View 1 RepliesAny time i try to open skype it closes out fully in 5 seconds (not even in the processes anymore). I don't know why or how OR how to make it stop being so mean to me! i'm running ubuntu 10.4 32bit . I tried to boot it in safe mode and umm.. it froze? or crashed? well it was on the black screen with the blinking dot for like 20 mins before i gave up on it (Hiting enter or esc or anything didn't work). There was a key symbol on my panel before skype acted up(It closed and disabled something.. i've never seen it before). Adobe also crashed, and linux did a small update (nothing with skype).

I code primarily in jQuery/JavaScript, and I'm looking for a text editor for Linux that has auto-indent and auto-outdent (seems to be tough to find that). Any suggestions? I've checked Gedit, Cream, vim, Bluefish.None of them seem to have this feature.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've made custom launchers for programs that can only run in terminal. They open fine within the Terminal window, but it closes right after the program is finished, before I can read the report.
Is there a way to keep the Terminal window open, using launchers? I don't want to manually type the commands after opening a Terminal.
How do I have an auto completion feature for scp? I often need to 'scp ' a file to a remote server, then I type:
PHP Code:
scp someprogram paulga@pinherstforestrain.math.edu
I'd begin to type tab before or after the input of @. But the available choices are mainly:
@localhost6, @localhost.localdomain, @localhost, etc..
Which file records these hosts name? Second, to execute a program in current directory, I have to type ./program, how can I omit the prefix, or I could type it as I type "octave",etc.
I'm very much used to typing "evo" for launching evolution, chrom to get chromium etc, when on alt+f2.
Now, in Unity, I get suggestions as icons when typing, but not the "auto-complete" I had in 10.10.
It's annoying to have to use the mouse to select the application to run each time.
I've wondered for years how it works and how I can change it. For example, opening a document with vim, or opening a man page, and then exiting out of it will sometimes (depending on the distro) clear the screen and leave your prompt at the very top. other times, it leaves the contents of whatever you had open on-screen and your prompt is at the bottom.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a text editor / log manager of some kind that will automatically refresh a file's contents when it changes.
I have a single target log file (e.g. current.log) that is overwritten under certain circumstances and I'd like to be able to leave it displayed and not constantly have to re-open the file to get updates. Much the same as 'tail --follow=name' does in Linux.
I'm using a Windows desktop but it's a remote file so a Linux app would work just as easily.
I installed the Autocomplete plugin http:[url].... for gedit and it works great. But when I ran it as root "sudo gedit ...", Autocomplete is not on the list of plugin and the auto complete function is not working. Is it possible to make the plugin available to all users?
View 5 Replies View RelatedA very annoying bug has been around for some time now. Auto-complete in the address field on Firefox does not work after Ubuntu resumes after screensaver. What I have to do is to minimise the browser and then maximise it again... it then auto-complete as it should. Surely I cannot be the only one noticing this? I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox 3.6.13.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIn older versions of ubuntu I could use tab to autocomplete folder names multiple times in one command in a terminal, for example:
Code:
tar -cvf myapp.tar --exclude='/var/www/f[TAB]older-name/cache/*' --exclude='/var/www/f[TAB]older-name/sessions/*' /var/www/f[TAB]older-name
Now only the first tab works, is there any way to get this behavior back?
Despite enabling the "auto-complete" to complete an e-mail address from my personal Address-book, it doesn't work. After pressing on the "To"-button, no e-mail address is visible in the list of contacts. That is strange since the contacts are visible within the address book itself. However, when I typed the name of a contact within the "Search"-field of the address book, it also shows no result. Strange... Additional info: two days ago I replaced addressbook.db in Debian manually by the addressbook.db from Ubuntu 11.04 (I'm migrating from Ubuntu 11.04 to Debian Squeeze). It seems that there is no connection between the visible contacts in the address book and the rest of the Evolution. How can I solve it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed F15 and although different, I like it a lot. One thing I don't like, however, is the default auto-completion of environment variables in the terminal. In F14 and older, if you type for instance
Code:
ls $HOME and hit TAB, auto-complete will list the contents of $HOME to search deeper, so to say. But in F15, the terminal automatically escapes the $ sign. If you do the same as above, you get
Code:
ls $HOME
instead of
Code:
ls /home/benny/
how to change the auto-complete settings of the terminal so that $'s are not escaped anymore?
I've got an annoying problem that 'man' and some other commands do not auto-complete (via TAB). e.g. typing: man rsyn (TAB, TAB, TAB, etc) will not auto-complete to 'man rsync' however, if i 'sudo -s' & then try the above, 'man' auto-completes everytime. (Directories always auto-complete successfully) My ~/.bashrc contains:
Code:
# enable bash completion in interactive shells
if [ -f /etc/bash_completion ] && ! shopt -oq posix; then
. /etc/bash_completion
[code]....
I've noticed on a couple of occasions that e-mail address auto-complete drop down lists have e-mail addresses in that I have never entered (!!) They all seem to be for people with the surname fenton at either gmail or hotmail. Is it likely that I have been hacked?

