about the un-installation. Secondly the fedora system is running gnome, how may I switch to KDE instead?

General :: Remove Software Compiled From Source?

Jan 18, 2011

I just have a short simple question. I download yukon a opengl Video capture software and tried to install it and I got it installed but I can't get it to function right. So figured I would uninstall it and ran "make uninstall" in the source and it gave me an error that is has nothing to do.

So this is my questions
if I did

Code:
$whereis yukon
#rm -rf /etc/yukon /usr/bin/yukon (and the rest of the direcories listed)
Would that work fine? for removing it from my system.

Software :: Link Gfortran Compiled Code With Lapack And Arpack Libraries?

Jun 27, 2009

In mandriva 2008 platform I have installed gcc-g77, liblapack, liblapack-devel, libblas, libblas-devel, arpack, arpack-devel and arpack-static packages. When I link *.f code and these libraries, using g77 compiler with -llapack -lblas -larpack options, everything work. Then when I replaced g77 by gfortran compiler, to be able to work with double precision complex arithmetic, I have got a number of undefined references errors:

[code].....

It looks as if I need to install f95 lapack and arpack libraries. Does anybody know if such rpm packages exist? I cannot find them in the net. If they exist, where is it possible to download them?

Ubuntu Installation :: Coexisting Packages And Compiled-from-source?

May 20, 2010

I have recently installed a dev branch of Postfix on my box (jaunty), in order to access some new features. This requires that I do not use any of the postfix-related packages in the repos, I have to set this all up manually.

What is the best method for me to manage this system moving forward? Do I need to prevent the repo's postfix package (or anything depending on it, like postfix-mysql, postfix-dovecot etc.) from ever being installed accidentally? Is there anything else I need to worry about? How do you folks generally manage having compiled, customized versions of software that exists in the repos on your systems?

Ubuntu :: Compiled Freetype From Source Most Of Fonts Look Awful Auto Hinter Prob?

Nov 24, 2010

I'm a compiling noob, but one who can follow well-written directions. I was led to believe that I needed to compile an updated version of freetype to satisfy some build dependencies in Wine, which I also needed to compile to be able to use a custom patch. So now my fonts look awful. I read the directions that came with the freetype source code, and one thing I didn't configure properly was the auto-hinter, which I believe to be the problem (although that's just an educated guess), since the documentation lacked the necessary docs.

how do I go back to stonking great fonts? I'd rather keep the new version of freetype, if someone could tell me how to properly configure it to display fonts correctly.

OpenSUSE :: How To Install API From Source Code?

Feb 6, 2010

In what directory do I need to install a tarball containing API libraries in order to import the libraries for programming?I've been trying for a few hours now to get started on my homework - but I need the GLUT api for OpenGL. After attempting to compile a simple test program, I got the error
Code:
glut.h: No such file or directory

First off, I'm not even really sure if OpenGL wasn't included in the original install or if I even need it when programming with GLUT (I truelly am clueless, lol). But after reading as much as I could, I've only been able to deduce that I need to install the API libraries somewhere on my disc.So I found the tarball, and there are special instructions for installing a linux machine. I found instructions saying to install it in the directory /usr/lib/ but is that right for the SUSE distro? Also, if anybody knows anything about GLUT/OpenGL programming + openSUSE11.2.
