Ubuntu :: Dual Boot With Xp Prob: Ntldr Is Missing?

Aug 8, 2010

I got this message today after cleaning out the inside of my computer. Didn't really mess with anything. Booted into Windows XP just fine, had to restart for an update. Burg loaded, I selected Windows and I get:

"NTLDR is missing. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart." WTF? Windows breaks itself. Great. My ubuntu install works just fine. I have 2 separate hard drives, with one OS on each. I can't access the other drive from ubuntu. It says

Unable to mount location Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: Index entry out of bounds in directory inode 5. Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot With Xp - Ntldr As Primary - Blinking Cursor

Dec 27, 2010

Six months ago I installed Ubuntu 10.04 to my otherwise Win XP work laptop. I decided to continue to use Windows' boot loader as primary: I told the Ubuntu installer to put grub2 onto a separate partition, then used dd to copy the first 512 bytes into a file in my Windows C partition, then edited boot.ini to link to it - its a common technique that is described in many support forums and blogs. This worked fine, and continued to work until a few weeks ago. One day I chose the Ubuntu option at the Windows boot loader and got a blinking cursor at top left of screen and no grub2 menu. I was able to use SuperGrub2Disk to discover and boot from my grub2 install - so that didn't appear to be broken. I finally fixed it by dd'ing a fresh copy of the first 512 bytes of my /boot partition over to the Windows C partition. So somehow the Windows boot loader decided it no longer liked my original dd'ed file.

The only things I can think of that might have changed and caused this to happen are (on Ubuntu) an update to security packages using the graphical update manager that pops up (I rarely do a command line apt-get upgrade/dist-upgrade and certainly not in this time frame) and (on Windows) a Windows Update - as it is a work laptop I tend to take whatever essential updates it suggests. As you can see I managed to fix the problem. However does anybody have any similar experience or any explanation why this may have happened? Could an over-zealous Windows Update have caused it?

Ubuntu :: NTLDR Is Missing - Critical Temperature ?

Jul 11, 2011

I recently installed Ubuntu and wanted to remove the Windows XP installation is was dual booted with (I used Wubi to install Ubuntu), but I ended up just editing boot.ini to remove it from the boot menu and automatically boot in to Ubuntu. But then, Ubuntu started playing up and keeps on popping up with the Critical Temperature warning, saying it's 80-100C although it's the first time it's been turned on in 14 hours... But to add to my confusion, when I try to boot from ANY disk, it comes up with "NTLDR is missing" and a restart message.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Install From LiveCD - NTLDR Missing?

Jul 29, 2011

I am trying to install ubuntu 11.04 from a live cd on a recently formatted 80gb hard drive. Ubuntu seemed to hang and become unresponsive after waits exceeding 40 minutes. As I had some difficulty creating the media, burning the iso to disc, I attempted to install a couple other distros, mint and xubuntu, to see if they worked. These displayed the NTLDR missing message and prompted me to restart.

PC: pentium 4 2.93 ghz processor
80 gb hd
512mb RAM
lite on dvd/cd burner

There is a working 150gb hd with xp on it set as the #2 hd in bios. I would like to install a linux-based os on the smaller drive, preferably ubuntu, but am growing a little impatient. Is there a bootloader or anything I will need to install, and what should be the final configuration of the two hard drives once I get another os installed on the hd dedicated to it?

I installed the ubuntu 9.10 with unetbootin on the external HD. When I boot from the HD I get the error: NTLDR is Missing. Is it possible to install of load the ubuntu 9.10 version on a external HD. I found some stuff about

- using another USB stick with the live version and install from that USB to the external HD.

- using the live cd to install. But I don't have a CD drive on the machine.

Ubuntu :: Missing Grub And Dual Boot Menu - Windows Won't Boot

Jul 3, 2011

i am having a problem with my dual boot setup. I originally installed windows XP on a 100gb hard drive, from there i downloaded and burnt ubuntu off so i could install it on my 200gb hard drive. For a little bit i struggled to even get it to install because it wouldn't recognize my onboard nvidia graphics, i ended up having to get an alt boot disk and fix it with technique in this link:

[URL]

Now after the bios boot, my screen shuts off for awhile and takes me directly to the login screen for ubuntu. No Grub, no windows boot options, nothing. I tried booting windows by choosing it from the bios boot menu but all it does is hang at prompt and doesn't boot at all. I tried the live cd fix and reinstalled grub but nothing changed. What i think is happening is that it boots the Grub menu but it doesn't display it because of graphical confrontations. It hangs for about 10 seconds, the grub default time, and then turns my monitor back on to display the Ubuntu login screen.

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot With XP BOOTMGR Missing?

Feb 18, 2011

I have an Asus EEE (it has no cd drive) and I've been using Ubuntu as my primary system. I was thinking about installing Windows XP though flash drive, so that I can dump Wine. I formatted the flash to ntfs, flagged it as boot and extracted the cd's iso there. Reboot, changed priorities in BIOS and it keeps saying "Missing BOOTMGR, press ctrl+alt+del". Now, from my search it`s a fairly common problem, though all of the solutions just say to reinstall from a cd or recover from windows, what is of course not possible. Do you think it's related to only this version (XP) ? Or is it global, so the same thing would happen were I to use Win 7? From what I've read this problem is solely related to Vista/7, not to XP.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 And Win7 Dual Boot - NTFS Signature Missing

Jul 18, 2010

I have a dual boot of Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. I have 2 hard drives on the system, a 500GB and a 1TB drive.