Half the time it selects the wrong address and sometimes I miss it and send emails to wrong people.
I recently installed 32bit maverick and wanted to make it login automatically. I tried enabling auto login from Admin > Login but that didnt work and I was still prompted for my password. Then I went to Users & Groups and changed the password option to Do Not ask for password at login now after I reboot, the user list is shown (only 1 user) and it doesnt ask for password after I click on my username.
However, then it gives a few errors (as i vaguely recall):
1. cannot load .ICE directory in my home directory
2. some error 256 about a gconf-sanity-2 file
3. nautilus cannot load my home directory etc
and then it gets stuck without loading anything (blank wallpaper). i ve tried navigating to my home directory using Alt F2, gksudo nautilus and my home dir contents are encrypted by the ecryptfs (there is a readme.txt file and a shortcut). i have tried to decrypt but it doesnt work... i ve also tried to start/stop gdm, and startx but nothing works. if i stop gdm, then the prompt doesnt recognize my password and keeps on rejecting the commands i enter... I think this has something to do with the home dir not being decrypted due to the dont ask for paswd option... how can i disable the dont ask for pwd without the gui (i can access my / by booting through an external usb).
I have noticed that a common issue to several distros is the fact that the networking subsystem doesn't automatically detect the link if an ethernet connection is disconnected and then re-connected to the NIC after boot. If the ethernet cable is connected after the system is up and running, nothing happens - ethtool eth0 shows link detected: no, and you have to restart the network service to let the NIC know that there is in fact a link, and actually connect. I have a Fedora14 (KDE) box with a brand new Asus motherboard with embedded NIC. Everything works great except the auto-detect of a freshly connected ethernet connection if the link is down to begin with.
Am I missing a ethernet link sentinel utility or something, or is this just the way linux works? I have done plenty of research on plenty of posts, and it seems this is a common problem, with no solution other than manually or programatically restarting the network service in a script to detect the link after a disconnect.
I am new in Linux ,i don't know how to make a boot able Linux with a auto run able Java apps...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI press On-button, Debian boots, logs in and automatically connects to the Wireless network AND! to my local pc via LAN. It runs an ssh server, so I can ssh into debian over internet and communicate with the local pc (send a magic packet). Here are my problems:
1) I don't how to log in automatically. This and this doesn't work.
2) I need a network tool that can manage multiple connections and has a reconnect feature. With the default network manager I cannot even connect to more than one network simultaneously although I have two network devices of course.
And I guess I can run all that in console mode, right?
I would like to exec a script whenever a user mount a device. The device could be an internal device (for example a partition on a second hard disk) or a removable one (for example a usb hard disk). The script must have sudo capabilities even if the user is not included in the admin group. Is it possible?
The specific question:
I would like to add acl option to a device whenever it is mounted.
I tried fstab but it's changing the behaviour of nautilus see:
[URL]... so I would like to create a script with the command
Code:
sudo mount -o remount,acl /media/data
and auto execute it any time data is mounted.
I recently installed a server with Software RAID. I tested by powering it down, unplugging one drive and powering it up. Magically, it worked!I found out later that I have to manually add individual devices like md1 to sda2 md2 to sda4. I got all of them added and rebuilt but my question is: Is there a way to make it so that if I "removed" a drive and put it back, the system will senses the new drive and rebuilds based on some internal table?
View 1 Replies View RelatedHow to make my GNOME desktop auto recognize the NTFS partition of the USB drive.
On command line I can do the following perfectly:
Code:
which results
Code:
All files permission on the drive is 777. I can read, I can write, do whatever I want.
But in GNOME Desktop environment, when the USB drive is plugged-in, the partition is auto-mounted with other options:
Code:
All files permission on the drive is now 555. I can't write to it anymore. I saw a post earlier having similar mount result, but this one is USB drive though.
So how to configure GDE mount automatically with my intended mount options?
I was tried to compile the brl-cad for my IA32 machine. I install all the GNU auto series (autoconf, automake, libtool). Then I run sh autogen.sh asnstructed by the installation guide. But after the preparation finish, I check my directory. The make script does not exist. And everything broke down here. When I tried to run "make", I got this feed back: make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.(of course, there is no make file)I had run every step by using root account. Hence, there should not be any restriction on operation.

Someone on the web taught me to use the following command line:
nvidia-settings -a [gpu:0]/GPUPowerMizerMode=1
running it in the terminal it will set to the mode I want.
Would I be able to make my computer run the above command in terminal everytime it starts? I tried to put the command in the start up applications and it seems not working.
I've installed Lubuntu on a Packard Bell EasyNote W3344 D. lsusb displays the usb pen, however it's not automounted. All three options under pcmanfm --> Preferences -- Volume Managment is ticked. I've tried two different usb pens, both formatted fat32 and confirmed working on ordinary Ubuntu. I should add that I previously installed Mint Fluxbox, but eventually reinstalled (choosing Lubuntu) because I wasn't able to enable auto mount of usb pen. Both /mnt and /media remains empty after insertion of the usb pen. Auto mount of optical drive is working properly.

I'm just learning to use Eclipse (have previously been a vim+make developer). I created the standard Hello World project following the tutorial. The program compiles fine, but if I build it again without cleaning the project, make aborts with a glibc double free message (pasted below). The same thing happens if I run make in the Debug directory outside eclipse. I don't know make well enough to figure out what the problem is, and to my mind Eclipse shouldn't be generating a buggy makefile anyway.
I've attached a tarfile of the project directory. Download the file and the following sequence of commands should show you the problem:
tar xvzf HelloWorld.tar.gz && cd HelloWorld/Debug && make && make
Also, if you think it would be worthwhile submitting a bugreport to the Fedora Eclipse dev team, let me know where I can do that and I'll be happy to.