Code:
root@akashi-desktop:~# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x3e67485a .....

Since the drive (sdb2) was already mounted I was able to see "file" show up on the NTFS drive (sdb2) with the last command above. After I rebooted onto Windows 7, I found my F: drive (sdb2) showing up as a RAW filesystem. Windows 7 asks to reformat and I press NO as I have a lot of files on that drive. I rebooted onto Ubuntu again, during boot it says cannot mount to /dev/sdb2 and to press "S" to skip. I pressed "S" and saw sdb2 not mounted. I tried this command:

Code:
root@akashi-desktop:~# mount -t ntfs /dev/sdb2 /media/sdb2
NTFS signature is missing.
Failed to mount '/dev/sdb2': Invalid argument
The device '/dev/sdb2' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?

How to fix this drive without formatting it! fdisk shows the filesytem as NTFS so it must still be fixable I hope.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 / Vista Dual Boot - Missing Or Corrupt Info On Restart

Jun 19, 2010

/windows/system32/winload.exe
status Oxc000000F
missing or corrupt

I then tried to reboot into Ubuntu but it keeps trying to load windows. It looks like I have somehow lost my grub, so now I have lost Ubuntu and Vista. I tried my Vista Start Up disk and at the command prompt I entered:
Bootrec.ext /fixboot
Bootrec.exe /fixmbr
on restart it went back to the 'missing or corrupt' information. Is there some way I get get back to normal?

General :: Dual Boot Missing Hal.dll File - Winxp Works But Not Ubuntu

I do a reformat every few months to get the junk off it.I do a reformat to clean the drive and load XP PRO then load ubuntu 7. or 8. It gives me the option to use either at start up.

I did it a few weeks ago and it has been running fine until I did updates of both XP and ubuntu. When I it fired it up Win XP worked fine but when I choose ubuntu I would get the corrupted or missing hal.dll error and it wouldnt go any further. Several reboots with the same result XP works but not ubuntu.I did a reinstall of the hal.dll file using XP disk for repair according to britec on ..... (but I didn' t do the second step yet). Now I still get the corrupted or missing hal.dll error when I try to get into ubuntu and if I choose XP it freezes. I try going into safe mode and it loads but (wireless) mouse/keyboard won't work.

Fedora Installation :: Dual Boot 12 And Windows 7 - BOOTMGR Is Missing

Dec 27, 2009

I just installed fedora 12 on my laptop. fedora is booting and working fine, but the problem is that now windows isn't booting. when I try to boot windows i get the next message:

"BOOTMGR is missing"

I looked at /boot/grub/menu.lst, and those are the lines for booting windows:

"...
title win7
rootnoverify (hd0,1)
chainloader +1
"

then i checked with fdisk -l and verified that windows is actually installed on the second partition (sda2).the next thing i tried was to use the repair option at the windows 7 installation DVD. the problem is that when i try to preform a startup repair, the installation DVD doesn't recognize my existing windows 7 installation, and therefore wasn't able to repair it. if it's relevant, here are some more details on my machine:

HP probook 4310
windows 7 64-bit
fedora 12 32-bit

i have one sata HD which I devided into 6 partitions {a system partition of the laptop, windows 7 (NTFS), swap, /boot (ext3), / (ext4), /home (ext4)}

Fedora Installation :: Dual Boot / Windows Vista Wouldn't Boot Because "BootMGR Was Missing"?

Sep 4, 2010

I had installed Fedora 13 on an unused partition of my ATA hard-drive yesterday. The primary OS here was Windows Vista.

Anyway, everything was working fne for coupla hours after which I had to restart F13 for some reason. This is when all the trouble began ..

Fedora wouldn't boot cause of some "power issues" - there were none. Windows Vista wouldn't boot because "BootMGR was missing"

I figured if I removed Fedora using the live CD - format the partition, it would help. It didn't. Well, atleast the partition got formatted. I tried re-installing F13 from the live CD but it doesn't finish the process - saying a command, something to do with 'shutdown' is not valid.

I tried repairing Vista from the Installation DVD but it is unable to do so.

Right now, on rebooting the computing, I enter the 'grub' console. I tried using grub commands to boot "Windows" from the (hd0,0) partition like thus,

Code:
grub> rootnoverify (hd0,0)
grub> makeactive
grub> chainloader +1
grub> boot
But it still maintains that "BootMGR is missing" .

Fedora Installation :: Dual - Boot Into Windows 7 From GRUB - Black Screen Says "BOOTMGR" Is Missing

Apr 27, 2010

I've had Windows 7 installed for a few months now and would like to install Fedora 12 on a separate partition. I've tried this three times now, all of them ending with something wrong. The problem that exists for me now is that when I install Fedora 12 and boot up for the first time in GRUB, Fedora 12 works fine. ut when I boot into Windows 7 from GRUB, it just comes up with a black screen and says "BOOTMGR is missing; press ctrl + alt + del to restart" at the top. I don't believe that GRUB is booting into the wrong partition because I have no Windows recovery partition, just Windows 7. Also when I try and fix the Windows 7 partition with the system recovery disk, it says that the volume is corrupt every time. At this point I have everything backed up on a separate drive so I'm open to try installing Fedora 12 again even if it risks screwing up my Windows 7 partition, I would really just like to have a functioning dual boot.
